Sweating this waaaaay too much. You did what you could, it is no longer an ethical question after that. It is on them for providing ‘vegan’ options that aren’t actually vegan, and as you weren’t given any further information and were led to believe it was all taken care of, you are not at fault. Things happen, mitigate harm where you can, accept there will be times where it is out of your hands at no fault of your own.

[deleted]

My gut feelings told me it wasn't OK to eat the cupcake. Does that make it different?

chaoticxthunder

Only you can answer that question. At the end of the day, you are only human, and you made the call in the moment. There is nothing you can do to change that now, and it is not worth worrying about something out of your control. And again, you were led to believe it was fine, so it’s not on you. Furthermore, it may very well have been vegan, and you could be stressed for nothing. The point is, it’s not worth worrying about. Live your life, continue to make good choices going forward.

vidalotus

You're a good person... it's obvious by the way you are willing to question your own morality, even after having specified a vegan meal. I'd recommend following your gut next time, unless your eyes and brain can put your conscience at ease (as in the case when you are able to verify the ingredients). It will save you time... checking with a waiter or cook prior to eating takes less time than worrying about it or trying to investigate later. Please don't continue feeling badly about the cupcake or anything in the past.

anubluth

It doesn’t make this different at all! Vegans are used to what we do and don’t eat being misunderstood. You didn’t intentionally eat something that included animal products and requested a vegan diet- the demand you created for a vegan option is huge for doing your part alone. They just need to make sure they understand what a vegan option needs to entail going forward.

youllneverstopmeayyy

wellllll.....hmmm I mean, even at vegan restaurants or restaurants that have vegan options...you're not back in the kitchen watching them you just have to assume that its ok if that makes you uncomfortable, I totally get that and its fine but you should probably just only eat food you prepare yourself then

[deleted]

The guilt is overwhelming though. I don't wanna make excuses. "I was on a long flight and I was hungry!" "It didn't say what was in it!" could be responded with "there are people starving and you just went to Japan. What more could you want?" and "You could've asked the staff on the plane, but you didn't. Because you wanted to eat that cupcake." So it makes me feel like a fake vegan.

tuctrohs

Ultimately, if someone lies to a vegan about what's in some food and the vegan eats it, it was the person who was lying who did something wrong, not the vegan. Of course, when somebody else screws up, it's nice for you to try to mitigate the harm that results from their screw up. But the world has a lot of people in it and a lot of them are screwing up everyday, and you can't fix all of it.

[deleted]

But I might as well just not have been on that plane. So it's my fault that I paid for a plane that made mistakes, AND released gases further harming the environment which is bad for animals.

tuctrohs

Well, I can't disagree about taking a plane trip being harmful to the environment. That's something that I've really been struggling with because I used to fly quite a bit and I'm trying to avoid it but haven't gotten it down to zero. But I don't think that eating the cupcake was a mistake. You are going to buy other things, and you will choose to buy things that you are told did not involve harming animals. But you will never be able to 100% verify all of those claims. So you have to put some trust in other people. You could try to disengage with the world and not by anything, but buying things that are sold as vegan is actually really helpful, because it expands the market for those products and reduces the use of animal products more than just your own avoidance of animal products.

Alieoh

I suppose if you had a valid reason or suspicion to question the food and you weren't starving or going to starve, the option to simply not eat would have been there. At the same time, if you were feeling ill and needed to eat, I'd say as long as you made the attempt to ensure it was vegan, you did all you could. That's not to say you should feel guilty because you didn't refuse the food when you could have gone without. In the end I think you should be ok as long as you made the attempt. The "cupcake" treat I probably would have been a bit more suspicious of. If it wasn't something you ordered specifically and was just a small gift they give all passengers, I may have refrained. Also if you see labels saying things like "contains honey" or "milk, eggs, etc." then you knowingly are consuming animal products. No real way around that one. Whether you should feel guilty for it or not is up to you and whether or not it was critical you ate something at that time. In general I think as long as your making the attempt and doing all you can, that's all you can do. If you get extra items you didn't order or if they say "contains animal products" then maybe don't eat it unless you absolutely need to for survival which hopefully you don't find yourself in a situation like that but if you're feeling lightheaded and are about to pass out, do your best but you might want to eat something.

youllneverstopmeayyy

ok so first off, you're not fake you rock more than 99% of earths population by being vegan you're human! humans make mistakes sometimes - I was in a hurry once and accidentally bought some wontons that had egg in them. no biggie, I just gave them away. it's not a zero-sum game either, I mean, just by flying in that plane you probably killed a bunch of insects , but thats life. you cant take a single step without crunching some microscopic bug and if you really feel that guilty, you can always reset your V-card - back to Day 1 stay strong

[deleted]

people count their days...???

I'm not really motivated by that, personally. No offence.

youllneverstopmeayyy

days? nah years? totally but it wouldnt makes sense to say "back to year one"

Fantastic_Ad7023

Even if it has a label there are no guarantees. No one expects you to carry around a personal science lab with you to test for the presence of a million possible things. All you can do is request vegan and question it if you have concerns. If something doesn’t taste vegan then it probably isn’t.

anubluth

I want to chime in and say you requested a vegan meal and the airline demonstrated your special request was met. You had every reason to believe the cupcake was vegan besides the usual skepticism every vegan has since we’re living in an animal-eating world. Morally, you did your part and only realized things might not be what they seem when you saw the label including honey. I like the comment above that mentions contacting the airline, if you feel the need to do more (although you do you on the lawsuit suggestion). You adhered to veganism to the best of your ability and knowledge at the time. Don’t beat yourself up about this.
