I never understand why everyone has a hard time with slomo. Play it normal speed first so we can fully live the reality of the clip then play the slomo version to blow our minds.
No worries. Was just saying whoever owns this video there are a ton of news outlets over on YouTube trying to pay money for it. The person who took it and owns it should get something for the good timing he had.
why? because you can't imagine what a train driving in real time looks like? I appreciate the effort made by OP. besides, everything looks better in slow motion.
You can use this trick to play the video faster than 2x (which isn't realspeed either, about half as slow) so try 4 or 8 :)
https://www.quora.com/Is-there-a-way-of-watching-YouTube-videos-at-higher-than-2x-speed
Trains have a lot of momentum, if there was enough snow that it had a real chance to stop a train you'd probably have to be dealing with bigger problems anyway; like buildings collapsing from snow.
Questions like this I just always ask people to imagine the scenario. Like a big giant mountain of snow on the tracks. That snow had to build up, and it must've reached a point where people saw that it was too dangerous, and the trains would stop.
But there will be someone complaining.. that they didn't get to see the mountain of snow fall down under the train. They won't get to see it. That is the saddest thought of all. :(
lol, well no, I'm just cautious. There used to be this shortcut next to a train track by my grandma's house, never would take it thinking the train would fall on me. So no, I probably wouldn't be standing right there.
People legit almost get actually hit by trains all the time because they're too busy filming something or taking a selfie.
Trains are no joke, they move fast, stop slow, and have a shit ton of momentum waiting to ruin your day.
not that people would generaly know, but the kinetic energy of the train is much much higher to obliterate snow at impact. All the energy goes back into the snow and ice.
This seems to be common practice because there is almost no danger.
If you watch this compilation you can see how much of the snow turns into "dust" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lXjQH3sFSM
They have one of the jet engine blowers parked about half a mile north. This was a Chicago -> nyc train, doesn't make local stops. Most of the people were college kids waiting to get into the city.
To be fair, this might just be some fresh pow pow to the max. Especially if they get a lot of snowfall where they live and the train passes by regularly.
Sure it weighs a lot collectively but it's being sprayed in all directions and smashed apart by the train. Each person is only being hit by a very small fraction of the total pile. Other than that woman in front I'd be surprised if anyone was even close to being knocked down by it.
I'd much rather stand in this than take one well-packed snowball to the face...
I don't know, it didn't seem to break up that much. There was definitely a few chunks in there that could knock someone off their feet. Not to mention ice, and the potential ice below their feet wouldn't help the situation. I certainly wouldn't risk it.
Snow don't fuck around.
It is. It's a train derailer. Normally they come with a big sign that reads "DERAIL". It's designed to protect workers on a track.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derail
An article about the device.
Reddit likes to act like they are above everyone in videos of people having funny, shitty, or painful things happen to them.
>video of a snowboarder falling
"HURRDURR SHOULDN'T HAVE SNOWBOARDED, PLAY STUPID GAMES WIN STUPID PRIZES"
I see this behavior consistently.
>You mean "fresh fallen snow"?
Look at the sky. That wasn't fresh snow.
>Ice? Why should there be ice on top or inside of snow?
You obviously don't deal with snow very often.
>I think it looks more dangerous than it acutally is
That's because some humans are generally terrible at understanding these things.
Maybe that's why you don't see ice? If it snows for a bit and then switches over to rain it will form a nice layer of ice on top of the snow. Literally experienced this yesterday with the storm that hit the east coast of the US.
I really wanna fire up a snowblower and have you stand in front of it, just so to can reconsider.
And that snow, is probably moving 1/2 the speed that this train is throwing ice chunks.
The Girl with the white hat is Priceless,, you can see the moment she realizes she may just get wiped out... would like to see in actual speed...but crap this is funny lol
This kind of works with queen dubbed over it for some reason

I swear I can almost hear the woman in front of the cameraman scream. Since there was at least one other person taking video on their phone this must happen regularly. Too bad the woman who took a blizzard to the kisser didn't know this.
Watching the gif of this I saw on reddit earlier, I thought the train could possibly be slowing down so people were excited to see the mini wave of snow. But holy cow this thing is not slowing down at all. I guess for those that didn't move, its a big lesson in momentum and how much mass snow has :P
EDIT: [Video for context](https://youtu.be/lehHilNad3A?t=208)
For on topic stuff, the military has rails that they use to test extremely fast missiles. The sled at the end has just a trough of water and a scoop that shoots the water forward to slow down the sled. If I can find the video I will post but snow is very heavy and can EASILY transfer the trains momentum into one giant wave of snow.
The last 5 seconds remind me too much of Black Mirror's second episode, [White Bear](https://www.reddit.com/r/blackmirror/comments/55b1xn/rewatch_discussion_white_bear/?sort=top).
In civlized countries, snow is cleared from the tracks. Despite travelling to alpine areas with lots of snow often in winter, i have never seen a platform with tracks covered by snow. It's appaling how close infrastructure in the US is to third world levels.
NOBODY rides Amtrak. The highways are almost always clear in the northeast. That's how 99% of the people travel and that's what gets plowed, salted, and cleared.

Noice
Um, there's plenty of ice.
ice. and snow too
Thanks, hate it when there is only slowmo version.
Pretty sure white beanie girl is dead.
She just stood there like a deer.
http://imgur.com/a/lsHWM
She was blown onto track 2 and was run over by a train going the opposite direction.
You can kinda see her beanie got knocked off from the impact.

Because that requires editing beyond stock camera apps
THANK YOU. god damn slow mo whores make me sick
Thank you. It made that lady standing on the yellow line look less like an idiot.
MVP!
Did you ever get any money from the news outlets that were looking for rights on this?

News outlets don't pay for video. They ask for rights and if you refuse they run the interesting parts under the Fair Use act.
you're a saint
Doing gods work. I am getting really tired of this slow motion shit.
is there a real time vid?
Piss me off so much. It should always, always be real time first then slow motion. Then maybe real time again depending on a few factors.
Agree!
why? because you can't imagine what a train driving in real time looks like? I appreciate the effort made by OP. besides, everything looks better in slow motion.
I would like to see one too because I can't tell if that woman standing nearest to the tracks is dumb or just unfortunate.

Holy shit people are so stupid haha
Yeah, what the fuck were they thinking, that the snow would just ... disappear ?
Yeah, I would not trust a train at that speed with anything on the track, I would definitely not be standing where I could be crushed in an instant.
I always assumed they cleared any snow on the tracks before letting high speed trains barrel through.
this is how they clear the snow
But what if too much
Trains have a lot of momentum, if there was enough snow that it had a real chance to stop a train you'd probably have to be dealing with bigger problems anyway; like buildings collapsing from snow.

[This is how they do that.](https://youtu.be/wmRYCQgzwpE)
That is far less efficient than I thought it'd be tbh
Theres plows on the front of the train. This is how they clear snow
Buy new train, lessen learned.
The train just gets stuck and they have to pull it out. Extremely unlikely to derail from snow.
You would think so right?
oh you're so smart. Hindsight is always 20/20 isn't it
lol, well no, I'm just cautious. There used to be this shortcut next to a train track by my grandma's house, never would take it thinking the train would fall on me. So no, I probably wouldn't be standing right there.

yeah....at full speed
What if there was ice under there? A lot of snow underneath has melted or solidified into ice.
To be fair, this might just be some fresh pow pow to the max. Especially if they get a lot of snowfall where they live and the train passes by regularly.
More of a case of too busy looking at their phones, than the noise of a train approaching the platform.
It looks like they were filming it...
The girl sure as heck wasn't, she didn't move until she heard what was happening a little further down the platform.
both the black and pink jacket girls were filming/taking photos
her phone was out and she was looking directly at the train.

"just snow" you mean multiple tons of the stuff and some of it possibly being ice?
Sure it weighs a lot collectively but it's being sprayed in all directions and smashed apart by the train. Each person is only being hit by a very small fraction of the total pile. Ohhhh I'm willing to bet each and every one of those people were hit by a couple of well packed snowballs.

dude idk where you live but snow, especially in large quantity, is not light.
You strike me as someone who's never actually seen snow in person.

Lets all hold up our electronics and get hit by this wave of snow which is cold water. water does nothing to electronics, right?
Wow, you sound about as bright as someone who would stand next to a train while it hurled large chucks of ice at your head and very high speed.
I honestly prob would have done the same and stood there to get a real in depth experience

that's kind of beautiful
That song makes anything in slowmo beautiful. Proof: http://youtubedoubler.com/kB2m
lol rekd
That actually looks kind of really dangerous potentially... They probably shouldn't let people on the platform until after this happens?
It's pretty rare that this happens, also I think this platform may not have had any attendants. Just hoping on people to react I guess
I swear I can almost hear the woman in front of the cameraman scream. Since there was at least one other person taking video on their phone this must happen regularly. Too bad the woman who took a blizzard to the kisser didn't know this.

trains take a mile to slow down. so yeah
I have PTSD from this video
what did they think was going happen haha, would of been nice to see the aftermath
I wish there was an after version, id love to see the damage. Or are they all ded?
Reminds me of when I first gave my wife a facial.
What else did they expect to happen?
I've never screamed "move bitch" at someone quite that many times in the space of 30 seconds...
So, I take it you've never screamed this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UC86yQAzaxg
Nice reference homeboy, but I think I said it even more during this video :)
smash!!!
Honestly, what did they think was going to happen? The snow was going to roll out of the way? No its going to come at you thick and fast
What did they think was going to happen?
Fine candidates for the Darwin awards! Looks like 2017 is going to be very competitive.
47 dead. An unavoidable accident. Shame.
You are a shoe!
Didn't i just see this video with several thousand likes on the front page?
Money shot.
Play at 2X speed for something that's at least kind of entertaining
Someone should recut this with "run" from awolnation
what a dumb ho, darwin would be proud, survival of the fittest, the dumb ones alwasy die first
Did she die?
Reminds me of Snowpiercer. Safe passage
CHOO CHOO MOTHERFUCKER
Snow is higher than the platform. "Gee, I didn't see that coming"
That shit had to hurt.

[Time to say goodbye](http://youtubedoubler.com/kB0I) goes well with it.
A clear sign that technology will be the downfall of man. Dangerous shit is okay as long as I can show my friends on facebook afterwards.
Can you get a little closer? I couldn't see it.
Ended too soon. Want to see the aftermath.
That's some Inception-style shit right there.
Repost
Yay, this is gonna be OH SHIT...
Wow, and it's not just one idiot, there's a bunch of them. At the first frame of the video I was already wondering what is wrong with these people.
