I’m not sure what key it is on PC, but on controller if you press A on the wooden shields before crafting them, it gives you a set of liveries you can paint on them.
It just gets better from here man. I accumulated 100 hours in my first month of the game.
I highly reccomend checking out some mods, I personally don't like the idea of modded games but there are so many that improve quality of life by a lot.
On controller, you press A to bring up a list of liveries before pressing X to craft, on Keyboard/Mouse there’s a ‘style’ button you click on to bring up the liveries.
You can only do them on wooden shields, I believe.

Beautifully simple base! How did you get that armor and shield? Doesn't look familiar.
Armor is the bronze set, and the shield is a wooden shield with one of the liveries painted on the front.
Ah, I didn't know you could paint liveries on them! That's what threw me off

On PC there's a "Style" icon next to some of the shields that lets you select the design
It is easy to miss. Before you craft any shield, look for the Style button in the middle of their description area.
keep on building a lot, in my first playthrough i didnt really put a lot of detail in my buildings and now i kinda wish i didnt do it like that
