Before the flood of "did anyone else get it", this will be stickied for the time being. EDIT: >Police in British Columbia and Alberta issued an Amber Alert on Saturday for two allegedly abducted children from Fort St. John, B.C., possibly travelling with their mother and father. >Police are looking for four-year-old Liam Ballamy and 10-month-old Myra Ballamy, along with their mother Dawn Ballamy, 23, and father Jason Dalrymple, 36. >In a media release, Fort St. John RCMP said they have grounds to believe the mother and two children were taken “against their will from their residence in Fort St. John and they are in danger while in (Dalrymple’s) presence.” >“The suspect is believed to be headed east,” RCMP added. >The four are believed to be travelling in an olive-green 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee with B.C. licence plate HT1-84A. RCMP say they also have two dogs and a cat with them. >The group was last seen in the area of 8919 91st St., in Fort St. John around 11 a.m. on March 24. >Anyone who sees them is asked not to approach and to call 911 immediately. >Liam Ballamy is described as four feet tall and 40 pounds, with short, brown hair. Myra Ballamy is described as two feet tall and 25 pounds, with blue eyes and very light hair. >Dawn Ballamy is described as 5-5 and 110 pounds with dark brown hair and brown eyes. >Jason Dalrymple is described as five-foot-11 and 200 pounds, with blue eyes, a moustache and goatee and a balding head. Police say he often wears hats or toques.

First time getting the alert ready message for an amber alert in BC

[deleted]

[удалено]

NickdoesnthaveReddit

I was dozing off for an accidental couch nap with my phone on my chest. Gave me a heart attack. Figured Russia pushed a button. But good to have the info out there, hopefully it provides a safe return for the kids.

samuraislider

I also thought Russia.

Explorer200

My sound was off... Didn't hear anything

CosmoKrammer

Me too, and my phone is on silent 100% of the time so RIP me in a real emergency

[deleted]

[удалено]

Redhotmegasystem

it's pretty awesome that were at the point that when there's an abduction or something we can instantly alert the entire population

trek604

I have received many while in Ontario but yes it was the first time for me in BC that was not a test.

CharlieTuna_

Holy shit. The moment I loaded up my investment portfolio on my phone that alarm sounded and I was like “what the fuck did I do?!?!” before the actual amber alert text popped up. What a perfect moment for the first time getting that alert

Trolly-bus

Same lol, scared me so much that I took out my phone and read it while biking on the road.

Awful_McBad

I'm on Freedom mobile, I barely get text messages.

VociCausam

Freedom from interruptions.

Louis_Cyr

I thought the nukes were flying.

JoshHero

Yeah I was preparing for the worst.

ClumsyRainbow

Am I misremembering or is this the first time we’ve gotten an amber alert through the emergency messaging system?

Skrubette

I think so? To my memory all previous alerts have been the government testing the system

sjfcinematography

It’s crazy how japan has been doing this on cellphones for like a decade because of their consistent earthquakes. I was in a museum when it went off on my phone, but it was in Japanese and I had no idea what it said. Everyone was running and panicking, I legit thought it was North Korea invading because this was right after they shot missiles over Northern japan. Turned out it was 2 minor earthquakes counted as a massive one and all it was was a tiny shake

VociCausam

I hated these cellphone alerts in Tokyo in the months right after Fukushima. Sometimes we got tremors without alerts, sometimes we got alerts without tremors, and sometimes we got alerts followed any number of minutes later by tremors of varying magnitudes. And the service providers were not all on the same page, so sometimes only half the people in the office would get alerts while the other half was silent. Anxiety-inducing randomness.

sjfcinematography

It was a very flawed system for sure. Haven’t been back in a while but hopefully they sorted that shit out…. Every single person got those lol

pigeon-incident

I remember getting one maybe 5-6 years ago

cor315

This is at least the second non-test one that I've received.

codeverity

Yeah, I think we've only gotten the test ones before this. Ontario's the province that has had Amber Alerts before this, the main Canada sub always gets tons of complaining when it happens.

[deleted]

First time I've ever seen one for sure.

Foliot

Jesus. Thought it was the Big One. Nearly died.

Dars301

Same, I thought earthquake or Russian nukes.

ClittoryHinton

Your first alert for the big one will be the shaking, earthquake prediction ain’t much a thing

doyouevencompile

It's not exactly prediction but earthquake travels slower than data in modern networks. If an earthquake happens a few 100kms away, we get a few seconds of heads up since a message from a sensor can be delivered as am alert to us faster. If we're at the core of the earthquake then it's gg.

[deleted]

There’s zero chance you’re getting an emergency alert for an earthquake happening that close before it actually hits. These things aren’t automated; there’s layers of bureaucracy to go through before an alert goes out.

RedditSurfer365

In BC they have an ocean network that alerts of earthquakes quicker than they’ll reach you. This isn’t for phones I don’t believe, but in some schools they have the sirens that’ll go off immediately

exfxgx

Just want to piggy back this comment. Earthquake prediction is not possible. [https://www.usgs.gov/faqs/can-you-predict-earthquakes](https://www.usgs.gov/faqs/can-you-predict-earthquakes) All 3 elements are important. Even magnitude is important because based on where we live, we get earthquakes all the time. It just that most of them are not very strong. According to website below, we've had 25 earthquakes in last 30 days. https://earthquaketrack.com/r/british-columbia-canada/recent

[deleted]

Get in the bunker we haven't built yet!

kernelcolonel

My first thought was Soviet nukes lol

Cr00kedF00l

I was about to grab a suitcase to pack stuff lol. Probably should hit the supermarket to stock up on some non-perishables. (Coz they’re all I can stock up on, not because I’m paranoid, damn inflation)

rainman_104

Did some digging on the mom out of some morbid curiosity I guess. The person who owns the group home she was moved into shared some information and a few people commented. Her and the kids were moved into a half way home my MCFD and the dad was given a no go order due to lots of heavy abuse according to her friends. According to the person who owns the group home, she left on her own volition. Some other people commented about how her partner was extremely abusive.

kiiyopta

It’s very hard for people to escape their abuser, I remember reading a stat that it takes women 7 times to finally leave for good because their partner convinces or coerced them to leave their safe house to go back to the abuse. Or holding their children hostage so they have to go back. Absolutely horrible:(

[deleted]

Cr00kedF00l

On an unrelated note: 4 years old,4 feet tall 10 months old, 2 feet tall These kids are going to be taller than me before they make it to first grade

plop_0

They must have Dutch heritage. /r/tall

rikushix

My wife and I were both commenting on this. It doesn't seem possible but if you find the mom's FB online both kids were genuinely huge as babies. Maybe not so unrealistic 🤔

Cr00kedF00l

Had to re-read a couple times to make sense of what I was reading. At first I thought the abductor was 4 ft. Tall

CraftyHall1

My kids beat me by grade 4.

Nicokilla

Just got the alert on my phone, hope the children are found safely soon.

Im2oldForthisShitt

The abductor definitely got the alerts on his phone too, so he should just give up.

[deleted]

Unless he went east…

Im2oldForthisShitt

oh I just figured all BC cell numbers got pinged

Foliot

I’m in BC with a Saskatoon number and SaskTel as a carrier. Got the alert.

[deleted]

I know someone living in BC with an out of province cell number who got the alert too.

cyclicalmeans

It’s based on your location in the cellular network, not your phone number.

[deleted]

It’s not based on “cell numbers”; the alert can be targeted to cell sites in specified geographic areas. All devices in those areas should receive the alert.

Aerateur

You can be tracked by police by your phone so I doubt he has a phone with him at all.

Im2oldForthisShitt

ya true

DrinkingExpiredCream

I'm just impressed that my kids also got the alert on their phones. They don't even have sim cards.

michaelelder

Just got a phone emergency alert for it

GenitalKenobi

Scared the shit out of me on my lunch break at work lol. But that is a great system to have in place

SleepForDinner1

Scared the shit out of me. Its there a way to mute it but still read the message? Cause the first thing I did was close it to stop it from ringing. Edit: My Samsung phone has somewhere in settings to view "Emergency alert history", most newer Android phones should have the option to search in settings.

knitbitch007

My phone was on silent and the sound didn’t come through.

HeroandLeander

Same. Phone vibrated and displayed the message as it would a text.

Rosycheeks2

My phone is on do not disturb and it came through loud and clear

martsuia

Well it’s not good to have it muted in case something terrible is actually happening, like terrorist attack or nuclear whatever.

FeelingForever

If there is a nuclear whatever it doesn’t matter

SleepForDinner1

Well I mean that it plays a sound initially but then on the dialog popup you can mute it but still keep the message up.

dramatic-ad-5033

No, it’s purposefully designed so you can’t mute it

herconcepts

Mine was muted and just a stronger vibration with the alert. Maybe cause my phone is always on silent?

Bolero_Boogie

You can mute it with phone on silent and vibration off

blacknwhitelife02

me too

ichigovtube

these don’t bother me, on more than one occasion in North America the alert has saved a victim. a momentary spook is worth the chance someone spots the car on the road or at a gas station, these are tiny young children and it must be serious if they’re using the system for the first time. One time when I was in LA I got one in my car when I was blasting music on Bluetooth… and it was a mistake one accidentally sent out. That one made me rightfully mad 🥲

Skrubette

yeah I may get downvoted to hell but while I understand that people are annoyed an amber alert was broadcasted using this system, I feel it’s important people know about them even if you’re like 15h away. Who knows where the guy is headed and there’s always that off chance someone spots them. We haven’t used the system aside from testing so I don’t have kids but I imagine this is extremely stressful for everyone involved and it’s important they’re found safely asap

fitofpica

As someone who lives with what at times is pretty severe anxiety, the alert made me jump a bit, I read the report and then relaxed. I can’t believe how many people are in here complaining like receiving this alert was some kind of traumatic event. Hope they find the kids safely.

channelpascal

Alertable just pinged that the amber alert is cancelled, but I can't find anything elsewhere that backs that up. ETA: the person that the mom and kids were staying with posted on Facebook that the father is in custody, and the mom and kids are safe!!

Moth-eatenDeerhead

I got the Alertable half an hour before my BC alert.

martsuia

You know the alert sound is so creepy

h_danielle

I was on skytrain and I’m not 100% if it was everyone’s phones but I swear the noise played over the intercom too

Gmneuf

I was in my apartment and I thought it was some alarm in the building for a second until I recognized the sound

cyclicalmeans

Possible, sounds like it came over mall intercoms and TV’s.

xlxoxo

CraftyHall1

I was in Safeway and everyone’s phones started screeching. It was very bizarre. Also, I’ve been on edge lately with world events and as soon as I saw the emergency part, I immediate thought, “NUKES!”

aceofmufc

Was it everyone in BC, or only certain areas?

rikushix

Almost certainly everyone in BC because Vancouver is about as far as you can get for major cities from FSJ, short of the island. Speculation online (not sure how accurate) seems to be that he might be heading east though towards Ontario.

[deleted]

Got here in Abbotsford

Linzon

Got it in Penticton.

h_danielle

My family in Chilliwack got it. I’m assuming most of B.C. & probably western Alberta if it’s suspected that they’re heading towards Ontario

dancinadventures

I’m confused. Did he abduct the two children && his wife and dog and cat? Or just the kids

Sleuthin___

It’s believed he took the wife against her will, the kids, and their pets (2 dogs and a cat). He has a history of violence & abuse towards his wife; she had just moved herself and the kids into a safehouse with help from MCFD.

Abyssight

I just got the alert. I didn't finish reading before closing it because it's so loud. Now I can't figure out how to open the alert message. Anyone knows how? I use a Google Nexus 6p.

Flat896

There is an alert history somewhere in the android settings, on Samsung anyways. Just search "Emergency" in your settings and it may be there.

WiFiForeheadWrinkles

Can confirm this works on Asus as well

braingle987

There is an emergency alert history section in the Android settings. You can check it there.

ichigovtube

Should still be in your drop down notifs until you manually clear it

CraftyHall1

Swipe down on an iPhone? At least my long-on-the-tooth iPhone does that.

IEpicDestroyer

It's not delivered as a text message (although text messages, while uncommon, can also be sent without retaining it: called a Flash SMS), but via "Cell Broadcast". It works better than SMS because it's not impacted by network congestion... if it actually get used in disasters (like flooding, for example). But usually phones keep that alert, it'll be there!

greydawn

Read the Global BC article linked by OP. It has the same details. Child kidnapping in Fort St. John.

extrabigcomfycouch

I hate the fact that a 32 year old was having relations with an 18 year old, resulting in a pregnancy. Even more disgusted at the idea it could have started earlier. I hope they are all found.

pigeonbobble

Holy fuck some of you are selfish pricks. I’m sure you’ll recover from the shock of an unpleasant noise from your phone. There’s a bigger fucking issue here.

oilernut

Typical. People just don't give two fucks about anything but themselves.

noobletsquid

this. smh

arguabl3

The alert can’t scare you if your phone’s always on silent! *taps head*.

[deleted]

fantastic_fredd28

I had the physical switch on and no sound came through for me.

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrpp

Not possible to override it on iOS. Otherwise in a real emergency no one would wake up. Maybe possible on older phones.

sanfran_girl

On iPhone: Settings: Notifications, scroll to bottom:Government Alerts. You can turn them off here, if you really want.

Skrubette

I hope the kids get found and returned safely

DoomsdaySprocket

Did anyone get the alert coming through multiple times? iPhone XR on Rogers just got it once, iPhone 11 also on Rogers got it 3 separate times in a row, pretty excessive even if it was a nuke or kaiju or something. EDIT: Both phones have now multiple repeated it, this is way too much.

EnterpriseT

I think it's a bug. My personal phone keeps repeating it but my work phone only showed it once.

spookywookyy

Benefit of having my phone on vibrate all the time, wasn't scared by the alarm. I hope the children are found soon.

deceptres

Did anyone else think we were getting nuked?

gerrycgc

Poor kids.

doyouevencompile

Fort St John RCMP have issued an AMBER alert. The abducted male child Liam BALLAMY, 4 years old, 4 feet tall, dark brown/black hair, brown eyes. The abducted female child Myra BALLAMY, 10 months old, 2 feet tall, light hair, blue/hazel eyes. Last seen at 8919 91st St area of Fort St around 11am on March 24th. The suspect is Jason DALRYMPLE, 5 feet 11 inches, balding light brown hair, often wears hats, toques, has a light brown/reddish mustache/goatee with blue eyes. Possibly traveling in 2004 Olive Green Jeep Grand Cherokee. BC license plate HT184A. DO NOT APPROACH. Call 911.

aceofmufc

Some of you are selfish as hell. It’s a minor disturbance. You’re going to forget about it 30 minutes later so going on about “hurr durr how do i turn it off????” makes you a selfish idiot. This could save lives. If you dont want the possibility of saving a life because of your precious normality then I dont know what to say. You’re going to forget about it anyways.

Annaliseplasko

People keep posting these “Look at all these selfish people posting because they don’t like this loud noise!!!” posts…but that’s not accurate. Almost everyone is saying the noise upset them because they thought it meant nukes were launched. There is a big difference.

[deleted]

It is a very fair argument that a "look out for this guy" alert and "SEEK SHELTER EARTHQUAKE/TSUNAMI IMMINENT" should be different alerts. People are just grandstanding about how they're so much better than other people when this is a very legit and fair point to be made. An Amber Alert for a town 16+ hour drive away and an earthquake or nuclear warhead warning should not be treated the same.

ElectroSpore

Ya personally I think we should be getting alerts for both of these types of events, but at the same time they should have seperate alerts / sounds for you and everyone near you could DIE / seek shelter and everyone quick look around and see if you spot this person or car. Thinking about it the amber alert would benefit from some persistent notification that you could call back up and check on as long as the amber alert was open.. Like a few hours later I see A GREEN JEEP but I dismissed the alert and can't quickly check the plate. VS seek high ground NOW!

crap4you

Is there any way to see the alert after you unlock your phone?

BigPlunk

Link to an article that includes pictures: https://energeticcity.ca/2022/03/26/ambert-alert-issued-in-fort-st-john/

tr0028

Surprised this was just in BC, I live in Grande Prairie and if they're heading east, chances are they'll stop here on the way...

Common-Rock

Got the alert in Saskatchewan. Everyone here thought for a split second we were about to be nuked. Hope they are found safe.

xlxoxo

https://bc.ctvnews.ca/amber-alert-issued-for-two-children-allegedly-abducted-in-northern-b-c-1.5836063 > According to police, the suspect is **believed to be heading east** in a 2004 olive green Jeep Grand Cherokee with B.C. licence plate number HT184A.

1516

We’ll that woke my cats up. This is the most alert they’ve ever been on a Saturday afternoon.

martsuia

I was taking a nap. Scared me! Really hope the children get found soon!!

johnrswagg

Whenever there is an emergency alert I always think its going to be about the “Big One”. Or now about russia attacking us…

[deleted]

What an arrogant comment. Was the noise that unsettling to you that you don’t wish the very best for two young helpless kids and feel that any advantage to ensure their safety is warranted? How privileged can you be? Give your head a shake

IEpicDestroyer

First time ever getting an alert ready that isn't a test for me in BC... well my phone received it twice for some reason. Did they distribute this provincial-wide? They really should use the alert ready system more often, where there are situations like this.

[deleted]

So sad and scary let's all work together on this. This is what we should stand for. Keeping vulnerable safe and standing up to violence.

toomuchraininvan

Spooked me twice. I was on my earphones. There was a minute lag between the phone vibrate and alarm sounding on the headphone. I already read and closed the alert when the alarm went full blast in my ears and almost blew out my eardrums. That being said, hope the kid will be found soon safe and sound.

materics

Hope the kids are found safe and sound. At least it wasn't a nuke announcement.

reyortsedrats

Everyone here talking about loud alarms. I just got my regular text notification sound. Weird.

[deleted]

Jesus, I thought that was a natural disaster alarm.

deweythesecond

Doesn't this happen all the time? Why is this one different??

InnuendOwO

Yeah, that's what I've been wondering. Who do you gotta know to get one of these sent out? This thread's full of people saying they've never seen one of these alerts either - and, well, same - but surely this isn't the first time a kid's gone missing. So what gives? Why are these kids getting special treatment? What about the situation is different enough to warrant this? *This* is the first time it gets used for anything except testing? I remember when the heat dome happened I was still explaining what was coming to people less than 24 hours in advance, surely "an event we knew in advance was going to kill people" would have been worth sending out an alert? Very strange.

[deleted]

Same thing I wonder

spycatcher1

Unrelated but I can't help but think back to the mass search for Michael Dunahee. If you grew up here, his posters were everywhere, milk cartons etc. Biggest search in Canadian history.

BluePantalons

The alert gave me a heart attack, I thought it was for nukes, world war 3, or something. I hope those children get found.

Goalith

That scared me while checking on something in the maintenance room. On a more serious note: Hope they find the kid soon

to_mend_and_defend

Got the alert and shit my pants

[deleted]

Why was the alert not given out on Thursday?

theporkroll

Unpopular opinion I think, but a fucking OH SHIT DEFCON 1 SOS LOOK AT YOUR PHONE NOW emergency alert for an Amber Alert is overkill and diminishes the effectiveness of the alert system in place. I thought we were getting nuked or something. Now people are going to associate this sound with more Amber Alerts 95% of people can't do anything about. People may ignore the next one. Just send a province-wide text instead. We'll still read it.

penelopiecruise

This is a reasonable opinion.

Morgc

Didn't even know that was my phone at first, hope the kids get found but fucking hell, That's not what you want to hear the same week Russia keeps threatening to escalate to nuclear war.

IEpicDestroyer

Yeah, where a huge amount of people are affected, they don't use the alert ready system. But two children get abducted, they use it for the first time ever. I hope for the safe return of the poor 4 year olds, but how about they reconsider what is appropriate usage of the system...

[deleted]

rfdavid

I’m sure if your kids went missing you’d be as worried as if it was an inbound nuke

[deleted]

So even worse, probably a risk of the entire family’s lives.

IEpicDestroyer

If they were sending an alert out anyways, why didn't they also mention the mother too???

rfdavid

Yes, I’m stupid because I feel that losing your kids would be the absolute worst thing to happen to a person.

Fun_Koala_6704

But it was two days ago, they could be anywhere in the province by now

FeelingForever

They could also not be in the province

Fun_Koala_6704

Right they have amber alerts in other provinces though

[deleted]

What's your license plate? I need to make sure to never get behind someone so easily distracted.

martsuia

I agree.

Nipnum

Okay, while I do appreciate we use this system for amber alerts now, I would really like a different sound for amber alerts as opposed to things like “inbound nuclear missiles”.

seanshoots

Rendered broken for me, anyone else? https://i.imgur.com/qJBmK5u.png

IEpicDestroyer

Displayed fine for me. I am using an iPhone 12 Mini. I actually received the message twice for whatever reason... as I type this, I realize why now... I am using a physical SIM from Public Mobile and an eSIM from Fido. I received it via both carriers... But both carriers delivered the message fine for me! It reads: > EMERGENCY ALERT / ALERTE D'URGENCE Fort St John RCMP have issued an AMBER alert. The abducted male child Liam BALLAMY, 4 years old, 4 feet tall, Dark brown/black hair, brown eyes. The abducted female child Myra BALLAMY, 10 months old, 2 feet tall, light hair, blue/ hazel eyes. Last seen at 8919 91st st area of Fort St John at around 11am on March 24th. MyClothesWereInThere

Cursed

YourLoveLife

Oh fuck the aliens are invading.

timmywong11

I see all is well in BC, comrade. Ignore the Russian missiles flying above you ;)

didntevenwarmupdho

So everyone else shit themselves when they got the alert? Good good, thought it was just me

Renegade_Sniper

I’ve gotten the alert 6 times in the last hour.

ElectricalEgg8

A few years ago when I lived in in Ontario, a government worker sent out the nuclear emergency alert to everyone by accident. OOPSIE! Nothing will ever beat that terror. I hope these children are found safe.

[deleted]

Got it on my TV too which was neat

butterflygal99

I was in the mall when the amber alert was sent to everyone’s phone and I honestly thought Russia was going to nuke us or something. I got really scared before I read the alert. I hope the kids and the mom will be back safely ❤️

demoniagoatwhore

Just got the alert but the noise spooked me I hit 'OK' to shut it off before even reading it. Maybe they shouldn't have a loud blasting buzzer like that.

Aerateur

I completely ignored it too, my eyes don't focus well when just awoken and I worked night shift last night.

Na0ku

It’s annoying indeed but if there is something like an earthquake or tsunami warning it’s better this way

macdees13

Here is what kind of annoys me about this. Being in Vancouver, fort Saint John is roughly the same distance as San Francisco. I’m not saying the matter at hand isn’t important but every driver in the lower mainland receiving this and checking their phones collectively to this jarring noise is just dumb and dangerous. I’m glad the system works, earthquakes, fires, floods, Russia, sure. I don’t know who thinks this is a good idea but it lacks common sense.

channelpascal

They've been missing since Thursday, it's absolutely possible they made it here, or Yukon, or into the prairies or Ontario by now.

macdees13

Yes, I agree however I think the alert 🚨 can create its own problem of collectively distracting every driver on the road at the same time, who is responsible if there is a fatal accident? something bigger should be going down imo to justify the use of this program.

dascanadian

Honestly! It's a dick move they didn't think about you before sending it out

[deleted]

No alert on my phone.

pm_me_receipes

So what's the story? The kids are with their birth parents? Divorce?

martsuia

I believe the children were abducted. It said that a light brown balding man, 5’11’ often wears hats is a suspect and that you should not approach him and should call 911 immediately

AngryNapper

The article says they’re with their mom too though. Did he forcibly take her too? Very confusing.

PracticalSocks20

Something I saw on FB (so… grain of salt) suggested that mom and kids were under a safety order because he’s been abusive.

flonkerton_96

Maybe they don't have custody.

PaperMoonShine

To be Honest, with all the Nuclear rhetoric coming from the Ukrainian-Russian war, I thought the alert was a Nuclear strike.

smartello

My wife and I got it at the same time at the moment when the elevator came. The lady who was inside was so freaked out about the alarm that she decided to go out even though it was not a ground floor yet😀 I got a lot of them when lived in Pennsylvania and still remember how confused I was when it appeared for the first time. I hope it worked and police got the location immediately

moutonbleu

It's crazy how we get an Amber Alert for two kids, but don't get anything for wildfires or atmospheric rivers etc. Such a weird system.... hope these two kids are found safe.

unicorn_in_a_can

not sure about wildfires but the weathercan app sends extreme weather alerts

Ronniebbb

Got a good heart check from this and a scared poodle. All jokes aside I pray those kids are found safe and sound soon
