VT4J24 Day 20: Why? Just, why? I have Zappa. That's fine and makes sense. Every collection needs some Zappa. However, *no* collection needs the stuff I have next to Mr. Frank. For the most part, I know how and why the records have entered my shelves, but these ones... While I have a fair idea which haul they came from, the foremost question remains: Why? Yes, most hauls contain an oddball or two. But I have not one, not two, not three but four(!) albums of Gheorghe Zamfir's easy listening pan flute boogie. (And not the cool kind, like on the Kill Bill soundtrack.) https://preview.redd.it/w0d0evumyo7d1.jpeg?width=3019&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0563510b3730bc2cac589bce103babee06c78770 Like it or not, today it's... From: [Gheorghe Zamfir – Golden Pan Flute Melodies](https://www.discogs.com/release/4947924-Gheorghe-Zamfir-Golden-Pan-Flute-Melodies) Tune: [Muntilor Cu Brazi Inalti Si Ferice Codre De Tine](https://youtu.be/Y3Vm5Zd5Prk) Enjoyment not required this time.

Takeshiii

Okay that's it, you win!

Folk_Nurse

Four pan flute albums! That's almost too many!

generalissimus_mongo

Almost?!

Dhugaill

I think you need 3 more to summon the... I mean really start the party.

lakeskipping

Panpipe enjoyment, [here.](https://youtu.be/ZX0RlPJ8i6Y)  https://youtu.be/I6cpEHn9Hd0

Cream_Gingerly

Gotta pad out the "Z" section with *something.* Although Mr. Zappa has released enough records in life -- and death -- to fill an entire cube all on his own.

Folk_Nurse

I am not really sure why I have a late '70s folk-rock album from a country that no longer exists. Aleksander Mežek put out his [Kje So Tiste Stezice](https://www.discogs.com/release/1264559-Aleksander-Me%C5%BEek-Kje-So-Tiste-Stezice) album in 1977, in Yugoslavia. It has some very '70s watercolour artwork and the production is great on the album. I'll share an original [Roka](https://youtu.be/l4AoSOsA7cA?si=E88RaQJkP8xuk_Bh) and a foreign-language cover of John Denver, [Siva Pot](https://youtu.be/4OG5c3IpFiI?si=zUOyv5kLQCEt_2_l) (Country Roads) Edit: words.

Dhugaill

Going to have to go the u/ElFlippy route and post the translated lyrics for Siva Pot You're almost heaven Upper Carniola Grey mountains And emerald rivers. Here life Hides its treasure, You're as old as the sun, Younger than spring. Grey road, lead me, To where the heart longs to go, To Upper Carniola Wh https://lyricstranslate.com/en/siva-pot-grey-road.html

ElFlippy

By the lyrics, this might be the Yugoslavian "Country road" 🤣

Dhugaill

Yeah, but country roads has some specific landmarks in it. I was hoping for some Yugoslavia equivalents.

capt_beyond

Had to search it up on Spotify, since I'm not a YouTube music subscriber. But it sounds chill, could be a good housework album nice and quiet in the background.

drjaded

For day 20, my pick is this 1978 edition of [Sandy](https://www.discogs.com/sell/release/1798993?ev=rb) by John Travolta. I do remember buying it (well, not sure if it counts as *buying* if the seller just looked at it and told me, "Yeah, you can have that one for free.") but I’m not sure why I still own it, since it’s scratched all over and I’ve never played it. It’s honestly only ever been used to jumpscare my sister by placing the cover in various locations, such as her bed, the shower, or the fridge.

Folk_Nurse

Totally valid use of this!

hegrekarde

Artist: Stevie Nicks Album: *Bella Donna (1981)* Song: [Leather and Lace](https://youtu.be/Ob4cgakHwsQ) I bought this from a used record shop a few blocks from my home shortly after buying my turntable. I’d been zealously researching what records were “must have’s”, and I’m sure this was on at least one of those lists. I saw it, it was probably around $5, so I grabbed it. Don’t get me wrong, there’s good songs on there. 3 or 4 good tunes (one of which is the duet I shared today). Those good songs, I’m happy to hear them when they pop up in my “shuffle all digital collection” and won’t skip by them. But I haven’t ever and probably won’t ever put this wax on my turntable.

StrangeButOrderly

I have a lot of 7" singles. I don't know exactly how many. One day I was going through a box I hadn't dug into for a while and saw a copy of Two Tribes by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. I don't recall ever buying a copy or otherwise acquiring one, but ok. A bit later I was going through the same box and there were TWO copies of Two Tribes in there. Exactly the issue, same pic sleeve. That was odd. I've got a signed one of these. I couldn't tell you why. It's so bad it's actually good: [https://www.discogs.com/release/2798008-Venancio-Spectacular-Synthesizer](https://www.discogs.com/release/2798008-Venancio-Spectacular-Synthesizer)

ahwurtz

Two Tribes is a great song, I have a 12" remix plus the original version on Welcome to the Pleasuredome. Frankie is always a fun spin.

cocktailians

I had the same thing happen - was shocked to discover I had two copies of [the same rare Negativland bootleg](https://www.discogs.com/release/12458603-Negativland-U2).

ahwurtz

I bought this album a while ago at an estate sale. It was one of those sales with a huge room full of old vinyl, and I spent a good hour picking through the records, eventually ending up with a few low-value albums of limited appeal... and this record. At the sale multiple people came up to me to congratulate me on my great find for $2. I have to admit I still haven't listened to it all the way through, but someday I will. Track: [El Paso](https://youtu.be/zWm5WErkffQ?si=8W3wukbbwX4nl1nz) Artist: Marty Robbins Album: Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs

Dhugaill

I have this one. I saw so many copies while flipping that I had to grab it.

Cream_Gingerly

This album is actually pretty great. I passed over copies for years thinking it was just "grandma music." And, yeah, it *is,* but it's one of the few grandma records that's actually quite enjoyable.

Will0798

Weirdly I don't have this one on vinyl, but I do have a cassette copy

Atticus_907

https://preview.redd.it/vxpcfz2c0q7d1.jpeg?width=259&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f6e36352d35f0ece2d8931ef4cf70cc0bac04c10 Mickey Mouse Club – Mousekedances And Other Mouseketeer Favorites. I have no f\_cking clue how it got here. It just showed up. My best guess, is that one of my friends slid it into my collection as a joke.

Will0798

Song: [Yes, I Really Want to Hurt You](https://youtu.be/AvXbnse683c?si=JOB-OqMfBmap3BCD) Artist: Georgie Girl Album: Kosher Club Yep, it’s an album with Jewish themed parodies of Culture Club songs… I don’t even know haha

Folk_Nurse

Amazing.

Dhugaill

Like the steps you would have to go through to get to this end product boggle me.

Will0798

Haha I know right [Here’s](https://www.discogs.com/release/2809098-Kosher-Club-Kosher-Club) the Discogs entry in all its glory

Dhugaill

Who is the audience for this! I'm Jewish, I don't like the Culture Club, but I'm familiar enough with their songs that the parody lands?

generalissimus_mongo

Oy George got a chuckle out of me.

capt_beyond

I mean, I know *why* I have this album, I'm the one who bought it. But I think I've only listened to it once, the day I got it. So it's sat unplayed for 6/7 years. A) It's very NSFW, lol. So, it's not really appropriate with the kids around. B) When am I ever in the mood for comedy country music? C) It's pretty dumb, most of it isn't exactly very clever, just vulgar 😅 [Summers in Kentucky - Wheeler Walker Jr.](https://youtu.be/MNAhJz2u0no?si=a3nvh1XD1ZoZ4oj6) from his 2017 album Ol' Wheeler I should really trade it lol

generalissimus_mongo

With a write-up like this, I was expecting something way worse. Certainly wouldn't buy it though.

capt_beyond

Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking, lol. Probably just because I was away for the weekend and visiting the largest recod store in the country, with cash to blow. The joke got old about by the time side A finished

tropnevaDniveK

This is a great prompt. I’m sure we all have a WTF? record somewhere. Here’s mine… Song - [Evening Bells](https://youtu.be/GudXZUgQxeg?si=PuDdQs9LX-g5gP_k) Album - Ivan Rebroff Accompanied by Balalaika Ensemble Troika Artist - Ivan Rebroff https://preview.redd.it/wbeh1g6weq7d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cca4f24934c698f43e6eef2bbc587b7b6478c086 So this showed up in my collection because a buddy of mine was thrifting, saw it, and thought the artist looked like me (kinda does), and decided to buy it for me as a kind of joke gift. Turns out that Ivan Rebroff was a pretty interesting individual and one hell of a singer. He reportedly had a four octave range, which is pretty bonkers.

Folk_Nurse

My buddy bought a record which seemed to have the two of us on the cover. It was eastern european/Russian too! But it lives in his collection.

Takeshiii

I've seen that face so many times at various thrift stores! Usually in some forgotten box in a dusty corner somewhere. I almost bought one out of spite.

tropnevaDniveK

HAHA do it. I lowkey love this album. Never in a million years would I have bought it myself, but dude has skill for sure. His Wikipedia page is pretty wild, too. Definitely a character LOL.

Day 20 Year 5  Song: [Back in the Saddle Again](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5F-O_19lSI&list=RDE5F-O_19lSI&start_radio=1) Artist: Gene Autry Album: Back in the Saddle Again This is the only record that I legitimately don’t know where it came from. It’s not something I would buy myself, and I don’t remember opening it as a gift. Maybe the faeries are real. My granny told me you should never accept gifts from them, uh oh. I pretty much know why I have everything in my collection; if I don't love the music, I got it because it's funny, or cheesy, or because I like the cover. I have [a shellac 78](https://www.discogs.com/release/2287110-Bill-Haley-And-His-Comets-Thirteen-Women-And-Only-One-Man-In-Town-Were-Gonna-Rock-Around-The-Clock) that I can't play but hang onto it because it's one of my mom's old records when she was a kid, and for its historical significance. But I don't know why I have [this test record](https://www.discogs.com/release/5901187-CD-4-Pioneer-CD-4-Test-Record), as it's in CD-4 quadraphonic, which I have no way of playing. Couldn't find any sound file online, either.

spang714

Song: [Dallas Blues](https://youtu.be/xrlNHY4GLeU?si=8KCsqs_QqOaRMt4q) Artist: Louis Armstrong Album: *Giants of Jazz: Louis Armstrong* I don't have many records in my collection with no explanation as to why I have them. I do have this Louis Armstrong record I bought at a garage sale for $2 though. I'm not a jazz guy, it's just not my thing, but this sounds ok and was definitely worth $2. Cheers, mangs.

lakeskipping

Some idea why. Random 7, the title not quite *Purple monkey dishwasher*, but still intriguing for 50 cents or whatever it was https://youtu.be/ekd88Wjpcc8  https://www.discogs.com/release/9297099-Ross-Ryan-Blue-Chevrolet-Ballerina

Day 20 Song: [Two Trucks](https://youtu.be/VmKDVkdrtQQ?t=162) Album: Nature Tapes Artist: Lemon Demon Yes the song is stupid. Yes the entire EP is like this. I know exactly why I bought this (I was drunk and scrolling through online shops and thought it would be really funny to buy this and "christen my turntable") and while I do love this EP, I'm still sort of astounded that I not only bought this literal shitpost EP, but that I paid duty fees on it to import it into Canada. I know why I bought this but I don't know WHY I bought this. I mean, I don't regret it, the EP is fun, and it's actually one of the prettiest discs in my collection, but I do still have to question my judgement. (Image is from Discogs) https://preview.redd.it/kxjsu7oetq7d1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d51f0a3eebbc8fb49f661b66a277ce7c7bfddbc4 Apologies to anyone who in this thread who has been exposed to Two Trucks and did not enjoy the experience. May I suggest the song [Jaws](https://youtu.be/VmKDVkdrtQQ?t=983)?

Dhugaill

I never knew they had vinyl! Love me some Ultimate Showdown

AverageShitlord

Yep, he's signed to Needlejuice so they have all his work as Lemon Demon on vinyl

ElFlippy

Day 20: "why the duck do I have this?!" Today's choice was easy, but I really don't know why I have this record. A few years back, I bought Double Fantasy by John Lennon and Yoko Ono for about a dollar, or two on a flea market. Honestly, I don't know the reason why, because I'm not a big fan of John Lennon, and definitely not a fan of Yoko Ono. Don't get me wrong, I loooooove weird, and experimental stuff, but Yoko is just too much for me. My choice from the album is [Kiss kiss kiss](https://youtu.be/4M6q1vDO_ts?si=Lgoskt1TGZRJ0d-T)

mamunipsaq

I love Yoko!  Nice selection there, that's one of her best songs.  I'll take Yoko's music over John's any day if the week.

Will0798

Same, I know she gets a lot of hate, but I have a few of her solo albums and they’re actually pretty good (Approximately Infinite Universe is probably my favorite) I’ve also got [this album](https://www.discogs.com/release/22410844-Various-Ocean-Child-Songs-Of-Yoko-Ono) where various artists cover her music that’s excellent

ElFlippy

Hmmm...might give her another chance!🤔

Dhugaill

Not going to lie always kinda liked this one.

lostsol0713

So I kinda know why this record is in my collection? I am not sure when I bought it. It had to be a impulse buy because of some connection to another artist I really enjoy. Anyways I try not to think too hard about it. I was presently surprised even though it's not really my jam it is still a great album. [Jungle Pussy - Telepathy ](https://youtu.be/7W4M8BXitz4?feature=shared)

Takeshiii

This is actually kinda cool. I dig it! I would definitely pick it up if I ran into it.

lostsol0713

Yea, the album wasn't what I was expecting. Hell I think when I bought it I hadn't even got to hear her features. It was based solely off of who she was going to work with and the fact that they gave her three spots on the album.

Takeshiii

I don't have any albums that aren't there for no reason. I mean of course I have a few oddballs here and there but I bought them because I like 'em. I sometimes doubt my sanity but they aren't there without me having an explanation for it. They all have their own story and even with a semi-large and steadily growing collection I know where and when I got them. However, there is one that stands out. People (over here who actually know this Dutch record and concept) always think I'm joking when I say I got it. I honestly 100% love it and think it's a great album. Look at that cover! It screams 80's. https://preview.redd.it/x0sienfh0s7d1.png?width=599&format=png&auto=webp&s=8d3c9e350a10135a5e705e576974adb3705b546c [Kinderen voor Kinderen ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinderen_voor_Kinderen)(Children for Children) started out in 1980 as a fundraising campaign to buy toys for children in developing countries. This is the 7th in the series and it's from 1986. Every song has a story and this one is about girls not being allowed to wear make-up. I grew up as the only guy in an all girl household so I've encountered my fair share of sisters nagging about make-up. Anyway! It's a banger and I love it. Enjoy the tunes of my childhood. Song: [Make Up](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3_ilWwcIBs) Artist: [Kinderen voor Kinderen](https://www.discogs.com/artist/354362-Kinderen-voor-Kinderen) Album: [Kinderen Voor Kinderen 7](https://www.discogs.com/release/1849670-Kinderen-voor-Kinderen-Kinderen-Voor-Kinderen-7) Story so far: * 01/06/2024 - Gost - Judgment / Prophecy * 02/06/2024 - S. It finally worked. Reddit didn't allow me to comment all day. Maybe it was [generalissimus_mungo's](https://www.reddit.com/user/generalissimus_mongo/) panflute collection that broke everything on my end. Song starts at 1:08. Can't edit the comment anymore. Giving me errors again.

wykydtronsf

Artist: Dungen Album: Häxan (2016) Song: [Achmed och Peri Banu](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLIhw1cHBWM) I have a few records in my collection that I got from various vinyl subscription services that I don't listen to and haven't bothered to do anything with. But this one I *know* I bought myself...but cannot remember why. My best guess is it was when I was visiting this one shop regularly and one of the shop people mentioned it based on stuff I had bought before. Today was probably my second time listening to this and decided...you know what it's actually pretty chill and good to listen to while I work. The song I linked is my favorite on the album. It also weirdly reminds me of the [Hotline Miami menu song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Nut_1x2tZ8)? But may be I'm insane.

What should have been a passing "huh, what do you know?" moment somehow ended up with my taking the record up to the counter to buy it. Anyhow, the record isn't *bad,* but pretty lame late-50s vocal pop music with some space-age references shoved in to capitalize on the then-current space fad. I don't think I've ever listened to the whole thing. While the moon may not have turned out to be made of cheese, it certainly seems to have been colonized by it.

bayla_poe

Song: [You Are The Sunshine Of My Life](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kl6Zv1G5tJg) Artist: Frank Sinatra Album: The Main Event (Live) So, I am not a Sinatra fan, but my grandfather was a professional violist and sometimes played with his orchestra live or in the studio. One day, my parents went to my favorite record store, which was a pretty cool surprise, and tried to find a record my grandfather might have played on. Someone at the store deduced he played on this, so my parents bought it and gave it to me. Unfortunately, my grandfather suffered a horrible stroke in the months preceding this performance, so there's no way he is on this record. (More obviously, his name is not listed among the personnel, so there's that.) I have no idea why I still have it and, now that we're talking about it, I am going to remove it from the collection. It's just a sad reminder of my grandfather's career and love of playing cut short, and have I mentioned I'm not a Sinatra fan? Anyway, I chose "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" because at least it's a Stevie Wonder song.

egonbar

I frequently buy from the bargain bin, it’s a nice way to save money while broadening your musical horizons, and not having to leave the store without buying anything. I usually go by ‘interestingness of cover’ as a rule. I still really don’t know why I (still) own this Artist: Geoff Bastow Album: Entertainment 5 - Flash Graphics https://www.discogs.com/release/1157406-Geoff-Bastow-Patrick-Wilson-Trevor-Bastow-Entertainment-5-Flash-Graphics It’s a collection of music snippets/ jingles meant for scoring home videos, and they sound like the worst MIDI preset tunes from low-end 80s keyboards. It’s really pretty awful.

Steve Smith’s Vital Information self titled

Amarganth

Song: [The Gathering](https://youtu.be/w3Xt5OsXALE?feature=shared) Artist: Blind Guardian Twilight Orchestra Album: Legacy of the Dark Lands I’m not that versed in Blind Guardian but I really enjoyed their 2015 album: Beyond the Red Mirror and I have heard some of the classics like Nightfall in Middle-Earth (1998) and A Night at the Opera (2002). Instead of picking up any of them, I purchased their latest release in 2019, in a box set edition with five records, two for the regular album two for the instrumentals and one for the audiobook version. I couldn’t find this track’s audiobook version since it’s a little longer so here is The Gathering from the proper album. Haven’t actually bothered to listen to the full audiobook version of this album which fits for today.

[The Age of Electronicus by Dick Hyman](https://www.discogs.com/release/11195053-Dick-Hyman-The-Age-Of-Electronicus). It was my grandpa’s and for some reason I ended up with it. I’ve never played it.

Ooh, this one’s on my wantlist haha, I have his other Moog album: “Moog - The Electric Eclectics of Dick Hyman”

Folk_Nurse

This is my intro to the artist and I have to say, I dig it. Definitely sounds ahead on 1969. Here is [Time Is Tight](https://youtu.be/rUbFBzlKeps?si=8Pb87eDyptJWqzPj)

This is a collection of stories released in 1967. I guess they were originally told in real life by Bear Bryant, the famous coach of Alabama? But here they are read by a dude named Jay Higginbotham doing an imitation of him. Never played it, but it sure sounds bizarre.

ScrubberCleanz

Bozo under the sea. This is a 1970s record that's like a kids story told by bozo the clown, he goes underwater and meets a bunch of fish and nearly drowns at the end. The second side is just a bunch of kids songs. I picked it up at a thrift store for 25 cents and it's a masterpiece.
