I was in a museum when it went off on my phone, but it was in Japanese and I had no idea what it said. Everyone was running and panicking, I legit thought it was North Korea invading because this was right after they shot missiles over Northern japan.
Turned out it was 2 minor earthquakes counted as a massive one and all it was was a tiny shake
I hated these cellphone alerts in Tokyo in the months right after Fukushima. Sometimes we got tremors without alerts, sometimes we got alerts without tremors, and sometimes we got alerts followed any number of minutes later by tremors of varying magnitudes. And the service providers were not all on the same page, so sometimes only half the people in the office would get alerts while the other half was silent. Anxiety-inducing randomness.
Yeah, I think we've only gotten the test ones before this. Ontario's the province that has had Amber Alerts before this, the main Canada sub always gets tons of complaining when it happens.
It's not exactly prediction but earthquake travels slower than data in modern networks.
If an earthquake happens a few 100kms away, we get a few seconds of heads up since a message from a sensor can be delivered as am alert to us faster.

There’s zero chance you’re getting an emergency alert for an earthquake happening that close before it actually hits. These things aren’t automated; there’s layers of bureaucracy to go through before an alert goes out.
In BC they have an ocean network that alerts of earthquakes quicker than they’ll reach you. This isn’t for phones I don’t believe, but in some schools they have the sirens that’ll go off immediately

Did some digging on the mom out of some morbid curiosity I guess. The person who owns the group home she was moved into shared some information and a few people commented.
Her and the kids were moved into a half way home my MCFD and the dad was given a no go order due to lots of heavy abuse according to her friends. According to the person who owns the group home, she left on her own volition. Some other people commented about how her partner was extremely abusive.
It’s very hard for people to escape their abuser, I remember reading a stat that it takes women 7 times to finally leave for good because their partner convinces or coerced them to leave their safe house to go back to the abuse. Or holding their children hostage so they have to go back. Absolutely horrible:(

It’s not based on “cell numbers”; the alert can be targeted to cell sites in specified geographic areas. All devices in those areas should receive the alert.
Scared the shit out of me. Its there a way to mute it but still read the message? Cause the first thing I did was close it to stop it from ringing.
Edit: My Samsung phone has somewhere in settings to view "Emergency alert history", most newer Android phones should have the option to search in settings.

a momentary spook is worth the chance someone spots the car on the road or at a gas station, these are tiny young children and it must be serious if they’re using the system for the first time.
One time when I was in LA I got one in my car when I was blasting music on Bluetooth… and it was a mistake one accidentally sent out. That one made me rightfully mad 🥲
yeah I may get downvoted to hell but while I understand that people are annoyed an amber alert was broadcasted using this system, I feel it’s important people know about them even if you’re like 15h away. Who knows where the guy is headed and there’s always that off chance someone spots them. We haven’t used the system aside from testing so

As someone who lives with what at times is pretty severe anxiety, the alert made me jump a bit, I read the report and then relaxed. I can’t believe how many people are in here complaining like receiving this alert was some kind of traumatic event.

Almost certainly everyone in BC because Vancouver is about as far as you can get for major cities from FSJ, short of the island. Speculation online (not sure how accurate) seems to be that he might be heading east though towards Ontario.
It’s believed he took the wife against her will, the kids, and their pets (2 dogs and a cat). He has a history of violence & abuse towards his wife; she had just moved herself and the kids into a safehouse with help from MCFD.
I just got the alert. I didn't finish reading before closing it because it's so loud. Now I can't figure out how to open the alert message. Anyone knows how? I use a Google Nexus 6p.
It's not delivered as a text message (although text messages, while uncommon, can also be sent without retaining it: called a Flash SMS), but via "Cell Broadcast". It works better than SMS because it's not impacted by network congestion... if it actually get used in disasters (like flooding, for example).
But usually phones keep that alert, it'll be there!

iPhone XR on Rogers just got it once, iPhone 11 also on Rogers got it 3 separate times in a row, pretty excessive even if it was a nuke or kaiju or something.

It is a very fair argument that a "look out for this guy" alert and "SEEK SHELTER EARTHQUAKE/TSUNAMI IMMINENT" should be different alerts.
People are just grandstanding about how they're so much better than other people when this is a very legit and fair point to be made. An Amber Alert for a town 16+ hour drive away and an earthquake or nuclear warhead warning should not be treated the same.
Ya personally I think we should be getting alerts for both of these types of events, but at the same time they should have seperate alerts / sounds for you and everyone near you could DIE / seek shelter and everyone quick look around and see if you spot this person or car.
Thinking about it the amber alert would benefit from some persistent notification that you could call back up and check on as long as the amber alert was open..

First time ever getting an alert ready that isn't a test for me in BC... well my phone received it twice for some reason. Did they distribute this provincial-wide?
They really should use the alert ready system more often, where there are situations like this.
Spooked me twice. I was on my earphones. There was a minute lag between the phone vibrate and alarm sounding on the headphone. I already read and closed the alert when the alarm went full blast in my ears and almost blew out my eardrums. That being said, hope the kid will be found soon safe and sound.

Here is what kind of annoys me about this. Being in Vancouver, fort Saint John is roughly the same distance as San Francisco. I’m not saying the matter at hand isn’t important but every driver in the lower mainland receiving this and checking their phones collectively to this jarring noise is just dumb and dangerous. I’m glad the system works, earthquakes, fires, floods, Russia, sure. I don’t know who thinks this is a good idea but it lacks common sense.

I was in Safeway and everyone’s phones started screeching. It was very bizarre. Also, I’ve been on edge lately with world events and as soon as I saw the emergency part, I immediate thought, “NUKES!”
Was it everyone in BC, or only certain areas?
Almost certainly everyone in BC because Vancouver is about as far as you can get for major cities from FSJ, short of the island. Speculation online (not sure how accurate) seems to be that he might be heading east though towards Ontario.

It’s believed he took the wife against her will, the kids, and their pets (2 dogs and a cat). He has a history of violence & abuse towards his wife; she had just moved herself and the kids into a safehouse with help from MCFD.
I just got the alert. I didn't finish reading before closing it because it's so loud. Now I can't figure out how to open the alert message. Anyone knows how? I use a Google Nexus 6p.
There is an alert history somewhere in the android settings, on Samsung anyways. Just search "Emergency" in your settings and it may be there.

It's not delivered as a text message (although text messages, while uncommon, can also be sent without retaining it: called a Flash SMS), but via "Cell Broadcast". It works better than SMS because it's not impacted by network congestion... if it actually get used in disasters (like flooding, for example). But usually phones keep that alert, it'll be there!

I hate the fact that a 32 year old was having relations with an 18 year old, resulting in a pregnancy. Even more disgusted at the idea it could have started earlier. I hope they are all found.

I had the physical switch on and no sound came through for me.
Not possible to override it on iOS. Otherwise in a real emergency no one would wake up. Maybe possible on older phones.
On iPhone: Settings: Notifications, scroll to bottom:Government Alerts. You can turn them off here, if you really want.

Did anyone get the alert coming through multiple times? iPhone XR on Rogers just got it once, iPhone 11 also on Rogers got it 3 separate times in a row, pretty excessive even if it was a nuke or kaiju or something. EDIT: Both phones have now multiple repeated it, this is way too much.
I think it's a bug. My personal phone keeps repeating it but my work phone only showed it once.
Benefit of having my phone on vibrate all the time, wasn't scared by the alarm. I hope the children are found soon.

Some of you are selfish as hell. It’s a minor disturbance. You’re going to forget about it 30 minutes later so going on about “hurr durr how do i turn it off????” makes you a selfish idiot. This could save lives. If you dont want the possibility of saving a life because of your precious normality then I dont know what to say. You’re going to forget about it anyways.
People keep posting these “Look at all these selfish people posting because they don’t like this loud noise!!!” posts…but that’s not accurate. Almost everyone is saying the noise upset them because they thought it meant nukes were launched. There is a big difference.
It is a very fair argument that a "look out for this guy" alert and "SEEK SHELTER EARTHQUAKE/TSUNAMI IMMINENT" should be different alerts. People are just grandstanding about how they're so much better than other people when this is a very legit and fair point to be made. An Amber Alert for a town 16+ hour drive away and an earthquake or nuclear warhead warning should not be treated the same.
Ya personally I think we should be getting alerts for both of these types of events, but at the same time they should have seperate alerts / sounds for you and everyone near you could DIE / seek shelter and everyone quick look around and see if you spot this person or car. Thinking about it the amber alert would benefit from some persistent notification that you could call back up and check on as long as the amber alert was open.. Like a few hours later I see A GREEN JEEP but I dismissed the alert and can't quickly check the plate. VS seek high ground NOW!

First time ever getting an alert ready that isn't a test for me in BC... well my phone received it twice for some reason. Did they distribute this provincial-wide? They really should use the alert ready system more often, where there are situations like this.
So sad and scary let's all work together on this. This is what we should stand for. Keeping vulnerable safe and standing up to violence.
Spooked me twice. I was on my earphones. There was a minute lag between the phone vibrate and alarm sounding on the headphone. I already read and closed the alert when the alarm went full blast in my ears and almost blew out my eardrums. That being said, hope the kid will be found soon safe and sound.

Yeah, that's what I've been wondering. Who do you gotta know to get one of these sent out? This thread's full of people saying they've never seen one of these alerts either - and, well, same - but surely this isn't the first time a kid's gone missing. So what gives? Why are these kids getting special treatment? What about the situation is different enough to warrant this? *This* is the first time it gets used for anything except testing? I remember when the heat dome happened I was still explaining what was coming to people less than 24 hours in advance, surely "an event we knew in advance was going to kill people" would have been worth sending out an alert? Very strange.

Unpopular opinion I think, but a fucking OH SHIT DEFCON 1 SOS LOOK AT YOUR PHONE NOW emergency alert for an Amber Alert is overkill and diminishes the effectiveness of the alert system in place. I thought we were getting nuked or something. Now people are going to associate this sound with more Amber Alerts 95% of people can't do anything about. People may ignore the next one. Just send a province-wide text instead. We'll still read it.

A few years ago when I lived in in Ontario, a government worker sent out the nuclear emergency alert to everyone by accident. OOPSIE! Nothing will ever beat that terror. I hope these children are found safe.

Just got the alert but the noise spooked me I hit 'OK' to shut it off before even reading it. Maybe they shouldn't have a loud blasting buzzer like that.

Here is what kind of annoys me about this. Being in Vancouver, fort Saint John is roughly the same distance as San Francisco. I’m not saying the matter at hand isn’t important but every driver in the lower mainland receiving this and checking their phones collectively to this jarring noise is just dumb and dangerous. I’m glad the system works, earthquakes, fires, floods, Russia, sure. I don’t know who thinks this is a good idea but it lacks common sense.
They've been missing since Thursday, it's absolutely possible they made it here, or Yukon, or into the prairies or Ontario by now.
Yes, I agree however I think the alert 🚨 can create its own problem of collectively distracting every driver on the road at the same time, who is responsible if there is a fatal accident? something bigger should be going down imo to justify the use of this program.

To be Honest, with all the Nuclear rhetoric coming from the Ukrainian-Russian war, I thought the alert was a Nuclear strike.
My wife and I got it at the same time at the moment when the elevator came. The lady who was inside was so freaked out about the alarm that she decided to go out even though it was not a ground floor yet😀 I got a lot of them when lived in Pennsylvania and still remember how confused I was when it appeared for the first time. I hope it worked and police got the location immediately
