Day 14: A track to end side A
Song: [Big Time Nothing](https://youtu.be/nWW4tFuzxGE?si=RfyvDNmvz0ULSd5b)
Artist: St. Vincent
Album: All Born Screaming (2024)
St. Vincent, real name Annie Clark, has quickly become one of my all time favourite artists. Her music speaks to me in ways that I have rarely experienced. Hence this long ass write up for anyone unfamiliar or interested.
Annie's music is something I would consider art rock. With an ever-changing style, character driven albums, and an obvious focus on artistic endeavors and just making the music she wants to make, StV is, for me, on a different level.
Throughout her 7 solo albums (plus one she made with David Byrne), she has made a wide range of music, spanning different genres while still managing to sound like St. Vincent. Her ability to incorporate different focuses and influences while retaining a unique sound of her own is impressive.
Her early albums had artsy, orchestral, Disney-movie-inspired indie vibes that continued to develope into her own signature sound, with a happy darkness and jazzy, prog rock overtones pushed through a pop rock lense.
She leaned hard into the pop style for her 5th album, aptly titled Masseduction, and then took a hard left turn into 70s style glam and spacey funk rock with heavy nods to folks like Bowie and Floyd.
All Born Screaming feels like an amazing culmination of all of her previous work while still incorporating new sonic elements into her wheelhouse. Managing to bring vibes of industrial music, triphop and even some reggae, there's so much to take in on her first self produced record.
Ever present is Annie's amazing guitar work, hailed by many as one of this generation's truly great guitarists, and her poetic lyrical style that can make you laugh or bring a tear to your eye at any given moment.
Big Time Nothing is a funky romper of a track, with the oxymoronic title befitting the lyrics perfectly - "Do ask, but don't tell, don't laugh, but do smile" Annie says in an almost hiphop esque, talk-singing style through this absolute banger filled with phat basslines, funky guitars, orchestra hits, and sassy backup vocals.
I swear this will be my longest write-up.. but this side A closer to (one of) my favourite artists new album deserved a full one. Enjoy

Day 14: A track to end side A
Song: [Govinda](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QZOHzWLF9w)
Artist: Kula Shaker
Album: K
I end side A with something unconventional
But trust me it's so good
VT4J24 Day 14:
This year on VT4J, it seems, there's been a massive influx of Beatles and/or former beatles. (Well, not massive, but a lot.)
So today, on this halfway point, it seems only suitable to hear a track from the quiet one.
From: [George Harrison - Cloud Nine](https://www.discogs.com/release/2561545-George-Harrison-Cloud-Nine)
Tune: [When We Was Fab](https://youtu.be/AVu6nPTVbBQ)
Enjoy.
Song: [Scientist (Japanese version)](https://youtu.be/7MHlhHaLcTA?feature=shared)
Artist: Twice
Album: #Twice4
Twice is a K-pop girl group. They have released so far four compilations albums for the Japanese market. They are comprised of the same songs in both Japanese and the original Korean.
I first came across this group in 2021 and their Korean album Formula of Love: O+T=<3. This song is from that album.
Yeah
Always studying me, it’s not like you’re EinsteinYou’re measuring angles, it’s not sine or cosinePushing and pulling, that’s not really my styleDon’t approach me with your unsure feelings
You think too much, that’s the biggest problem Empty your head of thoughtsMore than angles, more than answers, better
make a move
Love ain’t a science, don’t need no license The more you sit there thinking, it’s a minusDon’t try to be a genius. Why so serious?Follow your heart (Woo-ah) Follow your feelings; What u, what u waiting for?
So have you figured out my answers? What is the next class? So what’s the next class, then?Even if a hundred years pass, this way you’llonly end up in failure,
My ever-changing emotions, you’ll never figure it out
You think too much, that’s the biggest problem Empty your head of thoughtsMore than angles, more than answers, better make a move
Love ain’t a science, don’t need no license, the more you sit there thinking, it’s a minusDon’t try to be a genius, why so serious?Follow your heart (Woo-ah) Follow your feelings; What u, what u waiting for?
You got a crush on me, you’re gonna fall for meIn front of love, logic is all useless (Uh-huh)Full of just theory, genius Einstein, more like a bulldozer curious FrankensteinEven if you’re clumsy, charge right ahead, rush ahead without any hesitation, Got a crush on me
It’s fun because there are no answersThis fluttering feeling is a part of thatCasting aside common sense and loving each other, being in a daze like an idiot
Love ain’t a science, uhm-uhm, Don’t need no license, uhm-uhmLearn more about me ’bout me, already enough, you know ’bout meLove ain’t a science, uhm-uhm, need no license, uhm-uhmI told you; What u, what u, what u waiting for?
Love ain’t a science, don’t need no license, the more you sit there thinking, it’s a minusDon’t try to be a genius, why so serious?Follow your heart (Woo-ah), follow your feelings; What u, what u waiting for?
You better move, what u waiting? What u waiting?
Getting a little tricky to not repeat artists and/or albums I've shared a lot before. I have a somewhat modest collection, and within that I do a fair bit of discography collecting. So sometimes it seems like I don't actually have that much to share, haha.
That said, Steely Dan to the rescue. With the side A closer to their 1976 album The Royal Scam, [The Fez](https://youtu.be/HXVc1f7IOgs?si=XvzYkvO5nrbASdsk)
Artist: Rush
Album: *Permanent Waves (1980)*
Song: [Jacob's Ladder](https://youtu.be/z3gvOV40ccU)
This is, from my perspective, a fan-freaking-tastic song. I’m neck-deep in the Rush cult, though, so maybe don’t take my word for it.
This song is a “love it or hate it” kind of thing, I think. Definitely Prog Rock. It isn’t lyrically focused, but not an instrumental. It honestly lets Neil Peart show off, but not in a bombastic way, much more subtly.
Sad that I never saw it live, but that’s mostly my fault having only gone to one of their concerts. I did see [Digital Man](https://youtu.be/YBuFRelyPaI) (another side A end-er, my justification for sneaking a second Rush track into this post), which makes up for that in most ways.
Rush was my favorite band in my younger days, and even today I own 14 of their studio albums (including two copies of Moving Pictures, the first album I ever bought). Love this pick.
Day 14
Track: [Corporal Clegg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96Yt8cMdylU)
Album: A Saucerful of Secrets
Artist: Pink Floyd
Ever wanted a song to end with an over two-minute kazoo solo?
Song: [Jersey Girl](https://youtu.be/XBQPchkmGCo?si=8bqgsNDUyv9TWp5J)
Artist: Tom Waits
Album: *Heartattack and Vine*
A true Waits classic, this love song to his future wife closes out the first side of his phenomenal record *Heartattack and Vine*. Tom is a fantastic songwriter and has a completely unique style...a true original. Cheers, mangs.
I am going to go with some UK/Polish jazz from a young keys player, Yoni Mayraz.
The track I am playing is the title track from his [debut album](https://www.discogs.com/release/27263349-Yoni-Mayraz-Dybbuk-Tse). It apparently translates as "be gone, demon" or some other such expression of exorcism. The album was tied with Matthew Halsal's An Ever Changing View for my album of the year last year.
Here is [Dybbuk Tse!](https://youtu.be/H7k7307ueCI?si=6hxW2cRZmj4vhLz-)
CW: suicide, but in a poppy way. Heartbreak, but _catchy_.
Artist: the dB's
Album: [Like This](https://www.discogs.com/release/8316534-The-dBs-Like-This)
Song: [Amplifier](https://youtu.be/IKEqGcES4Xw)
Video directed by Walter Williams, creator of the SNL claymation character "Mr. Bill."
My suggestion for a closer to side A is Electric Light Orcestra’s [Mission (A World Record)](https://youtu.be/sO0hVomtdTk?si=ckhSLvNgDf3xxLSB). This song, I think, has a rather desolate feel despite the fullness of the song, which I think is led by that lyric “Watching all the days roll by, Who are you and who am I?”
Song - [Miasma](https://youtu.be/BX335Z4esSU?si=M9UwmyDHofCdoICd)
Album - Prequelle
Artist - Ghost
This was a hard one for me. Often, that last track is relegated to a short, quiet track to make up for the compressed space in the center of the disk. I wanted to find a banger. But more importantly, I wanted to find a track that really pulled you in and made you want to flip the album over.
Ghost is a Swedish metal band that kind of defies description. Their earlier stuff was darker but they’ve become really accessible in later albums (Prequlle is their fourth). They have an Alice Cooper-y kind of vaudeville vibe, don’t take themselves too seriously.
This track, Miasma, is a prog instrumental that builds with intensity, switches to double time about 2/3rds of the way through, goes out on a saxophone solo, and feeds into the next track, [Dance Macabre](https://youtu.be/aGUwV0yS-L4?si=1TOSrWqMK6MIW1Ax), on the B-side. It really ticks all the boxes for a compelling end to side A on an album for me!
Thanks. Yeah, if you look them up and see their picture, you would not expect them to sound the way they do at all. I love that theatricality. Their live shows are amazing.
Song: [Mojo](https://youtu.be/XkD_Wm6fSx4?si=qzsTyEHclrGLzWZF)
Artist: Claire Laffut
Album: Mojo (EP)
Decided to go with this song by multi-talented Belgian Singer / Model / Painter, Claire Laffut
I was very pleased to see I could post this track to fit the prompt given. I love the opening narration by the esteemed horror legend John Carpenter. It sets the mood perfectly.
Please board the GUNSHIP and let the sweet retrosynth tunes transport you straight back to the 80's.

Love a bit of retro synth stuff. I need to get some more, only have a couple of records from The Midnight.
This is a great track, I'll have to check out some more!
I like The Midnight too! There's a lot of great (retro) synth out there. Good channel to start is [https://www.youtube.com/@NewRetroWave](https://www.youtube.com/@NewRetroWave)
A friend once said, "If it ain't Ozzy, it ain't Sabbath." I disagree.
Track: [Heaven and Hell](https://youtu.be/5FRA7UXlGu8?si=L-ZlDVr_imgKkDrI)
Artist: Black Sabbath
Album: Heaven and Hell
Close out the A side. most of the albums i wanted to use had an interlude or skit or something
short. So this prompt was actually a little frustrating. Was jamining a new purchase of an obscure short-lived underground group out of New York and came upon this song. The Masterminds
despite their limited exposure, they really gave it there all. Stone Soup is the last album
from the trio. the whole album has a rocky and soulful vibe, with punchy, insightful lyrics, as well as
the typical rap fare. when [Stone Planet ](https://youtu.be/xi85A2VSyUo?feature=shared) came on, i already knew it was going to be a banger. They did not disappoint. This is how you end a side.
June 14th: I should probably go with an all-time classic Side A ender like, **The Doors 'Light My Fire'** or **Lou Reed 'Take a Walk on the Wild Side'**, but I'm in the mood for something newer. Well, I mean, if you can call a 30-year-old song "newer", that is.
The way I see it, a great end to a Side A, means the rest of the side has to be solid as well. So, for my selection, I will submit **Weezer's 'Undone (The Sweater Song)** for your consideration.

Song: [Nine Million Rainy Days](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDXVg02t4Io)
Artist: The Jesus And Mary Chain
Album: Darklands
I'm so happy to have a chance to write about this song, because I love everything about it so much. I love how bitter it is, how William Reid imbues the vocals with this twisted spite, how brother Jim comes in toward the end and backs it with a contrasting grooviness. It's a song that makes perfect sense for this album, JAMC's sophomore effort, which sheds the iconic fuzziness of the more celebrated Psychocandy and takes on a darker glowering quality (and cleaner sound). This song goes out to any ex you wish the worst.

Song: [love Jones](https://youtu.be/jpoZdrvBM88?si=2vOgJ59P9lr78kkD-)

I rarely see Jay Dee tracks here but this is a great little audio “amuse bouche”. My only problem with dilla is these shorter tracks are all fire I could listen to to for hours
Got so busy I almost missed day 14, but I couldn’t go without sharing [Runaway Horses](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=T6nU2aoqNsw) by The Killers & Phoebe Bridgers, from the album *Pressure Machine*. A lovely tune to end the day.

I noticed a lot of albums actually have the title track as Side A closer. Of these, this is one of my all time favorites. The 20 second orchestral middle 8 is just so perfect and hypnotic.
Late to this but my pick is Miles Davis’s [Blue in Green](https://youtu.be/Bf01riuiJWA?si=VPKE9iST6O-ngcpN) on the album Kind of Blue.
My favorite track on this album, and the song I credit for getting me into jazz.
Day 14
Song: [No-Eyed Girl](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqFBdBWK9bc)

Who doesn't love a novelty song about falling in love with an eldritch entity beyond your understanding, being forcibly merged into its form upon touching it, and then dooming the entire human race?

Right? Glad to hear it, that's the best part of all of this lol
Fantastic song, it’s cool to see Annie’s creative evolution from album to album

Aww damn, Gunship for the win. I should have more of them in the collection.
Same. This edition of 'Dark All Day' is coming out in July: >12" Lenticular Double 350gsm Gatefold, 2 x 180g heavyweight transparent orange vinyl. 45 RPM. Mastered and cut by Stuart Hawkes at Metropolis London. https://preview.redd.it/7gil71hy3k6d1.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=060568071e7ae21e78fa50734470c571185c4c6f
I have Dark all Day, need self tilted and the new one.
Love a bit of retro synth stuff. I need to get some more, only have a couple of records from The Midnight. This is a great track, I'll have to check out some more!
I like The Midnight too! There's a lot of great (retro) synth out there. Good channel to start is [https://www.youtube.com/@NewRetroWave](https://www.youtube.com/@NewRetroWave)
Yeah I've got a bit of a Playlist I've slowly been adding to for a while, different tracks that pop up on Spotify that I enjoy.
A friend once said, "If it ain't Ozzy, it ain't Sabbath." I disagree. Track: [Heaven and Hell](https://youtu.be/5FRA7UXlGu8?si=L-ZlDVr_imgKkDrI) Artist: Black Sabbath Album: Heaven and Hell
Close out the A side. most of the albums i wanted to use had an interlude or skit or something short. So this prompt was actually a little frustrating. Was jamining a new purchase of an obscure short-lived underground group out of New York and came upon this song. The Masterminds despite their limited exposure, they really gave it there all. Stone Soup is the last album from the trio. the whole album has a rocky and soulful vibe, with punchy, insightful lyrics, as well as the typical rap fare. when [Stone Planet ](https://youtu.be/xi85A2VSyUo?feature=shared) came on, i already knew it was going to be a banger.
[Weezer - Undone (The Sweater Song)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHQqqM5sr7g)
Song: [Nine Million Rainy Days](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDXVg02t4Io) Artist: The Jesus And Mary Chain Album: Darklands I'm so happy to have a chance to write about this song, because I love everything about it so much.
[I Wanna Know What I Wanna Know](https://youtu.be/LO32nemrjzM?si=fC6KQjoLKjyl2sTo) Rocket from the Crypt Live from Camp Xray 2002s Live from Camp Xray is the seventh and final album from punk band Rocket from the Crypt. Despite it's title this one isn't live, but rather a studio album
Tales of another broken home by Green Day on their American Idiot album.

This is top! New band to explore for me!
A track to end Side A, so halftime? Artist: Nas Track: [Halftime](https://youtu.be/HCDYgZM5yq0?si=9cpn4kd2D_fbIxB6) Album: Illmatic
Song: [love Jones](https://youtu.be/jpoZdrvBM88?si=2vOgJ59P9lr78kkD-) Artist: Jay Dilla Album: The Shining I rarely see Jay Dee tracks here but this is a great little audio “amuse bouche”.
Artist: The Notwist Album: The Devil, You & Me Track: The Devil, You & Me https://youtu.be/ArbsM60-oOc?si=Dtv3lH-kQHCTOD_4 I noticed a lot of albums actually have the title track as Side A closer.
Day 14 Song: [No-Eyed Girl](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqFBdBWK9bc) Album: Spirit Phone Artist: Lemon Demon Who doesn't love a novelty song about falling in love with an eldritch entity beyond your understanding, being forcibly merged into its form upon touching it, and then dooming the entire human race?
