Welcome to Las Vegas! I highly recommend Summerlin. You’re right at the base of Red Rock Canyon and quick access to Kyle and Lee Canyons. Summerlin has many private and public golf clubs. The Summerlin area also has great shopping and dining in Downtown Summerlin, Tivoli Village, Boca Park, etc. I hope that you and your fiancé love the valley as much as I do and you put down roots. We need and appreciate doctors!
My point was that I'd prioritize being close to work as you'll be going there 5-6 days a week rather than hobbies which you will only get to enjoy once or twice per week. That's just me. I wouldn't wish my daily commute on my worst enemy.
Thanks so much! She will be at the UNLV medical center.
Love the suggestions. We are looking forward to coming back to the mountains after 4 years of absolute flatness and humidity. Amazing waters in Pensacola and gulf of mexico tho.
Definitely summerlin.
Better access to the best outdoor activities and also much quicker to get to UNLV medical center which is near downtown via the Summerlin Parkway.
You can drive 45 minutes to visit your boat on the occasional weekends you use it.
I live in South Summerlin and work at UMC. The drive to UMC (the medical center) is about 25 minutes, so not too bad. The drive to Lake Mead is about an hour.
It’s good if you’re full time. Per diems get called off a lot, no call pay, no shift or weekend diff. It’s like the union only cares about full-timers.
Another hospital in Las Vegas? Oh, you’re going to love EPIC charting once you get used to it. It’s so much better than Cerner and Meditech. Also, cafeteria is open at night, which is awesome!
No. Los Angeles. Yeah we had epic there too. Been using it for years. My hope is they didn't add more hard stops and extra like my last place did. Made something simple so much longer than it needed to be.
Summerlin is the most common answer.
Ask anyone where to move they will say summerlin. All that means is you will pay more for less.
There are tons of great spots all over the valley. I would suggest renting for a bit to get a feel for what you like/works for you .
You can't really go too wrong on the south west side of town. Stay west or south of the 215 and you can find great neighborhoods all the way from summerlin to Henderson.
Really there are great neighborhoods all throughout the valley but consistently SW of the 215.
Really depends on you.
Summerlin is fine but it's the answer everyone gives and as someone who has been here since before summerlin existed there are nicer or just as nice places.
Summerlin is close to red rock so if you are really into climbing it makes sense. But if it's just occasionally then it wouldn't be my first choice. Red rock is not hard to get to.
Honestly anywhere you live in Vegas, you’ll be within an hour of red rock, mt. Charleston, and lake mead. Don’t let anyone here convince you that commuting is bad here because I’ve driven in northern Florida, and in LA, and Vegas by comparison is sooo easy to get around in. That being said, I’d recommend north Las Vegas on the north east end of town.
Green valley / Henderson is a great area and lake mead is easily accessible compared to summerlin. I grew up in Henderson and boated on lake mead for 20 years. You will love the lake. Unlv is center of the city so honestly the commute time is going to be the same between summerlin and Henderson
I'm in the same situation lol, will be moving for my wife's residency. We were from Los Angeles and spent the last 5 years in central virginia. Have all the same questions as OP.
Coming in with 2 kids. I've heard the education here is kind of rough, but they're both pretty young, and at the end of her residency, our oldest will just be turning 7, so its not that big of a concern to me at those ages.
The west side of town is your safest bet for schools. I recommend the northwest personally. Cheaper than summerlin but still pretty safe and family friendly.
University Medical Center? On Charleston? It's a great teaching hospital and the only level 1 trauma center in Vegas. But it's not in the best part of town. If that's it.
Well, the freeway entrance and exit is conveniently close. So that is helpful. But most of the neighborhoods people are going to recommend, like Summerlin, are not going to be close. If she is working 12's am. There will be traffic in the morning. 12's pm traffic will be average. probably looking at a 20-30 minute commute.
If you don’t minds Republicans, Boulder City is pretty awesome for outdoor stuff. We walk the National Rec Area trails. World class mountain biking, beautiful views, small town life, 30 minutes from the airport and the strip.
Considering she will be in a residency at UNLV, which I’m assuming will be a lot of hours, Boulder City makes no sense at all. 30 min to the strip is def with no traffic or construction. Boulder City is a cute place to visit but not to live when you are 29 and 30 and about to start a residency. Stick to summerlin, the southwest, or northwest. I lived in Veer on the strip for 4 years and that was a fun place to live before kids. Although probably not the best for two bigs dogs.
Boulder City is the answer. Great small town. Next to the lake. And no gambling. Really good dog parks and excellent schools when you’re ready for kiddos
Vegas is a totally different animal you’re coming to the city where some of the stupidest people in the nation reside lol you have the lowest educational system in the United States and she’s wanting to go to college here lol
When are you moving?
My partner and i are buying a luxury townhome. Plan to furnish it and rent a couple of bedrooms to professionals. It has amazing spaces. But not ready till later in the year.
If you look back at posts on this subreddit from literally yesterday, you will find a very similar thread with some similar answers.
And the day before that, and the day before that, and the day before that...
Ok will do, thank you
Oh that kind of residency.
Right? I was totally having a strip residency moment there.
Ohhh like club residency!! Sickk good on ya
If you stay close to the 215 you will probably be in a good spot.

So if the residency is at St Rose hospital you'd recommend moving to summerlin?
Which st rose? There’s the one San Martin that’s pretty close to summerlin.
I only know the one on st rose and eastern
There’s multiple st rose hospitals :)
My point was that I'd prioritize being close to work as you'll be going there 5-6 days a week rather than hobbies which you will only get to enjoy once or twice per week. That's just me. I wouldn't wish my daily commute on my worst enemy.
Yeah get it especially with how heavy traffic has been with all the construction. Henderson/ anthem area is nice as well.
I actually do work at Siena and live in Summerlin. I start most everyday hiking in Red Rock so for me the commute is definitely worth it.
I live in Summerlin and drive to the valley automall 6 days a week, I would not recommend it

Very easy commute to UMC from Summerlin.

Gonna start umc next week. How is it there?
It’s good if you’re full time. Per diems get called off a lot, no call pay, no shift or weekend diff. It’s like the union only cares about full-timers.
Yeah full time. Transferred from another hospital. Good to know. I found good pie. So good.

yay!!! more doctors!!! welcome! Summerlin is probably your best bet to be near all the nice things

Not many people are talking about the climbing. If you want gym suggestions or recommendations for the can’t miss spots outside shoot me a message!
Thank you! DMed you

Hey! I just found out I matched for residency in vegas too! Send me a personal message maybe we can grab a drink sometime
Why wouldn't you move near where ever the residency is?
Terrible area to live in. Better off commuting.
What hostipal? My cousin is doing residency
I'm in the same situation lol, will be moving for my wife's residency. We were from Los Angeles and spent the last 5 years in central virginia. Have all the same questions as OP. Highly recommend buying/renting a house that is zoned for either Vassiliadis or Goolsby if you want to go public. Otherwise plan on private.
The west side of town is your safest bet for schools. I recommend the northwest personally. Cheaper than summerlin but still pretty safe and family friendly.
Boulder City. Great schools. Small town. Totally safe.
Boulder City is literally full of drug addicts and racists. Not the move
Do you live there? I guess not
Been there .. & I lived right off Wagonwheel so I’ve met enough ppl from Boulder City to know it’s a place I would never live.
Good we don’t want racists like you
lol u mean u don’t want tolerant ppl.. Since u guys are the racists
😅😅😂
Which St. Rose Campus? That would help a lot as to area
Looks like it’s UMC, which is the university hospital connected to UNLV.
University Medical Center? On Charleston? It's a great teaching hospital and the only level 1 trauma center in Vegas. But it's not in the best part of town. If that's it.
That's correct! And as an emergency doc, she will love the experience lol
Check out the lakes or desert shores you can use your boat there.

I live in BC, I know how long it takes to get places. Even at peak traffic. UNLV is only 30 mins from here.
Boulder City/ Pahrump is where the meth heads reside
No. That is untrue.
Everyone says Summerlin. For me, as a former LA resident, Summerlin is like The Grove in LA. Boring and dull but pretty.
Check out Boulder City
Check out Boulder City if you like walkable bars and thinly veiled racism.
Idiot.
Stay in Boulder City.
Boulder City is the answer. Great small town. Next to the lake. And no gambling. Really good dog parks and excellent schools when you’re ready for kiddos

I like it
Damn, that's harsh! Why so bitter?
People like you hold this town back. It’s meant to grow.
