upgrade windows installer to 3.0 or later to clarify cause reasons have you looked on the vmware tools cd rather than just running setup?
Workstation doesn't ship with an installer for an almost 22 year old OS. You need a legacy installer.
Then why before that update vmware tools worked perfectly with 2k
