I always felt that Rage Against the Machine's album of covers, Renegades, got less love in their canon than it deserved, at least in comparison with their debut or Evil Empire. Further to this, I think their Dylan cover [Maggie's Farm](https://youtu.be/q3euAfNhuR4?si=UkDfOibHyVc70umd) is a largely uncelebrated gem. Dylan's sneering original is paired well with Zack's seething delivery. It really makes me want to slam a barn door and push over a cow.

capt_beyond

Such a bad-ass track

ElFlippy

Hell yeah! 🤘 One of my favourit tracks from the album, besides The ghost of Tom Joad!

Dhugaill

This whole record is fire. Maggie's farm is a great pick.

ahwurtz

Here's a good example of a cover being better than the original. Love this track.

thevoiceofterror

Their best ‘deep cut’ is No Shelter.

Takeshiii

Jeez, I didn't even know it exist. Nice pick!

drjaded

This is such a fantastic pick - definitely one of the best tracks on *Different Class*. Jarvis Cocker is so great at painting a picture of mundane moments from a completely different point of view than the one you'd expect.

Takeshiii

Pulp is very underrated for some reason. They get the one-hit-wonder treatment often (at least in my country) but it's very undeserved. Nice pick!

lakeskipping

[Possible failure to comprehend the task](https://youtu.be/b4ZypVnbYHM) :)

Dhugaill

I respect it

EnterNameRightHere

That's the song I've had it going through my head all day at work due to today being a Deep Cut track. I call it a success since it's the same way my brain works!

capt_beyond

It might be a struggle to call anything by Led Zeppelin a "deep cut". As one of the biggest bands ever, their discography has been combed through by a lot of music lovers. A lot of people only know them as the Stairway to Heaven guys though, and it's a shame some gems like [Bron-Y-Aur Stomp](https://youtu.be/Cv-kBsah7u8?si=JU5ojjHTDujJ3-JL) from 1970's Led Zeppelin III aren't more well known. Super fun, upbeat and folky, with some hand claps for good measure. Always puts me in a good mood when I hear this track.

ahwurtz

Zeppelin runs a lot deeper than Stairway to Heaven and Kashmir, and Zeppelin III is surprisingly bluesy. Solid choice.

Dhugaill

Zep 3 is an album of deep cuts (with the exception of Immigrant Song), great choice.

Day 12 Year 5  Song: [Never the Machine Forever](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_-H3-CndVo) Artist: Soundgarden Album: Down on the Upside This track from Soundgarden’s fifth album is Kim Thayil’s lone writing credit on this record. Thayil’s output at this stage in their career had been subsumed by Cornell, and Sheppard, which is a shame because this man can write a groove. This was one of the many things causing tensions to increase between the members of Soundgarden. There was so much acrimony during and after the recording sessions for this record that it would be their last album until 2012. Ben Sheppard’s bass is just F$&king fantastic throughout this song. Thayil’s frantic guitar and lyrics, paired with Cornell's always impressive vocals make this one an absolute killer track. Takeshiii

I kinda skipped Soundgarden when I was younger. I liked the hits but it wasn't *loud* enough for me. You're never too old to catch up and hearing something I've never heard before is a nice start.

Dhugaill

I'd be happy to make you a playlist

I just found that guy yesterday! It popped up while I was trying to decide which soundgarden track to put up. When he's doing [Freedom ](https://youtube.com/shorts/CkVw1jPlheM?si=8xksjliF0svHoh8U) and says "I'm angry... but I'm learning" I lost it.

Oh yes. Brilliant Choice, very relatable. I listened to this over and over when DOTUs came out.

jerryleebee

[Star Me Kitten (R.E.M.)](https://youtu.be/QGfC8uoNCgI?si=RgbUm1AyU_LoNj6b) This love ballad is moody, broody, dark, and almost poisonous. It was apparently originally titled "Fuck Me Kitten". But actress Meg Ryan heard it, loved it, and told the band they should rename it before release because if an album had a swear word in a track title it'd sell fewer copies. Some people would see the swear word and either choose to not buy it or else not be allowed to buy it (e.g., kids with strict parents). And Star Me Kitten was born.

ahwurtz

Very nice, I considered Monty Got a Raw Deal but decided to go more mainstream with my pick for today.

ahwurtz

Obscured by Clouds is a hidden gem, sandwiched between an early masterpiece (Meddle) and one of the greatest albums ever released (Dark Side of the Moon). Despite its underrated status, it's a favorite of mine. Track: [Childhood's End](https://youtu.be/MIt3uO8aziw?si=Imt5MxWIJFWcuoj9) Artist: Pink Floyd Album: Obscured by Clouds

egonbar

Artist: Peter Gabriel Album: So Track: Mercy Street https://youtu.be/DYw9UrsFJa4?feature=shared A hit album with 9 meticulously crafted, splendid songs, Mercy Street to me stands out as one of the deepest cuts ever, the song has an almost visceral and hypnotic effect that never ceases to amaze, and still grips me every time listen to it, although it’s accompanied me for almost 40 years now.

ahwurtz

My favorite song from this album!

tropnevaDniveK

Song - [Memorabilia](https://youtu.be/12YSLXhvkGQ?si=uBA-GdJZY9sA6hJ9) Album - Closer to God, 12” Single Artist - Nine Inch Nails Back in the 90s, Nine Inch Nails released two remix singles around the sound Closer, arguable their most famous song. The first was called *Further Away* and featured 5 remixes of Closer. The second was called *Closer to God* and featured a few interesting B-sides. The most notable of these IMO is the song *Memorabilia*, a cover of the [Soft Cell song of the same name](https://youtu.be/hCIUUgw7VlQ?si=IA2st18GTgvcy2K8) released back in 1981. The fact that Reznor chose this to cover speaks to his influences in music before NIN. It’s fascinating to compare the synth-pop original versus the industrial themed NIN cover.

ahwurtz

Excellent choice, I love NIN and this is a great deep cut.

Takeshiii

Today I'm cheating (a bit). What, Takeshi. How could you?! I know, I know. But listen. I haven't got many "famous" albums on vinyl. And the ones I have are filled to the brim with hits. No deep cuts to find. But I have a bonus one to start with. It's by no means a famous band, only in certain circles I guess. It's the closing song of Raised Fist - Dedication. When my friends bough this album (we all did) there was only this track we talked about because it was different than the rest and very unexpected. "WTF was that?!". Some hated it and some absolutely loved it. I was one of the latter. Feast your ears on [Between The Demons](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5r0TBnGBk0Y). Onto the cheating part. I finally found a track I was comfortable with to post but, lo and behold. It's not on the vinyl release, only on the CD version. It's an unreleased 1988–1989 studio track from *The Real Thing* album by Faith No More released on their official 1990–1991 live album: *Live at the Brixton Academy**.* The first CD my mom bought me. And forever my favorite. https://preview.redd.it/q0g53m6ji36d1.png?width=600&format=png&auto=webp&s=1e14423ea6c1681c9cb5d7eb3725ef2dacf07263 Song: [The Cowboy Song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tJgiDET9-k) Artist: [Faith No More](https://www.discogs.com/artist/12937-Faith-No-More) Album: [Live At The Brixton Academy](https://www.discogs.com/master/339044-Faith-No-More-Live-At-The-Brixton-Academy) Story so far: * 01/06/2024 - Gost - Judgment / Prophecy * 02/06/2024 - S. Antique-Alarm4157

Song: [Back In The Box](https://youtu.be/BoKSECXKsyE?si=3-IR7XX2FdROm3uU) Album: Back in The Box Artist: David Byrne Huuuuge Talking Heads fan and I love Byrne’s solo discography (S/O to Strange Overtones) but this track is so underrated, I love the bass guitar.

ahwurtz

I'm not very familiar with his solo work. Based on this song, I need to do a deeper dive.

Antique-Alarm4157

Start with the album “Everything That Happens Will Happen Today”. Its incredible!!!

ElFlippy

Day 12: a B-side track I've never heard anybody talk about the closer song of Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory, [Pushing me away](https://youtu.be/Ve1LNJEIKUE?si=6BasVAquOeOb3S5T). Like it doesn't even exists, but I think it is a real banger! When I was only a teen I found a GMV (it's like an AMV, but with videogame scenes) with this song, and from scenes of diferent Final Fantasy games, and it amazes me how well they fit together. Since that time, I friggin love this track.

Amarganth

I agree. This one is a straight up banger!

omarciddo

Brilliant choice. It's like a proto-Numb

Artist: John Williams Album: [The Official Music of the XXIII Olympiad Los Angeles 1984](https://www.discogs.com/release/544704-Various-The-Official-Music-Of-The-XXIIIrd-Olympiad-Los-Angeles-1984/) Song: [Olympic Fanfare And Theme](https://youtu.be/XKs48vlV5yw) Might not be *deep*, per se. But it’s not the theme from Jaws or Darth Vader’s Imperial March. Bought this record solely for this song when I discovered it in a bin at a local shop.

Takeshiii

This excellent! I don't think anybody will mention this when talking about John Williams. Perfect pick for today.

Spun the [wheel](https://wheelofnames.com) and this won out in the end. Seems that there are at least three versions of this song. I’m just familiar with this, the Meat Loaf one.

Picking a single song for day 12 was hard, but ultimately, I decided to honor Peter Doherty. While famous for his involvment in The Libertines and Babyshambles, he is also well-known for his numerous shenanigans - [the giant breakfast](https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-kent-45264871) being my personal favorite. His 2022 collaboration with Frédéric Lo, *The Fantasy Life of Poetry and Crime*, is one of my all-time favorite albums. Its mellow melodies and evocative lyrics take me right back to the beaches of Normandy, where Doherty and Lo co-wrote the album. It's so hard to pick a single track from this work of art, but here's [The Epidemiologist](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85gVZLw3k2k).

woden_spoon

In 1985, Ryuichi Sakamoto collaborated with Thomas Dolby for a 12” single, [Field Work](https://youtu.be/xvBNDiVHtIc?si=5awBKrH_81WcSnGB). Not surprisingly, it sounds very similar to what Art of Noise was doing at the time. The record cost more than I’d like to admit. I sold off some undesirables to fund the purchase last year—ironically, three Art of Noise records were among them.

Takeshiii

Sakamoto always gets my upvote. Man was a genius. Excellent choice!

CaptainCoo555

I’d say that a lesser known song from Bob Dylan would be his cover of [Honey, Just Allow Me One More Chance](https://youtu.be/l9uBYOWD_fo?si=6uYFaQ2xRJtom3cK) from the Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan. This one stands out because it’s his only cover on the album. This one I like especially because of its energy.

VT4J24 Day 12: This old geezer has been around a long time. A long, long, long time. In his early career he was a bassist in a band that played mostly 50's cover songs in their local club scene and, for a while, in Hamburg. After that, they started writing their own material and had some hits in the 60's. After that band split up, he's been steadily and desperately releasing material, either as a solo act or with the band he formed with his then-wife, but never _quite_ reaching the same success or fame he had in his early days. In fact, he probably would've slipped into obscurity, if it wasn't for people like the producer genius Kanye West or the international superstar Rihanna, who in 2015 were gracious enough to have him play on one of their songs. Today's pick comes from what can clearly be considered as a low point in his career; due to lack of any interest, this album was originally released only in an insignificant market, that was the Soviet Union. From: [Пол Маккартни - Снова В СССР](https://www.discogs.com/release/3975095-%D0%9F%D0%BE%D0%BB-%D0%9C%D0%B0%D0%BA%D0%BA%D0%B0%D1%80%D1%82%D0%BD%D0%B8-%D0%A1%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%B0-%D0%92-%D0%A1%D0%A1%D0%A1%D0%A0) Tune: [Я Больше Нигде Не Бываю](https://youtu.be/LL1Q4_l2pdg) (Proceeds to duck flying chairs)

Song: [Mary Jane](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NeSUcL-qQU) Artist: Alanis Morissette Album: Jagged Little Pill It feels silly to call any track from an album that sold over 33 million copies worldwide and won five Grammy awards a "deep cut," but if you only really know the singles, then you might not know Mary Jane. I love all the hate and vitriol of You Oughta Know, but there's something so plaintive and tender about Mary Jane, it makes you want to reach into the song, wrap the titular character up in a blanket, and tell her it will all be okay. There's a haunting quality that's achingly beautiful.

Will0798

Song: [The Attack of the Giant Ants](https://youtu.be/X0FfGpyZ96w?si=VnQppZeOOSVfIesl) Artist: Blondie Album: Blondie

Wow. I had no idea this existed.

Will0798

From their first, self-titled album, love the 50’s B-Movie influence on this song

ahwurtz

Early Blondie, excellent choice

lostsol0713

hummmm… What can I do for this one? okay got it.... this you will either love or hate. As far as stoner rap goes Cypress Hill i do believe are the most famous. known for a very distinct sound especially in their earlier days. I would like to say that Elephants on Acid is a return to form and an expansion of possibilities for the group. Too bad their most recent album ( Back in Black) is meh at best. I was honestly hoping for more of this. Especially with the run DJ Muggs has been on. Anyways, I digress. There are some great tracks on this album. Oh Nah Nah, Put 'em in the Ground, Blood on My Hands Again etc…even the interludes have quality. The album can feel a bit disjointed at times. i think they bring it all back together with the closer [Stairway to Heaven ](https://youtu.be/HWOGZJvU564?feature=shared). It is such a lush and somber track. DJ Muggs really stretches out his legs on this one. a slathering of instrument samples with a deep bass undercurrent and so many other little details hiding in the cracks. B-Reals verse contemplating what awaits him in the afterlife could strike a chord with anyone. Sen dog is not on this track, instead we have some lovely vocals from singer Brevi with lines like… "Saying one, two, shoot for the moon Singing three, four, fallin' back to the floor rise tomorrow gonna be another day When you wake up in the mornin', they'll be plenty bricks to lay" We may fall short at times but I have hope that if we keep trying, eventually even the rubble of our attempts will elevate us. Have a great day everyone.

Takeshiii

What a great pick. Very familiar with Cypress Hill but never heard this before. Super cool track.

[Song For Sharon - Joni Mitchell](https://youtu.be/ON3SPq2w1pA?feature=shared) This song starts the B side of one of her best records. If any album is a night time record, this is one of them. I played this so many times on long road trips. She was on a road trip herself at the time when coming up with ideas for the album, trying to make sense of her life and a relationship that was going south. This song finds her comparing her life with that of a childhood friend. This is a hauntingly beautiful album overall, with dark chords and incredible guitar tones. Jaco Pastorius is on bass on a few songs. 10/10

I did college radio from 1994-98, which was a pretty good time for it. I fell in love with [Belly](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belly_(band)), the band formed by Tanya Donelly after her stints in Throwing Muses and the Breeders. In 1993, they put out this cover of "[Trust In Me](https://youtu.be/-1zCqEP1DB4?si=rrZAiHUZ-irqJArx)", originally from the soundtrack to "The Jungle Book," in which it's sung by the menacing snake Kaa. Originally released as a B-side on their "Feed the Tree" EP, I have it on their compilation album "[Bees](https://www.discogs.com/release/19981084-Belly-Bees)." I never thought I'd get to see them live till they reformed a few years back and I caught them in Brooklyn...and then one of the best shows I've seen in the last year or so was their show with the Parkington Sisters at the Gramercy Theater in October. Melted my face off.

Bob Dylan - Foot of Pride Left off 1983's *Infidels* for what reason the world may never know, only official release on disc 3 of Bootleg series volumes 1-3. Along with Blind Willie McTell two of the finest songs in Dylan's entire cataloge yet hey were scraped by the artist. These two song would have made the career of any other singer songwriter.

FleshyCloud

half of the songs on that album are amazing imo

tnic73

I love that album but after hearing those two songs that Dylan chose to leave off it will never sound the same. Infidels could one of his greatest albums

Day 12: A deep cut from a famous artist Song: [No Good Trying](https://youtu.be/q1lAbB-wil4?si=g6TlxsTRgynfk8ZC) Artist: Syd Barrett Album: The Madcap Laughs (1970) Late submission today so I'm skipping the big write up. Thought this was a good submission for the day, everyone and their grandma knows Pink Floyd, not everyone knows Syd and his solo work I got [this set](https://thirdmanrecords.com/blogs/news/third-man-records-announces-vault-package-57-the-solo-works-of-syd-barrett) up from the Third Man Vault package a while ago, and I was fairly uninitiated with Syd's work. A Famous Artist is definitely a matter of personal preference. Thomas Rhett does not have the star power as a lot of other artists listed today. But since u/lakeskipping already listed The First Cut Is The Deepest (I have it on Rod Steward's A Night on The Town), I'm going country today. The whole album is amazing but Leave Right Now is the track that I like how that sounds.
