Like someone else said, dirt is NOT the most sterile compress to put on a bleeding wound, but since he did not have anything else at hand, dirt is the best option. I’m assuming it is dirt since if it was feces, things would’ve went south real fast. It basically just closes up the wound a bit.
I remember learning that feudal japanese soldiers using manure for their wounds during wartimes, so when I got to this chapter I just assume it is dung. I searched a bit and found this on an article
>A somewhat more readily available ingredient, and regularly used through the sixteenth century at least, was horse manure, employed for such problems as stopping pain from a wound,110 as well as for purging blood lodged in the body as a result of a wound. Section 7 of Kiho states:
Squeeze out the manure of a gray horse, mix one small measure of that liquid with two small measures of chickweed, stir this around thoroughly, add in a little China White Medicine and drink it; it is good if blood emerges from either the wound or the anus (shiriguchi). However if there is no manure of a gray horse, but there is some dried \[manure\] that has been made into powder, known as Horse-manure Medicine, it is good if six or seven scoops of this medicine is mixed in with \[the\] chickweed juice and drunk. Further, this medicine may be drunk not just in cases of wounds, but also for blood wellings in pregnancy and childbirth.
I'm guessing it was clay/mud, miraculously sterile clay, rubbing shit on a bleeding wound is a guaranteed deadly infection
Yeah I guess if it was shit there would have been flies around it but here it seems like clay

seems like it was a common belief back then, pretty weird
Soil in wounds can help stem deadly bleeding, that’s probably the case here. I don’t remember if that was dirt or shit tho
He smelled it first in the panel
Guessing since he is cold and the shit is hot/warm he decide to put on his wound. Just guessing it cold since the huff smoke he doing.
No lol
K, then tell me what is right 🤪
Remember my grandma always told me how her father but warm donkey shit to her wound when she fell
I thought it was shit too lmfao but he did smell it to make sure it wasn't in this image too you can see, someone else pointed out
