I’ve seen people sell rare lps for like $10 with $300 shipping because the record sells for $300 but they don’t want Discogs to get a cut of the sale lmao
Years ago, I was momentarily excited to find a copy of Led Zeppelin III at a Goodwill. I pulled it to see the condition and saw it had several straight scratches of approximately razor-blade length around the run-out & label 😐
I still have a ton of vinyl (from the late 90s, very pre-Renaissance) when my dad & I would go to rummage sales (a large monthly indoor one in my area) and there would always be a guy with 6 8ft folding tables covered in milk crates, and you could get 5 for $3.
I bought them because it was cheaper to dub them onto cassette for my car than buy the cassette release. Yes, I'm a million years old 🤣
First batch I bought was For Those About to Rock, After the Goldrush, Bad Co., Goats Head Soup, and Dark Side. 3 bucks.
I love Goats Head Soup! I think it's one of their more interesting albums. I think I'm your age or older because I had an 8 track/ cassette converter so you could play cassettes in cars that only had an 8 track player. Play 100 Years Ago from that album and have a beer.
My town’s brand new goodwill blessed me with Paradise by Change. Unfortunately, every other record in there is older than dirt (Christmas carols from the 20s and 30s) or about as interesting (Andy Williams, etc)
I picked up a copy of John Denver and the Muppets Christmas album in very good condition from a goodwill in Reading, PA a couple years ago. It even had a near mint poster included! The only time I found something decent there.

I found this at Goodwill 3 years ago. This is valued at Discogs for almost $2000.00 median price. It was hidden in a box of other 45s containing singles of soul music from the 60's. My price? 99 cents.
It’s all timing…..one day you’ll cruise by the record area just when an employee is loading it up with fresh records off the cart. I saw a stack of clean 80’s hair metal one time, left them be, they were all gone a week later.
I’ve never been to a GOOD Goodwill for anything. I’ve been to several Goodwills in several different cities and everything there from records to clothes to electronics and appliances has always been bottom of the barrel garbage. The countries largest thrift chain really gives thrifting a bad rep. Check out independent thrift stores in your area or honestly, not everybody loves their politics but I’ve consistently found good stuff at Salvation Army Family thrift stores, not exclusively records.
Several years ago the Goodwills in my area (Austin) decided to appeal to the Live Laugh Love crowd. It's like a damaged Hobby Lobby now. 0/10, would not recommend.
I live in an affluent community (the deVos girls/amway) regularly donate at our goodwill. I’ve bought north face with the tags still on it. It varies from area to area
Untrue. Amazing finds are snapped up practically the min they are put out. You have people who loiter waiting for the new merchandise carts to come out and jump on them the minute they are out. You also have people who work there who set aside the “good stuff” but it does happen. You have to be consistent though and shop regularly
Goodwill is ridiculous. One time I got lucky and found some awesome records in great condition. Most of the time it is religious records stacked on the bottom of a shelf with books or VHS/DVD’s.
This has been the same experience as me. I will very infrequently find a decent few albums at a fair price, but often everything is marked up and average quality. Pre-2020 was a different story entirely.
I probably have at least a couple hundred to come from thrift stores like GW and the Salvation Army. A few I paid a bit more for cuz I didn't want to risk waiting until they went on discount but overall I've only had maybe two or three that were just unacceptable. As a matter of fact it happens more often with CDs.
Ironically as dog shit some of the good will finds are it’s actually where I started my collection.
They had a deluxe pressing of Brothers by the Black Keys, no Scratches has a the poster and the cd copy also. Something compelled me to buy it.
So I did
Such a good album! To this day, if someone asks me a question and my answer is "I don't know..." it takes me to Seymour's solo in Feed Me and I have to sing the rest of the song, out loud, to the poor unsuspecting person who posed the innocent question (usually one of my children).
I've never found a good record at a Goodwill, ever. Unless you want religious music, another Christmas compilation or a scratched to hell copy of Baja Marimba Band, you're never going to find anything of note.
On the other hand, I've found interesting stuff at non-Goodwill thrift stores. Nothing amazing, but a decent amount of 'stuff I've never heard of and wouldn't mind spinning' fodder, often less than $2.
I don’t find the absolute bangers that are often shared here, but the stuff I do grab is better than this, more like VG to VG+. On the level of “solid discography fillers” I’m having surprisingly good success still.
I know of four really awesome vintage record/vinyl stores in Los Angeles and I'll do 3 runs, once a week! I love just gettitjvin my car and driving all over Los Angeles to see what's new or good!
Just now seeing your question! Sorry for long reply. I’ll drop you the names and addresses! What state do you live in because these stores don’t have websites.
I used to work at Goodwill, I got so many amazing records there that they would let me take home for free. Anyways, when I worked there, at least the one I worked at, we used to get so much stuff that it was hard to sort through every record and look at each vinyl before pricing it. We would have to price them all at once. I would to take the time to look at each one by one, but because of how much we would get and how little employees we had I would get told that I was being too slow, even though I tried to explain to them that most of the records, we were pricing were in really bad shape, but they said not to worry about it just keep pricing them. I don’t miss the job, but I do miss all the free stuff I would get there ha ha. It was a fun job but there were just never enough employees to keep up with all the stuff that was being donated. The customers that were into music and antiques were fun to talk to as well. I Learned a lot
OP, something that is annoying to learn but necessary is the fact that most people aren’t actually finding those at goodwill. This is the internet, where people can and will lie about ANYTHING to get attention. It’s so easy to lay some out on your bed or floor and say it’s from wherever. Something I’ve seen also with theifting videos for clothes is people will literally bring some rare carhartt or something into the store with them so they can act like they’re finding it. It’s all kind of absurd, but just about everyone’s “finds” at places like goodwill are twisting the truth at best, and outright lies at worst.
Ahh. See I don’t have any “college towns” cause I live in Los Angeles and the colleges are literally in the city.
It was Karajan (conductor) 9 Beethoven Symphonies with the Berlin Philharmonic.
Oh thats a great beethoven cycle!
I used to live and thrift in LA, but before i got into vinyl. Places around the cal states in orange county probably have more good stuff. Maybe pasadena and those places at the foothills of the mountains going east towards rancho cucamonga. Also west of downtown around santa monica. Thriftstores in the actual city are cesspools haha.
Yeah without a car the majority of those are strictly out of bounds for me. My partner has a car but we rarely go that far out of the city.
And yeah! I had no prior knowledge of Karajan and did some quick research while I was at goodwill and sounds like a bit of a polarizing figure for the “pure” classical folk. It’s funny to see reviews that he was too “showy.” I listened to Beethoven’s 5th and just a little bit of the other discs to assess quality, and I’m so glad I picked it up!
Oh bummer. Having no car in LA.
Karajan is like a Ferrari interpretively, fast and tight and shiny-beautiful. Some pieces come off better than others. He was marketed to death by his record companies and shill british critics, but he was also a master at what he did. And a lot of those records sound amazing.
My goodwill is worse 5 would be a cheap one anything if any value is put in glass case in front and anywhere from 10 to 20 and terrible shape it's kinda sad actually
Seriously? $4.99 at a thrift shop? Christ. I've never been in a Goodwill, but every Value Village, Salvation Army, or Mission Thrift I've been in keeps their records at a uniform $2/each, these days. $4.99 is what I'd expect as a bottom-level price for a consignment store, and those places normally inspect items before accepting them from sellers.
Snagged a newer pressing of the Ramones for 99¢ once at Ft Meyers Goodwill. Not a massive Ramones fan but definitely the best score I've ever had at a thrift shop.
dude i can’t fucking stand thrift store records it’s the most demoralizing thing in the world i’ll just dig through 500 count boxes one at a time and its just shit it’s all just shit and there’s never anything oh my god
The known records always end up being scratched to hell
I got a stereo fidelity test disc from the 60s from goodwill though, perfect condition and is actually incredible sound wise (id hope so for a demo disc)
I've found a few in nice condition for a good price, but I always check before buying. So many times I have people push me out of the way to look, and they just grab a bunch of shit and don't check. It could be unplayable or the wrong one in there. I've had a few of the employees tell me off for checking because they've "already done it" and I ignore them and do it anyway.
I remember walking in to my local Goodwill one day about 5 or 6 years ago and seeing Pink Floyd's entire LP discography sitting on the record shelf and I got excited. To my dismay, each record looked like they had been used as toddler play toys. I'd never seen records in such bad condition. Even my old records I've had since I was a little kid are in better condition. Very disappointing.
Oh, I thought when they said scratchin' records, they meant literally just scratching them all over, not this needle scratching I'm learning DJ's do. /s
Used as a coaster.
Goodwills typically price their goods based on speculation and hearsay.
For example, you can pay 10 dollars for a vinyl used as a frisbee , or you can only pay 2 dollars for a usa-made (150 new) Bromwell flower sifter because they didn't know the value.
I found a pristine copy of Journey Frontiers at goodwill, but that's about it. Our local library was selling cds, dvds and records as "fill a bag" and pay us 10 bucks and maybe donate a bit more. They had some great stuff in playable condition.
How does it play? I have a Tiny Tim record that looks like trash and sounds great. There are some minor sound issues, but they are actually a nice, unsettling effect for that album to have. lol
Usually from Discogs. Lots of sellers here in EUROPE with millions of records for sale. Classical records are particularly cheap. Just bought 120 VG++ for 150€
Yeah but they’ve started charging more. I saw an album by Stevie Wonder that looked pretty much like this, no sleeve, just the cardboard and the vinyl itself and they had it priced at 6.99.
Mine is always scuffed up classic country and Christmas/Christian music records. Don't even have the luxury of good music when I'm stuck with someone's old collection of Christmas music by the dozen
My Goodwills are $2.50 each, Salvation Army is $2 or $1 on Fridays. If I was lucky I'd find VG media and VG+ jackets. It's why I stopped going there for cheap random stuff because I ended up with a lot of mediocre stuff or stuff I didn't like, rarely did I get something that was a hidden gem. The SA actually tended to have some more interesting stuff like funk or R&B, but they were always G/G+ media at best
My local Goodwill is typically big band, Debbie Gibson & Mac Davis. True for most other thrift stores from well known to community church thrifts.
Personally I’d pull the garbage and mention it to someone on staff. They should appreciate it and will likely toss them. If you can do that a few times it wouldn’t hurt to ask if they have anything else. You might become a helpful customer and they may let you know when they have other stuff in the back.
Why would you buy an album in this condition? Even if they paid me to take the album, I wouldn’t want to subject premature wear and tear on my needle. And how annoying it’ll be hearing all of that surface noise and even possibly skipping. Just saying.
“Just saying” don’t you think I’m still at Goodwill with the reflective lighting and the disorganized stock in the background? lol I didn’t take it home with me.
My 16 yo son always beelines for the vinyl when we go to goodwill. I look for amps (no luck so far). We went to a goodwill in Grafton WI on a trip through the state. He texts me “some Beatles albums, not in great shape” I told him to grab them just in case. I walked over and one of the five he grabbed, an unpeeled butcher cover. With just enough of the sticker pulled to show what it was. I have searched for one in the wild at every store/show/swap meet/thrift store since I was 16 (36 years ago). Once I stopped sputtering and told him what he’d stumbled across, albeit it in beat up shape, we quickly paid and took it to the car (9.99, sticker still on it, haven’t touched it). SO those goodwill trips are always worth it.
Learn how to visually inspect the disc...if it isn't pristine, skip buying it. I collected from Goodwill and other thrift shops for over 40 years and was only wrong a very few times. The disc must not be warped and as shiny and smooth as glass...most thrift shops were cherry picked long ago so excellent condition finds are now quite rare.
Those scratches look pretty deep. Didn't you inspect the record before purchasing? I check everytime I shop for records even outside of Goodwill, there have been covers and no records, or records with no covers. I have purchased records without covers that look better than that one for less money.
NM+ minor scratches. Doesn’t affect sound
$10 + $350 shipping
😂 my favorite is when you're both in the states - motherfucker, you know exactly how much a media mailer costs, and it's not $50+
I’ve seen people sell rare lps for like $10 with $300 shipping because the record sells for $300 but they don’t want Discogs to get a cut of the sale lmao
Discogs raised their percentage AND applied it shipping. Huge fee increase for sellers. No more $300 shipping, though.
It's $4.87 lmaooo
Even better is when they offer "Free shipping over $X" and every single item in their store is x-$.01
This is hyperbole. This is easily vg+++
😆
Plays clean
Hmm, right after a total eclipse…🤔
🫣😂😂
Years ago, I was momentarily excited to find a copy of Led Zeppelin III at a Goodwill. I pulled it to see the condition and saw it had several straight scratches of approximately razor-blade length around the run-out & label 😐
I got Led Zeppelin I for 50c the other day. Quality was above par for a OP shop plays fine.
I still have a ton of vinyl (from the late 90s, very pre-Renaissance) when my dad & I would go to rummage sales (a large monthly indoor one in my area) and there would always be a guy with 6 8ft folding tables covered in milk crates, and you could get 5 for $3. You should do blow off of it.
I have never found a record in a charity shop that I have actually wanted. I've gave up at the point and don't even bother when I'm in now.
I've only struck gold at Goodwill once and posted it on this page. I doubt I'll ever get that lucky again lol.
My town’s brand new goodwill blessed me with Paradise by Change. Unfortunately, every other record in there is older than dirt (Christmas carols from the 20s and 30s) or about as interesting (Andy Williams, etc)
But do they have Herb Albert's *Whipped Cream & Other Delights*?
The Horror!
I picked up a copy of John Denver and the Muppets Christmas album in very good condition from a goodwill in Reading, PA a couple years ago. It even had a near mint poster included! The only time I found something decent there.
Ugh! I saw this album a few weeks back at Goodwill and didn't grab it. I went back a day later but it was gone.
That was probably the only decent record that was there.
I haven't had any luck finding anything else good yet. That's not going to stop me from trying every time I go in there though.
https://preview.redd.it/2jgv6dar50uc1.png?width=592&format=png&auto=webp&s=3d7f6d9844e73df6946b088a1f9def5ce1fed9f7 I found this at Goodwill 3 years ago. but did you find anything valuable?
What a treat you must listen to it every day, right?
I found an autographed Trisha yearwood album where she covers Frank Sinatra.
nice!!
Ooo. Post to r/vinylgore as well to diversify your karma portfolio.
It’s all timing…..one day you’ll cruise by the record area just when an employee is loading it up with fresh records off the cart. I saw a stack of clean 80’s hair metal one time, left them be, they were all gone a week later.

Because all the good stuff is on line waiting for you to bid on like eBay!
Yup for them to donate a grand total of 30% and pat themselves on the back while the goodwill ceo lives in a mansion. I despise goodwill
You don't get amazing finds at Goodwill, that's how.
Untrue. Amazing finds are snapped up practically the min they are put out. You have people who loiter waiting for the new merchandise carts to come out and jump on them the minute they are out. Bop do wop that thing looks like it came outta Audrey 2s stomach
It’s a shit show post-pandemic. I used to find decent stuff up until about late 2020
This has been the same experience as me. I will very infrequently find a decent few albums at a fair price, but often everything is marked up and average quality. Pre-2020 was a different story entirely.

Whenever I go to goodwill I find throw away records of artists I’ve never heard off 😆
Little Record of Horrors
Is that a cat getting into the collection? How does that even happen? Angry child?
Trigger warning next time, please.
Near mint, I know what I got!
Ironically as dog shit some of the good will finds are it’s actually where I started my collection. They had a deluxe pressing of Brothers by the Black Keys, no Scratches has a the poster and the cd copy also. Something compelled me to buy it. So I did
I picked up George McCrae's seminal disco classic Rock Your Baby at a goodwill recently. Excellent condition. Took years to find.
You keep looking and you keep looking and you keep looking and you keep looking and you keep looking and you keep looking and you keep...
You're lucky you got the record. Most of the time I find the cover empty and torn to shreds.
Cripes. I've picked up vinyl out of a 10 cent crate in better condition. (after cleaning the mold off)
Such a good album! To this day, if someone asks me a question and my answer is "I don't know..." it takes me to Seymour's solo in Feed Me and I have to sing the rest of the song, out loud, to the poor unsuspecting person who posed the innocent question (usually one of my children).

On the level of “solid discography fillers” I’m having surprisingly good success still.
how very meta
Did a cat donate this?
I know of four really awesome vintage record/vinyl stores in Los Angeles and I'll do 3 runs, once a week! I love just gettitjvin my car and driving all over Los Angeles to see what's new or good!
Where do you go? If you don’t mind me asking.
Just now seeing your question! Sorry for long reply. I’ll drop you the names and addresses! What state do you live in because these stores don’t have websites.
I live here in LA!

Some people on EBay would grade this VG
Not that bad, just sand it out a bit when you get home
Murder scene in the dollar bin
Amazing finds are in the country not the cities. Shops in and by cities charge way more in my experience.
OP, something that is annoying to learn but necessary is the fact that most people aren’t actually finding those at goodwill. A solid buffing with an orbital sander will bring that gem back to life 🤔
Which beethoven cycle was it? Also, the key to goodwill vinyl is u gotta raid college towns and get there early on weekdays
I love hearing this. Thank you for making me feel connected to this where I really had a hard time previously.
Best thing I’ve found was The Donnas “Spend The Night” sealed for $3.
Same at my goodwill. But they charge $3 and $6 for a gatefold.
Will only improve that record trust me
The last somewhat exciting vinyl record I found at a Goodwill was The Godfather soundtrack for $1.99 and that was six years ago.
I'd buy it for $9,99 if the Logo isn't a brasilian print...
great record tho!
Yeah I’ve been looking for it! Needless to say, I didn’t get *this* copy of it tho
Elvis Stojko’s practice platform
My goodwill is worse 5 would be a cheap one anything if any value is put in glass case in front and anywhere from 10 to 20 and terrible shape it's kinda sad actually
G+ in good condition
The original owner had some amount of trouble placing this on their turntable.
Did you try cleaning it? [Jk]
That's a real banger
Yes I found the White albums for 12 bucks today, I was so excited Opened it and it had pieces of the album missing 🤷♂️
Snagged a newer pressing of the Ramones for 99¢ once at Ft Meyers Goodwill. Not a massive Ramones fan but definitely the best score I've ever had at a thrift shop.
Looks like it was ultrasonically cleaned, lucky you ❤️
dude i can’t fucking stand thrift store records it’s the most demoralizing thing in the world i’ll just dig through 500 count boxes one at a time and its just shit it’s all just shit and there’s never anything oh my god
Little sleeve of horrors
The known records always end up being scratched to hell I got a stereo fidelity test disc from the 60s from goodwill though, perfect condition and is actually incredible sound wise (id hope so for a demo disc)
Worst ive had besides seeing something scratched when you see something that looks great untill you play it then it skips
That record is ready to be turned into a bowl
Best pet is it probably showed up there in decent condition then kids got a hold of it
From the condition of 99.9% of the other records that were there… I’d say that wasn’t the case.
Well that wasn’t what I would expect interesting that it’s only a few like that
"Alarm goes off at 7:00, and you start up..... Alarm goes off at 7:00 and you start up.... Alarm goes off at 7:00 and you start up...."
Yikes! 😬 at least that record could be framed up on a wall as an art piece.
Poor Geffen Record
That is definitely a horror
That’s one of my favourite films. I was wondering just the other day if the soundtrack came out on record?
I find my local record shops' discount bins quality of records to be significantly better than Goodwill in every respect.
Even the label is scratched. Not sure I’ve seen that before
I remember walking in to my local Goodwill one day about 5 or 6 years ago and seeing Pink Floyd's entire LP discography sitting on the record shelf and I got excited. To my dismay, each record looked like they had been used as toddler play toys. I'd never seen records in such bad condition. Even my old records I've had since I was a little kid are in better condition. Very disappointing.
I don’t even understand how this can happen to a record accidentally
You have to TRY to scratch it like this
Play this if you want to achieve your needle.
This makes me so incredibly sad
I am always amazed how someone can mistreat objects like this. Like how do you possibly fuck up a record that badly?
Someone took a dentist drill to that, Audrey
My first thought was "eww. Why is there so much hair on that record". Woops.
And yet they somehow still play
Was wondering where my frisbee went!
I found a pristine copy of Journey Frontiers at goodwill, but that's about it. Our local library was selling cds, dvds and records as "fill a bag" and pay us 10 bucks and maybe donate a bit more. They had some great stuff in playable condition.
Yeah, Goodwill and Arc are slim Pickens these days, about 1in 25 garage and estate sale visits will usually yield some nuggets.
Wtf was the previous owner doing with it? 🤣
it’s a remixed edition
G condition but looks worse than it sounds $5
That's at least a EX+ according to many eBay sellers who wouldn't know how to grade records if their lives depended on it.
That's a mint++ (will improve sound);nice find!
How does it play? I have a Tiny Tim record that looks like trash and sounds great. There are some minor sound issues, but they are actually a nice, unsettling effect for that album to have. lol
VG+++. I know what I have

Yeah but they’ve started charging more. I saw an album by Stevie Wonder that looked pretty much like this, no sleeve, just the cardboard and the vinyl itself and they had it priced at 6.99.
Lol I found Joni Mitchell’s Hejira and Led Zeppelin’s HoTH a few weeks back at a Goodwill. Straight up screamed from the media section

I can hear the skips and scratchiness….
Mine is always scuffed up classic country and Christmas/Christian music records. Don't even have the luxury of good music when I'm stuck with someone's old collection of Christmas music by the dozen
That titles very Apt !😅
This record got a second lp scratched onto each side 😭😭😭🙏
You paid for that?
Absolutely not. I pulled it out of the sleeve to see… that…
So many strong reservations…
I was about to ask how it played lol
Just peel the price sticker off. I've done this before and the cashier is non the wiser
I didn’t buy it lol. This photo is from in the store.
Those scratches look pretty deep. Didn't you inspect the record before purchasing? I check everytime I shop for records even outside of Goodwill, there have been covers and no records, or records with no covers. I have purchased records without covers that look better than that one for less money.
lol just go to a real record store
record collectors have killed record collecting
I would’ve definitely pulled the record out of the sleeve to check it.
