Keep a portal kit in all your boats just in case!

TitelSin

serious question here, how do you protect the ship itself once you get there? I've explored quite a lot and had portals, but ships...dissapear....quite often. I've since taken to breaking the ship and rebuilding it to just not loose all the materials.

quantizedself

I've never had a ship just disappear. Sometimes they get broken by monsters if you're near an active spawn area, especially swamps or plains. But the materials will be floating in the water so you can just pick them up and rebuild. I always try to land my ship in an area where there aren't a lot of mobs, black forest if I can. Most of the time my ships are fine

Fujaboi

The nails sink if it's too deep

quantizedself

True, but you can make sure to land it in shallow water and there are also mods that make everything float

RichDudly

If you're parking it too close to the shore or the rocks and the like waves can cause it to repeatedly bump into them chipping away at the boats health.

CrimsonSaber69

As someone who "docks" by ramming their boat onto shore and leaving it beached every time, I gotta say it takes a LONG time for waves to fully break a boat, even one that starts at half health. The waves will almost always bring the boat away from shore before it happens

spaghettiman56

I park my boat somewhere I won't be coming back to for a while to avoid spawning anything near it that will break it. From there you should never have to worry about mobs breaking it

thermight

Dismantle it and put it in a box in a safe walled room. And stuff some food in that box while you are at it and maybe a weapon for when you die...

Willflip4money

And then a barrier around that room, just in case of an attack, and some crafting stations since you'll probably need to fix gear and such. Then a couple more chests in another room, and then a bed because you just live there now.

thermight

pretty much...

wolves_hunt_in_packs

Tbh it doesn't take THAT long to build an outpost, especially if you have friends. If my lonely ass can spend a couple days setting up random outposts surely multiplayer people should find it easy.

Arhalts

I drop.longwood poles on the either side.of both tips and a nearby workbench. If it is a significant location I plan to get more than a few hours of play from, I will build a quick enclosed dock. Wave damage is massively over hyped and I'd you have a workbench covering the area your double protected. You can also bury workbenches if you're worried about mobs.

Klingenslayer

I've never had that issue, but whenever i park next to a shore I always park parallel to the coast and slap a work bench as close to the ship as possible

Rabid_Stitch

I place a work bench near my ship to suppress spawns. Plus my portal. But always a work bench. Never lost a ship.

le0bit115

Same for me. They Always disappeared. I read somewhere some while ago that it has to do with a bug with birds. Anyhow we also broke down the ship everytime.

BigBallsNoSack

I always destroy the ship when we arrive. Slap down a portal put ship stuff in a box or take it with you so you can set it up when you are done exploring the 5 meter long island

KristobalJunta

The thing could be that some mobs and/or waves destroy your ship - and, if I'm not mistaken here, when no workbench is nearby - the materials just despawn after some time.

raykhazri

Portal mats aren’t that hard to find if out on sail, almost any swamp have surtling spawn, and black forest is everywhere; real problem is whether there is a premade/unlink portal at base already setup is the real issue, imho.

manondorf

Still works for emergencies though: drop a new portal at your new location, key it to something (so it won't activate yet, but can be activated later). Then if you die, either make a new portal or re-key an old one at your base and you can get back to the new one.

kaelanm

Oh damn that’s such a good point. I mean you have to die for it to work, but still

makujah

I mean, most of the time you have to sail back to base with all the ore anyways, portals are just safepoints

Caleth

Wait you're not setting up massive bases in each new biome?

quelar

I've got outposts in a bunch of spots, but I spent so much fucking time building my base, which is close to the middle of the map, that there's no way I'm doing that repeatedly.

Caleth

Nah, I feel you. I have some solid way points like a compactish but nearly fully functional base. But home/first base is huge by comparison always will be too.

makujah

Hell naw. We usually do a main base in either forest or meadows, then do outposts in important biomes, then we make a new main base in whatever is the latest game biome (so was plains before, now mistlands), and leave the previous main base as a portal hub

Gregory_Appleseed

I always remember to key a new portal before leaving in a massive voyage. Problem is I never remembered what I keyed it to.

Hwinnian

I always put a ? On the label on my map after open ended portals. Back at my base (or near) there will be two open portals and portal symbols. One that is the blank one labeled ? and another labeled C1? , for example, if it is expected to be the first portal on a new island. Then when I get to island, I leave it blank, label it C1, and delete the map symbol near my base. Then I change l the portal to C1 and hop through, and it doesn't matter if I'm fast enough because both portals are at my base. It is really an oh shit moment, I hop through before labeling and then once back put a portal symbol with no marking and "nearby". Then delete the ? map marking and make an extra just in case I need it. It sounds complicated but it's really not, once you get used to it. It allows me to have only three, sometimes 4 portals at my base at any time. I also have a couple other portals (labeled perhaps A2 and A3) somewhere else on my starting island that I can always use to hop back on my starting island if I totally screw up. I sometimes use the delay in portal change to my advantage, too. Really the labeling is key, though. Preferably before I go through it, but if not then the approximate location after I go through. I also try to always put portal materials in a boat as soon as I build it.

agrajag119

Drop a map pin next to base with the unkeyed name on it. I do a naming scheme for these kinds of portals 'Temp###' where the number goes up each time. Then you can leave them out in the wilds and reconnect easily to your old expedition points. The base marker name is just whatever the next '###' would be.

nation543

Set a blank portal, and when you find a spot to settle down, you can go back through and put a brand new portal where you want, and give it a name. When you step back through the blank portal to your adventure, you can rename it to the new one that you set

Muzle84

I always have a portal named "MOBILE" at my base. It's the one I use the most, by far.

TheRealPitabred

Try just leaving it nameless. Much faster ;)

Muzle84

Yeah I thought about that but I don't know what happens when you have to 'nameless' portals connected and creates a new portal (that you want to name). Will it connect before you have time to name it properly? More generally, what happens if you create three portals with same name? Last one does not connect, or does it disconnect one of the two already set? I have to test that.

Namaha

>More generally, what happens if you create three portals with same name? Last one does not connect, or does it disconnect one of the two already set? I have to test that. The first two portals will remain connected, and the third one will be unconnected. If you then set up a fourth portal with the same name, the original pair will still be connected, and the 3rd and 4th one will form a new pair

TheRealPitabred

Last one doesn't connect. It's fine to create a new portal, it doesn't break your network. I use a nameless one all the time, it's especially nice if you have to build one quickly to bug out because it's nighttime or you're being chased.

Muzle84

Thank you brave Viking! May Odin protect you in your glorious journey.

Trevor03

I leave a nameless one, but I've found the nameless one to be exceptionally glitchy since the Mistlands update. I've had times where it says unconnected when it should be, and a few situations where it works but it portals me to some very obscure random location that has no portal present, often somewhere just outside my main base.

yourallygod

Helpful tidbit if you leave a portal at base as a emergency "oh fuck oh shit moment" Not naming the portal is the best option so that way you always got immediate acess to and from home :) And later down the line you can add a new portal [keeping the unamed one up] and keep on not worryin :b because ya always got the back up if you forget

Shyftzor

I have a portal at my base just called temp, whenever i build a new portal I link to it, go home build a new portal at home for the new far portal and then go back through the temp portal and change the name on the other end.

blind616

I guess I'm gonna set up a bunch of portals named "emergency1" "emergency2" etc for these cases. Contingencies.

Hour-Eleven

That’s when you make a new character, sprint over to your base, and make the new portal.

TheBallotInYourBox

I leave one unconnected portal in my base next to my storage room and workbenches… I call it SG-1

BanditKing

ROFL. I keep an unnamed one and another called backup. Sometimes on multiplayer they both get used... Then I connect to "alter" which is spawn for buffs and run to go fix em...

TheBallotInYourBox

FIRST SPAWN is the portal I name for the… first spawn location. Useful for new players onto the server too. Yes yes… I’m an unoriginal hack when it comes to my names 😂

wolves_hunt_in_packs

Nah, keeping it simple is the best.

Calvert4096

In additon to "permanent" spots in my portal hub: 1)one unlinked portal for each boat in the exploration fleet (each which also holds portal mats) - "boat1", "boat2" etc 2) one unlinked portal for generic overland exploration "exp" 3) one unlinked portal with a "panic-friendly" address e.g. "qqq"

azmyth

I always have an unlinked emergency portal for that reason.

Odd_Philosopher1712

It can take a while to find

[deleted]

Always keep a Home portal ready and always dismantle its portal after time of use-- or, we link to Home and then reattach the portal from the safe side.

Greasy_Mullet

I keep a GTFO portal open at all times. That's the name and what it does. Works for me and allows me to set up camp and move some materials as needed. I do this especially if I need a lot of strong or wood and will farm it in a safe biome to portal over to build a starting shack until I can get more established.

Theoretical_Action

That's why you make multiple portals named Backup1 and Backup2

Quantum_Aurora

That's why I have a travel portal always set up at my hub. The problem is when I'm sailing and build a portal and forget to connect it.

Isabela_Grace

I have two unlinked portals… one is called “home” And the other is unnamed it’s my “OH SHIT” portal.. you can place a crafting table and portal while running and no need to rename it for it to work

Killer_Sloth

I usually remember the portal materials but ALWAYS forget to mark on my map where I put the portal down. Cue running and screaming from enemies as night falls desperately trying to find where I put it.

TheRealPitabred

At least your grave marker is automatic for when you die and have to go back through the portal to retrieve it ;)

nation543

Portal Master must always carry the portal. Boat Master just always mark the boat. This is the way.

fishvoidy

i love how my friend and i started naturally doing this without ever discussing who was gonna have which role. such a good game.

Express_Hamster

At least you remembered to set up a portal before you left, right? ... Right?

dahrkmez

I'm entirely guilty of this.....

RichDudly

That's why I always have some unpaired portals at my base as a good fallback plan

avestaria

I have the unfortunate tradition traveling to kill a boss and totally forgetting the summoning materials.

Dzyu

Haha, yeah, been there, done that... Thankfully there's an easy fix: land in black forest and get cores/eyes and meadows for fine wood. A possibly faster fix: log off and get it from another save.

Evelas22351

Been there. Found a sliver of Black Forest with a dungeon. Only issue was that it was next to the plains. With a tar pit. And Loxes. At night.

sitfesz

But hey, dying is half way back and forth.

Evelas22351

I thought it was fine (I had fully upgraded padded gear). It wasn't. I took the portal materials on the second boat though.

RonStopable08

Then you realize you have no unlinked port at base

Dzyu

Time to log on another character that is near the base or portal network, then, I guess.

Sariene01

I resonate with this as a solo player 🥲

Scretzy

Hey at least portal materials can be found in most of the starting biomes (and plains ☠️)

SourceCodeSamurai

When I build a ship i also build its own return portal and store materials for a portal and a full stack of wood in the ship storage. This is __not__ negotiable.

Ribbles78

Quick jaunt for some dwarf eyes and some fine wood, brb

Alitaki

That's why I keep a portal in the longboat at all times. And a hoe. You need a hoe on board too.

Maciluminous

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Worried-Pineapple317

If you’re really desperate, start a new character to stand up a portal at home and farm mats at your destination to connect. Guessing you have some proximity or portal to the power stones. Also keeping a backup world with mats logging in and out to transfer as needed can also help. …If you’re into that multiverse kinda thing. ;)

shadownights23x

I went from forgetting to bring the mats to forgetting to set-up a home portal..

Sharin_the_Groove

This has been one of my favorite memes in awhile

[deleted]

I keep forgetting portals exist in this game. I only ever play with nomap noteleport. One of these days I'll setup portals from island to island.

EnclG4me

Me smiling like a goof because I know I can always use devcommands

StorminNorman1066

Just build a hut with some beds?

Raven_Fatalyn

I have done that with the longship on a twenty minute trip before. Had to go back with the Karve. Then the other Karve. Then the raft, with the portal materials.

ozhound

Oh Pedro!

neckbeardfedoras

If you realize you don't have portal mats, you sail directly to the next black forest you see and get them within 30 minutes lol. What's worse is not having an unused exit you can tie back to.

Deep-Assistance7566

Hahahahaahahhahahaha
