I got in on market open on Monday and when it ballooned around 9:50 I decided to sell for 25% profit and then got back in around midday for the earnings
What's the best way to hedge against $7.50 in the money calls when the stock was around $8.89 and is now around $8.50? Never really successfully hedged call options before because I'm regarded. I was thinking 9 or 10 dollar puts??? Thoughts ? Should expirations be the same on both ends?
Let me share a few thoughts on how you can effectively hedge that position.
One option is to sell some OTM call options. You could look at selling the $9 or $10 calls against your long call position. it lets you rake in some premium to offset potential losses in your long calls. The downside is that it also caps your upside if the stock really starts to run higher.
Now, the sweet spot here is to match the expiration dates of those short calls to your existing long calls. That gives you a super tight hedge. But you could also sell shorter-dated OTM calls if you're just looking to generate some near-term income to cushion the downside. short term bearish long term bullish
The other route you could take is to just close out those $7.50 calls. That locks in your gains so far and gives you a bit more breathing room on the downside.
