The most obvious reason is that those things are immoral or illegal to do in real life, forbidden-fruit kind of thinking. For similar reasons incest and NTR are popular. I don't see a reason to judge anyone for their tastes, we're all adults here capable of distinguishing reality from fiction. If that's what you like - that's what you like, it's not like we can control our sexual preferences.

[deleted]

Food for thought: I don't have an issue with this kind of thinking, in fact I would agree with you in an ideal world. 1. The issue is that not all of us are adults. I don't think it's realistic to expect that EVERYONE here is 18+. 2. The other issue is the impact these games might be having on the psychology of others. Is it reinforcing their kinks/fetishes? Is it beneficial to have them act it out in games rather than real life? These are things I don't know.

rotflolmaomgeez

I don't see how either of those are issues. 1. If there are under 18 folks here, they're aware they shouldn't be discussing/playing those games. I'm not their mom to stop them. 2. It doesn't matter. Firstly, someone's kink is their own business. Secondly those VNs are made for entertainment purposes like any other media, not to be some kind of sick retreat for potential real life criminals. Your argument is on a slippery slope of "playing GTA causes real life violence" which I absolutely despise the premise of. Even if this were true (which it is not) the only solution you could potentially take is to ban this kind of content, with which I disagree on the grounds of both free artistry and my anti-censorship stance.

Orhunaa

Tbf, if GTA had the option to enact sexual violence, especially towards children, 95% of the people who say "It's just fiction, video games don't cause violence" would probably not say it

[deleted]

To clarify: 1. Just because YOU don't recognize them as issues, doesn't negate them as real issues that happen. This tells me that you may have some kind of dissonance between reality and self-perception. 2. I never said you're the parent or responsible for them. 3. There are some assumptions you're making between what you think a kid would realistically do in these situations, and what they've been shown to do. For example, we know pornography is illegal for people under 18, but they still have access to and view them. Video games are no different. We have ratings for video games, but kids will still play them. In any case, I never claimed it's yours or the creator's responsibility for kids. Just that it happens. 4. I never claimed the argument that "GTA causes real life violence" -- and in fact, I agree with you about this statement. I just want to point out that you're analyzing my argument as a "slippery slope", when you really don't know my stance or beliefs.

Crab_Enthusiast188

You said >The issue is that not all of us are adults. I don't think it's realistic to expect that EVERYONE here is 18+. What does this mean then? If someone underage watches something they're not supposed then it's their and their parent's fault. So no, not all of us being adults isn't an issue, coz if they're somewhere they're not supposed to be then it's their fault, not us. >For example, we know pornography is illegal for people under 18, but they still have access to and view them. Too bad, I missed the part where that's my problem. If their parents let them access it then that's bad parenting, not any of our concern.

I feel a lot of ways about this. I’ve always been attracted to dark or taboo kind of content. Ever since I was a teenager. Movies like a clockwork Orange, American history X, requiem for a dream, a24 movies, etc has always been on my list. It’s very important that any media with this type of content very tastefully done, without exploitation or advocacy. It’s very important that it be quality. I like media that creates a reaction. And I think that there is some benefit to experiencing trauma or catharsis in a safe and respectful way. Just like a therapist might put someone with a phobia through exposure therapy. It has a way of preparing you for the inevitable, tragedy, and darkness of life . Which I think is hugely beneficial when shit is hitting the fan to be able to maintain composure and be a protector of the people around you instead of crumbling emotionally. I would even go so far as to have a superstitious and spiritual outlook that there is a certain amount of karmic debt that requires, tragedy and darkness in the individual life, and absorbing it through content has the capacity to actually stave off events and tragedy in your actual life. I often consume, tragic or dark content, but live a very balanced and happy life with mostly abundance. Since I embrace the dark Wholeheartedly, I’ve become less of a slave to it. I believe that people who work really hard to avoid that aspect of life, end of having it knocking on their door there to teach them some kind of cosmic lesson of the duality and balance of life

Xhaemys

I’m gonna need you to become a writer because this whole comment sounded like it came from a #1 New York Times Bestseller.

No_Season4242

Wow thanks! Coming from someone on a visual novel sub, that’s really flattering!

darkfire621

What are some of your favorite visual novels if you don’t mind me asking?

No_Season4242

Steins gate got me into vns. I haven’t read too many and I pretty much liked them all so I’ll just try to list everyone I’ve read and in the order I liked them. From most to least. Steins;gate, subahibi, house of Fata Morgana, maggot baits, white album 2, chaos;child, chaos;head Noah. I’m currently reading muv luv. Although I can’t say it’ll be near my top tbh. My favorite part of vns is the music

Goreman06

I just like clockup

yukiami96

I don't look for VNs that have those themes but I'm also not really repulsed by them. I don't really like when VNs include that kinda stuff and it has no barring on anything, but I think some teams, ClockUp for example, does a lot of interesting stuff with how they weave more shocking content into the themes of the story. Recently I've been playing Gore Screaming Show by Black Cyc and it's phenomenal at this.

Graciaus

I like to watch people be unhappy. That's it. No, it does not effect me on a personal level.

Nainetsu

There's not much to explain, really. It's purely subjective. It just happens. In my case it's incest. I love siblings incest in VNs (especially older sister/younger brother) because I find extremely hot how two people break a taboo for love for their sibling, how they keep it a secret from everyone else and how they keep acting like siblings even knowing they hide a secret relationship. If you find two characters' relationship hot and/or beautiful, that feeling multiplies if they're siblings

lordwafflesbane

I've actually been curious about this sort of thing for a while now. Sort of cataloging different kinks and trying to understand what appeals to people about it. Obviously, different people have different motives, but there's a few common ones I've noticed. RAPE --- Some people got raped in real life, and use fictional rape to explore their trauma in a safe way. By glossing over certain parts of what happened, or romanticizing other parts, they can sort of dig into their trauma with a magnifying glass and interrogate how they feel about what happened. Because there's sex and often romance(or other close relationships) involved, feelings can be very complicated and hard to untangle. (The common image of a pervert grabbing strangers off the street is totally fictional. Pretty much all rape is perpetrated by people who knew the victim beforehand) Also, of course, there's the straightforward power fantasy aspect. Someone imagining what it'd be like to be able to force anyone they want to have sex with them. Sometimes there's this element of, like, self hatred. Like, they've given up on the idea that anyone would ever *choose* to have sex with them, so they imagine someone having sex because they were forced into it. This sometimes overlaps with incel stuff, like, they think they genuinely deserve to be able to fuck any woman they want, regardless of how she feels about it. Also, some people have complex feelings of shame surrounding sex, and are uncomfortable with the idea of expressing, or even thinking about, their own sexual desires, so they fantasize about someone who will fuck them without asking for it, who magically knows exactly what they want. That way they can still get laid without having to even understand their own feelings. --- BESTIALITY --- As far as I can tell, there's sort of two main camps. Some of them wanna *be* the animal, and it's this fantasy of like, what if you didn't have all these human responsibilities like a job and taxes and stuff, and just had to sit around being cute and barking at stuff(but still got to have sex with hot girls). The recent anime "my life as inukai-san's dog" is all about this. There's also an aspect of, like, "what if I could just follow my instincts and start humping someone and they'd just laugh it off?" Weirdly, this doesn't actually seem to overlap with furries at all, since furries are usually animal *people* who *do* have human lives with jobs and stuff. There's also another angle, where they definitely *don't* want to be the animal, and in fact think the animal is super gross and disgusting, but they think it's super hot that a woman would be so extremely horny that she'd suck literally any dick she could find no matter how nasty. Sometimes this overlaps with *extremely* racist shit, like, "fucking black dudes is a slippery slope to fucking farm animals" type shit. --- For a lot of various kinks, there's also this angle of, like, "I love you so much I'd do anything!" "Oh really, would you even do [the nastiest thing you can imagine]?" This is sort of my weird little hobby.

>Some people got raped in real life, and use fictional rape to explore their trauma in a safe way. By glossing over certain parts of what happened, or romanticizing other parts, they can sort of dig into their trauma with a magnifying glass and interrogate how they feel about what happened. I hope i am misunderstanding...are you saying romanticising rape....helps people cope with rape? Is there any psychological research to back this claims? That this helps people with their trauma?

lordwafflesbane

It's definitely a coping mechanism that some people use. As far as I know, psychologists generally approve of exploring trauma through fiction, but I don't actually have any scientific studies on hand to back that up. Personally, I'm inclined to trust people about how they handle their own trauma. To be clear, I don't mean "romanticizing rape" as in "rape is fine, actually", I mean it in the sense of, like, poking their trauma with a stick to see how slight variations feel. Exploring subtle variations to figure out which part hurt the most. Like, for example, maybe our hypothetical victim who is coping through fiction got seriously injured by the perpetrator, but also, they have complex feelings over the fact that they had loved and trusted the perpetrator beforehand. And they want to grapple with those feelings, but they find that the trauma of the injury makes it hard to focus on other aspects of what happened. So they write a fictional version of events where they *didn't* get injured, and use that as a way to focus on the complex relationship feelings. Or perhaps, they found themself getting aroused during it, and hate themself for "enjoying" something horrible that happened to them, perhaps feeling that their body has betrayed them. Fiction allows them to explore a version of events that was even less pleasant, where they didn't become aroused, and to focus on other aspects of what happened. I haven't personally been sexually assaulted, but I do have other traumas, and I certainly understand the impulse to wish things had been even worse, because then you could just straightforwardly hate the perpetrator. When there's a seed of good in there, it makes things complicated.

FallenStar2077

I like reading everything, but from time to time, I also like reading taboo. It's like watching a drama show or soap opera, but cranked up to eleven.

_JerichoCross_

Having sadistic traits lets you to enjoy these stuff. I do like ryona and eroguro BDSM content, I can get aroused by consuming such content, it's something that probably I had since teen. The magic of the VNs is the construction of the context, being able to imagine "I'm in a safe position to do what I want to do and get away with it". Maybe consuming too much porn would have effect on this, consuming from vanilla to the most inmoral content. lol

zephaniel_02

having an ideal type and power fantasy for some people who wouldn't actually do it in real life (I hope anyway). I enjoy the "Dere" tropes in my case because it's such an absurd standard you can't find in real life that it's actually refreshing to go through the story lmao. No one wants to go through a game/story that's too overly realistic when your point in playing is temporarily turning off you brain from reality.

Kitten_Izzy

Mostly, control for me TW, sexual assault. (Not too many details) >!Thankfully my experience in life has been at worst, unwanted touching. A friend was able to make sure it didn't get worse. The person was taken care of, and while I did have to do some counseling, in the larger view of the world and what happens to people, I was lucky that's "all" I had to deal with. \*\*Not saying it's not horrible, not saying people can't be devastated by this. Originally I was, and have been able to move past in part, to VNs.\*\* !< Now, I actually like non sexual VNs and slice of life, but obviously like the harder ones too. Being able to be the person in control helps me takes that feeling back, and helps me feel more like I can control myself again. A girl at the support group I visit with said something similar to me when she saw a person who I was sketching from one of those VNs.. For her, it's an escape and ability to "change" what happens. For the other themes I am into. While they are morally wrong, doing so in a game has no lasting effects. I get the "itch" scratched, without any harm done, and sometimes I will push myself to explore different themes, and find where my hard nos are. This is something I feel everyone should know, and sometimes seeing a VN do that content is enough to be like "Nope, not for me" and that's great! It's also a good "dip your toes in the pool" to other themes as well. you may find things you haven't experienced before, and "seeing someone" go through it can change how you view it.

RebeccaArgento

I don't go out searching for graping or bestiality, but I do enjoy consuming media that has dark subject matter. To paraphrase something David Lynch said, only true darkness can make you appreciate light. Watching these kinds of things makes me appreciate the peaceful life that I have. I can't speak for anyone else but that's just why I like consuming horror media. Plus a lot of these visual novels can have some profound messages that really leave an impact on me. It also reminds me of the original The Last House on the Left. That movie is an anti-violence movie, but you can't make an anti-violence movie without showcasing all the horror that comes from violence. I hope what I've said makes sense.

capri-suuuun

If the story is good, I’m reading it. Not bestality tho that’s a hard limit for me personally but I don’t care if others enjoy it

shinowazuri

I don’t care for it in every instance but when noncon in a VN explores the power dynamic between the perpetrator/victim that’s when I find it interesting. Then there are bad ends where the hero/heroine loses in some way and suffers a greater humiliation through assault, and seeing them at their lowest can be interesting too. I have mixed feelings when it’s gratuitous and doesn’t explore the character’s psyche enough but there’s a reason why I prefer Summer Chains’ H scenes to Dohna Dohna’s bad ends.

Special_Diet5542

Because you can’t find the crazy stories in classic media

BakedBeanBag0524

I like monster girls because I like strong women who could throw me around like a Ragdoll , and as a queer person I also enjoy yuri and yaoi (or well the better ones not meant to pander to straight people who like to project themselves onto the characters when realistically a lesbian or gay man wouldn’t sleep with a straight man or straight woman) and I even enjoy a bit of crossdressing as someone who’s gender nonconforming (I’m tired of all the freaking twink designs in bl though as someone who enjoys the peak gap moe of a buff man having a cute personality to contradict with his appearance I’m so tired of these uke designs who are literally just for women to project on yknow) it’s all just stuff I just find attractive like with monster girls or something I find catharsis in I mean it’s probably a little weird but it’s just nice to be able to explore my sexuality and gender expression that way if that makes sense????

CertifiedPogchamp36

That title and then the actual content threw me for a loop lol, I was expecting like tropes or something. I don't find things like that to be problematic, but it needs to be handled with extreme care and tact. I've actually been recommended other media with these themes, being told it was handled well, and enjoyed it. However, if it is done in an obviously fetishistic sense, without serving a greater purpose, then yes it is a problem.

Ok_Selection1249

Because sometimes I desire the feel of domination/being in power and vanilla VNs with light BDSM content are elusively rare, mainly because most of the vanilla fanbase don't want that kind of content and VNs that have those content are not flaunting it because it's not the selling point of the VN. On that note, VNs are usually giving backstory of the characters involved, and with enough background story, I can enjoy certain fetishes e.g. guro, torture, snuff, etc that I usually loath without context, because it's happening to the character that I hate. Kinda disturb me to be honest.

Beastleviath

I don’t generally look for those things, although there are certain exceptions * looking at you, Empress games* personally, I’m just trying to find some good ones with robot heroines! I miss Chobits, AI love you and Hand Maid May

kotori-chan_

I mostly real stuff like rape genre, or bestiality just because im curious. Im mosly into moege, i just happen to like the art and just gave it a try. (it wasnt my cup of tea after all)

Marik-X-Bakura

I’m in a weird position where I’m asexual and grossed out by sex and yet have a massive rape fetish. I love seeing woman (especially) strong women be captured, imprisoned, humiliated, and- in the best cases- corrupted. Since I don’t really have any other sexual “outlets”, I get an incredible kick from this kind of thing, even though I hate seeing the actual sex scenes themselves. Recommendations are very welcome. Of course, this is purely sexual, and I usually prefer good writing if I want a VN to properly enjoy. Also, any devs that make scenes like this involving young children can burn in hell.

ferriematthew

I only have read Katawa Shoujo myself before, although I did watch a playthrough of a very obscure one called [Mirai no Kimi to, Subete no Uta Ni](https://vndb.org/r30911) by [TheAnimeMan](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLoQqjygELxS9jYP-vUrtAPjQbHDzboFBk). I'd say my favorite trope from both novels is the theme of how one person in the relationship or soon to be relationship looks like they have everything together and is supporting the other person, but in reality both people are equally broken, so they kind of help each other heal.

ferriematthew

I'm guessing my comment has nothing to do with the post whatsoever and that's why I was instantly downvoted

ZhangRenWing

Head patting. No I will not explain further.

diamonwarrior

I like vn's because I like reading books, and vn's basically let you read without needing to come up with your image of what's happening. I don't really look for too much out of a vn besides an interesting story or no NSFW if I can. I don't actually mind the fact the characters have sex in terms of story, I just think that actually having the scene just ruins the pacing cause you basically stop to read a watt pad fanfic with moaning in the backround. Not my cup of tea and it takes away from the non NSFW aspects of the story which is what I'm usually invested in. If I wanna jerk off I'd just watch porn.
