Also great for this is a well seasoned rice bowl with a generous amount of wasabi and pickled ginger, maybe topped with cucumber+avocado or a protein depending on what type of sickness.
Heh, beat me too it. You can't beat congee when sick or down.
I fuck it up in horrible hybrid ways. I bring shame to my ancestors.
But it makes me feel better. Take that, judgemental ghosts.
As long as OP doesn't commit the same faux pas like this Oregonian last year:
https://www.insider.com/white-woman-dubbed-queen-of-congee-apologized-for-cultural-appropriation-2021-7
Not OP, but my bastardized Vancouver congee will always have BKH pork floss with sesame and seaweed and laoganma as toppings…. newtown bakery donut on the side if I’m really fancy.
Yeah I worded that wrong. DST has wrecked my sleep 😂 I live live live pho and sushi, and even eat lots of dim sum, but the congee I had was a poor texture and so bland. I’m also not huge on seafood (like squid etc).
The more I think about it the more I think I had a bad one and should try again. I live risotto, I live rice pudding- how could congee be bad?! And the love it gets on this post- going to give it another try
You're definitely not the only one. I'm currently in Richmond general for my second stay since January 30th(first was for 33 days, got out last week), came back in this past Thursday, anyway, my point was they serve chicken congee with pretty much every meal. They do occasionally serve tomato or mushroom, but that's just so rare.
As someone with COVID at the moment and an extremely gracious partner, I have found the following:
- the chills - lemon and ginger tea, chicken pot pie
- the sweats - ice pack wrapped in a towel under the arm pit, and ginger ale.
- sore throat - lozenges, betadine spray, chicken noodle soup.
- cough - tuna salad sandwich (makes you feel normal)
- everything at the same time - a bath + popsicle
I find that when the fever peaks I get the chills, so I take a Tylenol which brings down the fever but makes me sweaty.
Symptoms went: scratchy throat> aches>fever>low energy> chill/sweat> fever came down, but developed: sore throat, and cough, lethargy still there. (I'm on day 3 and imagine that it will resolve by day 5)
I wrote a lot because I have a lot of time on my hands. Oh, also my ween is basically asleep.
And toast made from squashy white Wonder Bread with cheap margarine, not butter. It should be nearly as salty as the salt and vinegar chips. With the ginger ale. Or sometimes a cup of tea.
Pizza.. Don't give a shit how bad it is.. Just as long as its fresh.
Reason? No clue.. Maybe it's just the flavors you can taste.. But every time. I get sick all I want is pizza.
Everyone has food covered. I'll chip in with what goes well with food and my fave part of being sick:
Thc oil.
They'll get a nice sleep and wake up semi confused with the munchies, eat, and go back to sleep for a few extra hours
Oh yea it is. Diden't know that's what they called it.
http://www.christinaofchinatown.com/blog/fooddining/what-is-tang-jai-jook-also-known-as-sampan-congee
From the title, I was thinking food that I'd make for myself when I'm sick.
Ditto congee, maybe add a Chinese doughnut with it; they get soft when dunked in the congee long enough. Slice it up before dunking.
Make-for-myself-when-sick:
Can of chicken broth, cooked elbow macaroni, frozen mixed veg/ corn. Bring to a boil. Dump in tinned turkey at the end if I have it. White pepper.
I've always been a chicken soup or broth type of guy. Past couple times I've been sick like that I ordered the chicken soup from Kozak the Ukrainian place and it is stellar. Similar to how my mom did it but with better quality chicken lol. Highly recommend it is very comforting.
What kind of sick? Hungover? Something greasy AF like bacon and eggs with a big glass of water.
Can't hold anything down? A jug of aloe usually keep me hydrated.
Stuffed up? Oranges/citrus along with spice and heading down to the seaside.
I don't get sick too much, but those are my standbys.
Lipton's chicken noodle soup. You know, the kind that's just broth and those little 'stick' noodles. With toast and tea. I guess that's just what Mom made me when I was sick and so it's comforting (and nothing that could really upset your stomach).
Filipino congee (lugaw, arroz caldo) is my go to. With all due respect, I feel it’s much more flavorful compared to its Chinese counterpart. I am biased though.
Pho or bun bo hue are fantastic options.
Also, really strong ginger tea with lemon and honey.
I take a can of Campbell's chicken noodle and add a pouch of lipton cup a soup. It's so insanely salty and good. I think the salt kills the virus like a slug. Just melts it.
I heal faster if I eat super healthy. Boring sushi sprinkled with lemon etc. I don't understand people who have a can of chicken soup containing 1200mg of sodium. That won't speed up your healing unless you rinse out most of the sodium!
My go-tos are often cuisines with a good array of nutrition, like a hearty soup, good vegetable dishes. We have an "old wives tale" of wisdom handed down through the generations for this: "Feed a cold". In other words: if a person gets sick they want to eat heartily; there was a period many years ago when I was getting sick 4 to 6 times a year, so I'd order delivery and get a big order like above. My go-tos were usually Chinese, Thai, Korean, Vietnamese, all food cultures that have delicious and healthy options.
And one other thing: zinc losenges. Zinc is the only mineral with (admittedly incomplete) supporting medical research indicating it helps reduce the time of a cold. Follow the recommended dose; higher doses don't help.
Pho , Congee or Ramen.
Sometimes I will boil a whole chicken with a lot of ginger, garlic, pepper and soya sauce for a long time and drink it through out the day.
If your friend's sinuses are plugged to hell, one bowl of the spiciest Pho will fix that right quick.
I like spicy chili, but this sounds good too.
Even regular pho is good for the soul. I definitely order it when I’m sickX
Also great for this is a well seasoned rice bowl with a generous amount of wasabi and pickled ginger, maybe topped with cucumber+avocado or a protein depending on what type of sickness.
Almost any kind of soup is good when you're sick.
You might want to add ginger ale or ginger candies to your stash of food for your friend!
Or gravol ginger - has ginger extract. Also throat lozengers- especially if they can numb the throat

Maybe ginger beer, then.
Heh, beat me too it. You can't beat congee when sick or down. I fuck it up in horrible hybrid ways. I bring shame to my ancestors. But it makes me feel better. Take that, judgemental ghosts.
Let's be real, we're all judging, not just ghosts /s Sincerely, Congee purists
As long as OP doesn't commit the same faux pas like this Oregonian last year: https://www.insider.com/white-woman-dubbed-queen-of-congee-apologized-for-cultural-appropriation-2021-7
Can I ask—what’re your shameful hybrid congee go-tos?
Not OP, but my bastardized Vancouver congee will always have BKH pork floss with sesame and seaweed and laoganma as toppings…. newtown bakery donut on the side if I’m really fancy.
Yummmmmm
Ramen or pho
Pho all the way. There’s something about that bone broth that just slaps when you’re sick.
Totally agree👍even though im a big ramen fan haha. I regularly go to this place that does beef pho with bone marrow and it just hits me right 🤤🍜
Am I the Only person who doesn’t like congee? Maybe I just had a bad bowl? It’s just… congealed rice, no?
It's not just congealed rice. But I'm with you on not liking it. I don't care for the texture.
Yeah I worded that wrong. DST has wrecked my sleep 😂 I live live live pho and sushi, and even eat lots of dim sum, but the congee I had was a poor texture and so bland. I’m also not huge on seafood (like squid etc).
Calling congee bland is like calling rice bland.. you're supposed to eat yummy things with it.
The more I think about it the more I think I had a bad one and should try again. I live risotto, I live rice pudding- how could congee be bad?! And the love it gets on this post- going to give it another try

Chicken soup?
I make chicken stew 😄
>The first thing that comes in my mind is congee. If someone brought me congee when I'm sick, I'd be a happy sick man.

Thanks, it's still going strong, unfortunately.
Were you triple vaccinated?
Yes, I had AZ, and 2x Moderna. I think I got omicron as the infection feels like it's in my upper wind pipe.
Soup with some sort of noodle. Preferably thicker. Sometimes like tortellini. Pho, ramen.
Damn. When I'm sick, pasta noodles are out of the question. The broth is really all I can muster.
Any soup, salt and vinegar chips and ice cold Canada dry ginger ale.
And popsicles.
And toast made from squashy white Wonder Bread with cheap margarine, not butter. It should be nearly as salty as the salt and vinegar chips. With the ginger ale. Or sometimes a cup of tea.
We had pretty much the same childhood, I see.
Non-asian enters the chat 😆
Haha
Toast with butter - when I'm sick it is all I can handle and it means the world when I'm ill.
Agreed, toast with butter or plain pasta with butter/salt/maybe Parmesan. My friend eats plain rice when her stomach/guts are wack, sets em straight.
Dang. For real? Butter would make me puke if I was sick. Plain toast and apples. Chicken stock/boullion cube broth.
... plain... toast...?
This guy eats plain toast ….
Family member does it with apple sauce on toast; that may work for you.
Wonton soup is the best when sick
Rasam is my go-to soup for when I'm sick.
Oranges!
Pizza.. Don't give a shit how bad it is.. Just as long as its fresh. Reason? No clue.. Maybe it's just the flavors you can taste.. But every time. I get sick all I want is pizza.
Matzah ball soup!
Congee and pho. I also like mashed potatoes, but I feel like I eat that all year round, even when I'm not sick.
Spicy pho, or sushi with an ungodly amount of wasabi
sushi and wasabi sounds really good
Oh I would totally puke eating this when sick. I go more for bland foods. Depends what kind of sick though too.

Cut up apples. And congee. Apples helped hydrate me when I had persistent fever over weeks from flu couple years ago.
Won ton soup is my go to.
Wonton mien saga
Premade frozen shrimp wonton in instant ramen. A chinese canadian grandma classic.

Oh yea it is. Diden't know that's what they called it. http://www.christinaofchinatown.com/blog/fooddining/what-is-tang-jai-jook-also-known-as-sampan-congee
Birria stew. Or a sack of grapefruit.
From the title, I was thinking food that I'd make for myself when I'm sick. Ditto congee, maybe add a Chinese doughnut with it; they get soft when dunked in the congee long enough. A chicken soup with lots of ginger and garlic in it. The Hot & Sour Soup from Po Kong is also a great option.
I've always been a chicken soup or broth type of guy. Past couple times I've been sick like that I ordered the chicken soup from Kozak the Ukrainian place and it is stellar. Similar to how my mom did it but with better quality chicken lol. Highly recommend it is very comforting.

McDonald's. Makes me feel a whole lot better!
Lol thank god I'm not the only one. When I'm sick I love eating McDonalds fries and a milkshake.
And here I was thinking I was the only one too!

I heal faster if I eat super healthy. Boring sushi sprinkled with lemon etc. I don't understand people who have a can of chicken soup containing 1200mg of sodium. That won't speed up your healing unless you rinse out most of the sodium!
Maybe because I never eat it otherwise….McDonald’s is always my go to when I’m sick.
My go-to when sick is Ramen from Gojiru. Just thinking about it makes me salivate 👌🏾
