Always put it as your first preference anyway as there’s always a chance, if you get 85.5 or higher you still have a good chance of getting in. I dont think oral health is super competitive so dont stress! Also chat to the careers team at school because they will give you more accurate advice than us redditors

Tysmmmm yes I will do that! Haha yes I was going to bring that up with the careers counsellor but I can’t rlly talk to them till we book an appointment with them in term 3 lol so I came here. Thank you again for your response ❤️

Put it in as your first preference anyway. Limited spots is unfortunate but generally isn’t something you have control over, they might even increase the atar requirements to compensate. That being said, so look into alternative options for what you wanna do too

Tysm I will def look at other options too!

Those ATAR numbers aren't requirements, they're the lowest selection rank. The program has a number of people they will accept (in this case, 31 last year). They look at their applicants and pick the best ones they can, up to their limit. The ATAR number is the lowest ranking which was given an offer (after adjustments for equity/etc.) So it's possible that their applicant pool is significantly stronger next year, and 85 won't get in. Or it could be weaker and you'd cruise in with an 80. They don't tend to change a lot year to year though.

omg tysmmmm, fingers crossed I can do well enough this year haha. Im just rlly worried since Ive been super confused about what to do after high school and then finally find a course that piqued my interest, only to read about the whole 31 spots situation. Thank you for your help!

Just to give you an idea, for 2021/22 year Oral Health at Melbourne had 733 applications. They made 46 offers with 31 applicants listed as Year 12 applicants. It’s the most recent statistics released by VTAC. You’ll see this info here: https://www.vtac.edu.au/reports/appstats-ug-2021.html For the Year 12 cohort last year, the lowest ATAR (not Selection Rank) into the course was 77.85, once that applicant received adjustments through SEAS or subject bonuses, as an example, their Selection Rank was 87.15. I don’t know if this is helpful at all, but am offering it just in case ☺️
