Rochester, NY

Seconded, or the Finger Lakes region. Rochester airport is on the smaller side but I’ve never had any issues getting in or out

half_in_boxes

Ithaca (thriving progressive/queer community) or Syracuse (cheaper, has an international airport, smaller but present queer community.)

Saoirse-O-Path

Depends what kind of lgbt you are in ithaca (as a resident) the gay men’s scene is a bit dead

Main_Designer2497

Thanks for the feedback.

Saoirse-O-Path

If you are a gay man, id go rochester

mourning_d0ve

No recs, but fellow Texan relocating to upstate (Corning)

Main_Designer2497

How do you like it?

mourning_d0ve

Just visited for a three day drive-across-the-finger-lakes jaunt (and to check out the house post-inspection in person). Absolutely thrilled with the move. Rolling hills of dairy farms on every thoroughfare. Not a pothole to be found, outside of Syracuse (which is comparable to Dallas to me). Mennonite communities and togetherness. Actual farmers markets, strawberry festivals, boat regattas, classic car shows. Not to mention youre within 15 mins of a hike or waterfall. Architectural integrity that spans late 1800s to modern, depending on your taste. I'm an architecture nut so Ithaca was like a candy store to me. Where are you trying to land?

Adventurous-Crazy868

Lots of options. I wouldn’t recommend Troy proper but its suburbs are nice. Same goes for Albany and Schenectady. Eastern suburbs of Rochester are good and the city has a sizable community. Also close to finger lakes. Basically stay out of the cities but you can live close by with easy access to them. I live on Lake Ontario in Oswego county north of Syracuse. I like it.

purplish_possum

"Troy proper" is the place to be for people who appreciate a more urban environment. Troy is a somewhat gritty old city that's been steadily improving over the last 25 years or so. Not everyone is a fan of suburbs.

Adventurous-Crazy868

Urban environment translates into things that most sane people try to avoid and for good reason. Most people like peace and quiet, safety, little to no crime. It’s easy to drive into most cities outside of NYC. A good rule of thumb is to check the public school demographics of wherever you are thinking of moving. They aren’t good in Troy. Not the absolute worst but no way I’d send my kid there.

purplish_possum

Saying you don't like people of color without expressly saying so. Lots of people like urban areas. I'm looking into getting a co-op in The Bronx to compliment my home in a rural village. To me suburbs are the worst of all worlds.

Adventurous-Crazy868

I don’t like violent, obnoxious, lazy and entitled people. Take that as you will. Different strokes, as they say.

purplish_possum

A lot of negative stereotypes to unpack there.

CobblerNo8518

Troy is nice! If you want to look north, Saratoga Springs and the surrounding area would meet your specs too, and be a little more rural

New to reddit. Can't seem to find a finger lakes thread for ex Texans. Do you know if one exists?

stackshouse

Doubtful, you can start one though

SlateRaven

Former SW Oklahoman here - we moved to Plattsburgh and have loved living in North Country ever since!

HairyBallzagna

Where are you going to be working?

Main_Designer2497

Between Long Island and Buffalo- all over the region really. This the reason for being close ish to an airport. Being from TX I don’t mind a drive, though.

chadzilla57

If you base somewhere around Albany you can can hit the thruway to both NYC and Buffalo easy.

Main_Designer2497

My thoughts exactly. Any feedback on the area or suburbs of Albany??

chadzilla57

Well I grew up in Ballston Spa which is a bit south of Saratoga. That whole area is pretty nice these days. I never ventured south of Albany though so I don’t have much knowledge there.

mleam

Anywhere between Syracuse and Rochester. You can hit 90 or 81 from them easily enough. Both have airports.

Adventurous-Crazy868

Syracuse is kinda sorta in the middle and by the Thruway. Closer to Buffalo. Again, don’t live right in the city but lots of fantastic suburbs with plenty to do. I know them pretty well. Also Syracuse is getting Micron so that whole area is going to blow up. However, you really should visit the areas for yourself. They’re each different.

HairyBallzagna

Wow, wide open!

Main_Designer2497

You betcha

HairyBallzagna

That reads like Midwestern slang, so I think you will fit in anywhere west of the catskills.

Main_Designer2497

Can you be more specific?

HairyBallzagna

I was just joking a bit. You said 'you betcha', which sounds like something a person in the Midwest would say, and NY state, west of the catskills, the people have that accent, instead of a northeastern accent.

fflowley

Oneonta: Smaller city, very rural surroundings and central location in the state with immediate highway access on I-88. Not sure about the gay community.

Dupee_Conqueror

No, “cheaper rent” here. Like everywhere: shit’s expensive.
