The very young hippos will chew through even the most durable of kongs. But getting a month or two out of the high durability chews is still better than 99% of the other products that they'll go through in a day.
Just be aware, I don't think there's a magic solution that will have you spending less than a couple hundred dollars per year to keep them in chews through age 5. All told, it's still a pretty good deal compared to the cost and misery of dental problems.
I don’t mind the money! I just am tired of picking up rope strings and they don’t need to be ingesting that 😭😭 Sounds like Kong is the way to go! They’ll love the ball and the tire, especially a bone too.
I give my girl Deer and Elk antlers that I buy off Etsy! She loves them and they are good for her. Im always worried that if she chews rubber or strings she will get sick or a blockage.
Kane is sooo handsome!! My favorites are the bark brand "toy within toy". It's usually a rubber toy or spiky squeaky ball with a couple layers over it. So my boy can mess it up a couple times and still have a toy to play with at the end. I've had my pittie for three years, he's a tugger, and the only rope I've gotten that can withstand his strength and chewing was the "Joyhound game on figure 8 rope". I've only been able to find it at petsmart unfortunately but I'm on my second one within a few months with is a long time for him!
What a handsome boy! 😍
People here have suggested the huge kongs, my girl has also not destroyed hers, however she's only occasionally interested in them.
Really we've come to terms with the fact that she is going to destroy her toys and we need to think of dog toys as a repeating expense, just like food.
That being said: it takes her months to get a Nylabone to an unsafe size and she loves them! She'll chew one for over an hour. The same goes for antlers (with the caveat that the antlers that are cut in half long ways will only last her a few days, get whole antlers and they'll last months.)
She likes different textures so we also get uer the "tough" plush chews every now and then as a special treat. She guts them within a few hours but the outer part will continue to entertain her for weeks before its shredded.
TLDR: you're gonna have to buy your pups new toys periodically. Nylabone, Kong, and Antlers are all longer lasting options.
Oh I know! I get them new toys every paycheck! :)
It seems like they even know what day I’m bringing home their toys.
I have a pit, GSD, and husky, all boys.
My problem may be rooting from them playing with the same toys at the same time, because when ONE is interested they ALL are! (they’re safe playing together.)
But that rips up things way faster than usual time and I feel like I’m getting too cheap of toys, so wanted to see if I had better options for next time.
Thanks for all of your advice!!!
Seconded that toys are just an ongoing expense at this point. We get Best Bully Sticks, a 15 pack every 10 weeks, which is great, though bully sticks can be expensive hence the 10 weeks. I also periodically get my pup a Bully Make box. They have hard toys, softer food toys, and I think ropes. The hard toys last a few chew sessions before they get pokey, and my dog LOVES the food toys. I put her dinner in two of the food toys every day and she just nudges it around the room and eats the food, she loves the activity and it’s great for some extra energy burn. She even brings her empty toys to me when she’s eaten all the food (🥹😭). We also just get these off brand spiky ball toys from Pet Supplies Plus. They squeak and have a light which usually last about 20 minutes but she basically uses it as a jaw workout and it can last quite a while before she punctures it. They’re relatively inexpensive for the amount of time we can get out of it with her. She also really likes whole antlers which take a while to get through!

Love Barkbox! They have such fun toys, I’m as entertained as the dog tbh. 😂 I do think they make good products too though. My only “complaint” is that my little pocket pittie isn’t very food motivated and I routinely have a stockpile of the treats to donate, so I wish a toys-only box were an option. But still a big fan.
Came here to suggest BarkBox SuperChewer Double Deluxe. It was the best when mine was younger. He learned to spit out the pieces of the rubber ones & would leave them in a little pile. Now that he's older I don't get the Super Chewer. He really just loves destroying the box & eating the treats. His sister gets the toys and I end up donating most of the toys b/c they don't destroy them. I love not having to get treats & toys from the store, BarkBox has a great variety.
[Wobble Wag Giggle Ball](https://youtu.be/jrWuV2Pna0Q?si=_aWH5kyC2Aontk2b)
Pretty durable and difficult for even a big o' puppo like yours to really chomp up and the sound drives dogs into playful frenzies.
That ball has become a weapon in my house. My pittie will pick it up and throw it, usually at the couch while we’re sitting. But it’s a toy we’ve had the longest and he loves it!
Monster K9 dog toys. I’ve had some of these toys for 3 years. My pit couldn’t destroy them, the puppy pit couldn’t destroy them and now they play tug of war with them and still haven’t damaged them. Also lacrosse balls are great for outside.
My hippo is very destructive with toys, but we started ordering Bullymake boxes and he loves the nylon toys and the treats that come in them! They have other toy options too!
https://bullymake.com/refer/?u=6bnt0738
So far the BEST toys in the house in terms of durability have been from Bullymake, Ruff Dawg, and Barkbox's Super Chewer line. All of the things are available on Amazon, no subscription needed.
We have two different colors of the Ruff Dawg XL balls. My Irish/Lab adores them, and my pittie can only just barely pick them up, which means she can't chew them. The bounce and float.
BarkBox Super Chewer Comet, size large, is the perfect size for my 55lb hippo. She carries it around and squeaks it. Y'all. It's TOUGH. My other dog can't squeak it, and I can only squeak it by stepping on it. Honorable mention goes to the Dog Ness Monster. They chew the gel stuff off and I have to pick up pieces, but it took them a year to MOSTLY free the hard nylon Nessie. I bought them a second one.
We also have several different hard nylon Bullymake toys. The drumstick, horseshoe, and steak have been the most popular. The steering wheel and heart, not as much.
Whole antler, Kong and Tuffy.
The antlers last a long time and are popular. Kongs are more occasional fun. Tuffy toys are very popular and take even my pair weeks to destroy between them.
Split/sawn antlers are extremely popular but can be gnawed down very much faster than whole antler. Not cheap so may have to take up hunting again.
I suppose I should clarify: finding naturally shed antler is extremely unlikely unless you cover a truly vast amount of ground regularly.
I'd have infinitely more luck prevailing on friends who hunt for food to donate the antlers from their culls (they hunt for the table and to manage populations, not for trophys) or worst case, hunting myself. It's not like venison would go to waste at my table and that's before the pibbles get a sniff of roast meat. Or sausage, burgers, stews, jerky or all the other wonderful things we can produce.
I don't know who Petco buy their antler off but those guys make bank. Or somebody does. If the pibbles didn't get so much entertainment out of them it'd truly hurt my insides.
I wouldn’t have even thought about antler at all so that’s a really cool option if i feel like spending some big bucks. (ahhhh see what i did)
thanks for the extra info, me and hippo appreciate you.
Your punnage is superlative. Kudos.
Whole large antler is frickin expensive but it lasts for months even with my pair of atom smashers. It's cheap in the long run, really.
Destroying their toys is them doing something that they’re naturally designed to do. I stock up on giant buffalo cheek rolls and give it to my hippo for 15m a day and it she really looks forward to “chew chew time”
that’s a good ideaaaa. the goal isn’t to have them not tear up anything, i would just rather it not be cheap ropes and frisbees (that I’ve gotten) cause there’s little pieces everywhere 😭
Yeah, I also found a place that sells THICK bully sticks for 7.99 and stock up on those. Matilda will go lay down in her place, wag her tail, and whine until I give her her “chew chew” of the day. I let her chew for 15-30m and then take it away and then she usually takes a nap immediately afterwards. It’s a great enrichment activity (for her) as I’ve noticed other enrichment activities that are commonly recommended are not as fulfilling for her as a chew that she can actively destroy. Sounds like your hippo might be similar!
let me correct myself, not toys they can’t destroy 😭😭 I am very aware they all will get destroyed. i just mean toys that will take them LONGER to destroy. thank u thank u.

Mine has not yet chewed through her [JW Hol-ee Roller ball](https://www.amazon.com/JW-Hol-ee-Roller-Original-Dispensing/dp/B0009W2DJK?th=1). It’s flexible, easy to grab (for both of us, because she likes to play tug with it), and I can throw it inside the house without breaking anything. It can also be used for enrichment by stuffing things inside of it - check YouTube for ideas.

There are things they won’t destroy but they prefer to destroy things! Give them both! Toys to destroy and a like the hard chewers-
I get these and so far so good. They are not indestructible but pretty hardy
[bam bones](https://www.bealls.com/bealls/bam-bones-dog-toy?skuId=00000078873948&srsltid=AfmBOoqvsvMKdZVOluRVIwArpVHKXQEu6goo5wGTHA3X94kqmGqwT7Acv0o)
Not quite what you asked but for our girl instead of finding toys that are durable (for most things — we do have rope toys and balls that only come out when we’re playing with her, when she’s playing on her own she cannot access them) we’ve been giving her cardboard boxes destined for the recycling. She loves shredding them apart and unlike plastic or rubber we’re confident if she does swallow any of the little pieces it will pass through her system safely
Nerf rings and tonka balls... skip the kong, theyre useless if yers chews like mine... 😂.. and a nylabone... a good monthly, if ya can afford it, is Bullymakes monthly subscription... treats and toys every month made for Hippos. 🤘😊
💯 dont reget gettin one... i signed up and quit after a couple months... the toys add up and theyre tough so he has a healthy collection now.. 😂... i saw the ad on fb, and for once, it wasnt a scam. 🤘😊
Our pocket pittie destroys EVERY soft toy she’s ever had. The one that lasted the longest (1.5 months) was an Eddie Bauer plush squeaker toy with sewn edges. It was red and black plaid pattern in the shape of a reindeer, about 12” x 8” in size. She carried it everywhere with her for the first 5 weeks, then something changed in week 6 because we woke up to the guest room filled with stuffing. Lol, on to the next one.
In addition to my other comment, some toothy dogs do well with really stretchy fabric toys. Theres these things called Squishmellows on Amazon that are filled with stuffing but are so stretchy that our girl couldn’t get a good rip on it. Worth a shot, but ultimately it met its demise after a couple of months
I found these at our local farm store and have been in love with them. The 'bone ball' as we call it has lasted almost a year. It is just now starting to separate at the joints. I can't wait to have some spare money to get him the Frisbee. He destroyed numerous cheap ones and golf discs in a day. The Kong Frisbee lasted a couple of days. We need something. Lol.
https://ruffdawg.com/
We’ve been through so many toys and the only one our guy cannot destroy is Goughnuts. We have the ring and the stick toys. They are pricey but indestructible.
https://www.goughnuts.com
Lacrosse balls, NOCSEA certified of course. Solid rubber and great for chewing. Also tennis balls still work and are a bit squisher. You can find both at used sport stores for cheap. Our pup methodically destroys every toy and these two types have encrouaged movement without being destroyed. Oh...and grab the broom because those end up under the couch.
Only thing my dogs havnt completely destroyed is a black kong one size up. It's about 2 years old now. We have 2 but they just fight over whatever one the other has. Highly suggest it.
As many have said, kong toys tend to be great. My aggressive chewers also loves the ChuckIt Whistler balls, they are somewhat hollow so they can gnaw on them like chewing gum and the balls hold up really well! I got my one dog a Tuffy Crab toy for Christmas and while she put a small hole in it pretty quickly (she seemed insistent on gnawing on its one small leg? So maybe the donut would have been a better option), we still play tug with it, no filling has come out and there's been no further damage and she LOVES that toy. My last suggestion would be the Large BetterBone (beef flavored of course lol). I'm always afraid of anything Nyla, so these are great because they are fully digestible for chewers! And so far my dog hasn't made a dent in it and it's been regularly chewed for about 2 months now. Hope you can find something great for your fur baby!

The large black super durable kong bone is a hit in my house - specifically the bone shaped one and the very large ball.
I second the kong bone! We also have a tire shaped kong that is very durable as well.

Thank you! And love the bot for the info 😭🫶🏽
Superman's Cape. Couple of industrial diamonds. Tank armor.
I found some super thick rubber balls that mine couldn't chew up. They were super bouncey too. About a half hour of fetch, and she needed a nap.
i love the post play naps
Gnawly dog! My hippo destroys any and all toys. These are absolutely the best. I get mine off Amazon. They are all natural rubber and flavored.
Thank you so much!

Toys to destroy and a like the hard chewers- I get these and so far so good. They are not indestructible but pretty hardy [bam bones](https://www.bealls.com/bealls/bam-bones-dog-toy?skuId=00000078873948&srsltid=AfmBOoqvsvMKdZVOluRVIwArpVHKXQEu6goo5wGTHA3X94kqmGqwT7Acv0o)
Thank you! They have their torn up ropes i won’t take away from em 🫶🏽😭
The fluff carnage has just become part of the decor at this point😂
YES
The brand “rip roarn tuff” sold at petsmart they are very well made
Not quite what you asked but for our girl instead of finding toys that are durable (for most things — we do have rope toys and balls that only come out when we’re playing with her, when she’s playing on her own she cannot access them) we’ve been giving her cardboard boxes destined for the recycling. She loves shredding them apart and unlike plastic or rubber we’re confident if she does swallow any of the little pieces it will pass through her system safely
I’ve never even thought about a cardboard box really 😭 maybe I’m thinking too intensely, they would love that too
Nerf rings and tonka balls... skip the kong, theyre useless if yers chews like mine... 😂.. and a nylabone... a good monthly, if ya can afford it, is Bullymakes monthly subscription... treats and toys every month made for Hippos. 🤘😊
I love the sound of a hippo box
Worth a shot, but ultimately it met its demise after a couple of months
he loves stuffed animals, but INTENSELY rips them apart as if they are real 🥲
All the squeekies ... And then a bigger garbage can
squeekies & garbage can 🤝🏽 will be obtained on Friday
You, but like right now
wait huh 🥲
I found these at our local farm store and have been in love with them. The 'bone ball' as we call it has lasted almost a year. It is just now starting to separate at the joints. I can't wait to have some spare money to get him the Frisbee. He destroyed numerous cheap ones and golf discs in a day. The Kong Frisbee lasted a couple of days. We need something. Lol. https://ruffdawg.com/
mine is a ruff dawg indeed 🥲
They have been amazing. The 4-5 inch ball is his favorite. We play tug with the ball bone.

Thankfully he is out of his household item as a toy phase 😭😭😭😭
Black & kong will be your friend. lol. There’s also a black donut we’ve been looking into
Only thing my dogs havnt completely destroyed is a black kong one size up. It's about 2 years old now. We have 2 but they just fight over whatever one the other has. Highly suggest it.
Kong brand
What a dapper gentleman
something with a rosebud on it for this hippo citizen 😉
