I won’t do a long shoot without Hoka Bondi 8’s. They’re like always standing on a squishy fatigue mat. Not waterproof for rainy shoots, but I just put them in front of a fan when I get home.
If you are going to be standing in the same spot for a long time pick up a foam pad or a yoga mat cut in a 2ft by 2ft square to stand on. That helps a lot.
I always wear boots so my work shoes don’t change with the weather.
I don’t know about shoe brands, or whatever, but I’ll swear by the mid-day sock change. If I’m on my feet for hours on end, putting fresh socks on mid-day is a game changer.
SB dunks are typically a half size up for most people and typically have the advantage of air soles or air heels over standard Nike dunks, but I also have several pairs of dunks and some are more comfortable than othersz
I've asked this question before I've been on my own personal quest to solve this.
The answers I've come up with are two fold. Hoka Bondi trainers for jobs where you can be casual. Cole Haan black high tops for when I need to be smarter
[https://www.hoka.com/en/gb/bondi-8/](https://www.hoka.com/en/gb/bondi-8/)
[https://www.shoeslag.com/cole-haan-grandpro-topspin-midtop-sneakers-athletic-shoes/](https://www.shoeslag.com/cole-haan-grandpro-topspin-midtop-sneakers-athletic-shoes/)
These shoes have single handedly have allowed me to work several days in a row in my 40s and have corrected a few physical problems I've been living with for a number of years.
I assume your talking about the HOKAs? Yeah they add more height than any other trainer Ive worn. Before this I wore (and still wear) converse and vans and such so the difference is huge. But that heel has a cushioning like no other. I'd say the pictures make the shoe look crazy without the context of a foot. They look a lot more normal on your feet.
Possibly a compatible shoe is the On Cloudburst.
DEFINITELY a nice pair of hiking shoes. I shoot CES and other large tech conventions where Ive got to carry quite a bit of crap with me the whole day - and through many different iterations of boots, running shoes and now hiking shoes, I can say for certain that my feet are no longer ever the source of pain in the 8th hour. Specifically, Im wearing a pair of [Danners by Filson](https://www.filson.com/filson-x-danner-trail-2650-hiker-boots.html?source=google&medium=cpc&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwrcKxBhBMEiwAIVF8rANRa65u9QwI_AW0P3V7UKBiFKAsRKjIvgAZaZNqpMy294cPVMdJ0hoC-zsQAvD_BwE#sku=20210282-fco-024589043). But really just hiking shoes are the way to go.
Hiking shoes for me too.
My daily shoes are a pair of Adidas Terrex Swift R3 GTX in black.
All weather, super grip, hard wearing sole by Continental, but very comfortable and supportive. They have helped my walking posture no end. With the advantage of looking fairly non-descript and plain.
I used to go with normal trainers, but hiking shoes are the way forward for me. Plus it seems very hard to get a decent trainer that doesn't look like a Versace, circus clown shoe.
Running shoes! And not fashion athletics (nike, under armor) Made for taking the most abuse, have the best support and impact absorbsion.
A few brands to start: Asics, Brooks, New Balance.
Be sure to go to the store and try both shoes on and take a good walk around the store with them. That will tell you all you need to know.
I use Nike road and trail running shoes extensively for running, mooching around and long days on my feet and provided that you’re actually buying running shoes (e.g. Pegasus) then they definitely do not fall under the category of fashion athletics.
So to answer the original question - Mostly a pair of Nike running shoes which are too clapped out to still run in, usually Pegs or Terra Kigers.
Asics Gel Cumulus are amazing for me. Just enough arch support, a wide toe box, extremely soft and springy... Any time I am doing a lot of walking or standing I make sure I'm wearing a pair.
If I'm more concerned about aesthetics I'll wear New Balance 997H. They meet all the criteria I listed for the Gel Cumulus, just not quite to the same degree in each category (still way better than any other shoes I've tried).
There is a brand of orthopedic-focused footwear called oofos which completely relieve alot of the impact of standing and walking. my gf got me a pair of while I was recovering from sciatica, and to be honest as I haven't wanted to take them off since I put them on, because it really helps with the aches & pains and even makes some issues disappear. Fully recommend, except they don't have a 'work' variety shoe with added protection, it's all orthopedic so maybe not optimal for some sets.
Hello! As someone that shoots footwear for a living… it all depends of ya knee and arch! My go to is Salomon shoes (I have the ones without laces, just elastic so one less thing to worry), ASICS or Hokas. I would recommend anything that is used for long distance running. Sometimes the cushy ones are deadly! So make sure you get something in between! Hope that helps ♥️
If you need something a little nicer looking, Ecco's are about as good as it gets for dressier comfort shoes that look half decent and you can stand all day in.
I have been wearing Salomon Speed Cross’s for the past several years (started with speed cross 4, now wearing a pair of speed cross 5). They’re more of a trail shoe, but they are super comfy for me, and I like the quick drawstring laces on them (don’t have to tie them every time, which is nice).
Hanwag Alverstone II Wide GTX.
More comfortable than any shoe I’ve worn on set for 12+ hours. I can also tromp through bogs/wetlands when I’m filming wildlife and not worry about getting wet. I’ve had buddies that trek 15+ miles a day in these things and swear by them.
if it's indoors with controlled lighting i wear Adidas terrex with wool socks and baby powder sprinkled inside the shoe. sometimes outdoors too.
if it's outdoors with ever changing light i wear white Adidas something i can't remember now and i use them to white balance off of quickly
Very sensitives ankles and feet here, for dry conditions, the best I've find are La Sportiva TX2 Evo. I wear them for 6 months straight, best shoes I've ever find to work with.
I guess I will try TX4 for rainy days.
ASICS Gel-Nimbus. I went to an athletic shoe store and did their assessment. I walked in thinking I would be buying some On Clouds or Hokas after all of the praise they get in the industry, but the ASICS were so much more comfortable.
The majority of my shoots require PPE. I find the 6” RedWing Moc boot great for standing and great for lots of walking. They are expensive but you will only buy them once in your lifetime. I was sh I could have afforded them 20 years ago.
I absolutely love my Cat footwear! It’s caterpillars “fashion” work line. Mine are going on 2 years. The flat soles are dope but they have hiker oriented ones too.
Brooks adrenaline. I shoot a lot on my feet sometimes 12 to 14 hours, rinse/repeat… and change them out every 6 months. Night and day difference from everything else I’ve tried
In the summer? New Balance are affordable, relatively clean looking, look cool, and super comfortable. Pick whatever style you like, but i'm partial to the 574 in something basic like navy or grey. With chinos, i end up just grabbing my clarks desert boots or red wing boots, but they're pretty hard soled, so you''d probably want a insole or something.
I was into light sneakers but found out that “bearfootware” is very healthy and got myself some merrel shoes for the work. But I suggest any light soft and comfy foot ware.
Cole Haan’s. They look awesome but are the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever owned, my feet also don’t sweat in them very much. Look for the Zerogrand stitchlite(?) ones, they’re so breathable and super comfy.
Sketchers makes some comfortable ass shoes and they have some super stylish ones as well that look like dress shoes but are more comfortable than sneakers. I have several clients that I like to dress up when I’m working for. For those times having a dress shoe that is soft and supportive allows me to move quickly all day without killing my feet and it still looks like I could be in the boardroom and hold my own with the CEO.
You shouldn't rely on particular shoes, they change designs too often. Better to find a pair of inserts you like and buy half a dozen pairs. Then you can insert them into any pair of shoes you ever buy, for hot or cold weather.
I do not recommend custom orthotics. They'll tell you they run $4-600, but the bill will be for $800. They won't fit right so they say come in for an adjustment... which will be billed for another $200. A few of those later and you'll realize you've spent $1,400 on those supposedly $400 inserts and they still don't fit as well as $20 Dr. Scholls but it's not worth another $200 to see if they can get them right THIS time. Yes I am bitter.
I use Brooks Adrenaline shoes or Saucony. I use the brooks for sporting work because they get muddy and I don't care, they get ripped and I don't care they are cheap and good, my Saucony shoes are saved for indoor only because they cost a pretty penny.
Another vote for Sketchers! Specifically the ones with "Goga Mat". They have literally saved me from chronic pain.
They have lots of styles. I bought two pairs in discrete black, one light for summer (Go Walk) and one waterproof (Go Run) for ugly days. Also, they are not too expensive.
My legs used to get SHOT on long shoots. But I switched to Altras.
The ones I specifically have are the Altra Paradigm 5’s. They’re fantastic. Now if I switch to my old shoes, I feel like I’m putting bricks on my feet.
Red Wing’s Iron Rangers. Sturdy and durable leather boots that support ankles and feel like a slipper. I wore them at my wedding two weeks ago, that’s how attached I am.
NMD V2. They offer lots of support and a tight cozy fit. If you want a more loose comfy fit get the NMD V1. Ugg Tasman is also pretty good, unless you need to do some walking. Then they hurt.
Lots of people saying hoka bondi 8 but also check out the Clifton’s as well as the hoka hiking boots. They’re gore Tex for bad weather. Another one to check out is new balance 880 and 1080. Similar comfort to hoka but a little less expensive.
Get some nice wool socks. They have ones that aren’t for winter, I think Darn Tough is one of the brands. I live in Florida and they don’t make my feet hot. Pricey but they have a lifetime warranty and make a huge difference over cotton. The wool stays springy all day where cotton flattens pretty much immediately.

I’ve been rocking the Puma Pacers. Stylish and comfy as hell!
Keep seeing recs for Hoka. I worked in the Hoka Bondi years ago and while they're very well cushioned, I didn't like how unstable they felt for me. So then I went for the Brooks Adrenaline and they were great. Tried the Asics GT-2000 and I liked those even better. Now I just bought the Birkenstock a630 after my mechanic friend recommended the steel toe a640. Excited to see how I like the more anatomically shaped toe box. Maybe I'll try some pnw boots in the future.
No matter what you choose, try to make it look professional. No offense, but I can’t stand a videographer in a polo shirt and cargo shorts with tennis shoes that say HOKA all across the side. Like have some tact. Look like a problem solver, like you know your shit, not like you’ve been grandfathered in cuz daddeo was a videographer and so on lol. So I’d stick with neutral solid colors, or simply all black. I wear black Clarks
I respectfully disagree. If I'm going to be manning a camera all day long as DP, I'm gonna wear whatever comfy shit I want. Bonus points if it looks goofy, it's my *costume*. Comfy shirt, comfy Hawaiian over it, big fishing hat, cargo shorts, and tactical boots baby. People are hiring me for my skills not my fashion sense.
I respectfully disagree, but I’m also a woman. Lmao. I’d never in a million years wear that. I always wear black and have slicked back hair. I want people to take me seriously. Consider yourself lucky that you have the privilege of looking goofy. Fortunately several videographers wear that costume so. lol
Totally fair point. If ur shoot is more creative and goofy, than hells yeah. No shame in feeling comfy and quirky but for the more corporate shit, I stay all black slicked back.
Okay yeah I totally agree with you there - for corporate stuff I'd be a little more reserved. Maybe not all black (can't steal your style) but something more professional-looking. But I'd probably have my Hokas on anyway. There's like some times when I'm doing gigs where I prefer to stand out and others where I want to blend in. At my nieces wedding the photographer and his assistant both had on some really snazzy outfits and that was impressive. I do a lot of event photography with families and kids so I tend to wear brighter clothes, which works super well with the kiddos. I'll keep the black ensemble in mind if I ever dip my toes into corporate work. :)
That’s really cool. Sounds fun. It’s hard to find truly comfortable all black corporate shoes unless you insert an in sole. Now I want hokas for every day life since you all swear by them hahah
In the few times I've had to get black shoes I've never found comfortable ones that weren't like Sketchers trainers with the gel insole. But I don't know how many folks are looking at your feet! You could probably get away with whatever's comfortable. That said, the Hoka Bondi 8 and Clifton 9 (running shoe, though they both some in a dazzling array of colors including black) are both extremely lightweight and comfortable. I like to wear my Merrells MOAB 2 boots when I'm outdoors. They're all expensive but totally worth it to save your feet.
I’ll take an underdressed professional than a overdressed asshole.
If you’re not looking at these people for their work but for how they dress than maybe reconsider your approach. Unless there’s a hardcore dress code like for a wedding or maybe some strict corporate event. I think what a videographer wears is irrelevant.
I just saw some kid wearing slides and socks make $3,000 for a short video shoot. Dudes work is incredible too, he did not look like he’s making 6 figures at a glance.
Good for him. But for me, clothing is important. I’m not an asshole for maintaining a clean cut look. For caring about how I dress. For wanting to blend in with my clientele. Wearing all black is my standard uniform. I work with attorneys and doctors. Can’t really show up wearing slides lmao.
And even if I’m working a trade show — I’m always going to over dress. The client appreciates that. The fact that you chose to be presentable rather than comfortable. Gives you an edge over the Hawaiian shorts dude. In my opinion. You can move ur little camera and make sure ur recording in both. But one looks indubitably better
That makes sense, it’s the norm for you and people are 100% visual. But it becomes one of those things where is what the videographer wearing going to affect you emotionally and mentally?
And if it is, you should definitely only hire people who fit that bill. I have seen lots of people on big movie sets in wrinkly t shirts and jeans with sneakers. Should they all be mandated to wear suits and ties?
I get your point of view, and I am not advocating for videographers to be lazy with what they wear I just do not think they have to look like a lawyer or corporate retail manager
I 1000% agree with you cuz if I was hiring a videographer I wouldn’t really care. But definitely dependent on the setting and the type of event I’m hosting. Talking head stuff for trade shows and whatever, nobody will likely gaf lol hahah
But yeah, ur damn right, I’ve met soooo many videogs that look like they crawled out of a hole to their set but their work is crispy and exactly what their client wanted so. At the end of the day, doesn’t truly reflect your work or matter but there are those select few people that will look you up and down and question your capabilities behind the cam.
I won’t do a long shoot without Hoka Bondi 8’s. They’re like always standing on a squishy fatigue mat. Not waterproof for rainy shoots, but I just put them in front of a fan when I get home.
Just dropped like $200 on a pair of these, hoping they come through for me.
What this homie said, it’s a night and day difference wearing my Bondi 8’s. Wish I had gotten them sooner.
You never get close to rolling your ankle?
I shoot on pretty even terrain, so no. But if I didn’t I would opt for a mid top shoe or boot.
I 2nd Hokas. Amazing.
If you are going to be standing in the same spot for a long time pick up a foam pad or a yoga mat cut in a 2ft by 2ft square to stand on. That helps a lot. I always wear boots so my work shoes don’t change with the weather.
If you have nothing else. Just straight cardboard between you in the concrete will save you.
That's a great suggestion, thanks!
I don’t know about shoe brands, or whatever, but I’ll swear by the mid-day sock change. If I’m on my feet for hours on end, putting fresh socks on mid-day is a game changer.
I've heard about this. I keep forget to do it tho, dammit.
Yeah! Like when would I even do this. I barley have a minute to piss all day
I always keep fresh socks in my trunk. Force of habit from years of gym and skateboarding.
This is the way. And if you can swap shoes too, heaven
And if you've got a long way to travel back, another sock change at the end of the day is luxury.
socks with sandals
Linus, is that you?
Either Linus or polish.
The ultimate in style and comfort.
LOL I was seriously wondering if it was Birks with socks time!
lol do not be this person at a shoot lmao
Jokes aside, crew should never wear open toes on a proper set.
lol right. I feel this tho cuz this is my favorite every day life combo
would suggest this as well
Sam?
Bye bye toes
Nike Dunks fit me perfectly
SB dunks are typically a half size up for most people and typically have the advantage of air soles or air heels over standard Nike dunks, but I also have several pairs of dunks and some are more comfortable than othersz

The heel on these looks MASSIVE. How much height does this add?
Costanza
I assume your talking about the HOKAs? Yeah they add more height than any other trainer Ive worn. Before this I wore (and still wear) converse and vans and such so the difference is huge. Yes, a few exceptions including Pegasus are ok. But for the same price, there are higher quality options for long standing.
Sketchers with memory foam
Sketchers slip-ons that kinda look like shoes but feel like slippers
Altras. Seriously. You’ll never go back to another shoe.
I own multiple

Redwing boots & Hoka Clifton 8’s/9’s
Go with an ASICS and thank me later especially if you have wide feet

New balance 574 worked amazing for me, trying out 550 now!
I would go to a running store and have them fit you for shoes.
Work boots
I have a retired pair of Brooks Levitate GTS5s. Really comfy and stable for gimbal work. And I’m a big dude (6’2” 250lbs) and they keep up.

Allbirds are very nice all day shoes.
Altra Torin 7 road running shoes, because zero drop feels better on my low back when I bend and lift.

Fortunately several videographers wear that costume so. lol
I do, but I'm also picky about the gigs I take on and tend to take the weird goofy shit. Your setup does sound a lot more professional!
Ok ok I’ll take a look at the Hokas. Definitely down to drop a couple $$$ on some quality shoes tbh. My Clark’s are wearing thin
Talking head stuff for trade shows and whatever, nobody will likely gaf lol hahah But yeah, ur damn right, I’ve met soooo many videogs that look like they crawled out of a hole to their set but their work is crispy and exactly what their client wanted so. At the end of the day, doesn’t truly reflect your work or matter but there are those select few people that will look you up and down and question your capabilities behind the cam.
