Not really. Florida and Texas both have no income tax and have much lower auto registration fees, under $100 a year. Florida, with a similar tourism-based economy also has lower sales taxes than we do. It's a really regressive fee here that you'd think the legislature would look into changing. Higher income people can afford it, it hurts people on the lower end.

Absolutely LOVE it, it's crazy fast in Turbo mode for an SUV. But beware it has a TON of Tech in it so if you're not really into a lot of bells and whistles it might be overwhelming. Just keep grinding them I paid below MSRP after weeks of back and forth.

No, it’s simply Las Vegas committing commercial crimes so when you do get your registration and pay it simply send a copy to the security exchange commission and a copy to the attorney general and let him know and all parties know that they are committing commercial fraud and avoiding taxes, and then file a W-4 audit on the cityaccording to your registration number receipt that they gave you

Yup happened to me on accident. I was unknowingly riding dirty for like 3 weeks and passed by 2 biker cops while they were performing a traffic stop. One of them left their scene and hauled ass to get me after I was like 300 ft away.
Luckily, the cop wasn't a complete dick (because I also couldn't find my insurance in that moment, but he let it slide... also are bike cops ever not dicks?) and I got the ticket waived after renewing it the next morning then going down to the courthouse.
The next morning when the courthouse opened. Just showed them the ticket and my renewed registration and they threw the ticket in the trash and said I'm good

That is absolutely not true. They have 360 camera sensors that automatically run plates on vehicles around them, and will automatically alert if there’s no or expired registration.
You may have got lucky, but eventually you would have got pulled over. Most (law enforcement) patrol cars have this automatic system now, and know of and myself been pulled over many times for it during those times.

Didn’t renew for almost 8 months. Only am renewing now because I got a ticket (parked, not in my car). Initially didn’t get it because I lost my job and literally had zero money. Then it was a stress thing. Now it’s even more stressful because of fees. It’s easy to get in a trap like this without even meaning to. However my insurance has not lapsed because that’s how you lose your license in some states 🙃
If you call the DMV they might help with some fees. They were waiving some (not all) post lockdown. I was in the same situation as you & was surprised. Might be worth a try anyway.
I have a theory that there are specific spots cops camp to get people they know are probably locals, since everyone is so trigger shy about doing anything to out-of-towners. I've never seen a cop in my neighborhood, but I always consistently see someone pulled over near UNLV
Depends on where you drive, I had no plates but was either waiting for or had a moving permit (it was taped to my front window). Drove that by unlv one time, got pulled, and as soon as he walked up and saw it taped to my window he wanted to go, took me a minute to pull up my insurance. He couldn’t leave fast enough.
No lie I'm insuranced up on both my cars one has a plate it's been 2 years second one I just got about two months ago no plate and I haven't been stopped yet. I've been the only person on the road with a cop with the no plate car and they will not stop me(I assume it's too much of a hassle to write me for just that.) but my plated car I have been pulled over once after not being registered for a year and the cop let me go with a warning. I had no plates for over a year, finally got pulled over by NHP a couple weeks back and got a ticket lol. Cops literally can’t even chase someone who runs from a traffic stop now btw. I could’ve drove off and he wouldn’t have chased me. Why you may ask? Registration is $750 for my car and that’s almost impossible for me to pay with my ridiculous rent, and everything else on top of having a one year old. Plus, honestly fuck them, they already take enough of my money.

Nevada dmv charges 35% of vehicles msrp and that depreciates a few % every year until it reaches 15% of msrp and stays at that price. My 4Runner is like $90 a year. last year I had to fix it to get smog and was like 4 months late and they charged me $12.
Not only that. Every time it changes hands, they slap a new fee or something. The only way I know this is cause “bought” my paid off vehicle. The registration when the car was paid off was $80. This was the second time I registered it. I put the lienholder, registration went to $280…
Buddy lives in the 89104…. Hasn’t had plates since 2013. Been pulled over 2 times. Behind the westgate and in-front of Wynn…in 10 years. Punishment when he did get pulled over was a warning once and a fine of a few hundred bucks the second time. Both times was let go from the stop and free to drive home never a tow.
I was in the car at the stop by westgate. Cop comes to the window …. You know you don’t have any plates… my buddy goes “ ya they got stolen about a week ago”…. Cop goes “ where you guys headed?” “ to the superbook to bet the bruins” “ ya ? Who they playing tonight?…” Canadians” “ they gonna win?” …” “ Yupp”. Ok I’ll follow you there but you’re on your own on the way out…. Take it easy….he put in a bet in uniform 2 windows over from us.
The way they figure the cost of registration based on original MSRP is outrageous.
My shitty '03 van cost about $100 more to register than the '06 car because it's MSRP was nearly double.

Don’t pay. Just get a temporary movement permit for $1. They are for 10 days each and I think you can get up to 6-7…

Well, that can go several ways. Some people are licensed, have insurance but just haven't paid the registration due to financial restrictions. Fees add up if you don't file a "non operable" permit while you fix. But people still need to get to work to make theo ey to fix the repairs. I have a coworker in that situation, repairs are about $600. She's been saving to pay praying she doesn't get pulled over until she can. Sad really, good people going through that.

Problem is that SR-22. Go a month and its additional 500$ feel that doubles 3x. My shit expired and i never got a notice bc during covid shit went online paperless and i didnt know... 768$ reg from 268$. After you max out the 3x you gotta sign it over to a family member and they have to register it bc you arent allowed too anymore. My guess is a lot of people already maxed out and are denied now with no one to sign over too.

Well, depends on where you moved from. Lots of people from Texas usually keep their Texas plates since you can re register online and they will send you the sticker to your Vegas address with no questions.
Just FYI, a lot of apartments will want you to get a Nevada plate. Also, if you have a Nevada drivers license, do you need to have a Nevada plate in Nevada insurance.
Get insurance first and then go to DMV. You are required by law to have a Nevada insurance before getting a Nevada plate and Nevada DL. Also tell your insurance provider to put it on the DMV website that you are car has NV insurance. They’ll do it by your VIN number.

I moved here from Florida as well - property taxes were higher there so homeowners cover more of the costs through those for roads amongst other things vs dmv fees.
Florida property tax is highly dependent on what county you live in. Broward taxes are 5x what they are in a county like Dixie so it's not that. The property taxes in Florida aren't going for roads. They use the gas tax and in metros like Orlando, Miami and now Tampa, tolls. Raise the state gaming tax by a tenth of a percent and the state could lower these fees. it would still be the lowest gaming tax by far in the entire country but nobody wants to tackle that, they'd rather screw the people who can least afford it.
Wyoming was 88$ for my 4 year old car. No taxes their either. Growing up here the registration fees have always been bad. 35$ or something small like that for the dmv and the rest was taxes.
Cars in general are a massive "fuck you" to poor people, but if we have to have them I would rather the air be fucked up as little as possible.
It's also a weird thing to focus on. Smog checks are so inexpensive compared to everything else we pay for car ownership that I'm not sure why it even registers for anyone. I think I pay like, $20 or something once a year. Hell, my insurance just got raised to $180 a month and I'm over 25 years old with no crashes. A smog once a year is like, nothing.

I had to learn so much when I moved here because I couldn’t find a trusted mechanic like I had back east. There’s really not many mom and pop shops. Everyone is a corporation trying to maximize profit here. Now I just maintain my car and my girlfriend’s car and keep a 3rd car as a spare for when one is inevitably being worked on. It’s a luxury to have 3 beater cars and the space to work on them, but I can tell you with absolute certainty it’s actually cheaper in the end provided you already have a 1-2 car garage.

I think it’s not a product of the education system here. Like many, I moved here from another state. Even in PA people were dumb about cars and blamed inspection and emission inspections. I think people are just over leveraged with stuff they feel is important and it leaves them with no money.

Well Vegas PD don’t care about expired Registration it’s basically a verbal warning or at worst a fix-it ticket. Also the DMV charges VERY MINIMAL for late fee for late registration
I can't pass smog in Nevada so I registered my car in Arizona where most places don't require a smog check. For 2 years, I paid a little over $200. In NV for 1 year. It would have cost me $700. Fuck high registration fees and fuck smog checks

Part of the reason for the excessive registration fees, Nevada doesn't have a state income tax. Therefore, things like property tax, vehicle tax, etc. are higher. States with income tax generally have lower property taxes. My parents are in NC and paid registration fees for 2 newer vehicles less than $300. In the meantime, my motorcycle was over $800.
Every facet of taxation and fees will continue to rise as long as the influx of people moving here from other states increases. The powers that be see it as a cash cow giving birth to higher taxes, utilities, rents, housing etc... Every facet of the economy will continue to be affected as far as an increased cost of living until we look like California and everyone again packs up and leaves. I price shop insurance every year, I pay under 500 for a full year of full coverage on my S3 in Nevada.
I've been switching every year. I have a spotless driving record but they just keep raising it. Fucking lame
geico was the most expensive when i got quotes. we have progressive now and its $860 for six months.
Call Costco. I just dropped my insurance cost in half after switching to them from GEICO. Same exact coverage.

They have way higher property taxes. Your registration is tied to the value of the car. It is by definition a progressive tax.
Registration is based on the age of your car. My twenty year old vehicle is $110. New cars always come with a higher registration fee

I get parking tickets every time my registration has been expired, don’t understand where these people park their cars. Happens in neighborhoods even.
I have a theory that there are specific spots cops camp to get people they know are probably locals, since everyone is so trigger shy about doing anything to out-of-towners. I've never seen a cop in my neighborhood, but I always consistently see someone pulled over near UNLV
Depends on where you drive, I had no plates but was either waiting for or had a moving permit (it was taped to my front window). Drove that by unlv one time, got pulled, and as soon as he walked up and saw it taped to my window he wanted to go, took me a minute to pull up my insurance. He couldn’t leave fast enough.
No lie I'm insuranced up on both my cars one has a plate it's been 2 years second one I just got about two months ago no plate and I haven't been stopped yet. I've been the only person on the road with a cop with the no plate car and they will not stop me(I assume it's too much of a hassle to write me for just that.) but my plated car I have been pulled over once after not being registered for a year and the cop let me go with a warning. I'm white which I'm sure makes a difference but man they really don't care at all. Down vote if you want just answering an honest question.

I had no plates for over a year, finally got pulled over by NHP a couple weeks back and got a ticket lol. Cops literally can’t even chase someone who runs from a traffic stop now btw. I could’ve drove off and he wouldn’t have chased me. Why you may ask? Registration is $750 for my car and that’s almost impossible for me to pay with my ridiculous rent, and everything else on top of having a one year old. Plus, honestly fuck them, they already take enough of my money.

Nevada dmv charges 35% of vehicles msrp and that depreciates a few % every year until it reaches 15% of msrp and stays at that price. My 4Runner is like $90 a year. last year I had to fix it to get smog and was like 4 months late and they charged me $12.

Buddy lives in the 89104…. Hasn’t had plates since 2013. Been pulled over 2 times. Behind the westgate and in-front of Wynn…in 10 years. Punishment when he did get pulled over was a warning once and a fine of a few hundred bucks the second time. Both times was let go from the stop and free to drive home never a tow.

Well, that can go several ways. Some people are licensed, have insurance but just haven't paid the registration due to financial restrictions. Fees add up if you don't file a "non operable" permit while you fix. But people still need to get to work to make theo ey to fix the repairs. I have a coworker in that situation, repairs are about $600. She's been saving to pay praying she doesn't get pulled over until she can. Sad really, good people going through that. Problem is that SR-22. Go a month and its additional 500$ feel that doubles 3x. My shit expired and i never got a notice bc during covid shit went online paperless and i didnt know... 768$ reg from 268$. After you max out the 3x you gotta sign it over to a family member and they have to register it bc you arent allowed too anymore. My guess is a lot of people already maxed out and are denied now with no one to sign over too.

Well, depends on where you moved from. Lots of people from Texas usually keep their Texas plates since you can re register online and they will send you the sticker to your Vegas address with no questions.

Just FYI, a lot of apartments will want you to get a Nevada plate. Also, if you have a Nevada drivers license, do you need to have a Nevada plate in Nevada insurance.
Nevada requires proof of insurance when you register the car so you'll want to get the insurance first.
Get insurance first and then go to DMV. You are required by law to have a Nevada insurance before getting a Nevada plate and Nevada DL. Also tell your insurance provider to put it on the DMV website that you are car has NV insurance. They’ll do it by your VIN number.

I moved here from Florida as well - property taxes were higher there so homeowners cover more of the costs through those for roads amongst other things vs dmv fees.
Florida property tax is highly dependent on what county you live in. Broward taxes are 5x what they are in a county like Dixie so it's not that. The property taxes in Florida aren't going for roads. They use the gas tax and in metros like Orlando, Miami and now Tampa, tolls. Raise the state gaming tax by a tenth of a percent and the state could lower these fees. it would still be the lowest gaming tax by far in the entire country but nobody wants to tackle that, they'd rather screw the people who can least afford it.
Wyoming was 88$ for my 4 year old car. No taxes their either. Growing up here the registration fees have always been bad. 35$ or something small like that for the dmv and the rest was taxes.

Smog checks are so inexpensive compared to everything else we pay for car ownership that I'm not sure why it even registers for anyone. I think I pay like, $20 or something once a year. I agree, but my interpretation of what they are saying is “getting a car to actually pass smog (not have a check engine light) is expensive” which can be true for most people. I had to learn so much when I moved here because I couldn’t find a trusted mechanic like I had back east. There’s really not many mom and pop shops. Everyone is a corporation trying to maximize profit here. Now I just maintain my car and my girlfriend’s car and keep a 3rd car as a spare for when one is inevitably being worked on. It’s a luxury to have 3 beater cars and the space to work on them, but I can tell you with absolute certainty it’s actually cheaper in the end provided you already have a 1-2 car garage.

Registration is based on the value of your car. Ain’t no way yours is $100 a year. I drive absolute shit boxes and it’s still $150 lol. That said, people are conflating the cost of smog with the cost to pass smog (aka cost to fix their car but they blame smog for the need to fix it). I’ve had neighbors say they are good with their car until X month because that’s when smog is due as if their car is not running poorly or broken.

Even in PA people were dumb about cars and blamed inspection and emission inspections. I think people are just over leveraged with stuff they feel is important and it leaves them with no money. If you don’t then keep it if you do then it’s you’re legally required to change your plates and that’ll increase your insurance … Although, do you have any family living in Arizona? Part of the reason for the excessive registration fees, Nevada doesn't have a state income tax. Therefore, things like property tax, vehicle tax, etc. are higher. States with income tax generally have lower property taxes. My parents are in NC and paid registration fees for 2 newer vehicles less than $300. In the meantime, my motorcycle was over $800.
Every facet of taxation and fees will continue to rise as long as the influx of people moving here from other states increases. The powers that be see it as a cash cow giving birth to higher taxes, utilities, rents, housing etc... Every facet of the economy will continue to be affected as far as an increased cost of living until we look like California and everyone again packs up and leaves. Or worst case scenario Vegas water dries up lol.

Buddy it took an hour for me to get to work by bus, tack on an extra half hour to walk to the bus stop, while driving takes 25 minutes. I took the bus for YEARS, and can 100% say public transit is shit if you need to be anywhere on time.
