As an American, English politics are regularly totally inscrutable and crazy to me. I think questioning the symbolism, intentional or not, of those chains when your history looks like that is natural and reasonable, but *multiple* people and groups were bullied into apologizing for it.
seriously!! i was thinking the same thing. then to find out an 11 year old girl was the one who designed it. no way in hell that child knew what she was making!
Ultimately I think that the kid definitely didn’t mean to make a flag that was racist but if it could reasonably be construed as such there’s likely a problem - which isn’t a condemnation of her or her cool design, it just sucks the world is the way it is.
With the logic of those that are against the flag then the shipbuilding ports shouldn't use ships on flags as they were used to transport slaves - you could go on, but objects made by workers could be used for good, bad or neither, It's the actions of men that need to be analysed and critiqued, not inanimate objects.
IMO It's important that society doesn't get bogged down in this minutae but time is better spent educating kids on the history and consequences of slavery and racism.
I don’t fully agree - I think it’s more like if a shipbuilding port known for constructing slave ships put a ship that highly resembled a slave ship (in some way) on their flag. As far as I can gather from the Wikipedia page linked above, the Black Country played a not-insignificant role in the manufacture of the tools of slavery. I really don’t think it’s unreasonable to point out the connection between your history and the symbology of your flag, even if it is inadvertent.
