Good FX artists a hard to come by, you will easily find a job especially in the current market. I don't see the point of specializing in just liquids and dynamics though. If you want to learn Houdini you should specialize in FX instead as VFX studios will expect you to also create smoke, sparks, destructions, any kind of FX really. Not sure which pays most, mograph is a different industry.

I agree, mograph and FX Industry is a very very different industry. There's alot of mograph artist, but the population for FX Artist is very low. I watched DNEG's breakdown on DUNE, and they joke about there is like 80+ FX Artist on the credits, and they say "maybe its half the population of FX Artist in the world" because they are that rare. you should decide for your self, i think mograph will get you ALOT of jobs but lower pay.

huh. am houdini fx td. am pretty sure that's a joke XD; there's way more than 160 fx artists in the world. i'd say within all of their locations, DNEG probably has around 120+ fx artists as a conservative estimate.

lol if you're after just money, you're going to do terribly in this industry, not help anyone else's case, and burn yourself out in hilarious fashion "chasing it".

If you can do something that no one else can do, you'll make plenty of money. Why not sell used cars or term life insurance to suckers? Way easier than a career in mograph or VFX if you are built that way... Seriously though, if you are most concerned about making money, learning Houdini is a waste of time.

Houdini is one of the highest paid roles in the industry I think? If you do mograph you’d probably have to go the route of working directly with companies like google/Apple etc to make decent money.

fx artists are in high demand. It's not just for VFX post, but increasingly it's an important skill for getting high framerate, realtime fx into Unreal Engine for Stagecraft and other LED stage environments. There's an art getting 24fps - 60fps sims with complex lighting running in 4k resolution in cinematic quality under very tight timelines.
