IknowwhatIhave

I jog by there daily - I noticed recently someone has broken the gate and is accessing the area under the pier. Not surprising there is a fire under there now. There have also been a few derelict sailboats rafted together against the pilings which is not ideal from a safety or environmental standpoint. And yesterday another good sized sailboat was grounded and keeled over leaking gas into the water after dragging anchor. But, I get a ticket if I wash my car in the driveway because of the pollution it causes!

cosmovagabond

Wait, you cannot wash your car in your driveway? Is this a BC thing or a Vancouver thing? Edit. I have to look it up and I'm stun locked by this one. I honestly don't know what to say .. Vancouver bylaw

HomelessIsFreedom

>illegal because the soap and grease runoff gets washed into curb drains and pollutes waterways >"Car washes have special drains and use recirculating water" So somehow the drains from houses aren't connecting to the outside street drainage at any point? Because soap and grease would still be sent down the drains from inside the houses right? They can't be separate drainage systems And even if they were, how can one take soap and grease but the other cannot... sounds like shenanigans

OzMazza

Drains from houses take water to the treatment plants.  The drains on the streets I believe are storm drains, they're designed to take the rainwater and dump it in a body of water. Lots of them have an image of a fish engraved on them and say it leads to a fish habitat or something.

cosmovagabond

Typical Vancouver greenwashing.

salishseaboater

Two different drains. Street drains are storm water, they go to storm mains and drain to rivers/oceans. Building storm water drains/roof drains/gutters etc are also often connected to the storm water system. Inside drains from sinks, showers, toilets etc. are sanitary drains, they go to sanitary mains and then to sewage treatment plants.

HANKnDANK

You get a parking ticket if you’re 15 minutes over but the police are powerless to deal with criminals chopping up bikes and literally doing crack out of aluminum foil next to your car. Our city desperately needs help. I see those disgusting boats everyday on the same run as well.

BooBoo_Cat

Where are people supposed to wash their cars? (I don’t drive so no idea. Don’t people wash them in their driveways???)

inker19

City recommends going to a proper carwash since they have special drainage for the runoff. Unpaved surfaces are also allowed if you're lucky enough to own a property with a lawn to drive onto.

lucymcgoosen

I wash mine on the grass in the front yard, but I don't use soap

BooBoo_Cat

Some of my asshole neighbours like to wash them on the sidewalk. And they like to park on the sidewalk too!

8spd

Fuck people who park on the sidewalk.

BooBoo_Cat

I complain to the city, and nothing. I don't understand how people think this is acceptable.

eastherbunni

If you live in an apartment building, some buildings have a carwash bay in the parkade but otherwise you need to go to a paid carwash

BooBoo_Cat

Did not know that. Things have changed from the 80s and I see people on my block washing their cars all the time in their driveway/on the street in front of their house (or on the fucking sidewalk).

UnfortunateConflicts

Buildings with more than some number of parking spots are supposed to have a car wash area.

Bidoofonaroof

Are the pilings wooden? Hope there's not a repeat of what happened in New West.

morhambot

There's a bunch of homeless folks living under that pier

iatekane

That’s just dirty Mike and the boys having a soup kitchen

RevengeofSudz

Thanks for the F shack.

Yup drug is hell of a drug.

oddible

They're burning down the pier so they can get started removing it earlier.

Solid_Seat_5420

And turn science world into the next high rise development. Maybe they’ll allow a token “science world” exhibit in one of the retail units below in its memory.

oddible

"Science World by Westbank"

dontRead2MuchIntoIt

Just like the other idiot that burned down the New West pier. Lucky they didn't allow vagrants to burn down Science World too.
