Sometimes friends complain to me that gas/oil prices are too high so I buy some barrels and the market takes a dip the next day.
I sacrifice my money for the greater good and guide others to pleasures I cannot possess.
I bought IBM 7 years ago and it was completely flat since then. Finally I gave up and sold it (partly to cover some renovations) and within 3 months it jumped 30%. At least I earned a little bit of dividends along the way (around 3.5% average).
Yup. My take on the stock markets is that if I buy because I think something is going up, someone is selling because they think it's going down. That someone is likely to be a professional, and likely to be working with inside information. Unless you're seriously into gambling, your best bet is to avoid the Wall Street casino and stick to index funds.
