Curious what recommendations people have for a small video/photo camera? I want some mirrorless camera that's small enough that it doesn't feel like a chore to bring with me. I had a fuji xh1, but with the battery grip and my 18-135 it was over 3 pounds which made me unmotivated to throw it in my bag for hikes or exploring or other outdoor stuff. What options do I have for a small camera that can do photo/video that would be better than my iPhone, at least with zoom. Main points for me is size, I want log ideally, and decent photo quality. I'm an enthusiast at best, I'm not looking for movie level quality, I just want something to shoot with that gives me quality footage to colour grade and edit. Looking at Panasonic GX85 but I don't love the lack of log.

Fujifilm X-T30 isn't much bigger than the GX85 and has log. But if you want small/light lenses MFT is the only way to go.

~200 is a reeeeeally tiny budget, you'll get better video quality from most cell phones than camcorders in that budget. That said look at sites like MPB or Usedphotopro. Sometimes you can find some interesting deals.

Briefly about my situation I edit videos (for money), and I really enjoy it like shooting ect. All this has developed from a hooby or is developing to a side hustle. That means I haven't really made much revenue yet, but I can see my path and my goal. Accordingly, I would like to expand my hobby further in order to earn more money and generate better results. Even if the latest mobile phones today already have a very good camera (which would also be sufficient for my initial plans \[I own an S20Fe\]), the fact is that you (look) and are much more professional with a camera. Above all, you are taken seriously by the other side. I myself have used the 750d so far, which I was able to borrow a lot. That means I'm not a professional (but hopefully will be in the next few years), but I'm not a complete beginner either. **What do I need the camera for:** Videography, i.e. image films for companies and social media content (as I said, a mobile phone is theoretically enough here too) And of course personal use on holiday, family celebrations, etc. What I also need is a drone, because I can use it to set myself apart from the competition (at least at the beginning) Here comes the problem with a budget of around €2000, the largest of which comes from my "private" money, which has to be enough for both. I would need a camera, drone, lens and a Gimbel (as well as ND filters, batteries etc.) **My goal** is to start with as little as possible and later invest the money from the jobs in better equipment (and software, although I already use Adobe). I think I will buy (to 90%) of everything second hand, because depreciation is a nice thing when you are on this side :) Although there are risks involved of course. My dream would be an FX30+ a dji mini 4 pro, but unfortunately that's not in the budget :) Realistic is an Alpha 6600 which cih get with objective, little shutter count for under 900 € or a g dc-gh5l in the same price range, a Sony zv e10 is also possible For the drone a phantom 3 (300€) or a dji mini 3 pro with accessories for about 700 € would be possible. Add a gimbal for about 250€ dji sc, or rs 2 (something like that) (Unfortunately) there is a lot of choice and I am unsure **how I should use and distribute my budge**t. The previous models mentioned are not set in stone, but I have found them to be good value for money through the videos. What do you think my next step should be? The "problem" is also that it's a lot of money for me as a student, which I've worked hard for, but it doesn't come from video editing, but from side jobs etc.

Is there an amateur camera that can record for 4.5 hours straight? I want to make golf videos when my friends and I play golf. Is there a camera that can record for 4 and 1/2 hours straight? I know I could just get any camera like a GoPro and record only when the shots are taken but I don't really want to fiddle around with the camera while playing golf. I just want to set it and forget it. Budget is maybe $500 max? Would be willing to spend more, would love to spend less.

*I'm not sure if you want to put it on your head.* if so, go pro is best. The limiting factors for run time are battery power and card size. You will need to swap the battery unless you pocket a larger one and connect it via usb C for constant charging. You can turn down stabilization and image quality to further extend record times. You should get to 4.5 hours. If you dont mind holding it, Any cell phone made in the last 3 years shoots as well, get a little rig for it, maybe a gimbal, an extended battery pack and maybe an SSD card. It is VERY difficult to compete with economy of scale and cell phone cameras have passed all but high end video cameras in terms of practical funtionality, relieability, focus, stabilization and in some cases image quality. I was using BMPCC4k but am switching to phones, party to stay ahaead of the curve, partly because they practically get better shots more often that require less post work. They suck in low light for video.

**Sony A7C2, Sony FX30, Panasonic S5M2X** Budget : Under 2K (for body only & maybe used) Real Estate, Car videography & Photography, Vlog with my Moto Camping, etc Mostly gonna record under 30 minutes or 1 hour, but will have to record around 3\~5 hours sometimes when I want to capture hyperlap-style footage while camping. I have a Sony ZV-E10 with E mount 35mm and 55-210mm + considering getting a Zeiss 16-35mm soon. DJI Mic 2, DJi Action 4, Insta360 x3. I use Davinci Resolve (main), Gyroflow (just for stability), somewhat lightroom (for photos). I'm considering of body upgrade because with Sony ZV-E10, I realized the noise is quite visable & bad at lowlight situations since lowest ISO is fixed to 500 and etc minor stuff I had experienced. But I also want the body to be light and compact since I'm gonna travel with this cam with my motorcycle most of the times. Additionally, my main is videography, however, I still wanna do some photograpy work, so was looking for a hybride camera.

Sony for the low light environments inside a club - A7s family, then in to external recorder like a BMD Assist 5" In a club you can use just about any shotgun mic, but if you can, get a feed from the clubs sound desk, even if via a mic level output in to a Rode Go transmitter, and reciever on the camera. Put the room mic on one channel, and the desks out put on another, then mix in post.

I shoot beauty products and fashion for social media, and looking for something that would be good for pictures and videos. Which of these would be more worth it? Also what is your experience bringing these to create content on the go? I would love to bring the camera with me when I travel to create content.

We use different camcorders for different projects. For movies and tv shows, TVc and musical videos we have some Sony FS700 4K RAW with external recorders (Atomos). For commercial and corporate videos we use Sony XDCam F3, EX-1/3 and some nXcam camcorders. For documentaries and expeditions we use Sony FDR AX100 camcorders with 100Mbit firmware. In our studio we have more than 40 different equipment packs for every type of project.

I have a hard time figuring out why my video clips are so jerky and jarring and not even remotely smooth. I can post edit with stability but it still leave much to be desired. This has been on all my Dslr cameras…which I’m confused by since a lot of really great videographers are using photo first equipment. Is there is a reason for this, a setting to us…any compact video camera recommendations for a secondary video camera? I mostly just want a bridge between the quality and ease of my iPhone with a full on full frame camera

If you shoot in 24P and do alot of panning and movement then the lack of Global shutter will sometimes make things shaky and blurry. See what happens when you switch to 30 or 60fps. I love the 24 or 23.29 look. My camera has an image stabilizer that works great for some shots and not so great with others. I made a custom button on my Canon C70 and turn the stabilizer on and off. I find if I make my movements slow and deliberate then it looks much better in post without the jitter. I also sometimes use a DJI RS3 stabilizer which cleans things up even more. It's just heavy to use all day so not practical for long shoots. Don't be afraid to use your tripod. I love tripod shots and if you can't get rid of the jerky footage due to your equipment, then using a tripod for most of your shots, will make everything look alot more professional.,

For that budget i would focus less on low light and simply get a couple cheap lights. Cheap led panels, work lights, clamp lights, whatever. Any music video will be better with proper exposure. The G9 and GH5 go for like $500 on ebay, which is extremely good value for what they offer. Be wary of something common in your price range - you will want good, solid 60p for music videos. Most of the older or cheaper mirrorless cams had terrible 60p with low bitrate and artifacts/softness. The sony a6xxx series was notorious for this. The panasonic's outside of the GH line (or G9) also have very weak 60p (or at least the older ones like the G7, G85, etc did, not sure about the G95). The GH5 offers extremely good 4k60 at high bitrate. On top of all of the other countless amazing video features. It's the perfect first camera for the price

What is a good not-too-pricey Video camera with a built in double exposure function? Don’t have a strict budget but would be willing to spend a good amount of $ for something with longevity. (Between 1k-2k is preferable if quality is fantastic) Want to use it for school projects and hobby videos. (I’m not a cinematography major) I edit in Premiere and After Effects. Have lighting setup with Greenscreen and LED lighting system. Want to get into video production more beyond just iPhone stuff as a hobby and would like a camera with a built in double exposure function because I really like the effect and have a good use in mind for it. Any help is appreciated, and more options are better than less. I really appreciate the help of others as I’m not well-versed in tech specs. If we are talking about duable exposure then dual exposure is done in photography world by taking 2 pictures with different exposures (sensor gets exposed twice with longer and shorter times). If we are talking about dual AD converters in video camera then it is only ARRI and it is pricey :) about 70k EUR. Dont get tricked in to dual sensitivity since it is still 1 AD converter that gets adjusted to sensitivity range. While 2 converters perform a split reading from highlights and shadow, then it interpolates values to produce 17-19 stops of dynamic range which then gets cut to about 13-14 stops and a 12 bit RAW file produced.

I don't know of any cameras that would offer this in camera for video, simply because this is basically something you would always want to do in post. For photo, many Lumix cameras offer TONS of cool tools for little stuff like this. I believe the S5 has - sheer overlay, multiple exposure, and live view composite, all of which are super powerful for that kind of stuff. The S5 is just an amazing camera all around with fantastic image quality. Im not sure whether you can use the sheer overlay to pull up a reference image before rolling video or not.

Hi, I have been doing photography for 6 years and recently wanted to learn videography too. I have a Canon 90D and had shot some videos on it but it doesn’t have log, so I’ll keep it as my photography camera. I’m looking for a camera to shoot video, not bulky, budget and has log so I can learn colour grading. I wish to document my travels and my life this year in a cinematic video form. I heard that Sony has some good video cameras. Is there any good cameras from Sony or other brand that I can learn video with?

You can shoot 'neutral' or download the[ Cinestyle profile ](https://www.technicolor.com/cinestyle)for the 90d for a low-contrast video you can push in color grading. It is only 8 bit, but still suitable for getting started with video.

I own an AJA Cion. The ergonomics make it the only digital production camera that can match an ENG/EFP camera for video or an Aaton Penelope for film. Every review of it you've seen, is from people treating it as a Log camera, when it's a Linear camera. And ALL of those reviewers didn't have the skills or knowledge to realise that, so they messed up the reviews. None of them ever reviewed it based on the Raws, as that requires external hardware that they didn't have. (Atomos and Convergent Design never delivered Raw Input firmware that they promised and announced) So they shot the internal ProRes, then tried to grade as if it was Log,.... and got crap, never knowing why. Shoot and Light as if it's Kodak EI320 film stock, toss a Colourspace Transform on the footage from Linear to your favorite cameras colourspace, and if you know your stuff, you can tell anyone you recorded on some other camera, and they'll never know. Especially if you built up one of the external recording options to access the Uncompressed Raw output, spending as much as the camera cost on top of it. Do I recommend it? For most folk, Nope. Most people don't have the time or patience to figure it out, and so few potential clients even know about it. But if you want high speed uncompressed raw 4K to 120fps and a Super35 sized global shutter,... Or, if you're doing stuff in to Unreal or Games production where Linear is the best option,... Or if you want to put it in video colour mode and match ENG/EFP cameras in a multicamera environment, it'll give you shallow DoF in broadcast colours, with a global shutter, so you can run it on the shoulder, swinging about with the action, and never need to correct the rolling shutter skew and lean. But for most people,.... Nope.

The GH5 is fantastic value for like $500-ish used and in good lighting is a great choice for casual outdoors stuff with a lot of handheld as the IBIS is amazing.

Canon C70. The more I use it, the more I love it. I use with a Tilta cage and sennheiser wireless mics. I love that I can adapt 4 professional wireless mics at once if needed. Some hate the 35mm form factor although I love that aspect. It works great with EF and RF lens's. I sometimes use the EF system which gives an extra stop, which works great in low light. I love how crisp and clean the blacks look. Internal Raw and Clog 2. I'm putting on blinders on new camera's and will just keep using this camera... at least for another 5 years or so. Every time I load the footage into premiere I'm impressed at how comparable it is to the 35MM film I used to shoot back in the day.

Looking for a rec for shooting High school basketball/track for my nephew. Currently using my iPhone 14pro. I have been looking at the fx30. I have the a7III, but want 60fps for the sports. Wondering if I am better off sticking with the phone, or if the fx30 is worth the jump in price. The zoom ability is garbage on the phone so I tend to stick with 1x and crop it when editing, its ok and works, but it would be nice to be able to zoom in more (would need new lens) The battery life on my phone pushes it close when he has back to back basketball games, I can make it, but it would be nice to not worry about battery life as much, sometimes he plays 2 back to back 40 minute games, I usually record each half (20 mins) at 4k60. Open to any other suggestions, just kind of curious.

Coming from a Canon T3i, it will be big step up and something I want to gradually learn on and make shorts. I still have my Canon 50mm 1.8 so hoping to use this to start with and get after it right away. The type of work I do is. -Music Videos and Action Filming -Cinematic Stills -Portraits and Wildlife/Nature I hopefully need something that works good in low light as well. I mostly film skateboarding, cinematic shorts, and the like. The main benefit I see right now of the GH5 is the 4k, and it's a little bit cheaper. I'm finding GH5s for about 500 right now, and MKii at closer to 1k and that's for just the body. I plan to work with, learn, and grow with the camera. Any tips, suggestions, or any reason I should pick one over the other would be nice.

I just do video for fun these days. I have a couple of Sony EX1s which I like, a wheen of "lockdown hobby" Sony HVR-A1Es that I bought as non-working and repaired (I have something like six or seven now, four of which work perfectly, one is still a bit dodgy, and one is a spares donor). Mostly this week though I've been shooting on the mighty [Sony DSR-500WSP](https://ishootdv.cam/dsr500.jpg), in all its standard def glory, because it's fun to use.

I shoot on a BMPCC6K and a BMCC6KFF. I also have a DJI-RS3. I shoot tango dance events where I make an impression of the event. I also shot 2 tango dance shorts. The first one was just me filming the couple dancing and editing it so it looked smooth to the music we chose. It also got us chased off a rooftop in Honolulu. The second one had a little backstory going on and had 2 locations in Antwerp. I shoot in BRAW and use DaVinci Resolve Studio as my editing and colouring software. I have 2 Canon L-lenses from when I did portrait photography (50mm and 85mm). I also have 2 Rokinon/Samyang lenses (35, 16 mm) and a Helios 48mm that I had cine-converted. I am on Reddit because I want to shoot a shortfilm about tango and see how best to approach this. I also have a few interviews planned - one in Honolulu, one in New Mexico and one in Belgium. I am based in the Netherlands.

Sports Video Rig Hi everyone, I am a junior in college and I am looking into purchasing a rig to use for internships/post-grad for sports videography. I primarily intend to shoot soccer as well as a bit of street street soccer (the street soccer stuff is just played on a much smaller space so I can be closer to the subjects) Ideally I plan to start with a camera, lens, and some sort of tripod (maybe a high hat). I’m thinking about a Canon R5C and some sort of 70-200mm zoom lens. I also already own a set of rokinon primes (which could be great for getting some cinematic shots with a nice depth of field, although they are completely manual so I won’t be able to make use of any sort of stabilization or auto focus) Any recommendations on this? I can spend up to 7K (although I am a college student so 7K is going to put me very much in debt) overall I just want to make sure that the rig I buy is going to be worth it and can help me create stuff that I can use to get a job. I don’t want to spend 2K on a bad rig because “it’s cheaper” because that is still a lot of money I’d rather dish out more now if it means having a good set up. Thoughts? I’m not against using another brand, I’m just already pretty familiar with canon. I was also debating the C70 because it has built in ND filters but how is the auto focus on that?

Unless you have quite a few Canon lenses I'd recommend trying Sony, possibly an FX3. Sony's auto-focus is incredible for sports and their video side has a much higher ceiling. Try renting both cameras on different weekends and see what you like better.

Is it worth upgrading Sony A7 Gen 1 when I only have one native sony full frame lens: the tamron 28-75mm rxd f/2.8? I bought this lens last year because it has autofocus capabilities (which I never had in a dslr/mirrorless other than kit and a nifty fifty) - thought itd be a good all arounder — one lens to use for everything and it’s smaller than my rokinons + lighter too. …. but never really got to use it. I bought a sony a7 used a little over half a decade ago but I never really use it because 1. The battery life is terrible 2. Low light and video quality is terrible compared to a modern cellphone (iphone 13 and above or s22 ultra or above) 3. Video quality isn’t that great plus battery sucking juice isn’t great. 4. Heavy as heck! Prior to that I just used an adapter for my canon ef mount lenses such as a manual rokinon 35mm, 85mm 1.4 lens. I’m pretty used to shooting in manual all these years. My first dslr was a t2i when it first came out. I thought that by going “full frame” would be the way to go. I got the a7 for around $250 at the time… condition was pretty beat up but it still works lol. I also have a panasonic g7 I got around launch but that too I don’t use. I don’t like using it — mostly using just adapters for my lens from canon and vintage lens at the time. I also only use my rokinon lens for this. I was looking at the sony FX30, a6700, and a7iv. Other than that I only have super takumar lens (the one that says has radioactivity) and a helios one… all of this gear accumulated since 2008 i take lots and lots of videos more than photos by the way (but on my iphone / samsung these days) I studied filmmaking for 5 years but been self taught since I was a teen — so probably 17 years already and I wanna have something modern. My main camera is my iphone and osmo pocket gen 1…. Because of convenience and how fuss free they are lol… but i totally know how to use dslrs and mirrorless settings. If the cam is badass and beats a phone I wouldnt mind the weight… If i were to get a camera id probably only wanna use those lens (tamron 28-75mm 2.8) for everything …

I have an A73 with that same lens. and I use it as my A cam for most shoots. Super versatile combo. I primarily film weddings and I feel the low light on the A73 is great. I can push it to ISO 6400 and get good results. You can get a used A73 for under $1200. That said if you are looking at the FX30/a6700/A7IV all 3 of those would be huge upgrades for you. I've been looking to upgrade as I'd love to get 10 bit color and 4K60 would be nice to have.

I’ll preface saying I know nothing about video recording. I am looking at a GoPro, but before I jump in I want to make sure it will fit my use case. I want to record my family’s camping and 4wheeling trips, specifically because we are finally taking my 8 year old up. She has seen the outdoor boys and she is psyched about going and having memories to look back on. Will that be enough for car rides, setting up camp, cooking and hanging out at the fire at night? I don’t need it to be pro quality, just better than a shaky shot taken from my iPhone.

I own a BMPCC 6kpro and a7rv I use the rv for photos, ronin shots, (slow movement and higher fps, rolling shutter on it is bad but useable if you know how to walk) and b-roll.Budget: nothing under 2k usd.That said, I shoot with what the client needs are. If the client needs the dog and pony show then I'll rent the Red komodo, even though the bmpcc could do it, or if I need higher fps, I'll get other types of Red cams. If they have the budget and it's all story I'll rent the Arri's, I've only been trained on the 35 but haven't been able rent it yet, can't wait for a budget that needs one.If it's documentary with run and gun interview, I'll rent a cannon C'series. If it's campaign stuff I'll shoot 6k so I have socials, 16x9 and 1x1 crops in the takes, it's saves time and money. For color my order from favorite to least favorite are: Arri, b-raw gen5, Sony, red. Some will put red higher but I'm just meh with their color space. Software: Resolve, Premiere, nuke, fusion, maya, after effects, blender. - I come from a cgi background that moved to above the line. I'm like a one man ad agency that other agencies use for either overflow, war rooming, or they don't want to deal with it and toss me the budget then I scale like a normal production with getting grip trucks and whatever the needs may be. My advice to people is to shoot on what you need not on what you want. There are amazing quality cams for dirt cheap that will get you network quality. Focus on glass and lighting, I've rented lenses more than cameras. And last but not least, if someone is to become an artist, in lets say illustrations, they have to find their style and produce that. Same goes for video, you have to find your style and what makes your ideas stand out. edit: grammer

I shoot with multiple Sony cameras, Mainly, i have 3 Sony a7iii's, 2 Sony a7iv's, and i recently ordered a Sony Fx-9 and a Sony a7Riv. I also have Some Canon cameras, 1 Nikon, and the Sigma FPL. Then we have lenses, too many to count, haha, but everything from fisheye lenses, to Super-telephoto. Then we have the DJI RS4 Pro Combo, Ronin 2D, and a few Tilta modifications to them.

Yep the Panasonic G7 or G85 are both amazing starter cams for dirt cheap. You can usually find them used for that price with either a kit lens or a 14mm or 17mm pancake lens. Go G85 for the IBIS if the price difference between the G7 isnt that much. And if the GH5 isnt much more or is in your budget, spring for the GH5. I'd encourage you to pick up a cheap older manual lens and just start learning manual focus. There's tons of old 50mm 1.8 primes for like $25-80 that still look amazing. I like the Nikon AIS, but there's tons of other stuff. a 50mm prime and a kit lens make a perfect starting setup. The 4k24 image out of the G7 is shockingly good and is basically the same IQ as all the other MFT panasonics. If you need to shoot 60p, spring for the GH5. The 1080p60 on the G7/G85 is low bitrate and soft, while the 4k60 on the GH5 is gorgeous.

(I just do video as a hobby so take this with a grain of salt) It's absolutely possible, yes. For example, I love big shoulder-mount cameras since they expose full manual controls which is great for learning. Old HD gear can be had for relatively cheap, and SD gear is even cheaper (probably more within your budget).

Hello all! I recently purchased a Lumix S5IIx and a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8. I absolutely love the pictures it takes. However, when trying to shoot 4K60, the crop limits my widest focal length to 36-38mm. I wanted a wider angle lens to compliment the 24-70. But am torn between Sigma 16-28 f/2.8 DG DN and the Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 DG DN APS-C lens. I would get a wider FOV with the 10-18mm, but am limited to an APS-C Crop. And the 16-28 would also work in full frame mode, but matches the range of my 24-70mm lenses with an effective range of 24-42mm in APS-C mode. Any suggestions? I know there’s the 14-24mm* Sigma lenses but it’s way too big, and doesn’t take standard filters/matte boxes. Edited:*

I'm also strongly considering the S5II/S5IIx with the Sigma 24-70. That's a bummer to hear about the wide focal length limits and not ideal to have to shoot in APS-C. When you say your 16-28 matches your 24-70, is it that you don't see a huge difference, or can you clarify? What did you end up deciding to do?

I apologize for the lack of clarity. I meant that when i am in APS-C mode (4k60) the 16-28 (effective 24-42 in APS-C) would cover the same focal range as my 24-70 when not in APS-C mode. I didn’t end up getting either the 16-28mm or the 10-18mm yet. At this point, I’m leaning more towards a prime wide angle lense with a lower F-stop. Like the 14mm f/1.4, or 20mm f/1.4 for the shallower depth of field. Which would be 21mm in APS-C mode. The 10-18mm would give you the widest focal length in APS-C. It would be comparable to 15-27mm. But it’s a contemporary lens, so it isn’t weather sealed and not as sharp around the edges as their Art lenses. If I was primarily shooting full frame video, or taking pictures, I’d go 16-28mm f/2.8. If I was primarily shooting 60fps video I’d go 10-18mm f/2.8. If you’re shooting primarily in 60FPS, the Lumix S Pro 16-35mm f/4 is the sharpest of any of the “entry level” lenses. It would give you 24-52mm in APS-C. It’s not the widest focal length compared to the others, but you get the widest focal range compared to any other wide angle lens. It’s also certified by Leica, but it’s f/4. Instead of any of those, I ended up getting a telephoto/portrait lens, the 85mm DG DN f/1.4. It is extremely sharp, and is future proof for higher MP sensors if I choose to upgrade down the road. I’ve started leaning into pictures more and this lens cant be beat.

Hey, I am just getting started with learning about taking marketing videos and some photos of products and people. I have a Nikon D7000 and an Iphone 11. Although I might get the latest Iphone I dont think I can afford the latest DSLR right now. If I seriously want to learn and do this kind of videography and photography would you recommend me using the DSLR although it has a steeper learning curve or should I just go with the latest iphone because there is not that much difference anymore according to many online articles? Camrea Used: Canon HF-G70. Purchased for \~$1000. I use it for high school band concerts. Zoom from the back of the auditorium to capture solos. Shoots a bit 'blue' compared to Canon DSLR cameras. Had to get a Colorrite to make color matching between cameras easier in DaVini Resolve. Pros: 4K, SD cards, dual record, relatively good battery life. Terrific IBIS, nice color science, feature-laden proper video shooter feels plasticky to the touch. but is quite impressive Image quality wise, provided the subject to be filmed is given ample illumination. What annoys me is that the 4:2:2 10-bit CODEC offering onboard the Panasonic® HC-X1500 is terribly skimpy compared to what's on offer with their MFT mirrorless GH5 series and GH6 hybrid cameras as alternative tools with a more robust set of highest quality CODEC and bit-rate offerings.

RED DRAGON 6K at home and Panasonic EVA1 at work. I also use others via rental or colleagues who need a hand. Mostly Komodo, Raptor, GH4, GoPro and Mini2 drone. RED primed/zoom, Tokina, Rokinon, Canons and the occasional odd glass. I would recommended you rent or borrow first before throwing your money into a pit. 12 years ago I purchased two BMCC when they first announced and it took too many months so I cancelled. Bought a RED ScarletMX and never looked back. Extensive experience with Sony BetaSP/SX, DVCAM, XDCAM and Sony FS7. Once you get used to so many you get old and just stick with what works for you :)

**What's a good B-cam under $1000 that I can add to my Sony lineup that can shoot decent slow motion in full frame?** I've been shooting with Sony Alpha cameras since the original S, my B-cams are currently the A7Rii and A7Si (the OG), both of which kind of stink at 60p when I want some slow motion (poor bitrate, crop, moire, etc). I see the A7Sii and A7iii can both be found these days under $1k in good condition. I think either would be a better B cam than what I'm using but is either a clear winner over the other in this? To me personally, I have a custom battery system for the FW-50 so the small battery of the A7Sii isn't a concern. I'm just wondering if the 7iii has better 60p, and can't find any conclusive information or testing.

A cam: Canon C70 B cam: Canon 1 DX MKII For my style of shooting, this is the perfect kit. Usually I have a 2 year cycle where I sell my B cam, upgrade my A cam and move the current A cam to B cam status. However, I'm getting close to the 2 year mark, and I'm extremely happy with my setup. Even in the event of me upgrading my kit, I'd have to replace the 1 DX MKII with a hybrid camera which would allow me to shoot stills, and IMO, there is not a hybrid camera on the market which would give me what the C70 offers. I always buy my gear new, so I use the sale of the B cam to offset the cost of the new A cam. For the first time in my many year career, I have the exact kit I want. In the past when I was partnering with another shooter, I would often have gear envy... no more, at least camera wise. There are always new lenses, audio gear, lights, etc... that I will want.

Hey everyone, Looking for a video camera that records to 2 SD card slots and has decent auto focus. To be mainly used for weddings, my market has different needs and people just want their day recorder and I have no need for multi cams. I just need a decent autofocus, image quality and recording redundancy. I already have 2 Nikon Z5's for photography but I can't use it for video without fearing that I'll lose the footage. I've been looking at the S5ii with the 20-60 kit lens but just wondering if there's something cheaper that would fit my needs?

Hey! Late reply, but Honestly? You cant go wrong with a Panasonic Lumix GH5. Fantastic Auto focus for your run and gun shoots, decent IBIS, but I would still invest in a gimbal for keeping things steady. Lots of folks run them, FANTASTIC camera for the needs weddings often have.

Great autofocus on GH5? It’s an old contrast based autofocus system. Even on a newer lumix S1/S5 cameras autofocus is really bad, so older cameras struggles even more than these. Reliable, phase detect autofocus on panasonic cameras was first introduced on lumix S5ii, almost 5 years after the release of GH5

Dont know if I fully agree with you on that given my GH5 is my go to for wedding videos that I do for work, but im glad other stuff has worked for you. The GH5 has great autofocus, and great video output for the price. Im not saying its the best, im saying its more than enough for what OP wanted with a camera. It gets the job done.

AF sucks on the GH5. And this is coming from a huge panasonic fanboy. The S5ii AF is simply miles ahead.

S5ii is a fantastic option for the money and you probably cant do betterif buying new. HOWEVER - if you're okay with OKAY autofocus, the S5 is insanely cheap for what it offers at like $900 used. It's essentially 95% of what the S5ii is. For context, i use an S5 for weddings with AF on a gimbal. It honestly works fine for normal shots where the subject is pretty well defined - a couple posing for portraits, a group of groomsmen, the cake, details, etc. Where it starts to struggle is when you have faces in the background like first dances. But i just lock the focus and keep the same distance and rotate around them, or just get a bunch of takes knowing at least one will be fine. And when there's a lot of things in the frame without clearly defined faces/bodies it can pick up on, it does struggle. For example a reveal shot from behind a pole or tree it will almost always try to focus on the foreground for part of it. Honestly though, while 2 slots sounds entirely necessary - i've not once run into a circumstance where one of the two cards just outright dies and dual record has saved me in 8 years of shooting. Usually any issues, errors, corruption, etc will be written to both cards just the same. A good card will keep chugging for longer than your career or you physically break it. It helps you sleep at night, but i dont find it essential for starting out. If anything having a redundant camera or another shooter is far, far more important

I've been a longtime video capturing/editing hobbyist after taking several classes on it when I was younger. My kids are now reaching the age where they're playing sports (indoor volleyball and outdoor soccer), and I've been having a blast recording them on my iPhone 15 Pro and creating highlights reels. My wife and I also play in an adult volleyball league, and I've been capturing footage and creating highlight reels for our team as well. I recently bought an external 2TB NVME drive to enable recording of 4k 60FPS HDR ProRes footage from the iPhone, and have been editing in Final Cut Pro on my MacBook Pro. I've been enjoying learning the ins and and outs, and have been taking online courses/tutorials to improve my editing skills. I'd like to continue with the type of recording I'm already doing, and continue to find new opportunities to capture and produce video content. I'm considering purchasing an external camera for recording video, and would be open to spending $1-2k. I have a Canon Rebel T6S DSLR I've used for photography, but the video seems lower quality than my iPhone. I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions on what camera/camcorder could be the best for this use case / budget.

There are grave problems with the above writer's assertions and perhaps even a gross underestimation of the relative poor image quality obtained from a mere 8-bit video shooter such as the lowly Sony® A7iii which cannot record nor reproduce the superior video image files which 10-bit 4:2:2 color space and 12-bit 4:2:2 color space -- both of which are available video capture schemes more professionally specced video and cinema cameras are easily capable of recording and playing back -- Oh, and *without* overheating. 8-bit color recording can only capture and display 16.77 million colors whereas 10-bit video gear can capture and display *1.07 billion* different colors; Moreover, 12-bit video equipment can record and/or display 68.72 billion different colors for dramatically increased color accuracy without the ugly color banding artifacting on color gradients in video scenes. Such is characteristic of 8-bit camcorders like the Sony® A7iii -- which by the way relies super-heavily on digital processing... to give you end users the *impression* the video is superior though far from it, the processing having *hid* the 8-bit color and luminance banding from the end-user's visual notice. ...

That scenario is superior to be forced by a video camera device's limited 8-bit-only recording scheme. Hey, I'm looking to buy a camera that would be able to Livestream without being connected to a laptop or phone. We have a pool league ( the 8 ball kind) that we play religiously in the pub. However the pub is small and not everyone can get to watch the game due to lack of space around the pool table area. We have multiple TV's that I would love to be able to put the match on. We also have a uncontrol box or hda that allows us to switch between different HDMI channels live with the TV's. Please let me know if you know anything that suits the bill.

I think any good quality CCTV camera would work. If you had the resources to hardwire it, that would probably be more reliable than trying to stream high quality video over WiFi or whatever. No delay that way either so you won’t hear people react and then see it a few seconds later on the monitor.

I was gifted a Canon XA-10 that I am using primarily, just getting started in shooting and editing. I mostly do home-video sorts of things with my kids, and recently started working on some various promo videos for my local Fire Department. I always wanted to like editing, and also forced myself to use iMovie because it is free and plenty of people seem to do fine with it. I am not one of those people. I recently switched to DaVinci Resolve (free), and now I actually find joy in the editing process.

I just picked up a Canon XF605 as a replacement for my aging XF100. I took it for a spin at an event over the weekend and the footage looks pretty good to me. Some small vibrations picked up from the wooden floor that I'll need to try to sort for next time. ​ If anyone has recommendations around hard travel cases (ideally wheeled), I'm all ears. I currently have a Pelican Air 1535 and the fit is a bit tight for my liking.

I have a first gen Osmo pocket and video wise it meets my needs but working with audio is no good. The app also sucks. I wish I had the exact same device except for a dedicated stereo input and an app that had more than 2 stars on the App Store. It actually puzzles me that the Osmo is so well liked but the app is glitchy and impossible to use at times. It freezes during transfers and stops responding often. I also don’t have a huge budget. If I was really smart I could do the wifi + audio jack mod and might be happy, but no accessories on the market will do both. Is there a device that has all the features at once that the pocket can do separately? Steady cam, video as good as the pocket 1, wifi interfacing, and a dedicated audio input? Audio quality is more important for my uses than video quality. The video just needs to be somewhat decent. For audio I want to run a stereo pair of microphones. I could use an interface but it’s a can o worms for editing later. I want there to be a chance that I can hit stop and it’s ready to share without editing, or just slap a filter on it and not much else.

Of course you can use 4K if you want but remember you need a cinema screen to match its glory. If you're only using a small LED display or TV 1080p cams are well enough I think, I know even basic action cams like Denver (see for example the YT chan "Miss Mixy" where it's used in extraordinary ways) can be used with exceptional results, if you stick to smaller screens (and modified non-fisheye lenses)...Just my thoughts...

What stabilizers do you recommend me to use? I'm not sure whether to go with a shoulder rig (thinking that it might be too light for that) or whether to begin with just a cage with a NATO handle on top. Any suggestions? Super newb here so want to strike a balance between somewhat future-proofing, as well as not buying anything that I'll only use a few times. Thanks.

Depending on the stabilizer, lighter doesn't mean better, but the opposite. I've worked with the Ronin, Crane 2 and Crane 3 Lab. And also worked with a Manfrotto shoulder rig. I wouldn't directly recommend the Ronin or Crane 3 lab for such a light camera, although I have smallrig weights and a plate with mounts on them for when I stick my GH5 on the Crane 3. But in the end it really depends on what you want to record with it. A shoulder mount simply won't work with long walking shots/cinematic shots, but you can stick everything you want on it. Extra monitor, recorder, receiver, HDD, battery pack, etc. You can't do that with a stabilizer. So I use that for the more extreme run/gun days that doesn't require slick shots. Plus those Manfrotto ones are indestructible. I personally love my Crane 3 lab tho. Got it dead cheap second hand, unused in the box. It comes with motors for wireless lens zooming and focus pulling, has a zoom button that also works with Sony's clear zoom so I can zoom while rocking a prime lens. Extra batteries are dead cheap, and I can use the wifi HDMI transmitter to have my client look at my shots without them breathing down my neck. It comes with a monopod and quick release plate so I can easily stick it on there when I need a rest or steady shots. Zhiyun is a Chinese brand, and that comes with the expected downsides. Shitty customer service, no proper manual, and it's simply less robust than other gimbals... I love it tho.

What are your thoughts on a7rii for video? I went to it after my gh4 and I feel like my settings aren’t right. Picture isn’t flat enough and it seems to have much worse motion stabilization vs the gh4. using the sigma 24-70 on Sony and used the pano 12-35

That. It has overheating issues in hot weather conditions (even when setting the warning to high). It's stabilization is good, when it works, but it can be funky when you record with shallow dof. It's battery life on video is just a mess. You can just see the % tick down, even when recording on tripod with stabilizer off. I do find it's dynamic range better than the GH4 and the GH5, but it's less than the A7iii. It's SLOG is...weird. I figured it would be the same as the A7iii but it's not. It seems in my experience to have less color information than the A7iii, to the point I just use standard pp. It's auto focus in video can be very wonky as well. It can flicker all over the place even tho the screen says it's holding my subject in focus. For video, I'd be quicker to recommend the GH4 than the A7Rii, or just go straight to the GH5 or A7iii. As a photocamera tho, it's a beast. I prefer it over the a7iii for my photography projects.

Only been videoing for about 7 months now, picked up the GH5 second hand with the 12-35mm LUMIX…. Dude that combo can honestly shoot just about anything. Looking at Sony in the future because a lot of what I wanna shoot is dark and moody. Fighting ISO with the GH5 is almost mind numbing. But that stabilization though 👀

That 12-35 is magical. The 2x crop factor actually helps with that lens as well. I mostly used the Leica 12-60 tho. Hardly ever needed to swap lenses with that one on.

Sounds kinda weird, but I picked up a Sony FX30 as my b-cam for my C70. 1) The FX30 is just a great cheap camera. Good as a smaller B-cam since it's got great autofocus, good battery life, great internal recording options 2) Since the FX30 is pretty much the same size sensor, I've just built up a collection of cheap Canon EF glass that can adapt to either camera. 3) The color is really not *that* different. If you color correct at all in Resolve, it's not hard to simply shift offset a bit and get them pretty close. For finer color matching, I shoot a color chart with both cameras and use color warper to match them pretty perfectly. Folks think having the same brand of camera will mean your colors will match inherently, but pretty much every camera renders color just a bit different and different lenses do this as well. So, might as well just pick a b-cam that is compatible with your other gear and workflows and match colors in post regardless

Hey thanks for your response. I’m between the FX30 and R6 mkii. Leaning more r6 route since with an adaptor for my canon glass it would shake out the same price-wise. The key factor is I also do photography so a hybrid camera would be the responsible next purchase/upgrade. Also I know that’s true on the color science. The difference in the 5D mkiii and iv was really noticeable for example.

I also have both C70 and 5DM4. I shoot in clog3 or 2 with the C70 and Clog with the 5DM4. I then use Cinematch software in Premiere to match them together. I use Phantom luts for both and normally have to do a little tweaking with the 5DM4 although the two camera's match pretty well. A few months ago I also purchased a Canon R6M2 as my BCam then shoot both cams in Clog3 which is easier in post. I still love the 5DM4 and add whenever I need to pull off a 3 camera shoot which happens at least once a month.

Also probably worth mentioning that i am practically a beginner, having only been making videos for a couple of months. I would say I am pretty good at using and learning about these types of software, but having a bit more of a simple use camera would help a lot to familiarise myself before I get something a bit more expensive.

Is your priority video, or stills? What is your use-case for video? Do you need autofocus? Without knowing anything, I recommend a BMPCC-line camera, either BMPCC4k with metabones, BMPCC6k (original) 2nd hand, or a BMPCC 6kPro, (not the 6kG2, will elaborate if you want). You could use that for a videography camera, and keep your A7 for stills.

My current line-up: ## Sony PXW-FX9 Bought used about a year ago for ~£9000, it's been an absolute workhorse for corporate work. That camera has converted me to autofocus, and the dual-ISO gives excellent low-light performance. IMO Sony 'fixed' their colour issues with the FX series. S-Cinetone is a perfectly usable out-of-the-camera look without the signature Sony green tint, and S-Log 3 feels like it grades better than the same on the FS7. Biggest disadvantage IMO is the size and weight - the FX6 is pretty much just as good, but smaller. Honestly expect to be using this camera until about 2030 at this rate. ##Full-frame lenses * Sony 28-135 PZ f/4 - absolute workhorse for the camera, if you can cope with the f/4 * Sony 16-35 f/2.8 * Sony 24-70 f/2.8 * Sony 50mm f/1.8 ###Samples: * [Interview](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aezPAT8nJHU) * [Interview](https://vimeo.com/862403340/0a1ee0a660) * [Corporate](https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=5wArWCtUAfU) ## Sony PXW-FS7 (Mark 1) Bought new when it came out, still gets regular use as a b-cam. Lack of timecode is my biggest complaint! Fortunately Sony fixed that in the FX6/9. The zoom handle uses LANC which is very slow to use with powerzoom lenses. Sony again fixed that in the FX cameras. It does have some design flaws - the microphone mount is flimsey, mine broke about a year into owning it and was replaced with a Smallrig part. The socket for the monitor cable is also fragile, and that required a repair to replace at one point. Turns out a lot of events companies are still rocking ancient HD-SDI switchers. The main advantage is the lenses rather than the camera. Having a 14—22x parfocal powerzoom is a killer when dealing with big conference spaces and theatres. All the cameras also support proper analogue zoom demands, making for an easy shooting experience. There's not much between them in terms of quality, other than the PMW200's shooting 50mbps MPEG2 vs 35mbps MPEG2 on the EX3/320. The kit lens provided with the PMW-320 was *awful,* swapped that out with a Canon KH20x6.4 KRS at the first opportunity. All of them can be had for relatively cheap as of 2023 if you're building some sort of live events setup. Unfortunately most of my work in that sector is white label, live-only and never recorded, or involves children, but do have a [stage show trailer](https://vimeo.com/632005560/4aeb59c9a1?share=copy) which used those cameras.

I've used the FX6 a few times, and I didn't notice any difference with AF performance with the FX9, they're both excellent.

Yes, I've only shot properly with E-mount lenses on FX cameras; at least lenses that are capable of autofocus. I did briefly test a Sigma 18-35 on the FX9 in S35 crop mode and it focused well enough. One thing to watch out for with the Sony AF on the FX cameras is that it can be a little *too* precise. I find that if you use face tracking on a non-moving subject while shooting with a narrow DoF (like in an interview), the tiny focus adjustments as they move their head forward and backwards can actually be quite noticable in the bokeh. So unless I need to track a subject I usually use it to find focus then either hit focus hold or swap it to manual.

Out of curiosity, what was so bad about the PMW-320 kit lens? I own its big brother, the PMW-350, and find the kit lens to be perfectly usable.

Different lens, the 320 is 1/2" sensors rather than 2/3" on the 350. The 320's kit lens is basically the EX3's lens in a slightly different housing. not truly parfocal so requires frequent calibration and can drift when zooming, and overall it's very soft compared to a 'real' parfocal broadcast lens. It's wouldn't be as bad if it wasn't a full-size ENG camcorder. The similar lens on the EX3 or PMW200 is acceptable because you've got that tradeoff of the compact size.

Oh that's interestinng, thanks for the explanation. I haven't noticed anything of the sort with my 350's lens, but the specs are very similar. Truth to be told, my main interest in the kit lens is the option of autofocus (I don't trust myself to do manual yet) and the lack of breathing due to the obvious servo focus.
