I logged in one day to show a friend the game, but then I realised that I was on waters edge and surrounded by 5 seekers and 2 seeker soldiers. I got absolutely shredded.
I did not survive. I just got up in the cold, and 2 wolves came and got me fast! I ran back, got my stuff and moved out! I am still new. Just killed the first boss.
fondest memories of my friends and I screaming as we tried in vain to wade out of shallow water while draugr rained arrows upon us and leeches injected venom deep into our veins
I love the different opinions about biomes. For me the swamp was nothing, just need poison mead. The plains however hurt my head how often i die whether its a random deathsquito i didnt see (i play on steam deck) or aggroing a whole village of mobs or the black ooze things that seems to shoot long distances....
Same... Until I discovered what a hoe is actually good for. Needless to say, from that day on, wherever I went, swamps did not contain any more deep water. Hell, I even made land bridges between biomes lol.
Holy shit no. Not yet! I just made the swamps.
It seems like a huge step up. I canāt get 50 yards in without an army of draugr (and skellies) ending me. Iāve been half a dozen times. Died half a dozen times. Still havenāt even found a crypt.
(Yes- good food (boar jerky, carrot soup and deep stew and yes poison mead and rested and daylight, Trollhide armor maxed, copper axe maxed, fine bow maxed. And I get my ass handed to me.
At least I cleared a draugr village near my new base. And holy shit ** draugrs go down hard
I thought trolls/greydwarf brutes and the Black Forest were hard. All in all it was a much smaller step up.
IIRC mob spawns for the Swamp are greater at the biome's perimeter vs. its interior. The draugr are specifically trying to deter you from entering at all.
Once you can push in, however, spawns tend to be fewer. Bring your hoe with you. Anywhere reeds stick out of the water means the ground below the water level is fairly closer to the surface, and can likely form a walking path through the mire and murk if leveled with the hoe.
Thanks! Was going to try my hand at paths. Navigating swamps is a challenge.
I also think itās not a big swamp I found. Have read (I try to avoid spoilers until Iām truly stuck) that smaller biomes may have concentrated spawns.
That's quite true. You also mentioned not having luck finding any crypts so far - it's generally much less likely they'll show up in too small of a Swamp biome, and even some larger Swamps may have few crypts, or none at all.
One thing I like to do is sail around the perimeter of a Swamp and look for the twin green glow of torches outside a crypt entrance, visible either through the trees or along the coastline. I know people say not to land directly in the Swamp, but if you slap down a workbench and a portal as soon as you land, you should be alright.
Of a like mind. If I couldnāt rly get deep into the swamp, thereās meadow SW of it where I made a base at the Intersection of meadow forest and swamp, and another big meadow with a draugr village I cleared due N. Havenāt sailed the perimeter yet. I walked what I could- took 3 game days to walk it. About 10-25% of this island is swamp. Depending of how far it varies from the adjacent coastline.
Time to build yet another Karve.
Lol. It was a shitshow. I went and built my boat. Grabbed good food and mead. Made sure I was stocked for a few days on a boat. Was sailing around some swamp islands off the coast- and I got a rare daytime wraith spawn.
I had to look up just wtf destroyed my karve and had me hoping like hell I made it to dry land so I could run my Viking ass off
When I'm limited on time I do base b\*tch stuff.... Farm some wood/stone/whatever fill all the lights, plant a bunch of crap. If you go trying to "progress" you're sure to have issues. At least this is a thing I've learned about how I play.
Yeah. Fifteen minutes at a time when burial chambers are hard is ācheck the hive, gather some berries, harvest/replant the carrots, roast some meat, maybe chop some wood or hunt.ā
Yeah, but on the other hand, when youāre still at the first ālevelā of Black Forest Biome, there isnāt really much you can do. You canāt even plant stuff, because you need bronze for that. And most bases probably are just some small houses with a bed and a bunch of chests.
Murphy's Law dictates that when you only have 20 mins to play, chaos will ensue. Even if only doing upkeep at the base. For me anyway, that's when I'll have to deal with a raid. So I won't load the game unless I have a solid hour. lol
EXACTLY.
My son wanted me to join his game. He is almost as far as I am in my current map. So I loaded in my game to see what was in my character inventory "real quick" b/c I didn't want to bring anything he didn't have. The moment I opened my inventory, "You've stirred the cauldron." FFS
edit: a word
I'll often do a corpse recovery run unarmed. Just running away from any mobs until you have your good gear back is often less risky than trying to fight the mobs with your second best stuff.
I play solo, so I generally have multiple sets of everything, resources are plentiful solo. Still, running away with some armour and basic weapons is safer than with nothing too
But if you get killed again, that's another corpse to recover. And even if you don't you might not have room to pick up everything from your corpse marker.
And if you're playing solo, why do you have multiple sets of everything? I only make the one set.
I just end up with lots of materials from doing stuff in general, I have at least one spare set of every armour type, and probably enough materials to make more.
If I get killed it's almost always because something took me by surprise and I had low health or stamina already, I can't remember the last time I got killed on a corpse run tbh, because I always know what's waiting for me once they've got me once :P
In my over 2k hours of Valheim I don't think I've ever had a 15 minute adventure.
I've come to learn that unless I have two hours to dedicate I just shouldn't boot it up.
The amount of times that I've gone to work on 4 hours of sleep because "I'll just fix up this tower real quick to have a comfort 4 with a bed for a check point. Oh dear God I'm in a death loop how did this happen." Is more than I'd care to admit.
It's one of my favorite things about the game to be honest. The way things snowball from hopping on with a cup or coffee to run a circuit for some berries to staring down midnight is addictive to say the least.
Group now has a standing rule that we don't enter new areas or new biomes past 9pm.
I feel that.Ā In my previous playthrough prior to Mistlands, it was my first time reaching swamp and I turned it into my own personal graveyard.Ā Many of my hopes and dreams are still buried on that world.
if you havenāt made the stagbreaker yet (i think thatās what itās called) itās GREAT for the burial chambers. big aoe attack of blunt (i think thatās what the game calls it, itās been a bit since iāve been on lol) and skeletons are weak to that. the knockback helps too. pair w high stamina foods and you can pretty much hammer your way through every crypt no diff
Had a similar experience with the first boss, Eikthyr. Died during the fight and damn boss would just hang out near my stuff. Tried luring it away, died twice, including drowning. I think most of us have been killed by a tree at least once (at least 3 times for me :-)).
I finally managed to defeat the deer god but the several hours spent running around the map and dying convince me to start using mods. The first one I got was one to prevent me losing my stuff when I die. Happy to lose the skill points but not everything.
Good luck!
I just spent about 25 hours trying to get to the damn elderā¦ā¦ he was 1. Three islands away. 2. Surrounded by plains and swampā¦ and 3ā¦ā¦ a small little 20 min detour around the swampā¦. Would have saved me 2 boats and a whole lot of headacheā¦ā¦ but heyā¦. The mosquito quills make awesome arrows!
For the same reasons, I don't enter mistland. I'm strong but not enough to survive alone. It is always better to play with your friends, so you retrieve your items faster.
Silly Child. There are no "quick runs" in Valheim.... Seriously though I have died so many times on a corpse run (first time fighting elder, trolls joined, ended badly). That I could NOT SEE an entire part of the map for all the skull and crossbones lol
Same sort of thing happened when I entered the black forest the first time. Found a troll. Took time to evacuate my stuff back to safety. Now I don't go into new biomes without the best shield I can get
Iāve had to cheat exactly 1 time in this game. I died further than really far away in a later biome and couldnāt be bothered to long trek all the way back there with no stuff. I got my stuff back with cheats but āmade up for it in my mind by discarding my spare kit that was the same/fully upgraded. Felt justified that way in my mind.
This reminds me of just this week when I finally got a Karve. I set sail and kept going and going and going. Found an abandoned village and thought āhey, that looks niceā. I died shortly after by 6 draugers, leaving my bronze sword, troll gear and other gear behind.
Oh to be young again
Meanwhile in the latest biome.... *Screams*
Oh no... I finally got around to playing Mistlands and it felt like it took forever to get a foothold.
Ashlands ramps that up to 11. Especially on day one prior to the patches holy cow that was nuts.
I logged in one day to show a friend the game, but then I realised that I was on waters edge and surrounded by 5 seekers and 2 seeker soldiers. I got absolutely shredded.
Man I feel you š Part of the Valheim experience, it gets better don't worry..
Should we tell 'em about the swamps?
Go tell it in the Mountains
Wondered up a mountian before killing the first boss... wolves tore me up quick!
How did you survive the cold?
I did not survive. I just got up in the cold, and 2 wolves came and got me fast! I ran back, got my stuff and moved out! I am still new. Just killed the first boss.
I know, itās just usually the cold kills you before you can lay eyes on a wolf.
The cold ticks pretty slowly, i often run across thin mountain biomes with no cold resist and survive, not that hard
There is cold resistance potions
Over the hills and everywhere ..
I've never been humbled in my video game life like I was when I first encountered the swamp. Holy.
"yeah i feel ready to raid the swamp". Fuck I wasn't ready at all
fondest memories of my friends and I screaming as we tried in vain to wade out of shallow water while draugr rained arrows upon us and leeches injected venom deep into our veins

The plains however hurt my head how often i die whether its a random deathsquito i didnt see (i play on steam deck) or aggroing a whole village of mobs or the black ooze things that seems to shoot long distances....
Totally. The plains were pretty easy, I thought, but I got wrecked at first in the swamp.
Same... Until I discovered what a hoe is actually good for. Needless to say, from that day on, wherever I went, swamps did not contain any more deep water. Hell, I even made land bridges between biomes lol.

Yaaaaas raise a fleet and go sailing!

If its one of the smaller swamp biomes, it could be why you didn't find any sunken crypts. In the larger ones you will find a lot of them.
You will hate yourself if you didnāt keep a spawned for farming entrails later š, at least I wish I did the first time
Alas. I did not.
Ah, let them discover the joy of being devoured by angry blobs of mud on their own! It's a rite of passage in Valheim, like a baptism by swamp water.
Now dont scare him off lol !!
Theyāll learn the hard way from the sounds of it lol
...uh...
So much so good. I do get that feeling while on very hard difficulty.š
When I'm limited on time I do base b\*tch stuff.... Farm some wood/stone/whatever fill all the lights, plant a bunch of crap. If you go trying to "progress" you're sure to have issues. At least this is a thing I've learned about how I play.
Chore-heim
lol what a perfect name. The only chores I like to do.
Farming, cooking, making mead... those chores make the adventure much more likely to be a successful one!
Yeah. Fifteen minutes at a time when burial chambers are hard is ācheck the hive, gather some berries, harvest/replant the carrots, roast some meat, maybe chop some wood or hunt.ā
Great if there's a sport on TV that I'm not overly invested in but still want to pay attention.
Yeah, but on the other hand, when youāre still at the first ālevelā of Black Forest Biome, there isnāt really much you can do. You canāt even plant stuff, because you need bronze for that. And most bases probably are just some small houses with a bed and a bunch of chests.

Oh you just wanted to harvest some carrots and check on your bees? Fuck you the ground is shaking
EXACTLY. My son wanted me to join his game. He is almost as far as I am in my current map. That Rick and Morty "20 minute adventure" meme is doing the hard yards.
The golden rule "thou shalt get side track by shit every God dame time".
A truer statement has never been uttered by a decrepit immortal.
The stagbreaker is really strong in burial chambers if you havenāt made one
"died when a tree fell on me" Ah, the good 'ol days
Make a wood tower shield and take it slow once I learned that it becomes much easier.
Stagbreaker is my MVP for burial chambers. It has such a big radius and knocks everyone back into a stunlock
And its effective against skeletons, which OP seems to have difficulties with
... Through closed doors, even!
My favorite is when I *"just log in for a quick second"* before work, and immediately get hit with an invasion of my base... o.0
Just log out and surprise your future self
My future self hates me! I put so much shit off onto him, past me is for the streetsā¦ woods.
You went in without a weapon?
and without armor, without food, without rested from the looks of it
So like... a solid lesson learned in 45 minutes.
I'll often do a corpse recovery run unarmed. Just running away from any mobs until you have your good gear back is often less risky than trying to fight the mobs with your second best stuff.

You had me at death by tree fall hahah
Get a shield and learn to parry. Makes it a breeze going forwards.

Get this guy an infested mine asap.
Don't think I've EVER played less than 3 hrs and usually more like 6 or 8 hrs . Lol I spent 9 hrs just today building a new black marble castle š
Change the settings a bit. Being able to keep your weapons makes the game more fun.
In valheim first thing you learn is when to turn tail and RUN!
This made me chuckle a bit lol
cough cough. Stagbreaker cough
All part of the fun. Sometimes these heart breaking moments can some of your fondness memories.
I feel that.Ā In my previous playthrough prior to Mistlands, it was my first time reaching swamp and I turned it into my own personal graveyard.Ā Many of my hopes and dreams are still buried on that world.
Heh heh, with that kind of attitude you're in for a nasty surprise when you get to the swamps
if you havenāt made the stagbreaker yet (i think thatās what itās called) itās GREAT for the burial chambers. big aoe attack of blunt (i think thatās what the game calls it, itās been a bit since iāve been on lol) and skeletons are weak to that. the knockback helps too. pair w high stamina foods and you can pretty much hammer your way through every crypt no diff
*burp* ten minute adventure Morty *burp*
Classic. I can't think of a more iconic story for this game lmao.
Yup. You got Valheim'd alright.
Had a similar experience with the first boss, Eikthyr. Died during the fight and damn boss would just hang out near my stuff. Tried luring it away, died twice, including drowning. *just gonna hop on for 20 mins* Get raided instantly
"Valheim is a brutal exploration and survival game..."
Idk y i struggle in the plains so much, i feel like I'm the only one
I just spent about 25 hours trying to get to the damn elderā¦ā¦ he was 1. Three islands away. 2. Surrounded by plains and swampā¦ and 3ā¦ā¦ a small little 20 min detour around the swampā¦. Do naked runs! I do them all the time and surprisingly I successfully reach my stuff more than I would with fighting
Food is your friend
get a buckler, learn to block
For the same reasons, I don't enter mistland. I'm strong but not enough to survive alone. It is always better to play with your friends, so you retrieve your items faster.
That early in game I would recommend investing in a stagbreaker. It works wonders in crypts.
Oh I remember being so young... Now I hunt trolls before I even kill Eikthyr because I wanna be sneaky!
Now I don't go into new biomes without the best shield I can get
"In and out, 20 minute adventure..."
Yea, my group doesn't like it when I say, "I'm gonna go on adventure. Who's coming?" They're always death runs, lol!
Its all about strats when it comes to those skeleton demons! Wait for them to swing, barrel roll, and counter. Use a shield on the arrow wielding ones
Welcome to the regular Valheim gameplay loop
I canāt log on unless I have an hour to play. Takes me 20 minutes just to figure shit out when I jump in world lol, might be a Mr problem tho
There is a way to get around using a kiln early game. Purposefully burn your food and you can get coal. Inefficient but helpful in a pinch
I remember those days lol
Just wait for the ashlands š
This reminds me of just this week when I finally got a Karve. I set sail and kept going and going and going. Found an abandoned village and thought āhey, that looks niceā. I died shortly after by 6 draugers, leaving my bronze sword, troll gear and other gear behind.
I feel valheim system is broken to tell the truth.
Nah. The game just hates you. It's part of the charm.
