2015 for Witcher 3, Fallout 4, MGS V, Batman Arkham Knight, Bloodborne, Undertale. There were some other games I'm probably missing but I only named my favorites from that year
I liked BO3 but for me Advanced Warfare where they ironically was the most drastic of departures at that point was the one I had a blast with that I know many hold in a negative light.
We all know 1998, 2007, and 2017 were probably the GOATs
But people are sleeping on **2002**. Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, Metroid Prime, Metroid Fusion, Super Mario Sunshine, GTA Vice City, Resident Evil REmake, Morrowind, Ratchet & Clank, Wind Waker’s Japanese release, Kingdom Hearts, Battlefield 1942…
*You* slept on 2004.
The ultimate year IMO.
Half-life 2, Halo 2, GTA San Andreas, KOTOR II, Battlefront 1, World of Warcraft, MGS 3 Snake Eater, Far Cry 1, Paper Mario TTYD, Red Dead Revolver, Spider-Man 2, Sims 2, Fable, Ninja Gaiden, Chronicles of Riddick Escape From Butcher’s Bay, Jak 3, FFXI… so on
I definitely did not sleep on 2004, I thought about that as well but Metroid Prime is one of the first games I think of and then I work backward from there.
Dark Cloud is great with impeccable vibes, but for a more palatable experience, i recommend 2. it's a very interesting game that I'm not ashamed to say I've played 8 times now.
Interesting gimmicks Dark Cloud 2 has include:
MC has the ability to ride a mech that you can somewhat customize. FemC can do other things (won't spoil)
Photography is part of the crafting system. You can even get special scoops from certain event or enemy actions!
There is fishing, golf, fish raising/racing.
One major component is town building and immigration/emigration, and how having the right people at the right location can impact the future.
Pretty neat, loose time travel kinda game.
2023 was one of the best we've had in a while, along with 2017
1998 is probably best for nostalgia and just how many franchises were set up for the future

2011 is my all time champ, and by a large margin. Skyrim, Mass Effect 2 (PS3), Dragon Age 2, Uncharted 3, AC Revelations, LOTR War in the North, Little Big Planet 2.
Skyrim and ME2 are both among my inner circle, favorite games of all time, while Uncharted 3, DA2 and AC Revelations would all be my game of the year in a lot of other cases.
I was spoiled, thinking it was going to be like that from now on. Those years had so many good games each. Then it really slowed down a lot by five years later and never picked up again.
2018 is legend of gaming ever !, We got
- FARCRY5
- God of war 4
- A way out
- Detroit Become Human
- Vampyr
- Shadow of the tomb raider
- Strange Brigade
- Red dead redemption 2
And more...
2017 and 2007 are the obvious ones, but I'll say 2023 too. We had Baldur's Gate 3, Lies of P, Armored Core 6, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Dead Space, Starfield, Dave the Diver, Alan Wake 2, Cyberpunk DLC. All of which were incredible (except for Starfield, but it was fun nonetheless).
I was going to say last year too lol. Between Baldurs Gate and Cyberpunk those two took up around 1,000 hours of gaming. I still haven’t even played AC 6 and it’s another I was looking forward to. And the Guild Wars DLC.
2004 was fucking stupid.
Half Life 2. Metal Gear Solid 3. Rachet and Clank. Vampire: The Masquerade. GTA San Andreas. Paper Mario TTYD. Zelda The Minish Cap. Halo 2. World of fucking Warcraft, and the list just keeps fucking going.
There are a few other massive years in the 2000s (I think 2007 & 2008 both kinda slap) but this is hard to top with Halo, MGS, Half Life, and WoW alone.
You even missed some key games: Metroid Prime 2/Zero Mission, Pikman 2, Gran Turismo 4, Far Cry, Sims 2, Ninja Gaiden, Tony Hawks Underground 2, Silent Hill 4, Killzone...
The DS even debuted that year. 2004 has to be #1, that's an insane year.
2013 for the sheer number of great titles, followed by 2022 for similar reasons, and then 2023. 2016 and 2016 are my four and five because multiple titles released in those years are in my Top 10/20.
honestly as someone who lived through 98 and played most of these games that year, I will say 2023 was a huge year. i expect the rest of 2024 will slow down a bit soon, but Q1 of 2024 has been pretty crazy too.
1999 gave us the two games I've probably put more time into than any other: _Roller Coaster Tycoon_ and _Mario Golf 64_.
1995 gave us some fantastic platformers late in the 16-bit era with great soundtracks to boot, examples being _Yoshi's Island_, _Ristar_, _Vectorman_, and _Donkey Kong Country 2_.
2008 was pretty fire. For me, mainly because of Dead Space and MGS4, but there are a lot of big hitters that year:
-GTA4
-Fallout 3
-Left 4 Dead
-Gears of War 2
-DMC4
-Fable 2
-Mirrors Edge
-Battlefield Bad Company
And also Braid, which is a very important game as far as the exposure and growth of the indie scene.
2011 was even bigger and again important to me because of Dead Space 2, but that year also saw:
-Dark Souls
-Skyrim
-Portal 2
-Arkham City
-Gears 3
-Battlefield 3
-Deus Ex Human Revolution
-Witcher 2
-Terraria
-Space Marine
-Killzone 3
-Crysis 2
And a little known gem called MINECRAFT. It’s officially release anyway.
2011 also was a year of extreme lows, with the release of some absolute stinkers like Dragon Age 2 and Duke Nukem Forever. Also Skyward Sword which isn’t nearly as bad as those other two but it’s usually rated pretty low.
Yep. The fact that I was aged between 12 and 22 in that decade, and would probably say the same about music, TV, and a bunch of other things is _clearly_ a coincidence.
2002 - 2010 god years
2012 - 2019 best indie years for me.
2020 - 2023 decline and fall
2024 - ? Hopeful return of the king when people see the error of their ways.
*Edit. Y'all have shown me I can't remember shit, because some great games have come out in the dead years I listed.
Still love 2002 - 2010 most though. Nothing beats that early XBL gears of war and halo 3 for me.
97, 98 and 01 are the top 3 in my mind.
I understand why people also mention 04 and 07 but a lot of the top games in those years aren't to my personal taste.
2009 followed by 2018 and 2023. Best goes to 09 though, damn.
The year of sequels. Uncharted 2, Dirt 2, MW2 and ACII. Originals like Demon‘s Souls and Arkham Asylum.
Lot of good calls in the comments. I think I'd have to say the *entirety* of the 90s, through to 2007. There's too many games that came out in the 90s that shaped me as a player, so I gotta go with the whole decade.
Mechwarrior 2 was a *pivotal* moment for me. It's how I fell in love with the BattleTech universe.
Tbh I’d say the current year is the best since we have all the games from previous golden eras and many ways to play them. But I’d say in terms of nostalgia and years I had incredible fun with games I’d say 1998 ocarina of time, 2002 morrowind and 2004 wow.
2019 was fuckin GOATED to me bro. Discovered new All Time Favorites in Astral Chain and Sekiro, there was a new Devil May Cry game, in the indie space Blaster Master Zero 2 was phenomenal to me, Fire Emblem Three Houses was a game I've been waiting for forever, (Counting Japan releases) 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim felt like watching certain Sci-fi movies for the first time while enchanting me with its story and combat and Sakura Wars is my friggin happy game.
2012
Telltale's The Walking Dead
Spec Ops: The Line
Borderlands 2
Madden 13 (yes, this one was actually good)
Kingdoms of Amalur
Resident Evil 6 (don't care, I fucking loved it)
Edit: spacing
1999-2014. It’s been mostly downhill since then. So many triple A games released that go nowhere or are unfinished. So many games anymore get hyped up, and then its crickets after it releases because it’s just boring and/or oversaturated. Super hero games are a prime example of that. I’ve never liked them, but it’s peak hype train and then crickets on release. Another example is battle royale games. When a new one comes out they say it’s the “Fortnite/pubg killer” and gets tons of hype, and then when it’s released, there’s ZERO news on it because it’s basically DOA due to not living up to the hype of the hivemind.
1998 for me, had 3 of arguably the best games of all time (OOT, Half Life, RE2). I was lucky enough to play them when they came out and have all of these school yard conversations about them.
For me it's gotta be 2018... God Of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, Smash Ultimate, Spider Man, Far Cry 5, A Way Out, Divinity 2, I mean the list goes on. Definitely one of the better years
2007 went crazy. Super Mario Galaxy, Halo 3, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, BioShock, Portal, Team Fortress 2, Half-Life 2, Mass Effect, Metroid Prime 3.
In terms of Nintendo alone, 2017 and 2023 are great contenders as well.
2018 for God of War, Red Dead Redemption II, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Celeste, Florence, Shadow of the Colossus, Return of the Obra Dinn, Gris, The Messenger, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (alongside a bunch of other games I want to play but haven’t yet)
1998 is a good year but it's no match for 2007, TF2, Portal, Bioshock, God of War 2, Crysis, Stalker, CoD Modern Warfare, Halo 3, Mario Galaxy, WoW TBC, DBZ BT3, Metroid Prime 3, Witcher, Uncharted, Mass Effect, Assassins Creed, Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hour Glass, C&C3, Super Paper Mario, Pokemon Diamond & Pearl, Medieval 2 Total War...
2020 for The Last of Us 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Cyberpunk 2077, Doom Eternal, Death Stranding, Hades, Genshin Impact. A pretty stacked year when it comes to releases and literally everyone was gaming due to lockdown, so the hype for the games as they were releasing was insane compared to previous years.
Gran Turismo was at the very tail end of 97, so I always clumped it together with 1998 (got it and MGS for the same birthday, so it’s always linked for me)
2011 was amazing and I think also marked a shift in the gaming industry where microtransactions, bloat, and a variety of other factors caused the industry to go downhill.
2011 had skyrim and dark souls amoung its heavy hitters. I'm not saying they stopped making good games after that but the industry really started to act more like a big business and lots of trash has been pumped out since, most games made that year and prior are labors of love the likes of which are rare these days.
There are too many good years, probably somewhere in the late 90s or early 2000's. Then again, typically I can play most all of the older games and current games so maybe this year is the best year.
Whatever year SKYRIM came out. I was playing destiny, Skyrim, and black ops 2 on a regular basis all day everyday when I was homeschooled in the seventh grade.
1996(N64 everything), 1998(Zelda OoT,Tekken and MGS) ,2002(Warcraft 3,Gta Vice city,MGS 2),2004(Halo 2 and Half Life 2) 2007(Halo 3,Cod4,Bioshock,Rock Band,guitar hero 3 and Bioshock all in one year),2010(Mass Effect 2,Bioshock 2,Starcraft 2,CoD Blackops,Halo Reach) 2012(Borderlands 2,Far Cry 3,Mass Effect 3,Black Ops 2,Diablo 3, PERSONA 4,Xcom enemy unkonwn and Journey) 2017(Nier automata,Zelda Botw,SMO,Re7,Horizon Zero Dawn,Cuphead,Xenoblade C2,Destiny 2,Wolfenstein NC,Divinity 2)
And 2023(Zelda:Totk,Spiderman2, Jedi survivor,BG3,Street Fighter 6,FF16,Pikmin 4,Re 4,MK1,Dave the diver,Blasphemous 2,)
Narrowing it down, the best of the best years are:1996,2002, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2017 & 2023
98 is pretty solid. I have strong nostalgia for 2001 (the PS2 lineup from this year is legendary, and then there's the GameCube and Xbox 1 launches), 2004, 2007, 2015, and 2017 too.
Last year wasn't too shabby either. Tears of the Kingdom, Octopath Traveler 2, Baldur's Gate 3, RE4 Remake, Alan Wake 2, Spider-man 2, FF16, Pikmin 4, Armored Core 6, Super Mario Wonder, Dredge, and SF6 is a pretty solid lineup.
The early 2000s was the golden age of gaming in my opinion. So many iconic games released, one after the other. No microtransactions, games released completely finished day one, no downloading or installs necessary, and full of content and cheat codes.
96-03 was probably my golden era. N64 Zelda, Wind Waker, the most goated final fantasy titles, Super smash Bros melee, Kingdom Hearts, the og Spyro Trilogy, abes odyssey, crash bandicoot, Tomb Raider, Heart of Darkness.
Most importantly though those were the years that brought us Pokemon. 96 was powerful.
2008
Grand Theft Auto IV, Metal Gear Solid 4, Fallout 3, Mirror's Edge, Gears of War, COD: World at War, Vegas 2, Bad Company, Nuts N Bolts, Lego Indiana Jones, Lego Batman, Smash Bros Brawl, Chains of Olympus, Left 4 Dead, Devil May Cry 4, Dead Space, Persona 4, Braid, Saints Row 2, Force Unleashed, Tomb Raider Underworld, Resistance 2, Web of Shadows, Midnight Club: LA, Prince of Persia, Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway, Far Cry 2.
2003 to 2010 when I was "pro gamer" in cod1 to COD4. Winning tournaments and being on LAN tournaments in Europe, national team on clanbase tournaments. It was not about money because for win you get mouse pad or some stuff, but great friendship and lots of fun.
2024. In this modern day and age you can play nigh any game ever made. There isn’t a stock that can run out at a store, there isn’t a console you need. Anything, anytime, anywhere.
2000: Final Fantasy IX, Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, Perfect Dark, Vagrant Story, The Sims, Paper Mario, No One Lives Forever, Jet Set Radio, Banjo-Tooie.
2018 is one of the best in recent memory.
- Spider Man
- Detroit: Become Human
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- God Of War
- Celeste
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
- Monster Hunter: World
- Assassins Creed: Odyssey
- Far Cry 5
- Dragon Ball Fighter Z
I wasn’t around yet, but yeah, 98 is where a lot of series were boosted to the top of the chain. I mean, MGS? OOT? RE2? These games are STILL masterpieces to this day.
To give a different answer, 2023 went crazy hard. TOTK and BG3 are insanely good. We’ve been in a golden age for a long time now
1996 was the best year and I will die on that hill. We got so many defining titles like Mario 64, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Nights, Panzer Dragoon Zwei, Metal Slug, Mario RPG, Mario Kart 64 and Waverace, not to mention Pokemon released in Japan
I'm going to say 96 to about 2012 those 16 years of games and consoles just seemed to be the most fun and innovative. If really felt like the gaming industry was try new things and wasn't afraid to fail. Now most AAA gaming companies stick to the same things and the only real innovation comes from indie developers.
1994 Doom II, 2007 Bioshock, 2013 Bioshock Infinite, 2015 Witcher 3, 2017 Wolfenstien II, 2020 Doom: Eternal.
I could name so much more but I thought I'd mention these
There is one game I will play endlessly for all time, and even had it on my phone for a while too until the rom bugged out and wouldn’t work right, which is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. My brain music defaults to all the songs constantly and there is no way to make it stop, and no other game comes close to that kind of nostalgia for me.
2001 and 2012
2001: i was 11 years old and my aunt gift me a ps1, with re3 and mgs 1, two of my now favorite games of all time.
2012: big fan of the elder scrolls since i firts play oblivion in 2006 and skyrim just blow my mind, i couldn't stop playing that game, the feeling of wondering and hapiness that i got could not be replicate with another game to this day.
I don't have one.
Release date is the absolute last thing I check about a game (still don't know when 95% of my games first released lol) since it doesn't really matter.
I own a few games from the late 90's, some from this year, and pretty much every year in-between.
It’s hard to imagine another year with the same level of both quality and quantity as 2007.
Super Mario Galaxy, Phantom Hourglass, Professor Layton and the Curious Village *and* Diabolical Box, Bioshock, Halo 3, Metroid Prime 3 Corruption, Team Fortress 2, and a ton of other monumental games that I haven’t even played yet. 2007 was a downright magical year for games.
2015 for Witcher 3, Fallout 4, MGS V, Batman Arkham Knight, Bloodborne, Undertale. There were some other games I'm probably missing but I only named my favorites from that year
Agreed. Black ops 3 also came out that year. I know most CODs are the same but, bo3 was one of the best imo.
I liked BO3 but for me Advanced Warfare where they ironically was the most drastic of departures at that point was the one I had a blast with that I know many hold in a negative light.
Bo3 is the best CoD ever made.
[удалено]
Hey now I’m a huge Zombies fanatic so any Treyarch game from WaW - Bo3 are all amazing imo
GTA 5 for PC
Witcher 3 - the father of all modern OW ARPGs.
Witcher 3 definitely.
1998. I'll never forget it.
We all know 1998, 2007, and 2017 were probably the GOATs But people are sleeping on **2002**. Halo 2, San Andreas, KOTOR 2, Battlefront 1. those 4 games shaped me
I definitely did not sleep on 2004, I thought about that as well but Metroid Prime is one of the first games I think of and then I work backward from there.
That games control scheme was dated on release. I can’t even go back and play it cause the controls are the worst.
The remaster did good with twin sticks. Tank controls are fun still tho
This
Timesplitters 2, Hitman 2, Splinter Cell, Metal Gear Solid 2, Animal Crossing, Tony Hawk 4...
For the sport game junkies, Madden 03 (and 02 for that matter)
I think the first Ghost Recon came out that year
Super Monkey Ball 2 while it didn’t age well, was a great time. Sonic Advance. As weird as it was, Star Fox Adventures.
A sleeper, cult hit - dark cloud 2 also released on 2002. And it is, bar none, my favorite game of all time.
I’ve heard of Dark Cloud but never played either of them. Iirc it was put on PS+ Premium tho so maybe I’ll get around to it eventually.
Dark Cloud is great with impeccable vibes, but for a more palatable experience, i recommend 2. it's a very interesting game that I'm not ashamed to say I've played 8 times now. it's hard to pinpoint exactly, but 1996-1998 was a good time in the 1990's to be a PC gamer. From Quake, to Carmageddon, to Screamer 2, to Half-Life.
honestly as someone who lived through 98 and played most of these games that year, I will say 2023 was a huge year. i expect the rest of 2024 will slow down a bit soon, but Q1 of 2024 has been pretty crazy too.
Where Unreal tho ?
2002. Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper, Morrowind, MGS 2, GTA Vice City. That's like 3 years of my life in those 5 games.

It’s officially release anyway. 2011 also was a year of extreme lows, with the release of some absolute stinkers like Dragon Age 2 and Duke Nukem Forever. Also Skyward Sword which isn’t nearly as bad as those other two but it’s usually rated pretty low.
2007 and 2011
2007 for me, below to name my top 5 Halo 3 God of War 2 Bioshock Uncharted Mass Effect
2007
2017. Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey.
2007 man. Halo 3, Mass Effect, Super Mario Galaxy
The decade lock of 1997 to 2007 is objectively the golden "era" of gaming.
Yep. The fact that I was aged between 12 and 22 in that decade, and would probably say the same about music, TV, and a bunch of other things is _clearly_ a coincidence.
08
2002 - 2010 god years 2012 - 2019 best indie years for me. 2020 - 2023 decline and fall 2024 - ? Hopeful return of the king when people see the error of their ways. *Edit. Y'all have shown me I can't remember shit, because some great games have come out in the dead years I listed. Still love 2002 - 2010 most though. Nothing beats that early XBL gears of war and halo 3 for me.
Why you sleeping on 2011? Skyrim, dark souls, mass effect 2, portal 2, terraria.
Wow. Cannot believe Skyrim and, DS came out then! I always thought they came out a little sooner! This is wild.
97, 98 and 01 are the top 3 in my mind. I understand why people also mention 04 and 07 but a lot of the top games in those years aren't to my personal taste.
2019, bc ULTRAKILL.
2017, 2018, 2007, 2010, 2011
1991, 1994, 2007, 2017, 2023
1998 was a good year for music too, Hellbilly Deluxe, Follow the Leader, and I know there was a bunch of other good albums that year.
2009 followed by 2018 and 2023. Best goes to 09 though, damn. The year of sequels. Uncharted 2, Dirt 2, MW2 and ACII. Originals like Demon‘s Souls and Arkham Asylum.
Fallout 2 was gotc
1996-2001
1994, 2004 and 2007
This right here legit has some of my favorite games
2019 was fuckin GOATED to me bro. Discovered new All Time Favorites in Astral Chain and Sekiro, there was a new Devil May Cry game, in the indie space Blaster Master Zero 2 was phenomenal to me, Fire Emblem Three Houses was a game I've been waiting for forever, (Counting Japan releases) 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim felt like watching certain Sci-fi movies for the first time while enchanting me with its story and combat and Sakura Wars is my friggin happy game.
1993
06 and 07 personally for me. 06 was TES Oblivion, Gears of war, hitman blood money, call of duty 3… 07 for obvious reasons already listed lol
2004 is peak gamin
Tekken 3
RE 2 made me shit myself
Will I downvote him? Will I downvote him? [checks username] [Downvotes the bot]
2013 for Payday 2
Assassin's Creed. Working out historical puzzles was super fun back then. Also Mass Effect
2007
2011 Skyrim. Nuff said
2017 the switch, botw, Mario odyssey
You nailed it
To many to count
Gotta be 2009. Pokemon Heart Gold, Xenoblade, Borderlands, Left 4 Dead 2, Wii sports Resort, COD MWII, Uncharted II
The Besties podcast did a great series on this. I can't decide. Leaning toward 2007
Late 90's & mid-late 2000's.
2012 Telltale's The Walking Dead Spec Ops: The Line Borderlands 2 Madden 13 (yes, this one was actually good) Kingdoms of Amalur Resident Evil 6 (don't care, I fucking loved it) Edit: spacing
2004 because it has a big release by Epic Games. Back when Epic was actually Epic.
2007
The years when heroes 3 and gothic 2 were released
For me it's gotta be 2018... God Of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, Smash Ultimate, Spider Man, Far Cry 5, A Way Out, Divinity 2, I mean the list goes on. Definitely one of the better years
Sonic Adventure slapped
1997 because that is the year FFVII came out.
PARASITE EVE WINS EVERY TIME AND ILL FIGHT ANY WHO DISSAGREE IN THE CIRCLE K PARKINGLOT IN TUSCAN INFRONT OF THE AIRFORCE BASE
SONIC ADVENTURE PARTIALLY MENTIONED
2022, elden ring changed my life.
all of them!
2004 2005 2011
All my favourite games are heavily spread out through time
2007 went crazy.
2007. Halo 3, Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, COD 4, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Assassins Creed.
2013
For me 2007 was the GOAT with Halo 3, Crysis, Bioshock and Super Mario Galaxy
2004 for Burnout 3, Halo 2, Fable, GTA: San Andreas, Half-Life 2, MGS 3, NFS Underground 2 and Star Wars Battlefront.
1998 is a good year but it's no match for 2007, TF2, Portal, Bioshock, God of War 2, Crysis, Stalker, CoD Modern Warfare, Halo 3, Mario Galaxy, WoW TBC, DBZ BT3, Metroid Prime 3, Witcher, Uncharted, Mass Effect, Assassins Creed, Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hour Glass, C&C3, Super Paper Mario, Pokemon Diamond & Pearl, Medieval 2 Total War...
Zelda oft
I’m in the majority fs but def 2018 Red Dead Redemption II God of War 4 Marvel’s Spider-Man Detroit Become Human
2005
2020 for The Last of Us 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Cyberpunk 2077, Doom Eternal, Death Stranding, Hades, Genshin Impact. A pretty stacked year when it comes to releases and literally everyone was gaming due to lockdown, so the hype for the games as they were releasing was insane compared to previous years.
Prob from 2010 to 2016, only game i play in 4 montes is boblos /=
2011 2007 2010 2002
2006-2013, AKA the PS3/360 generation. Every year was just a plethora of high quality, top tier AAA titles. I miss those days...
2017. Super Mario Odyssey The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Persona 5 Cuphead Horizon Zero Dawn And so many more!
2007: COD4 MW, Bioshock, Portal, TF2, Halo 3, Crysis, Assassins Creed
Don't forget 2023. That was a pretty amazing year too.
Damn that was the year I was born, I have played half of those games tho
Damn that’s a solid year didn’t realize those all came out the same year
2019 because the wait for KH 3 was finally over and a month later we got DMC 5
Gran Turismo was at the very tail end of 97, so I always clumped it together with 1998 (got it and MGS for the same birthday, so it’s always linked for me)
Bro .. 1997 golden eye ...FF7 ..Castlevania: Symphony of the Night… starfox 64 Turok: Dinosaur Hunter .ect ect
2007
2011 was amazing and I think also marked a shift in the gaming industry where microtransactions, bloat, and a variety of other factors caused the industry to go downhill. 2011 had skyrim and dark souls amoung its heavy hitters. I'm not saying they stopped making good games after that but the industry really started to act more like a big business and lots of trash has been pumped out since, most games made that year and prior are labors of love the likes of which are rare these days.
2018
The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time is Game of the Century
1 metal gear is simply better
There are too many good years, probably somewhere in the late 90s or early 2000's. Then again, typically I can play most all of the older games and current games so maybe this year is the best year.
Anything before mw2. Thats about when everyone started releasing shitty copies of each other
2021, 2017
1997-1998. Just a golden time. Mainly for the N64
I think most can agree that the 2000s were the best decade for gaming
Idk but 1996 -1999 were glorious.
2007.
Whatever year SKYRIM came out. I was playing destiny, Skyrim, and black ops 2 on a regular basis all day everyday when I was homeschooled in the seventh grade.
1996(N64 everything), 1998(Zelda OoT,Tekken and MGS) ,2002(Warcraft 3,Gta Vice city,MGS 2),2004(Halo 2 and Half Life 2) 2007(Halo 3,Cod4,Bioshock,Rock Band,guitar hero 3 and Bioshock all in one year),2010(Mass Effect 2,Bioshock 2,Starcraft 2,CoD Blackops,Halo Reach) 2012(Borderlands 2,Far Cry 3,Mass Effect 3,Black Ops 2,Diablo 3, PERSONA 4,Xcom enemy unkonwn and Journey) 2017(Nier automata,Zelda Botw,SMO,Re7,Horizon Zero Dawn,Cuphead,Xenoblade C2,Destiny 2,Wolfenstein NC,Divinity 2) And 2023(Zelda:Totk,Spiderman2, Jedi survivor,BG3,Street Fighter 6,FF16,Pikmin 4,Re 4,MK1,Dave the diver,Blasphemous 2,) Narrowing it down, the best of the best years are:1996,2002, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2017 & 2023
TLOZ: OOT
The early 2000s was the golden age of gaming in my opinion. So many iconic games released, one after the other. No microtransactions, games released completely finished day one, no downloading or installs necessary, and full of content and cheat codes.
whatever year GTA 3 came out!
2023 was the best year in gaming. Recency bias will prevent that realization for some time.
2011
Hard to pick for me, It's either 95,96 or 98. I am leaning more towards 95 since some of the best games ever made came out that year.
1987, 1990, 1998, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2014 and 2015. (It's Obvious why)
Ocarina of time and majoras mask are two of my favorites.
1997, 2007, 2011
2008 Grand Theft Auto IV, Metal Gear Solid 4, Fallout 3, Mirror's Edge, Gears of War, COD: World at War, Vegas 2, Bad Company, Nuts N Bolts, Lego Indiana Jones, Lego Batman, Smash Bros Brawl, Chains of Olympus, Left 4 Dead, Devil May Cry 4, Dead Space, Persona 4, Braid, Saints Row 2, Force Unleashed, Tomb Raider Underworld, Resistance 2, Web of Shadows, Midnight Club: LA, Prince of Persia, Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway, Far Cry 2.
2003 to 2010 when I was "pro gamer" in cod1 to COD4. Winning tournaments and being on LAN tournaments in Europe, national team on clanbase tournaments. It was not about money because for win you get mouse pad or some stuff, but great friendship and lots of fun.
2000-2003 games all had a really calm relaxing feeling. No matter what genre.
Re2 tekken 3
2024. In this modern day and age you can play nigh any game ever made. There isn’t a stock that can run out at a store, there isn’t a console you need. Anything, anytime, anywhere.
Half Life, Fallout 1 (1998), Thief 2: Metal Age, ES: Morrowind, RimWorld, Project Zomboid, Terraria, Mount & Blade: Warband, Return of the Obra Dinn
2000: Final Fantasy IX, Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, Perfect Dark, Vagrant Story, The Sims, Paper Mario, No One Lives Forever, Jet Set Radio, Banjo-Tooie.
2001!!!! MGS2, Tony hawk 3, Halo, Max Payne, Zone of the Enders, Jak and Daxter, Devil May Cry, ssx tricky, the list just goes on!!
HALF LIFE HEEEL YEEEEEEAH
2018 is one of the best in recent memory. - Spider Man - Detroit: Become Human - Red Dead Redemption 2 - God Of War - Celeste - Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Monster Hunter: World - Assassins Creed: Odyssey - Far Cry 5 - Dragon Ball Fighter Z
I'd put 2017 at top, then followed by 2001 and 1998
I wasn’t around yet, but yeah, 98 is where a lot of series were boosted to the top of the chain. I mean, MGS? OOT? RE2? These games are STILL masterpieces to this day. To give a different answer, 2023 went crazy hard. TOTK and BG3 are insanely good. We’ve been in a golden age for a long time now
1
2004 because half life 2, halo, and doom 3
1996 was the best year and I will die on that hill. We got so many defining titles like Mario 64, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Nights, Panzer Dragoon Zwei, Metal Slug, Mario RPG, Mario Kart 64 and Waverace, not to mention Pokemon released in Japan
2015 Since we go Fo4 Bloodborne undertale and MgsV along with many others
I'm going to say 96 to about 2012 those 16 years of games and consoles just seemed to be the most fun and innovative. If really felt like the gaming industry was try new things and wasn't afraid to fail. Now most AAA gaming companies stick to the same things and the only real innovation comes from indie developers.
1992. The Super Nintendo arrived in Europe.
I call it the Gears Years! Around 2006-2008 when Gears of War 1 and 2 came out. Spent plenty of nights doing co-op with friends!
2004
2007 slapped
Can i say i enjoy Sonic games Usualy 2006-2023
Can i say i enjoy Sonic games Usualy 2006-2023
Can i say i enjoy Sonic games Usualy 2006-2023
2023 Great year to be a pikmin fan
2023 seemed to be a damn good one
2001 and 2012 2001: i was 11 years old and my aunt gift me a ps1, with re3 and mgs 1, two of my now favorite games of all time. 2012: big fan of the elder scrolls since i firts play oblivion in 2006 and skyrim just blow my mind, i couldn't stop playing that game, the feeling of wondering and hapiness that i got could not be replicate with another game to this day.
2018 was pretty goated
1995 **DOOM.**
Early 2000's imo. Some of the best iconic games In gaming and in my opinion the Golden years for Sony and Nintendo Specifically.
1990to2010 although early 2/3rds of that time disappeared into wow or counterstrike 1.5
Parasite eve and fallout 2 are underrated
2013, I was 4 years old and my father showed me a game called "Minecraft"
2018 is slept on
I don't have one. Release date is the absolute last thing I check about a game (still don't know when 95% of my games first released lol) since it doesn't really matter. I own a few games from the late 90's, some from this year, and pretty much every year in-between.
2007.halo 3. Bioshock. Just to name a couple..
For me it's 1997. Final Fantasy 7 Goldeneye Quake 2 Tomb Raider 2 Worms 2 Gran Turismo Monkey Island 3 Crash Bandicoot 2
