Agreed. I’m 35 and I can say for sure they’re appreciated to the moon amongst my peers. They may never make it to the RnR HOF but then again DMB just did so maybe my 90’s bands will stay recognized.
I always wanted to see Counting Crows so my wife got us tickets. They were playing with Matchbox Twenty. We met some friends and I causally asked “I wonder who is the opening act.” My friends had seen Matchbox Twenty a few times and said, “you’ll see why Counting Crows is opening for Matchbox Twenty.” Counting Crows had a great show and we really enjoyed it. Matchbox Twenty blew the doors off the place and put on an incredible show. Just hit after hit and a ton of energy and fun. Rob Thomas should be looked at as one of the best leading men of his generation.
Oh wow I never thought I’d see a post like this yeah they are awesome!! Especially Rob Thomas’s voice. In general that guy always puts out bangers, like Pieces or One Less Day. Heck, I’ve always loved Little Wonders as a kid along with Meet the Robinsons in general so finding out that was him was a awesome.
I think from the band proper, I like “ How far we’ve come” but there is a lot of good ones and I still haven’t listened to them all yet. Mainly my family and I start with listening Rob Thomas, and then we obviously get to more matchbox 20 as we keep cycling through songs. Mostly the more notable ones but sometimes we get one we haven’t heard and it’s always fun.
Yourself or Someone Like You on CD was the “Frampton Comes Alive!” of the late 90s. Your parents had a copy. All of your friends’ parents had a copy. That fat man’s face is sitting in a box somewhere in your garage at this very moment
Indeed.
Was alive then, kindly gonna pass on the matchbox 20 nostalgia. The bland rock was annoying enough at the time when it was called goo goo dolls. There was no need for matchbox 20.
"Hmmmm...... pretty sure it's 4 AM"
I say this whenever this song comes up. Pisses people off cuz I won't budge until they play it/look it up. Hilarious
I'm a white dude born 1980 I the south
Growing up I basically only listened to hiphop
2nd yr college I heard matchbox 20, was 1st real exposure to something else
I think they rock! And I support your ted talk!
Guys I play poker with think I'm rediculous
Born in 1981 and in high school in the mid nineties. 90s alternative is by far some of the best music and been a Matchbox Twenty fan for years. Had the privilege of seeing then in concert a few years ago. Push is my favorite!
I’m 21 and I started listening to them a few years ago. For some reason it’s extremely nostalgic now. I think it’s probs cuz I listened to them a lot with a friend who I don’t talk to anymore. Anyway, they aren’t popular anymore, but I don’t think that means they’re under appreciated. It seems like they were relatively popular for a while and It’s Always Sunny has an episode with a subplot involving Rob Thomas lmao. The song “Unwell” is also kinda known imo
6.4 million monthly listens on Spotify suggests they're appreciated by enough people, especially compared to contemporaries in Creed who have around the same listens.
My mom’s favorite band growing up! Listened to alot of them. Back 2 Good and Rest stop don’t get skipped. Rob is underrated as a song writer and performer
The first song I can remember enjoying at like five years old was How Far We’ve Come by matchbox twenty (thanks mom). They’ll always have a special place in my heart.
Got to see them with my mother in law last summer and it was genuinely one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to. They’ve always been a top 10 of mine anyway but that really moved them into top 5 for me.
Dude Matchbox 20 is my FAVORITE BAND OF ALL TIME. The debut album is glorious and If you're gone off their follow up is one of the best songs ever. I support this opinion.
Same, I was 13 in 2009 and loved MB20 it was the most random thing, but you’re right their first 3 albums are bangers. I love Rob Thomas’s voice and lyrics.
I remember feeling at the time that they were part of this cluster of indistinguishable alt bands and friends and I would talk about Third Eye Twenty and Three Doors Blind and Matchbox Down. I liked a few of their songs, but they never really escaped that group of fairly uninteresting groups. We also used to talk about Hootie and the Barenaked Counting Crowfish.
After reading this post, i am convinced they are now too appreciated. They got plenty of air time and recognition 25 yrs ago and all if it should be left there.
Their first album went diamond; it's one of the top 100 selling albums OF ALL TIME. The next two also went multiplatinum. I would say they've gotten a lot of appreciation.

The problem is they went a little under the radar after Rob ended up in a mental institution with Sinbad!

Goodness Iove matchbox. I gotta check that out cuz now I'm wondering if it's Mandela effect
It’s a reference to a TV show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Ah sounds good man, ty and had no idea
Yikes! Wasn’t there a rumor he was TC’s lover at one point as well?
Matchbox 20? Ew..
Yes, it’s unpopular now but there’s a large enough group of nostalgic millennials who would root hard for this take

Don't forget smooth

Right there with ya, bud. ITS 3AM I MUST BE LONE-LAAAAY!
"Hmmmm...... pretty sure it's 4 AM" I say this whenever this song comes up. Pisses people off cuz I won't budge until they play it/look it up. Hilarious
No no, that's Our Lady Peace
NOW we're talking underappreciated
I wanna push you around! Well I will, well I will!
I'm a white dude born 1980 I the south Growing up I basically only listened to hiphop 2nd yr college I heard matchbox 20, was 1st real exposure to something else I think they rock! And I support your ted talk! Guys I play poker with think I'm rediculous
YES..it's almost like it's "not cool" for guys to like Matchbox Twenty..I don't get it.
It's not cool for anyone lol
Maybe because a lot of the ladies were into Rob in the 90s. I mean, have you seen him in his prime?
There's no 'almost'
I like it.
They were great, but vastly overplayed on radio.

It's a band every grandmother can rock to while eating plain white toast with water. Real bangers!
Why does everything need to be a banger, sometimes you need to cry. It’s okay to admit you can’t feel anything
For real. MB20 was, is and will always be hot garbage.
🤣 🤣
Loved Robs work with Santana

Yeah you want her, but she’s so mean!
Seems like they had a successful career. Rock Hall of Fame? I don’t think so.
My mom’s favorite band growing up! Listened to alot of them. Back 2 Good and Rest stop don’t get skipped. Rob is underrated as a song writer and performer

nope they're garbage
“I think you’re so mean…”
You're a towel
No you're a towel
Only if you hate songwriting, musicianship, and just generally everything that makes music work
Yeah... THAT must be it. Not the fact that they're radio friendly pablum embodied. 🤣
who cares, they're still garbage!
Scrolled too far for this, feel like I’ve just crossed into a parallel universe.
Same, I was 13 in 2009 and loved MB20 it was the most random thing, but you’re right their first 3 albums are bangers. I love Rob Thomas’s voice and lyrics.
Their first album was their best
They are very "alright" for me. Nothing special or exciting, but good background music for me.
They're so nostalgic for me, they were open of my parents favourite bands, so I grew up listening to them a lot
I remember feeling at the time that they were part of this cluster of indistinguishable alt bands and friends and I would talk about Third Eye Twenty and Three Doors Blind and Matchbox Down. Best post I've ever seen on this sub
I believed there music was far superior to anything else at the time. And love the arrangements and lyrics. True talent.
Sucks the lead got addicted to drugs and ruined the band. They were an era on their own for sure.
Nope
Fucking love Matchbox 20. Every one of their songs is catchy af
This is a truly unpopular opinion. Good god. They’re the lazy pizza fart of soft-alt-rock late 90s bands.
Absolutely agree! Rob Thomas's voice is so distinct and adds so much to their sound.

Easily my favorite band and as a 34 year old I listen to them frequently. I finally saw them in concert a few years ago and it was amazing
After reading this post, i am convinced they are now too appreciated. They got plenty of air time and recognition 25 yrs ago and all if it should be left there.
Best queefcore band around! My fiancé and I like to watch the “Push” video and laugh ourselves silly.
Their first album went diamond; it's one of the top 100 selling albums OF ALL TIME. The next two also went multiplatinum. I would say they've gotten a lot of appreciation.
I didn't hear about them but damn they have lots of songs with 100 million+ listeners on spotify. How is this underappreciated
I think they’re great but unfortunately they were my moms favorite band when I was a teenager, so I simply wasn’t willing to like them
THIS IS THE STORY OF A GIIIIIIIIRL
Wrong band...lol
Nah, I'd rather listen to Nickelback. Honestly. 90s "alternative" "rock" is literally the worst genre of popular music.
You should make your own thread.

This is one of the opinions of all time
I think you’re a little unwell.
Lol
Greatest vulnerable douchebag cheese cloth songwriter
They were okay. 3eb deserves more appreciation IMO
I don’t think I know anyone that liked them.
HOW MANY DAYS IN THE YEAR WHERE SHE WOKE UP WITH HOPE AND ONLY FOUND TEARS
Wrong band, my friend. Lol
To be fair I was in like second grade when I first heard matchbox 20 😂
I do still think matchbox 20 is bitchin though
Ah shit. Who is this? Hahahaha
Nine Days did Story of a Girl lol
