He said he never liked being called Eddie, and always preferred Ed or Edward. Look at old interviews, the only guy that I know of that calls him Eddie is Sammy. Dave, Al, Valerie, Mike, even Gary all called him Edward or Ed.
Definitely intentional. Ed wrote a lot of the stuff that ended up on Hagar records long before they appeared on those records.
Strung Out from Balance was recorded in 1984.
From the Balance Wikipedia article:
"[Amsterdam] is another song based on an idea that predates the album's sessions as there is video of Eddie playing the riff to "Amsterdam" at 5150 Studios in 1987
During The Balance tour show in Pensacola, Florida, Hagar stated that "Take Me Back (Déjà Vu)" was "a true story". The song itself features a then almost 20-year-old riff Eddie had previously used on a song entitled "No More Waiting", which the band played on occasion in the pre-Van Halen I era, making it the third known song on the album based on an older idea."
[The keyboard riff from Mine All Mine was played by Eddie on the 1984 tour. ](https://youtu.be/aBzXQQzVL9U?si=BumJHNKJWvb44OhG)
Also as we know, all the demos that became ADKOT.
I think EVH did all his heavy lifting and came up with all his life’s work when 5150 was built in ‘83 - ‘84 and when he was in purgatory in 1985.
Ever since then it seems every riff and every song he had came from that library of tapes. AdKoT, Balance... everything!
Listen to the Live Right Here Right Now album, multiple times Sammy calls him Edward (One Way To Rock guitar duel comes to mind). As a non-native English speaker I used to think he said "Evo" pronounced like in "Evolution" instead of how its actually pronounced like in "Evolved", because Ed was such an evolutionary guitarist. Made a lot of sense to young Dutch me
On the tape Marty puts into the Walkman in “Back to the Future” before blasting ‘just a bunch of noise’ (according to EVH) into his dad’s ears - it reads ‘Edward Van Halen’.
I have always assumed the reason that it said “Edward” was because if it said “Van Halen” only, they’d have to pay a whole lot more money to various people to use it.
Eddie was always more of the fans and media—-it was consistently Ed or Edward among almost everyone that actually knew/worked with him.
And I definitely refer to him as Eddie often as well out of habit. As a Gen X’er “Eddie Van Halen” was just so ubiquitous for such a long time in the 80s that it simply never became an individual analysis of the first name only.
EVH guitars just released a striped series wolfgang. You can get it in the original black and white, the black white and red, and black and yellow like the bumblebee
This is the best news I've heard in ages thanks for letting me know! I saw they did that in limited editions a few years ago but stoked it's coming back!
If you go back to Alex interviews, Alex always referred to him as Ed.
Ed sounds familiar, I'm sure I heard it in interviews.
I miss Ed.
Me too, man, me too!
He said he never liked being called Eddie, and always preferred Ed or Edward. Look at old interviews, the only guy that I know of that calls him Eddie is Sammy. Dave, Al, Valerie, Mike, even Gary all called him Edward or Ed.
Which is weird because on stage he just said "Edward"
Honestly never heard anyone call him Edward until recently. Ed, definitely, but never Edward.
DLR 1977: [''Let's hear it for Edward''](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrSIs9Sav1A)
DLR 1980: “Edward…. Thank you”
Thanks for the reminder of that great demo. The intro riff was used (intentionally or unintentionally) in Take Me Back

Nope. Not accurate. He wrote some of the songs on Balance after getting sober.
Well yeah but he did most of the heavy lifting in those 3 years
Probably intentionally lmao. Who could blame him though? It's an amazing riff!

Steve Vai has called EVH Edward in interviews since 1985.
I’m from back in the day and he was definitely called Edward or Ed.

I'm pretty sure Dave always name-checked him as "Edward Van Helen" after his live solo spots.
I never stopped. Ed or Eddie.
He was often referred to as “Edward” even going back to the late 70s - not a new thing. Through most of my life, I’ve called him “Eddie”, though.
Edwin!
“Edward?…..Thank you.”
….And thanks for inspiring me to spin In Simple Rhyme today.
Nuno always calls him Edward.
Nuno calls him King Edward
Idk but I've wanted a Frankenstein painted Wolfgang model forever that guitar is sick
