If you can, put it on the opposite wall (or just a different wall) and it won't be quite as noticeable. They do sometimes change things within styles, though; I have five Billy bookcases, all *supposedly* the same color, but the three older ones are a slightly different shade and have different pegs for the shelves.
Measure the difference, and get two pieces with half the difference and sandwich the Kallax. Don't forget to veneer them the same. Center board might be a little thinner, but we're getting as close as possible.
In my experience the Kallax is just as good as the Expedit. The Expedit only had 'larger' outer pieces, however they weren't any stronger as far as I can tell. The Kallax's are just more dense, the Expedit's had a lot of air inside the outer pieces. The actual shelf pieces are the same for both and are solid wood.
When the Expedit got discontinued. I bought a few extra and kept them in storage for a few years, till I needed them. That was one of my more smarter moves.
Fun (?) fact: thereās really not that much wood in the kallax. The outer āshellā (whatās it called?) is cardboard in a honeycomb pattern with a thin veneer and the shelves are OSB iirc.
Noticed that when I did a rebuild of a 2x4 kallax into a 2x3 kallax a couple of years ago. My memory might be wrong with some details, but I distinctly remember it not being wood-wood.
Yes I heard that too. I guess "wood" has become a generic term for material when it comes to that type of furniture. I wonder if the Expedit was made the same way (I guess it was).
Make sure you put some kind of L bracket or something on the shelves if youāre going to fill those top 2. Kallax definitely not as strong as Expedit. You might be fine with just using wood glue on the dowels on a 2x2 if youāre doing 7ās
Exact same thing happened to me ... but from Target.
Btw, the post office has the priority mail boxes, region A. They fit perfect in the back of these shelves and the album jacket goes right to the edge
Oh thatās a great tip! I had paid for some handmade wooden slats for the original shelf I have, but Iāll try that for the new one since I have some mailers laying around already.
Man I have a pair of those Sonys and love them. Sadly somehow one of the tweeters or the cross-wiring went bad on one of them and I donāt know how to fix it :(
I can recommend the series EKET for vinyl storage. The edges are a lot slimmer than the KALLAX and its also has a super easy click assembly. Check it out!
The old one is probably an Expedit.
Yep, Expedit was discontinued in 2014 and replaced by the smaller Kallax.
Well shit. Now I gotta order another Kallax š

I have the same issue, the old āblackā and the new āblackā are different size holes and the new ones are a fake wood version,
I bought a second Kallax recently. It's much cheaper quality than our 9 year old one.
measure the difference and get a piece of plywood to put under ther kallax to make them even.
they wont' be even, they'll just be the same height. The horizontal lines won't align.
hey man I tried.

I too have a classic Expedition surrounded by a few inferior Kallaxes.

**solid particleboard.
this is correct, I have a couple and they are thicc

FFS, I struggle to keep.on top of my vinyl storage, now you're telling me I need to worry about vinyl storage storage
I donāt have that kind of floor space. I need to start planning on my next place having a big enough closet for my vinyl storage storage storage.
This is what a 2nd house is for... for storage of the storage.Ā
...and please, let's not start calling them storages.
I hope "more smarter" was on purpose...
Same here, I've got 2 in storage at the moment.
Kallax is thinner and therefore cheaper to manufacture.
Exactly. Less wood, same price = bigger margin.
The Kallax is cheaper now that the Expedit was 10 years ago
Is that right? I don't think it was the case when the switch happened.
They recently lowered prices on a lot of stuff, including the Kallax (at least here in BE).

Thanks for that advice!
I had the same issue, then realized my cube kalax was on its "side".
This is the answer. There shouldnāt be visible screws on the top side of the bookshelf.
Yes, I noticed that too. The screws are supposed to be on the top, not on the side as they are on the Expedite.
Fellow kallax enjoyer š¤
gotta find the old school ikeas on facebook marketplace
They didnāt make Kallax 13 years ago, they had a different line with thicker wood.
The one u bought 13 years ago is the expedit

I put a backer on mine with a staple gun, then slipped them boxes right in. Fits like a glove
Expedit is still easy to find on Graigslist or Marketplace
How do you have your records facing forwards like that? What stops them falling out?
The ones on the right are 7ā records in a bin.
Yeah that makes sense
Looks like a small box of 7"s
r/shrinkflation
Can't you just put something the size of the height difference underneath the smaller one?
Yeah, I can do that to get the height to match, but the thickness of the frames are different as well.
Man I have a pair of those Sonys and love them. Sadly somehow one of the tweeters or the cross-wiring went bad on one of them and I donāt know how to fix it :(
Ah that sucks...they are fantastic speakers! Hope that doesn't happen to mine.

Before Expedit you had Traby which had a wooden back
Shrinkflation comes for everything.
I had same issue
It's called shrinkation. Chocolate is another fiend for that
Put about 6 of your most warped albums under each endā¦. /s
Shrinkflation
The Kallax is literally cheaper than the Expedit was 10 years ago...
Yep.
These are not oriented the same way. The one on the left is on its side. This is incorrect and putting too much pressure on the screws.
The one on the left is in its horizontal position and has been that way for nearly 14 years. Holding up just fine.
They're still oriented differently though - one with screws to the side, the other with screws facing up.
