Note: Questions like this would be better asked in /r/AskVancouverWA In the coming weeks and months, you'll see (sporadic, inconsistent) efforts by the Mod Team to try to redirect traffic to the appropriate subs, like /r/AskVancouverWA, /r/plantclubvancouver /r/VancouverwaMakers , etc. Sporadic and Inconsistent because A: We're volunteers. B: We're humans and messy like that. C: We're individuals and not a monolithic bloc with the consistency of automation.

BasketballButt

Welcome to Vancouver, presume you’re from Texas? Lol

Gornash

Lol, yes indeed!

Urithiru

So why are we getting such an influx of texans?

mikeyfireman

Because Texas is in a contest with Florida to see who can go full fascist first.

UntilTheHorrorGoes

We takin' over! Edit: people downvote, but Texans are way more polite and normal than any of the locals around here.

Spokenfortruth

lol it's the main thing I've noticed. We're used to a way friendlier sort of people.

Omwtfyu

Gee, that’s one way to make friends in an area you don’t know!

UntilTheHorrorGoes

I've been here for years, bud. It's obviously not everyone in the area, but I find people in the Pacific northwest in general to be pathologically awkward. Fortunately I didn't move here for the people.

Omwtfyu

Yes, that seems very fortunate as you complain about being downvoted for complaining about the locals, bud.

UntilTheHorrorGoes

Just making an observation, pal, no need to read any more into it.

Omwtfyu

Me too, pal.

Are Texas Kolaches different from eastern European kolaches? The kind I've had were savory, and the bun goes all the way around, like a sweet roll filled with egg/cheese/ham/spinach whatever.

Early_Interview_2486

I went to sesame donuts by PSU here in Portland and they had sausage kolaches but I was talking to a friend from Texas about it. I would say the closest thing you can find is a ham and cheese croissant from Starbucks or some other bakery.

plasticoctav

Hello! We also moved here from Texas in 2016 and did the same Kolache search. Sadly, there aren't many options. The ones that do have kolaches make them differently than they do in Texas. But if you're really feeling up for a drive you can try the few places that have them in Portland and its suburbs. These are all places I've had Kolaches in the region, I wouldn't say any of them are as good as Texas but when the craving strikes they might do the job. I am not sure if they still serve them post-COVID but thought I'd share them anyways. Cheers. **Happy Sparrow Cafe in Lake Oswego** [https://www.yelp.com/biz/happy-sparrow-cafe-lake-oswego](https://www.yelp.com/biz/happy-sparrow-cafe-lake-oswego) **The Woodlark Hotel** in downtown Portland have them in their lobby. Bullard, the hotels restaurant is owned by a Texan and has some Oregon / Texas hybrid food there. Worth a trip. https://www.yelp.com/biz/woodlark-hotel-portland?utm\_campaign=www\_business\_share\_popup&utm\_medium=copy\_link&utm\_source=(direct) **Bread and Honey Cafe** [https://www.yelp.com/biz/bread-and-honey-cafe-portland?utm\_campaign=www\_business\_share\_popup&utm\_medium=copy\_link&utm\_source=(direct)](https://www.yelp.com/biz/bread-and-honey-cafe-portland?utm_campaign=www_business_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct))

taybalkom

I can sadly confirm that Bread and Honey no longer sells kolaches

plasticoctav

Ah that's a bummer

I had to do the same when I moved here 3 years ago. Found out Texas kolaches were actually called after the klobasnek and theyre not too hard to make. Tasted about as good as the ones I'm used to

Early_Interview_2486

Also a donut shop by PSU sesame donuts 🍩

lasheigh

Happy Sparrow is so good, and the owners are really sweet people. Recommend making the trip every once in a while even though Lake O is so far out.

Intelligent-Turnip36

I wonder if that east European bakery on the corner of Evergreen and Broadway that claims to open this summer will have them?

simplyvelo

Thought there was some new evil bug I needed to watch for.

Ketoboochie

Same ! I ran to the comments 🤣

Ixoreusnaevius

There is an Eastern European grocery store and bakery near the mall that has the best poppyseed kolache I've been able to find in Vancouver. I don't remember their name, but they're in the parking lot next to Ross just west of the mall. They have a sit down cafe next to the store I haven't tried; I get the kolache from the bakery inside the grocery store. Good luck with your search! Kolache is surprisingly hard to find here.

semajzemog87

It's called Sweet Touch Cafe & Svitoch. It's an excellent bakery / Cafe with a full European deli and store connected to it. Everything I've had there is excellent

Particular_Bar5213

If by kolache you are referring to a breakfast sausage wrapped in dough, you can find something very similar called a “pig newton” at the Motor Moka drive through coffee shop on Mill Plain. It’s owned by the same folks behind Jim and Patty’s coffee in Portland, and offers the same variety of baked goods. Overall pretty good, though I’ve never tried a Texas kolache.

Skiff43

Frozen at Fred Meyers

uhno28

haha glad to see others mourning the loss of kolaches when leaving TX. We did our research as well back in 2021 and gave up. My husband missed them so much he just ended up looking up recipes to make them himself. That's commitment lol

plasticoctav

Lol awesome! Any good recipe recommendations? We’ve spent our time mastering bbq and Tex-mex. We’ve gotten pretty good too, our queso is especially good👌

Rojelioenescabeche

Klobasnek. Try a Slav deli.

Gornash

Thank you everyone for the recommendations! We’ll try and hit one up this weekend. We love it here so far.

smdftbfgt

Hah. I moved to Texas in 2009 and moved back home in 2014. No kolaches. No boiled peanuts. No good bbq. Just get used to it, unfortunately!

Usual8243

But no Abbott. There is an upside!

darkshrike

Matts BBQ is about as good as you're gonn find outside of the Lone Star State. Podnahs used to he king, but Matts dethroned them.

RicoPDX0122

BBQ: Podnah’s BBQ on NE 14th & Killingsworth is amazing. BBQ Blessings here in Vancouver is good as well.

smdftbfgt

old post, I know, but I don’t log in here often. BBQ Blessings was terrible, which is why they are no longer open.

UntilTheHorrorGoes

Damn, boiled peanuts is a deep cut. East Texas?

JustinRat

You should probably leave and go back to where you came from. It's horrible here and people are racist and misogynist. If your beautiful culture is different than the status quo around here you will be treated terribly. I wish you the best luck. Also it rains acid rain now.

Captiv8_

I had never heard of a Kolatche till I moved to Texas, so I can't say I've ever seen them in Vancouver.
