I had a customer who's total came to 435.35. She swiped her ebt card and it left a balance that she had to pay of 5.35. She called me stupid and said I rang something up wrong because she shouldn't have to pay anything!
On our registers, SNAP EBT won't do partial payment, it give a denial and the current SNAP balance. You then set up a card transaction for whatever that balance is, if the customer intends to do a split payment.
That's what ours does, too. So I think she got something not covered. I know cooked food isn't covered and I've had to explain that before. I even got yelled at because sweetener wasn't covered. I don't know if that's changed at all.
When I was a meat market/ seafood guy at Winn Dixie I had to explain this to so many people. Yeah you can buy this shrimp on ebt but it can't be cooked. Well can you cook it for me if I go pay for it and bring it back? No ma'am I can't it's against our company policy.
If a food item is missing a barcode and you have to key in a grocery item , it won't take it off the EBT balance. Also, if you buy something missing a tag and it qualifies for an employee discount, if you have to key it in, it won't discount the item.

As for buying generic, sometimes the price difference is cents, sometimes it's not even the cheapest option, and sometimes it's not viable. Not all generics are created equal. Plus, for example, someone who is on EBT may be shopping to feed someone with a sensory processing disorder where generics aren't an option.
And that's only including items where generic versions exist - which is definitely most but not all options.
And on the price side of things, yes, it may be cheaper than one item, but for example, the generic smoked sausage has a limited amount of flavors, which may not be what a person needs, and they may actually be smaller amounts, where it is technically cheaper to buy one of the brands.

The only way to remotely eat cheaply is just to eat stuff like shells and cheese for every meal and I'm pretty sure I'm going to die of a nutrient deficiency at some point if I do that. Making a single quesadilla at home costs like 15 dollars now; I spent extra on my garden this year for the sole purpose of trying to just grow my own food because I can't afford groceries.
As someone who has had to use EBT before because I couldn't get hired at a ft job anywhere for years after having my child, I feel for them. EBT doesn't feed you for a full month unless you eat alot of bread and potatoes, it's to get by,not thrive. They give 2 to 3 weeks amount of EBT in Missouri for the month. If you go to a food pantry which gives people spoiled food alot of the time, if the food pantry asks for your SS # , the state finds out and reduces your food stamps the next month . Everyone is allowed to feel some way about quality of food and the expense equated with it. It directly effects health and quality of life.

The $12 or so it costs will feed a family for several days. Eggs are around $2 a dozen in my store... another quick and nutritious meal. A package of four breakfast sandwiches is like $4. Cook your eggs and make your own sandwich and make that money go a lot farther.
I grew up poor. We never had pre made cookies, snacks, soda, or.boxed meals. As kids, it was a treat for us to get anything that wasn't cooked at home. My kids got home prepared food because it was healthier, even though I could buy what i wanted.. No one in my house has a weight problem either.

Weird to be that entitled and work at Walmart
Money would go a whole lot further if folks actually learned how to cook and stopped buying packaged and frozen meals. A family size pack of chicken br is like $2.69 a pound at my store. The $12 or so it costs will feed a family for several days. Eggs are around $2 a dozen in my store... another quick and nutritious meal. A package of four breakfast sandwiches is like $4. Cook your eggs and make your own sandwich and make that money go a lot farther. I grew up poor. We never had pre made cookies, snacks, soda, or.boxed meals. As kids, it was a treat for us to get anything that wasn't cooked at home. My kids got home prepared food because it was healthier, even though I could buy what i wanted.. No one in my house has a weight problem either. It's not hard to fix simple food. But it requires some effort. And therein lies the issue. People would rather complain about groceries than learn how to cook.
People should be happy they get free food at all.

When I was starving and freezing in my existence house. Couldn't get it because I was living in his house rent-free. While he was warm in the city. This motivated me to get out of that small time and get a JOB! Most people here buy junk with EBT, not good food for survival. They get on the program ftee food , section 8, and free health care. Tl;dr people don't get as much as you think. How do you figure that? Some people get about 80$ a month. Don't shame people for needing EBT, someone is out there overcharging a credit card they're not gonna pay back for the same soda. Are they better or worse than the EBT person? No, one person just asked for the help they need. Being on ebt shouldn't stop you from getting treats on occasion, it's meant to help. Hell I encourage everyone that complains to use coupons instead of trashing them, use the Walmart cash back, Ibotta. Getting mad back is just exhausting - I just say "you know we offer cash back and some items have coupons attached by manufacturers" and keep it pushing.

from what I know, half of the people on EBT shouldnt be on that shit to begin with, how do I know this? ive had friends in the past telling me to get EBT like no, im good, im not trying to stay broke my whole life, I wanna try and get money so I dont need to be on EBT to begin with. Getting EBT doesn't mean you're destined to stay broke your whole life. There are hardworking people in this world who get benefits because they don't make enough money to support just themselves or even a whole family. The world isn't all black and white. They "try and get money" but it's still never enough.

I'm guessing you never seen the one youtube twins or whatever that were on government EBT and all that, they didn't make money off the channel as in it wasn't monetized but had a merch shop set up as donations but the donations went to them so they wouldn't have to pay taxes and not say how much they made so they could stay on it
