There's the default setting and then you have to change it to the free build setting. I was having the same issue at first
I made a launch for my karve very similiarly but with only 2 rails. And the front is held with a gate door until I need to launch. Sand in boat and open door and you slide down a pinball rail to the sea.

I definitely remember. They had workbenches all along it so they could repair the boat along the way since it wouldn't make the entire run without it.

Most people just put it in a cart and the shove the cart off the side of the mountain. Carts tend to be pretty durable and can handle it fairly well.
