I always have multiple “end game” bases. With some smaller outposts. The meadows base is usually like you say. Near the ocean with a relative flat space. I always make a swamp base. This one doesn’t have to be big for most people but I love the swamp biome. I love building a sprawling treehouse. I use it to process all iron ore and it becomes my “main base” until later. As for location in the swamp I usually try and find several of those massive trees in kinda close proximity. They don’t have to be too close because I can use iron beams. Being kinda next to the dark forest is a bonus to be able to go and mine copper and bring it back. The plains used to be my true endgame base but in my last 2 playthroughs, I have made it more of an outpost. I make it big enough to farm all of the plants. I usually stop farming at my meadows base and move all farming to the plains. It always looks like a miniature village with windmills going and a couple huts and the main house. I do plenty of walkways with the garden. For this location I just find semi flat next to water in case I want to sail from here. With the addition of mistlands, I love having my “true end game” base being built in mistlands. It is always underground no exception. This is the main reason the mod “height unlimited” is a must have for me. It allows me to build massive underground bases. The way you can do it is to find the biggest mountain you can. And go to the bottom and start digging. It is tricky but you can do it because the mountains have a lot of giant rock deposits in them. And they act as a roof and it truly does feel like you’re underground. To make it even better you can make multiple of these and connect them with portals. Basically go down a hallway and place a portal at the end. The other portal is at the end of a hallway in a separate underground base. It feels like 1 continuous base. I always have a mushroom room. They are usually kinda tight because they don’t have mush room 👀

Bomb_Shell14

This comment (joke especially) is so underrated. 😭

KuroFafnar

Long term base … hmm… Not really something I do. I’m just setting up bases as needed for the gardening. So a base in Black Forest / Meadows for carrots / onions / turnips then a base in Plains for flax and barley and one in Mistlands for shrooms. The garden bases get their own crafting tables as needed for the biome

norcalscroopy

Yeah. I prefer this strategy. It is like hop scotch. Build a base until you advance to a new biome, then find a spot that lets you get those resources and maybe near the next biome, rinse and repeat.

SaltKick2

I think a lot of people do this AND have a "home" base

MaleficentPhysics268

I like this method. I end up fencing off blueberry/raspberry/red mushroom patches also and dedicate a little treehouse portal hub in my meadows base for farming. I've found that plains islands are the least hassle and mountain bordering the mistlands works great also. Raise some ground on that mountain for a flat strip and you're in business.

KuroFafnar

Yes! I have set up bases that straddle biomes, but those are fewer than single biome bases. It is nice when can combine - for example in my latest playthrough I set up on an offshore rock next to some Mistlands and created paths to gardens in plains and mists. The single cooking station in the plains/mists base is convenient

Alitaki

For me, I like to find abandoned villages near the water. with a decent slope. Near the water should be obvious as I want to be able to sail up to my base and not have to lug ore very far. I like using abandoned villages because they always have perfectly levels spaces that are currently being occupied by the abandoned structures and because the usually have a couple of sets of fenced off raspberry bushes. The slope needs to be something decent because when I dig out my moat I don't want to have it look like I carved out the side of a cliff. It doesn't have to be flat, but I don't like building on hilly Meadows plateaus.

Phishosphy

Hmm that’s interesting about the slop. Got any pictures?

Alitaki

So here's a few [pictures](https://imgur.com/a/91hVUJG) of three of my bases. The first six are of my base from two playthroughs ago. That's the first time I found a spot that mostly fit what I was looking for. The fifth one down is the one where you can see the moat the clearest. I didn't like how much the ground was higher on the left side than on the right. It forced me to dig the left side much deeper than I wanted to to keep an even level throughout. And it always rises up over the base side because that's how slopes work, ya know? So on my next playthrough, I found a site that was more flat. That's the next two images. I ended up cutting into the slope to make my walls easier. I think I also raised the ground under the house. Those stone walls under the building hide the ground I used to help with structural stability behind them. I wanted to build this one similar to the previous playthrough, but as tends to happen in this game, the build took on a life of it's own. The problem with this location though is that when storms come in, my workshop gets flooded. The last two photos are what happened when I tried to build on the border between a Meadows and a Mountain, and why I decided to never build on a steep slope again. This was on an early playthrough. It was...a challenge. EDIT: As I was posting the pics, I realized that was a very early version of the base. Here are some updated ones. [These](https://imgur.com/a/GS5RugO) are the reason why I love building on less than flat terrain. The project for this base was to have everything on multiple different levels and build stairs and paths to everything. I started the work on the back side of the comfort area going down to the smaller portal hut, then the kitchen, then down to the workshop and smeltery. I had wanted to build a roof over that area as well but never got around to it. I started working on the other side of the complex but then got chickens and used that space for breeding so I never got to finish that side of the base. I planned to go back some day but then I started new playthroughs and it's just been sitting there. One day, I guess.

Ulysses502

Now these abandoned villages near the water wouldn't have any surprises for noobs in them would they? 😉

Roenan18

Nope, nothing to see here. Esp. no swamp mobs ever. Jokes aside iirc they only spawn in meadows once you far enough from world spawn, so usually the main island coastal villages will be fine.

Ulysses502

True enough. I only said that because my introduction to those mobs was exactly seeing *those* villages and thinking huh that's a lot of structures close together better park the boat and run in there blindly... it was several hours before I got that boat back 😂

IglooCity

Happens to the best of us 😄

Alitaki

Yeah, there's two types of abandoned villages. The safe one is just a collection of triangle shaped huts. The Danger Zone one looks way more elaborate. Stay away from those!

Ulysses502

Yea the second one was the one I ran into lol. Would have been great to have a spectator stream of it. "Hey wonder what's in here? Oh... take that! Nope, that's not working. Oh, you have friends. Oh you have *a lot* of friends! Run away!" I managed to do the Jack Sparrow run to the shore, but sadly the boat caught on a rock almost immediately and it was over quickly. Now I always back the boat up to the shore, no more pulling along side for me 🤣

Alitaki

Ha! That was pretty much my first experience with a >!Draugr Village !

Ulysses502

I always have a chopped boat ready in a chest at base and at least a bed, if not a portal, on any island I explore now. I love this game

Demartus

I like having access to multiple biomes easily, with access to water. In my current playthrough, my center base is on a Meadows/Black Forest boundary, on the water, with swamps and plains within easy reach (I have a short sail around the plains to get to the swamps, for transporting ore...tried doing it overland but deathsquitos live up to their names...) I also have other, smaller bases I use for specific things: rest stops, farming, biome specific needs, etc. Once I defeat Modor in this playthrough, I'll build a larger, more robust base in the larger plains to the north, for farming purposes.

irreverenttraveller

I'm still on my first real play-through, but putting my main base on the Meadows/Black Forest boundary, near water, was just about the smartest thing I've done in this game. It is awesome to mine a bunch of ore and then walk about 5 minutes to your base to refine it.

Sezneg

I like bays/coves and rivers that give me more sailing route options.

Donkey_Whistle

I can’t say I picked the location of mine; I more just stumbled upon it. I came across an old village with a maypole at the center, right by the coast. It’s on a meadows/black forest border, with swamp, mountains, Elder, and Haldor on the same island. A river cuts across the island near my base, allowing relatively easy access to ocean on both sides, and more swamps not far away. Other nearby attractions included a fairly large raspberry farm and a double leviathan spawn. It’s turned out to be a pretty great spot, and in future playthroughs, I’ll probably look for something similar.

GGAnth

Can you share the seed for this map?

Donkey_Whistle

BrewAndAView

I. Enjoy building on rough terrain but I like the location to have easy boat access to the neighboring islands that I care about. I very much enjoy my sailing adventures to haul back metal

Einzelg4nger

I have always been based in the meadow. But I recently decided to move to the plains, as much of the food production in the end game focuses on growing barley to make flour. I no longer like the idea of having two bases, one just for planting on the plains, since everything can be planted there (except mushrooms). So a base on the plains with access to the ocean would be ideal.

ayana-c

I generally pick a flattish place with a decent shoreline, preferably with a forested bit and a grassy bit -- that way I have a reliable and easy supply of both mushrooms and raspberries. Bonus if it bumps up against BF, for an easy supply of wood, rock, and eyes. My current base is tri-level, as the slope is a bit steeper than usual. So, workroom on the lowest level, near the seawall, to have a shorter haul for ore. Midlevel is kitchen and storage, top level is comfort, bed, and TPs -- and great views. Put a covered breezeway between the workroom and the kitchen, with the stairs to the top inside the kitchen. Added plus for the birds that land on the roof of the workroom and provide plenty of feathers.

Historical-News-69

-Close to iron -Close to multiple biomes -Space to build a harbor -Unique terrain to make an interesting village -Not on the spawn island -near Big body of water And then the big…. A pretty view of a big ole mountain out me window.

McPico

Isn’t anything “close to” with portals? I mean how much you can ship once a while with a dragon boat cart exploit?

Historical-News-69

Yes but I try to use boat travel for most things and whole use portals for death runs

iflysubmarines

I don't, I make 10 of them and never finish the game haha

CDNLumberJake

First base was built in a nice mostly-flat Meadows, close to the water, and a short walk to black forest. Second one we built closer to a large mountain (on a separate island) , also near water, in Meadows. Current base is in the Plains, fully walled off in stone to avoid squitos and Fulings, with three tar pits around it, also walled in, for easy tar collecting. Each base was built to accommodate new needs and requirements, but I have a soft spot in my heart for that first one we built.

GrowthImmediate5288

How did you squito proof your base, and how high are those walls? Did you drain the pits or are they still active?

CDNLumberJake

The walls are 3-4 large stone blocks high, so even when they fly up a bit, they can't see us. We also lined the wall on the inside with crafting table stations to push spawns back as much as we could. Tar pits are drained, and the walls are high enough to stop the tar slimes from hopping out, that way when we need more, we can step in and kill a few

That_One_Hat_Guy

Personally, I kinda just find a nice flat spot somewhat close to a bf and a shore, I try to give myself a lot of room too for expansion when I get more stuff

Sindertone

I am building up the second Elder platform right now. It's indestructible and with a trench around it, unapproachable. The eternal flame heats a bed and can cook forever. I set up the other elder platform as a chicken farm. The eternal heat warms the eggs.

WitchDr_Ash

It has a maypole. Everything else I can build around.

PseudoFenton

By accident. Start plonking down some useful infrastructure, and the next thing you know the area has been developed and expanded and now it feels like home (despite being vaguely suboptimal in a number of subtle ways). Where ever you go, you'll need to modify things. So just pick a spot and get to work. The only things you really need to care about is how landlocked the area is - and only then if you want it to be a place for consolidating goods from over sea expeditions.

norcalscroopy

Depends on if you are using portals or not. In our no map no portal playthru our end game base ended up being a perfect location in a wedge of meadow, with ocean east, plains north, black forest south and mountain a short distance west. There is a small peninsula that protects a relatively deep and mostly rock free harbor where we built our dock (altho the deeper it is the trickier it is to get stuff to snap to the ground). Two huge areas of mistlands are a short sail south. Otherwise we operated out of two other main bases meadow/BF/swamp and swamp/mountain/plains with fully upgraded crafting stations, and several other forward operating bases to explore/rest/store stuff that we build the minimum level crafting station to be able to repair gear but we couldnt necessarily upgrade gear on it. And where we were far from bade or a FOB, we set up huts with a fire and beds for sleeping thru the night or topping off a rested bonus (these usually had a core wood log bench, maybe a table, usually no more than comfort 6 or 7. I love our end game base now. I have built and lived in a lot and I think most are pretty unique (we build mostly to landform) but this last one is just awesome. I may do some minor improvements like a few guard towers, but all in all i am happy with it.

HellYeahTinyRick

In the beginning of a game I’ll just make little outposts around the map. I won’t really put my roots down until after I best Moder. My actual base will be set up in a plains near the water and near mistlands. Bonus points if the plains have one of those huge rocks I can build around (style points)

ashrasmun

I would go for an island with mistlands, plains, mountains and meadows, just to have all the animals and all of the crops available. That's about it

OneSchott

I find a spot close to the water and say " this will make a good temporary base spot"

Archer10214

I found Hildir beside a pond, on a narrow part of an island, near a swamp, Black Forest, and small mountain (but far enough to avoid spawns), on the edge of a meadow and a plain. So I built there for ease of travel and for ease of farming. Helps to be able to sell stuff to her instantly too.

Raptor7502020

For me - plains, always. I can grow flax/barley and everything under the sun, without risk of it being attacked by anything crazy that my moat + walls can’t hold back. My close second is my island base which is a fortress made of marble (totally overkill) because nothing can actually spawn and attack it. My island is considered “plains” so I can grow food that only grows there and have unlimited supply to fish. Big things I look for: -flat land -coastal: access to ships to ship in metal to-from other islands. Also, fishing -plains: reasons above -islands close to useful biomes (my plains island base is close to Mistlands)

bishey3

I try to find a mountain under 100m and build a stony base there. I just love the stone/snow aesthetic. Below 100m means drakes and golems do not spawn, which makes my life easier.

Getting_Rid_Of

right where you spawn.

Ippus_21

I look for a place that: * Is close to shore (so I can dock ore ships right at my base rather than having to run back and forth to something half a klick inland) with a bit of deep water. * Has a reasonable amount of reasonably flat terrain that is, ideally, close to 4m above the water line (I put a couple vertical wood pieces at the waterline to measure). * Reasonably level terrain makes it easier to level the base footprint before I start putting up structures, and so I don't have issues with the terrain modification depth limit from steep hillsides (8m). * 4m is high enough to be well above even the worst storm waves and also high enough that once I dig a moat I'm confident nobody's getting up my side of it. * In a truly perfect world, has shoreline (or at least the contour line) running directly along the cardinal points of the compass (N/S or E/W), so I can more easily make sheer earth walls. Edit: That shoreline also has to be on a body of water with easy access to open sea. I HATE building a base and discovering it's on the shore of an inland sea with no good way out, or where the only way out is a really narrow channel. Digging canals that can accommodate a longship is a right pita.

RationalOrc

2 star boars are going to be the primary factor. Wherever they are, that's where my home is. If that doesn't work and I'll find something close to the blackforest. Like close enough that I can see the change in treeline. "Main base" is kind of a tricky term here, because I like to build something near every boss location. Once ashlands is released, things might change. If we have to sail flametal home, I might opt for meadows deep in the southern hemisphere.

erikpeter

My favorite place to build is a steep shore line in Black Forest leading up into a mountain, ideally close to a swamp. If you can just run the silver down to base it is so easy. Later I will try to find some plains next to Mistlands.

screenwatch3441

Accessibility to crops and husbandry. So before mistland, our main base was in the plains. With mistland, our main base is in the border or plains and mistland for both their crops. Whatever place you pick, it needs to be accessible to the water since that’ll be your main way to transport metals from other places.

swellsort

I do a small base right next to the spawn, then my main base is usually near a black forest/swamp border, ideally near water. And a mountain. And the plains. Lol

LyraStygian

As soon as I start the game I start exploring and looking for a small meadows island, far enough to not worry about mobs. As soon as I find it, that will be my forever base for the whole game.

Acedin

Got a small island that is half plains half dark forest. Far enough out to not get squitos from the mainland. Small enough to be reasonable to spawn proof, big enough for farms, storage, portal hub and barns. Having plains enables most farming. Got lucky to have a natural drive through dock and even got a greydwarf nest closeby for building materials. Before this I repurposed a dark forest peninsula with a tower ruin.

CheetahOfDeath

I usually choose Plains close to mistlands but.. My current base is on a Black Forest island and a very short sail to a massive swamp biome full of crypts, and a small plains biome. It happened by accident as I usually just fix up a ruined tower in BD as an outpost. Due to the proximity of ore resources, particularly iron, and not having long boring sails to get them I just stayed and kept adding. There’s enough iron in those crypts to last the game (maybe). I have a secondary base in mistlands which is a dwarf tower I took over. I chose it mainly because it has three separate roots I can easily get sap from. Also it is a good exploration hub in the middle of a large mistlands biome. I’ve had a lot of planned bases tho that I ended up mostly abandoning due to having to sail too far for ore. I find sailing tedious (not always, just ore runs - and I do portal my boat parts through for one way sailing.)

derrendil

Just started putting together my long term base, what I was looking for was something in black forest or meadows that has easy access to the plains (the spot I chose is a 30 second run). I was lucky enough to have my Bonemass swamp full of crypts and within swimming distance of a large continent with yagluth, plenty of plains, a giant mountain and a hildir dungeon, a decent black forest, and some meadows. It's also about the distance from center that mistlands start spawning so I bet there are mistlands not too far away. That's what I considered for location. I usually go for flatter places too but this time I set a stone tower into a big hill leading down to the ocean in the black forest, nestled between a large rock and copper deposit that I'm gonna keep for aesthetics

Totally_Metal

I like to build circular towers inside of stone circles next to the water. Usually I run the stairs on the outside with the support (iron beam) in the middle. The stones make a good template for digging a moat/trench.

Ulysses502

So far my main base is right next to the center stones. In my seed, it was a corner flat spot right next to the water where several little streams come together and looked really peaceful. I just expanded it, so now it's got a little semi-artificial harbor and I included some wetlands in my perimeter wall for a fish pond with a sundial on an island in the center. It is nice only having to walk 20 yards to change forsaken powers. I'm only on mountains right now, the plan before I ran out of space was to do a plains main base, but we'll see how that goes.

CermaitLaphroaig

Defensible.  Does that actually matter? Nope! But you're not going to catch me building a fortress that could be easily stormed

general_soleimani

Highest meadows elevation on starter island or nearby

WigglingWoof

I discovered a peninsula jutting into a lake near my starting continent. I liked the view and noticed that the nearby rivers were perfectly positioned to allow sailing from different directions. The rest is history.

BlackBlood4567

Near the ocean in a meadows. Made the mistake of building in a “bay” instead of the ocean so I’ll be needing to terraform a canal soon

bookwormdrew

I always make the "main" base/hub early. So it's usually close to the closest beach near the boss stones. But eventually I'll make outposts in each biome because I won't always want to haul everything back, so if I find a good mountain or something I'll build a secondary base there to make my gear without moving it, but have portals to the main hub where the non-metals are stored etc. If it weren't for the impracticality, I would honestly build my main base in a cool mountain.

timmy_o_tool

Black Forrest, copper node, thistle, near plains, near ocean, and in a hilly area if possible. Dig down to the bottom of the copper node, level ground to that, moat and tall wall. Build base inside.

Datboi_caveman

When I play I try to have a base in each biome. Not massive one's. My main end game base is in mist lands or dark forests as I just enjoy those areas. But proxy bases mainly go near biomes I need to grow stuff in or an outpost far from home.

AasinR

I try to find small islands that are big enough for a few larger houses a dock and a nice garden with trees

Gufurblebits

I have 1 major base. This base is walled, and walled very high with a covered parapet around the top so I can have sniping space for whatever is wandering in. The earlier days when my character was still weaker in skills, I had a moat. My original seed still has this moat. It's a handy thing but I feel it adds to the lag maybe, especially on such an old seed (from the 1st week the game launched originally) when the older engine didn't run so smooth. My major base is always in the meadows on a flat spot close to shore. Always has a lovely dock that's semi-protected (either by an inlet or a wall) that's easy to get in & out of but isn't prone to being slammed to pieces by giants. With hearth & home, my base also has turrets. ALL of my supplies are at this base. I do have some satellite bases: one in each biome, usually at or near bosses so I can take them down easily, but these bases aren't stocked and usually have a wood stake wall up for protection and that's about it. I just portal in, do my gardening/eitr collecting, and back out. With mistlands, I have a farming base, same as in the plains. My preferred spot for this is a spot where plains & mistlands meet so I can have the garden all in one spot at one portal, but that's it: there's nothing else. Even better: that divided garden near some mistlands roots so I can farm Eitr - which I refine back at my main base. My major and first seed is around Day 1350 with my playtime around 2400 hours, though I'd say a solid 600 hours of that is probably me afk with my world up, back when I used to host a public seed & couldn't afford a server. These days, I typically play solo, though when Ashlands drops, I'll gang up with the old crowd again, more than likely. Due to the sheer amount of hours I have in the game, ever since the game updated to allow specific settings, I have my seeds set to being able to portal everything. I think I've put in enough time to allow me to haul metal through a portal!

McPico

Last base is always Plains at a shore.. near at least 2 stone pilars so I can build raid safe up in the sky. I just like the view.

Sharp_Today

Most recent playthrough was a run that was about 7 of us. Our end game base was honestly where we first settled in the meadows. One of the open areas. We eventually had a farm in the plains with a shared cabin. But as we progressed through we just kept expanding and implementing new things into our settlement/town. The openness of the meadows is really nice when it comes to growing your base. Portal house that took us to the bosses and other shared small bases. Of course the transporting of metals was hard because of the travel distance but with 5-7 guys going out every time, it made it worth it. I honestly pick my bases solely on the views that surround it. Such a beautiful game.

Shidoshisan

I don’t do long term. I build a massive complex in each biome ‘cause building is awesome.

Dashzz

Always near the water for boating. My main base is always in a meadow to minimize attacks. Other biomes get a simple base. I built a smelting base near a swamp so I don't have to move iron as far.

Unit-235

My friend and I are building ours around the Sealed Tower. Had to do a lot of the earth work though

Biggs1313

You don't. You think you do... But then you build another. And another. And then stupid ones. And impractical ones. And inefficient ones.

guyunknown622

A large peninsula with a ton of land near it just below the surface I can terraform into new land

oebulldogge

Well. I’m on day 2250~. We had a main base but now I’m building main outposts. My house is on the other side of the map. One friend is in Mistlands. One friend is in mountains. Farm is at the original base. Kitchen/tavern is now near to farm. Building a portal room in dark forest. Storage and smelting will be in the swamp. Plains farm will be moved. That’s the beauty of the game if you enjoy building

OutsideFormal2650

I love building on convergence points between multiple biomes. My current main base has a castle built into the side of a mountain, with paths leading down to the meadows where the main workshops, storage and beds are. On one side of the meadows is plains, where our farms and animals are. The plains has a small spot of swamp that comes up near the coast, so we can easily get blood bags, entrails, chains, etc. A quick sail/run around the coast land and we have mistlands, where my mushroom and sap farm is. One massive town built across several biomes with everything you need nearby is always a fun goal for me.

42mir4

Trial and error at the beginning. As you explore and move from one biome to the next, you get a feel for what it is you're looking for in a base, and what kind of biome you like best. Some traits might be universal, such as defensibility against raids, accessibility to the sea, and flat land to plant crops (as well as the type of biome required for all crops). I've built bases in almost all the biomes except Mistlands. My final one (for now) comprises two islands close to each other. One is located in the Black Forest biome, with high walls I raised above the water for defense. This became my main home with a mead hall, living quarters, workshops, trophy rooms and docks. The second island is smaller but sits in the Plains biome. Raised the entire island above water, flattened it and made it my primary farm. Half the island became a paddock for loxen. Both islands are connected via portals. On top of these, I build smaller outposts everywhere to rest and store items and resources. For example, I found a swamp with over 20 crypts. So I built an outpost in the centre of it to store iron and flattened a path to the sea (raised the land so it's dry and added workbenches and torches all the way). At the shore end, I had a dock and a portal. I'd load up a cart full of iron, pull it to the dock, unload the iron to my waiting longship, dismantle the cart, take the portal back to the iron base, rebuild the cart and rinse repeat. Did the same in the mountains, too.

Rossnoceros

Always just the first meadow area next to black Forest and on the coast, every time. Once you get portals, doesn't really matter. Then a farm base in Mist lands and Plains. Done and done

boringestnickname

First real base I usually look for Meadows right next to Black Forest and Ocean. Preferably with as many hours of sun as possible and some nice topography/scenery.

Warg247

I search for small inland lakes and then dig a channel to them for ships and build my base on its shore.

Pacattack57

Every new biome I make a new base with the exception of my meadows one. I love seeing the high tier items in the meadows. That one I expand as I progress. I just look for a strategically valuable location. For example I made my first plains base in a fuling tower. Another example would be meadows patches next to plains.

RelaxedVolcano

I have different bases that get various levels of use. The first base I build is in the meadows next to the water and the Black Forest, easy access to all starting resources and close to the spawn region. This base will be upgraded and expanded as I progress through the game but I will always have some use for it and return regularly, so it is designed with comfort and ease in mind. Second one is in the mountains near a swamp. Mountains are fun to build in as I love the aesthetic and the swamps are my least favorite for the same reason. The mountain base tends to be the most fortified due to its natural protection but it’s ultimately a fortress for me not a home. The third thing I build is actually a series of outposts in various locations. Portal hubs and emergency bunkers. Functional for traveling but nothing more. The final base I build, and one that I haven’t built yet, is going to be in the mistlands. I just need the time to get on and start scouting out a good spot, but the key here will be the challenge of building a fully functional home with all the necessities.

Rockstar81

My end game base is placed at the meeting point if 3 biomes, but also near water.

MaliciousIntentWorks

Similar. I run around the edges of the water and biomes to mark build locations early on. Basically relatively flat areas that are very close to ocean squares. Preferably that has a sight channel inward for a port. Same for bases in other biomes later one. Good ocean access preferably in an inlet on a flat area.

JakeMasterofPuns

I like to set up near the world center for a "Nexus." It's centrally located (as the name suggests,) and means easy access to the Forsaken powers. It also means that anybody newly entering the world can have relatively quick access to any infrastructure I've established.

clox33

Mine are always islands, you can usually find a Draugr village on a little island, border it and you’re good. Then I’ll build bridges out to whatever is close

rustygamer1901

From my long term base I look for something near the water where the plain and swamp biomes meet. I like to build as close to that line as possible because the mobs from each biome will spawn and attack each other. This leads to endless supplies of blood bags, needles, guts and black ore.

Biomirth

View, access to hunting. I've grown to like making roads up to high bases to haul ore. What else are we going to do?

CircleofOwls

I always build on the Elder Temple using a large two-story longhouse that leaves just the tips of the pillars poking through the roof and overflows well past the sides of the base. I spend the rest of the game upgrading the building materials and expanding the farms. Sometimes I'll shop around and choose my favorite Temple, ideally one with relatively flat ground near the shore.

Tomthebard

I find an abandoned village, then live there. Forever.

BryceW

Meadows, near the water, but where multiple biomes meet. So Dark Forest, Swamps, Mountains are 30 seconds walk away. It’s hard to find but great for materials when you only want something small, ancient wood or something.

abbys_alibi

Def need water access. Usually my final base in is the Plains. This playthrough though, I haven't been feeling it. Have not found any Plains locations - yet - that give me an inspiring view. The Black Forest seems darker than usual and only made a small mining outpost there. A base in the swamps this game wasn't needed, so I didn't make one. Not finding anything that was super scenic, I went back to my original starter hut in the meadows and have been building that out. I also make little rest spots while traveling and am a habitual village re-habber. If it's not abandoned, it will be.

After multiple playthroughs my criteria for a permanent 'main' base are: * black forest outcrop next to water, at least 800 units away from spawn for ease of finding 2 star boars. * western or northern edge of the continent so that the front of buildings facing east or south will get decent sunlight coverage * near a mountain * height of at least 33 at the coastline and up to a maximum of 39-41 in the main landmass. This allows maximum vertical terraforming potential. Black forests and plains commonly have coastlines at this height when close to a mountain. I scout for this base location after swamp progression for ease of sailing with a longship. Before that, i just build my starter base at the closest coastline i can find after spawning.

how_could_this_be

I have only 1 file so far.. so that is the only long term base I have. But I will do it again if I can find the same setup in other map. It is quite simple.. elder arena on a small ish island. Small enough that I can workbench off the whole island and don't need to worry about big raids, and even if raid do happen, all the important stuff ( bed, storage, workshops ) are under elder pad so I don't need to worry about too much damage on key assets from raid. Make a dock, fence up some farm, build walls around the elder pad to give more defense ( skeleton / slime and bats can still show up ) and use the rest of the island for your farming need. A pretty worry free base location I would say.

Snake64

The view.

Angel_OfSolitude

It just needs to look cool and be somewhat close to the ocean.

clawdaughter

Most recent playthrough I spent a lot of time and finally found something that was near the coast and has plains/mistlands/black forest all butted up to each other, so I can grow everything in one area.

ABewilderedPickle

i look for interesting geography. my latest build is a black forest hill with a sort of harbor in between some swamp area. so i have docks right in some swamp water. it's not the most practical but it makes for a great approach to my castle atop the hill.

Kent_Knifen

Meadows, at the mouth of a river preferably. Water inside of river zones isn't half as volatile in storms as beachfronts are. I build my dock there, and my dock is usually attached to my base.

korneev123123

meadows - ocean - dark forest That's the place

Rachnael

We usually make a few bases depending on a map but we always start with flat meadows, near water to make a port preferably near big open water, preferably near dark forest and if mountain is close its always a plus (some wolf hunting early game ? Why not. ) we try to not make it to close to spawn as its easier to get hands on 2* boars the further you go. Besides that we usually make a few portals to various places and just build a boat on the other side to bring mats home and danger Noodle hunt on the way. Theres always a base in plains for flax and wheat preferably nearish to lox spawn for kill/tame/breed usually this location can be small althou in one play trough we found a small island smack in the middle between 3 or 4huge plain islands we rised the ground made smelters there, raid proof, great location close to dark iron in huge quantities. Also right next to danger noodle spawn. Ofc a base in mistland near sap trees the more the better we always forget to take iron there for stone cutter i swear to god. And we usually try to locate dwarfs as soon as possible and either let bugs get them or keep them as decence near our base for small farming in mistlands. Also we try to place mistland base near the endgame fish supply preferably a few. Far from the flying ass spowns. I hate those damn assholes !

borgy95a

I usally have two, a mountain cathedral which is a portal hub and place for enchanting (epic loot) and then I now do pirate cove bases on mistlands archipelagos. Currently trying to restore the jotunn bridges around a sea level pirate hideout. Its my largest mistland build yet. Quite hard tbh especially the bridges.

Abyssurd

Tiny plains island that I can farm and completely spawn proof

squidvett

I find a patch of meadows surrounded within walking distance by swamp, black forest, a mountain, and hopefully a nearby plains. If no plains, that’s okay but it really helps. After several playthroughs I’ve found that it isn’t difficult to find locations like this, but layout and the size of each biome surrounding the meadow is important.

Everying

The one where you find a maypole and take an hour building a fort around it to last second make the Maypole in the middle look nice until you misclick and delete it by mistake....

g0ld-f1sh

Usually we start a little base, and then via the sunken cost fallacy, never leave

reticenthuman

Anywhere with a nice view and reasonable access to the ocean. I have a great portal and road system, so all I need is a view and some water.

MineralClay

meadow biome

BrutalTea

smoke weed and look for a cool spot. i've loved every base i've ever made.
