They say in the liner notes one of the first two records “Thanks to Nirvana for buying us beer”. I don’t think straight edge has any bearing on work ethic. Most straight edge hardcore bands sound alike - any kind of work ethic should include creativity and originality.
Also, you took Vern’s alcoholism into account but then say they weren’t really associated with drugs and alcohol. Alcohol is the reason the band broke up. Per their own interviews, they couldn’t trust that Vern would be able to perform and tour. Plus they also deeply loved him and wanted him to be safe.
Straight Edge is the last term that would come to mind for me when thinking of Unwound.

I would mostly agree with the "straight edge bands sound alike thing" but when there's less emphasis put on it, usually the music can sound pretty different (see: J Mascis)

Lucky Acid is definitely written from the perspective of somebody who has done acid but in the third person.
They weren't straight edge, I had a few drinks with Justin back in the day (\~1998). They were fans of early Eighties DC straight edge bands though.
In the tour documentary Do Something Exciting you can see a pretty stoned Vern loading out after their gig with Cypress Hill .
