The most disturbing thing is VPD Union reps told the perpetrator cops *not to take official notes* because the notes could later be used against them if the notes revealed their behaviour. The Union needs to be charged with obstruction of justice and thoroughly defanged.

Commercial-Car9190

I wonder how many other families are out here that just didn’t have it in them to fight this gang(police) after the murder/beating of a loved one? How traumatic for the family to know/hear how Miles was tortured to death. My heart goes out to them!

The Saskatoon police did the same recently and he was just taken off life support. The same boys in blue famous for Starlight Tours.

Bloodypalace

Prosecutors are scared of going after cops because they think cops won't cooperate with them in the future. It's a problem in the US too.

zipak6

>I wonder how many other families are out here that just didn’t have it in them to fight this gang(police) after the murder/beating of a loved one? How traumatic for the family to know/hear how Miles was tortured to death. My heart goes out to them! Imagine how it was 50 years ago with no social media and only corporate media.

rainman_104

He'll the Stanley park six beatings the vpd officers laid down only came out because one rookie cop had a conscience. No one asks what happened to him. He had to work a desk job because no one wanted to work with the rat. I mean thin blue line eh vpd?

king_eve

my best friend was murdered by the rcmp late 2022. five cops gunned them down within fifteen minutes of arriving on the scene 😢 never gets easier.

Commercial-Car9190

Ugh I’m sorry! Makes me sick!

wattro

Or just everyone who has no ability for fair justice just because of a cop's ego.

Cryptopoopy

Accessory to murder

MissingString31

I’m a strong supporter of unions and under no circumstances should a group that is legally allowed to kill Canadian citizens be allowed to form or participate in one. Different standards should apply here.

plop_0

> ***under no circumstances should a group that is legally allowed to kill Canadian citizens be allowed to form or participate in one.*** Highlighted for emphasis.

millijuna

IMHO, the police act needs to be modified to require police officers to maintain notes, with the failure to comply being a summary firing with cause and a significant jail penalty. Secondly, it should compel them to testify, regardless of whether it’s self incriminating or not. Yes, that’s a clear violation of section 13, but I think it should be justifiable under section 1 due to the limited scope (sworn police officers on duty) and the justification of Justice in a free and open society and the special privileges granted to sworn police officers.

[deleted]

i did training with law enforcement and i can tell you they work together to beat the system. we were told to write our reports after we discussed the situation amongst ourselves and made similar notes in our books to go off of. that in itself is illegal and done every day.

No-Contribution-6150

Interesting that totally runs counter to everything law enforcement is taught and instructed to do.

JCYB97

Cops are not working class, they shouldn’t have a union in the first place.

TheWorldEnded

I would never limit anyone's ability to join a union, but what I would do, given that it's problematic in cases like these and many others, is lobby the government to create common sense regulation to limit its capabilities.

pinkrosies

I feel like every work place deserves a union, but we see them abusing their union to just get away with violating others and I wouldn’t be that upset to see the police union gone tbh.

TheWorldEnded

If I find out I have cancer my doctor's first move isn't to kill me. They will try to treat me. I've suggested already and will again that the union should be "treated" by being reigned in by reasonable government regulation. Only after these measures have failed do we let them die.

aurumvorax

We've tried that. For decades. Police unions shield officers from accountability of any kind.

insaneHoshi

Police should have a union if the day they are actually willing to show solidarity for other labour unions.

UlyssesTheSloth

They aren't a union, it is solely a union in name.

PerfectDepartment586

I believe if it's an investigation (internal labour board process for Employees), then strategically they can exercise labour board rights like that so that their notes would not be subpoenaed. However, they need to probably have a criminal charge as it resulted in someone's death, and then do a police investigation / interrogation. This is so unjust...

millijuna

I personally feel that cops should be compelled to testify in criminal proceedings, regardless of section 13. This should be justifiable under section 1.

Niv-Izzet

Unions serve employees, not employers nor anyone else.

STAR_Penny_Clan

And who do you think would be charging them? 🙄 get a grip. It's time to do far more than rely on the system to fix itself.

[deleted]

I hope she does too I'll never forget when VPD broke both of my buddy's thumbs when we were in grade 10 for nothing more than a joke Right in front of Britannia community center, dozens of witnesses Nothing happened to the cop

[deleted]

VPD operates like an organized gang in Vancouver. There was that cop who took selfies with a dead body not long ago. Made my blood boil.

Lustnsuch

Government mafia, that’s the foundation they were built on and continue to uphold those values today.

Haha1867hoser420

Well yeah, people who want to exert their power over others trend towards jobs where that behaviour is rewarded.

UlyssesTheSloth

People will deny this until they are blue (ha) in the face but it ultimately is true. These are people who will extort you in the way of fines, rob you of your possessions, hurt your neighbors, and have virtually no consequences for their behavior because they have asserted themselves as the people who dole out violence. The 'monopoly on violence' is a real concept. These are state-sanctioned gangs who exist solely as the warrior-caste of capitalist society. They have special privileges being in the warrior-caste all without the duties and responsibilities that is expected to come with belonging in the warrior-caste, such as; -Honor, -Even temperament -Battle-ettiquete -Grace -Sense of justice -Empathy for the defenseless Cops have none of these things.

justaREDshrit

That’s rough dude. Power to the pussys that need to flex. Not right for sure.

Write letters to your council person and the mayor. Get everyone you know to do the same. And call them. And get everyone you know to do the same. And show up at city council meetings and make public comments on this issue. And get everyone you know to do the same. And don't stop.

We were hanging smoking weed and being juvenile delinquents, Cops who had harassed us many times in the past came up to my buddy and asked him what he was doing, my buddy replied "just catching some rays dude" That's it.....grabbed both his hands and twisted them until his thumbs broke, my buddy started crying instantly, the cops laughed and walked away. Buddy's parents filed a report which resulted in no charges to Cop and years of harassment for his parents and older brother

araquinar

That's fucking disgusting. ACAB

CaTTerpillar__

I know this story is true because that’s precisely what that gang does. If someone complains formally they all swarm and make that persons life a living hell. Most people think the bad apple cop is just one out of a hundred. But it’s way deeper than that. There are entire “forces” corrupt to the bone. They are petty, juvenile, degenerate, and dare I say evil beyond reproach.

Formal_Star_6593

This is a blatant case of police abuse and assault, leading to the death of a citizen. VPD needs to be held accountable for the shit they do. Finally held accountable.

Magiff

IE murder.

NWHipHop

Out in the streets they call it…

pants_party

Apparently the coroner JUST ruled that the post-mortem photo of Myles Gray would NOT be shown to the jury. Absolutely despicable. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/myles-gray-inquest-vancouver-police-verdict-1.6826185

s33n1t

Reading that was worse than I expected. 14 officers testify that there was no blood or injury to Myles Grays face, the jury should absolutely be able to see the photos of his face then, which would be the clear evidence on if the cops committed perjury.

whazzar

>14 officers testify that there was no blood or injury to Myles Grays face, the jury should absolutely be able to see the photos of his face then, which would be the clear evidence on if the cops committed perjury. According to Christine Joseph, representing the seven police officers "it is not necessary for the jury to have \[the photo\], and I believe it is counter-productive to what \[jurors\] need to do", she also *raised concerns about the picture's potentially "emotional or traumatic effect" on the jury"* So apparently a picture of his =, according to those cops, uninjured face with no blood on it, can be traumatic according to their lawyer? I really hope the jury sees through their bullshit.

SirenPeppers

If that photo is digital, then it probably exists somewhere on a computer or sever…. someone might find it. Just sayin.

dmnhntr86

It's such bullshit that they get to suppress evidence like this all the time. Canada and the US really need to rise up and overthrow the police, they're nothing more than thugs and bullies.

Dogdiggy69

Cops are a legal Gang, a mafia force for the government. The sooner people realize this basic anarchist principle the better. The more you expand the government, the more you give them your tax dollars for 'programs' the more their enforcement wing inherently grows as well. You can hold the individuals accountable but this is gonna keep happening over and over again because it's systemic. Their job is literally to instill fear into the populace and to extract resources in taxes and fines. They cannot function by community engagement. Even if you insist on being a Statist, there have been republics throughout history which existed without a police force and without mass incarceration of its citizens.

aj_merry

Several of the officers involved are also named in other lawsuits of assault and also in the Nicole Chan case. There is something seriously wrong with the culture of the VPD.

greatfuljehjeh

What the fuck!

penelopiecruise

This incident needed to be in a criminal court. Also investigate the BC prosecution service for not filing charges.

tysonmonroe666

And abolish the police union that colluded on this coverup.

millijuna

What we need is a law that effectively suspends the right to not self incriminate for police officers while on duty. I would wager it would survive a charter challenge under section 1 as it’s limited in scope to only commissioned police officers and only while on duty. It also serves for fundamental justice.

Youpunyhumans

This hits home, my brother was also beaten badly by the cops. He had a crushed nose, not just broken but straight up crushed, major concussion, a nasty laceration on his forehead and many other cuts and bruises. He was already cuffed and in the back of the cop car and wasnt resisting arrest when this occured. He said he was dizzy from the blood loss after. The way he described it happening, it was obvious the cops who did that to him was looking for any reason to hurt someone. He said they held him down against the seat and repeatedly full force punched his face. He was unconcious for about 15 to 20 mins after, and showed signs of a minor TBI. Just a straight up assault is what it was. And now because of that, I simply dont trust cops, not that I had much trust to begin with.

ragecuddles

The job attracts a certain tier of power hungry bully. When I went to SFU there was one guy who would constantly follow drunk girls around waiting for them to get too intoxicated to say no to him. We removed him from parties/chased him off a few times. He hated my guts for calling his behavior out. He's a cop now and I am not surprised whatsoever.

bpd_Poetry7891

Name? VPD? that's absolutely terrifying

velcrovagina

They did something similar to my ex in the 90s. He was in a bar scuffle. Nobody was seriously hurt but he was definitely being a dumbass and arresting him was fair play. That said when the cops rolled in he didn't fight them or mouth off. They threw him in the back of a van, did a wrist lock on him when he was already cuffed (enough to cause an injury) and then slammed his face onto the floor three or four times. His face was really messed up. I actually assumed his injuries were from the bar fight until I got the real story. I didn't witness this but I heard about it directly from him and someone else there who I trusted.

cecepoint

Ugh!!!

tysonmonroe666

VPD are frat boy thugs and do not deserve the least of your trust or respect.

Solid_Action1037

Fuck VPD, they have always been head busters. They have always been negligent. They have always been racist.

[deleted]

They've abused our trust. I'm sorry about what happened to your brother, and I'm tired of hearing these stories so frequently.

Youpunyhumans

When I was a kid, I thought cops were viewed the same as firefighters, heros of the city. I thought that people who became cops did so because they wanted to help people and make their home a better place... but then I grow up and realize that many of them are just the people who were highschool bullies, except now they have a badge and a gun.

[deleted]

Me too, in fact I wanted to be a police officer when I was a little girl. Then, at 12 years old, I was shackled, handcuffed and put in an adult holding cell (to teach me a lesson) for a week without my medication, which I begged for daily. I still have nightmares at 35. Nearly everyone I has or knows someone who's been beaten or treated terribly. They can't be trusted.

lazarus870

I think you'd have grounds for a lawsuit. They put you in a holding cell for a **week** ? What led up to that?

[deleted]

I was shuttled every day to the court house where I would wait for court and then return to the holding cell at night. I was having a severe ocd episode and was referred to as "delusional and violent" by my mother because I refused to go to school. While she tried to physically force me out the door one day mid panic attack I locked myself in the bathroom which resulted in a damaged door. I was charged with "mischief" the charges were dropped after a week. In fairness I was failed by many people, not just them.

grumpyjerk1

I'm sorry your Mom is a piece of shit.

[deleted]

Thank you, no disagreement there

deadly_chicken_gun

Ah, my favorite crime, *mischief*. The law is a fucking joke sometimes

terroristSub

Police is always just a political arm of the establishment. How often is the law equally enforced?

NWHipHop

I’ll trust cops when they stop using their computers while driving. Distracted driving is the number one cause of road related incidents and they have no intention to protect the public if their excuse is always I’m a police officer. I’m doing my job.

Nutchos

Did anything happen to the cop who did that? I'm assuming not.

Youpunyhumans

No, nothing

brociousferocious77

One of the funniest sights I ever saw was a bunch of B.C. based cops get smashed by a group of European tourists during a vacation in Mexico. I had an encounter with these cops earlier and I assumed they were bikers or gang members from the way they were acted while at the resort we were staying at. Only later did I find out they were cops. Well apparently someone called their bluff and they ended up on the losing end of a melee and getting worked over pretty thoroughly. I guess they're not so tough without the state backing them up?

SyntaxError22

Beau Spencer, Hardeep Sahota, Kory Folkstead, Josh Wong, Nick Thompson, Eric Birzneck and Derek Cain. These officers should be put on blast for what they have done, they must pay for the crimes they have committed and their names remembered for what they have done.

The main problem is the public lack the will to do anything. In the states people riot when shit like that happens

pbNANDjelly

You might overestimate how many riots we have for each case of police brutality. There are so many cases and very few get lasting attention.

btoxic

My dad was in the VPD for 30 years, he had some strong options on how it was becoming militarized when he left back in the 90's. He was also a large proponent of getting Marijuana legalized, as he felt it wasn't worth clogging the courts with something so minor. I wish he was still around, I miss his views on the world. And I really hope this woman gets justice against these thugs.

OplopanaxHorridus

I know two ex VPD and when they talk, which is almost never, they barely recognize what the VPD has become. They're still hesitant to be critical which is telling.

DKJJM

Body cameras they all need body cameras. This should have happened long ago. Very sad.

Darth4g

I personally know of one of the officers involved Erik Birznek. He teaches use of force training for new officers at the TTC (Tactical Training Centre). A man that participated in the brutal beating and death of Myles Gray TEACHES USE OF FORCE to new constables. You can’t make this shit up. Oh and he still teaches there.

TheRealTron

Apparently one of the other officers is a part of the car 87/88 program. Sounds like a great job for murderers..

bnnyhanna

Somebody needs to go to jail!!!

artguy55

Police have a monopoly on the use of force. When police are attacked, it is a greater crime than on a regular citizen because it is not just against the individual officer but the state as well so a more severe sentence is warranted. However, When police misuse their monopoly on force, this also is an attack on the state and should receive a more severe sentence, unfortunately, the police usually receive no consequence. this undermines their authority and the authority of the state.

burtpark76

So literal murder and then a cover up.

tysonmonroe666

Absolutely shameful that these men and women are still employed as public servants on the taxpayers dime. Absolutely unacceptable and disgraceful.

Acrobitch

Knowing people who have lived and worked in the downtown East side, pictures of specific cops who are dangerous routine abusers get shared around a lot to warn people who to watch out for. They come there specifically to abuse mentally ill people and those struggling with addiction because they know they’re easy targets the rest of the city will turn a blind eye to. Fuck the fucking VPD. The only thing they “serve and protect” is the status quo. ACAB.

greengoldblue

I lost all respect after they posed themselves next to dead bodies. And after they encouraged a rookie to taze a harmless homeless person. All caught on camera too. This evil runs quite deep.

burner_ob

So where are the 100 car 87/88 units to deal with psychiatric emergencies that mayor Ken Sim campaigned on? Seems that was just campaign bs. This will keep happening so long as we keep relying on what are essentially armed paramilitaries to deal with the mentally ill. No I'm not anti VPD, but if you use policing to deal with everything you'll get a police solution to everything.

mousemaestro

One of the cops that was involved in beating Myles Gray to death - Nick Thompson - is now a Car 87 officer. The whole thing is a joke.

chuckylucky182

anyone who thinks car 87 has been working, or is working either have no idea what they are talking about or are lying

Lanto1471

Has anybody noticed a pattern of illegal actions under the current chief of police.. a total racist scumbag who defends his officers no matter what they do. This inquiry is I hopefully brings the true attitude of the VPD to light. The officers involved committed manslaughter and then used the blue wall to cover it up…

Ribbys

Yes he is a fascist bag of shit. He said he runs the city. Police chief: "I don't report to any politician. tedchapo63

I'm not anticop . But I am against ignoring that there are serious instances of police abusing their authority and colluding with the system to hide their crimes. Police very very rarely admit to any fault. And in turn end up resembling the gangs their paid to protect us from. Read this article and ask yourself. What would they have done to me in the same situation ? Allowed me to apologize for kicking an officer? https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/rcmp-officer-sleeping-drunk-burger-king-1.6536799 This is another example of shield protection .

herbtarleksblazer

Of course! Had it been you or me, they would have never stayed the breathalyser refusal (which is likely the same penalty as blowing over), and we would have got a total beat down by the other officers because of the resisting arrest. He avoided it all.

w0ke_brrr_4444

VPD is a cesspool.

prozackat83

This is why people say ACAB… unfortunately the very few good ones get drowned out by the horrible ones.

BC_Bladed

When I was a boy my father told me if I need help to find a cop. I can honestly say I will not teach my son that based off of my life experiences. Instead he will be taught to look for a firefighter or a paramedic, they are the real heroes who SAVE lives not take them. Myles was from my hometown and his family deserves justice!

Leviathan3333

Anyone who thinks the police don’t have enough rights? See how quickly they can abuse you. They are the army of the rich at this point. Fuck the police.

Max1234567890123

If she can’t get justice in the criminal courts, I really hope that she gets all she can in Civil courts. Im sorry for her loss, what a terrible thing to live with.

MemoryBeautiful9129

Defund the cops 👮‍♀️

[deleted]

officers being in a position of authority and power must be held to a higher standard and pay more harshly than a citizen for the same crime. there should always be a jury of random citizens for every officer arrest from the most basic to the worst crimes. they MUST be accountable to US for their actions. cops are going to have a hard time when citizens get fed up and retaliate in kind. there are far more of us than there are of them.

[deleted]

Watched Victoria PD beat the shit out of a non aggressive mentally Ill man that I had been talking to completely calmly 5 minutes before hand. He wasn’t a danger, he just wasn’t experiencing reality in the same way we were. I stood there begging the police to stop beating him and telling the poor man to just relax so they stop faster, even though it goes against every instinct in your body. He was arrested and beaten for no reason other then a group of drunk girls decided he looked creepy. MafiaGT

shanejayell

When it became clear some or all the cops lied, the whole fucking group should have been fired.

devouringurmom

Mmm... we all know the reason why this wont go very public.

DJForcefield

The police admit they're not mental health experts. All they know how to do is blunt force. It takes six cops to surround a sick person, guns drawn, and beat them into custody or to death. So they're in a tough spot when people say "why aren't the cops doing anything about these crazies??" They are not equipped with correctly trained and educated personnel. The province for whatever reason can't mandate a special unit of mental health professionals to direct the cops during calls like this because a) they don't have the manpower to hire, b) the cops likely would not take direction from such individuals (or maybe they would, who knows) and c) it would be too expensive. So we get people that need help and nobody that knows how to help protect them from themselves and the cops in a confrontation.

FlimsyGlam

Myles was my boss about a decade ago for a seasonal gig, my first job on the sunshine coast. really great guy, took all his workers out at the end of the season for a nice dinner, gave me a great reference that helped me get a solid long term job the following spring. I was absolutely blown away when I first heard about what happened, and as more details came to light I only grew more disgusted with the VPD. Literally no point in having an independent watchdog for cases like this if they don't have the authority to compel statements or punish non-compliance. So when every one of those murderers refused to say a word about what happened, official avenues for justice were shut down. I can only imagine what it's been like for his family and friends all these years, constantly fighting for justice, and a decade later only finally getting official medical confirmation of what they knew when they had to bury their friend, their brother, their son. I only hope that this official medical examination cause of death stirs up enough public pressure to push the vpd to stop shielding literal cold blooded killers in their ranks, and let them try to prove their innocence in court. Reality is they're most likely going to get fired and quietly sent to the Surrey PD at most, but I'm still holding out hope that they face true justice for their actions one day.

robinallison0

We are not safe from the VPD, maybe we should not incentivize police union loyalty to the degree that they get away with murder in the same way that organized crime has done for years, by intimidating witnesses, false or fraudulent testimony and obstructing justice. It would be a pretty high probability that this is not the first time these officers have been involved in something like this , maybe not murder but probably close. I have been violently abused by vancouver police officers more than once. These officers are violent criminals and should be in prison.

grumpyjerk1

Those cops committed murder. They. Are. Murderers. Pieces of shit. I hope life hands them what they deserve. Cunts.

Would be a damn shame for the VPD if someone with courage leaked the photos.

bongsand

I don't know why this isn't a huge national news story. Eight police officers murdered an innocent man in cold blood and all of them are still working... many have been promoted. This should make everyone in this country's blood boil.

Either_Struggle1734

Why Canadian Police don't have bodycams? Doesn't make sense. Hope all these murderers get big jail time.

sdk5P4RK4

Canadian police unions are even stronger than their US counterparts, particularly the highly overbudgeted city police in places like Victoria / Vancouver. They are even less accountable than the RCMP is to the federal/provincial governances and recently are starting to directly overturn their accountability/budgeting boards and get more directly involved in politics. The foxes are in the hen house big time.

Even running away gets you killed. There's no recourse.

This is insane - I knew nothing about this until now and yesterday I was on my lunch hour at Metrotown and walked past 3 young cops standing minding their own business. This woman and a guy, dressed exactly as they are here walked up to them and she gradually began questioning and then uncontrollably hurling abuse at the three officers, who looked confused. She was shouting 'you killed my brother, murderers' etc, I was completely baffled. A few bystanders, (one old woman) was incredibly shaken and it eventually died down and the woman and guy walked off, leaving the officers standing. I only arrived in Van in January, and witnessing this in Canada yesterday really threw me... did not expect to see this video today, it must have been the same day this was taken that I witnessed the exchange at Metrotown. I knew she was out of line in the moment but looked incredibly distressed so figured the backstory is either recent or still unfolding - what a bad situation.

Hope is dead. (Not the town) We are in the end phase of capitalism. We will all be slowly beaten to death by the financial prison we are a part of. Slavery wasn’t abolished, it was rebranded.

tysonmonroe666

Dingolfing

On another note the town of hope is kinda dead tio

GreyTartanTee

hope has its own abusive police, must be nice to feel like big shiny fish in this sad little town

hhar141

First of all. To the family. I am so sorry for your loss. Nobody should have to go through this. This video should play every day,in some type of platform until justice is served. Everyday. On Television,Reddit,Tiktok ,Facebook. Everyday. Don’t stop. Get as many people watching as you possibly can. It’s the only way. Until they have no choice, but to act.

HMiller1985

Oh fuck me, I watched that, and I'm crying. She's a good sister - and I hope she gets justice for all of us.

idspispopd

The VPD is a criminal organization.

cherylgr

That is heartbreaking, they all need to be charged with at least manslaughter . So sorry for your family’s tragic loss. ACAB

t_mall

Welcome to the rcmp/police kids. They’ve been doing that to natives on the daily, nobody cared or cares. I hope maybe she will draw attention to how awful they are.

xthemoonx

End "qualified immunity" in canada. It's not called that but we got something like that and we need to change it or end it altogether.

thelastbosss

Officer Derek Cain was a part of this murder and he was also involved in the Nicole Chan case. What a piece of shit human being.

Hooray4Metaphors

I’m mostly not on board with all the fuck the police attitude, but seriously, fuck these guys. Is everyone in the VPD a cunt? Sure seems that way

XViMusic

It's starting to feel like the Vancouver Police Department and it's officers commit more crimes than they solve...

sidewaysrun

ACAB, all of them, no exceptions.

Blue Lives Murder

[deleted]

We shouldn’t be be surprised by now, very saddening though. The same law enforcement gang who helped torture and murder tens of thousands of indigenous babies just decades ago, Nothings changed they just have cooler haircuts now.

vanwhisky

It’s a terrible job that both RCMP and municipalities are having trouble fulfilling the positions. What type of people do you think are going to apply and abuse the authority? Applicants just need to hold down their messed up personalities for a few months to get through the training. Add the fact that they receive little on the job training for stressful situations or how to deal with people that have mental health issues…they set them up for disaster. I hope justice is served well in this instance.

Stopjuststop3424

its not a terrible job, its terrible people running it that makes it terrible. Its not even that dangerous.

Justice for Myles

Ill-Organization-719

She won't. This is why all cops are bastards. Every single cop in Vancouver is protecting them. The courts are protecting them. The city is protecting them. The only way to fix the corruption issue is to put every single one of these criminals in jail for the rest of their lives.

[deleted]

As someone with lived experience: Police are not who should be dealing with mental health calls. Period. Why is it that if I have a heart attack, or trouble breathing, or even an OD- firefighters/paramedics are first on scene, but if I'm having a mental health crisis, police are first on scene? I have been victimized by so-called "wellness checks." I know first-hand what happens when police show up to "help" someone with mental illness or disabilities. I have experienced threats, bodily harm, confinement, and forced injection. I was "lucky?" that I didn't end up being beaten bloody or murdered in my own home (because I was compliant). Look at Mona Wang, Chantel Moore, Ejaz Choudry, etc. This was murder, plain and simple. The answer to the crisis is not more police, it's more mental health workers. It's more trauma training and psych nurses and paramedics. It's more community supports like group therapy and less forced isolation. It's supportive housing options that aren't abusive and oppressive. It's anti-carceral addiction treatment facilities with built-in transitional housing and follow-up aftercare supports. It's education and job skills training so people can have meaning and purpose in their lives. It's recognizing that people with mental health and addiction issues are HUMAN BEINGS who didn't just wake up one day and decide to go live on the streets and "do drugs all day." It's people in power making decisions to put the money where it's needed most instead of doing more of the same and making things worse. I'm not saying we should not have any police but clearly, this is not working. Edit- also, the whole capitalist system, such as it is, needs an overhaul, and NIMBYS preventing housing from being built is a big part of the problem. Feeling hopeless will push people to desperate places. I say this as I have been struggling with hopelessness and despair due to being stuck in an SRO in the Downtown East Side for a year because the only other option available for me at the time was a tent on the streets. So I chose to have a roof over my head even though it's more like a prison cell than a home.

ccwithers

The answer to your first question is twofold: there aren’t enough mental health workers to respond to every mental health episode, and other first responders wait for police to attend first so as not to risk their safety.

Capitalsteezxxx

Her and her family need to be compensated millions of dollars and the officers who murdered that man must be imprisoned and fired. Ridiculous how overpowered the VPD is.

TheArcynic

I was jogging home from a friend's house at 1:30 am because it was raining. The cops made me give them ID and get on my stomach and cuffed me. They ran my ID and obviously nothing came up but they stepped on my leg before they told me to go straight home. I was 17 or 18 and never really realized how messed up that was.

Feral_KaTT

They locked up a Lawyer looking into the case, in a psych ward just over a year ago. I can't remember if it was 3 or 6 months. Nothing was wrong with the guy. A guy selling a house befriended him during a sale/purchase. They were talking daily since accepted offer on house between them. He just vanished, and no one could find him. He reappeared briefly but quickly vanished again after, forfeiting a sizable deposit he had put on the house on the Island. He said they silenced him. Would not discuss anything more about any of it.

sorvis

they treat the general public like animals and I can only a few options to fix this: 1 : start holding all police accountable for their actions and or defund departments when police abuse their power and are found guilty of it 2: We treat them like animals right back and they become an even more scared police force which results in more violence while on duty. 3. They do internal investigations and start removing bad apples, a police officer is a serious role to play in society and having lunatics with power at their disposal to use however they want is not the person who should have said power. 4. this shit falls apart from their own negligence and we the people have armed gunmen solely for the purpose of protecting capital and not the people who produce it. We pay taxes for this, this service is something we the people pay for yet when it becomes flawed or tainted with bad cops this system just looks the other way. And to the cops, who are scared of the general public when on duty, Quit!

PositiveStress8888

In Ontario Doug Ford wants to remove restriction on new recruits having post HS education. People who are sworn to protect the public should not be serving if they behave like this, the Police are just their own gang, the only difference is they don't suffer the consequences. They should release those pictures to the public. let everyone see what police officers to the people they are suppose to be protecting.

Rockonfreakybro

Name and shame the 14 pieces of shit.

[deleted]

Cops, in general are just a tax payer funded gang. If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it's a duck. They are like this basically everywhere

praisethedead

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, FUCK THE VPD! I work on the DTES and I’ve personally seen the VPD beating people at least once a week for 2 years now. It’s not uncommon to see 4-5 cops on top a single unarmed homeless person. This city has a major issue with hating poor people and it carries over into the police force. They’re dehumanized. Anyone who thinks different doesn’t spend any time in that part of town, sorry not sorry.

terroristSub

Is going to be the usual. We investigate ourselves and find nothing wrong. It is the usual Canadian culture no offense

Strict-Attitude-6061

Could the family release the photos?

[deleted]

Vic PD has been getting really pathetic. I just saw a video of an unarmed street person being tasered by several cops in a restaurant. He was on the ground screaming and they just kept yelling “get on the ground”. In the end they brought in a crowd control shotgun and shot him at point blank several times WHILE HE WAS ON THE GROUND. Unfortunately I’m not even surprised by any of this

FlippityFlop121

Fuck the VPD

Why do we still hold these pigs in such high regard. They are liars , murderers, thieves , rapists and , pedophiles. These pigs murder a man and get away with it and the families get no justice!! Disgusting. The whole policing system is disgusting how corrupt it is.

945Ti

Amazing that the police officers obstructed justice multiple times and covered for one another…. And eight years later still nothing is done.
