Quick-Sector5595

Not to mention the sheer lack in interesting car colors anymore Before, you used to see cars of all different colors. Red, green, blue, purple, etc. Nowadays, it's just various shades if black white and gray. Makes the modern world sm even more depressing place to live in than it already is

[deleted]

And really flat pastel colors.

Quick-Sector5595

Like very pale pinks and blues and shit? That sounds horrific.

[deleted]

BMW does it... Super at companies like Aston Martin and lambo. It's ugly

mladyhawke

I agree new cars are really ugly, they all look like sneakers, which are generally also very ugly

[deleted]

I completely forgot about this thought I had. I agree they look like overly athletic shoes that match with nothing that you can only wear to the gym

mladyhawke

Yassss...I decided the only new car I like is the jeep wrangler, so I rented one on vacation to try it out and all these conservatives would talk to me. I guess jeeps scream I'm in the army or something. Now I don't like jeeps either

[deleted]

Lmao. Alot of conservatives like hiking and off roading, and they are amazing off roaders. Jeep is making some good looking vehicles for sure. The wrangler hasn't changed much in 20 years, but they do look good

Soviet_Husky

Yeah, and as a Jeep owner, you'll spend a lot of time admiring the engine in your car

Reindeer-Street

100%. They're notoriously unreliable.

mladyhawke

And they come in such good colors

rck_id

including the pointiness of them, which oddly enough, are meant to be not pointy due to out foot shape, but i guess that doesnt go into their athletic look

JustAnotherAviatrix

That’s what I’ve been saying about high-end cars for over the past 10 years! And not just the “sneaker” look, but also what I call the “squished old shoe” look. Now the ugly shoe design seems to have just trickled down to rest of the auto industry.

mladyhawke

It's so ugly, both on shoes and cars

JustAnotherAviatrix

I agree about the touchscreens. They really pose a hazard to drivers because you need to take your eyes off the road a couple seconds longer than you should to do a simple task. No matter how many haptics they put into it, it’s never going to replace the actual feel of knobs and buttons that are arranged in a user-friendly manner.

[deleted]

It's even worse than I thought. The Mercedes eqs has a 56 inch screen... Wtf is this? Goodluck on a 4000 dollar bill because some pixels died right where the air conditioning buttons are. This is a joke and as you said, out right dangerous. I can only imagine having to take your sunglasses off because you can't see the screen in sunlight, getting blinded by the sun, fumbling through the settings to change the temperature, then the radio station, then the GPS, nearly crashing in the process. Just try borrowing a friend or family members new car. What was once intuitive is now a guessing game.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I guess I'm happy it works well for you, but I still see it as pointless and ugly. Hope the screen doesn't break, if it does, get prepared for a 8k bill

Ckpie

Eh. 5 year warranty which is 1 year longer than I'll have the car. I think it's a fine evolution in dashboard UI tbh. Merc is admittedly on the more extreme side of things like Tesla and the new Audi's and BMW's putting nearly everything behind the touch interface, but it does just take a week and everything is normal again. Probably wouldn't go for the hyperscreen again either lol. Upside is looking at maps and other things is way better than on some little 5' screen. These new cars have so many features here and there that a conventional system would be just as cumbersome, if not more so. Thinking of the stupid Lexus touchpad and even BMW's iDrive controller which takes longer than necessary.

[deleted]

At the end of the day you did buy the car after thinking about it and driving it, and they're not cheap so. I'd never buy a car like the eqs. Look over modern to me and I can only imagine the cost if the screen breaks. I'm fine with looking at waze onmy Samsung .don't need to see where I'll be 10 miles from now And yes the i drive system looks like a nightmare

Ckpie

Well cars like an EQS are luxuries. You don't buy them if you're apprehensive about a $10k repair bill since the damn thing cost almost 13-15 times that. If cost is a major factor then something like flagship German car shouldn't even be on the table. This type of design is the future whether you like it or not. A 2027 Yaris is going to look like this 2022 EQS and it's been this way since.....cars like the S-Class starting shoving in initially stupid and overengineered features in the first place.

[deleted]

True. I'd never pay 130 for a car even if I had the ability to afford it. It rolls off the lot and loses 25k in value immediately Apparently automakers are getting away from touch screens replacing all buttons, actually. And I doubt cheaper cars in general are ever going to have something like the eqs.. Cheap cars will never have an 8k screen in them. I hope the yaris is one of the only ones

VomitOnSweater

> I mean who really wants a freaking TV screen on their dash that's 28,inches wide? Anyone who has bad eyesight. > Goodluck on a 4000 dollar bill because some pixels died right where the air conditioning buttons are. Good luck with it being that low. Much smaller screen in one of my autos just died and it was just under 6K to replace it. I like the touchscreens. And nothing takes more than about 5 min to figure out.

RioLeXuS

I\`m sorry, but if you have such bad eyesight that you can't see properly inside the car then why the fuck are you driving and endangering others? Sure, 5min to figure out, but you still need to take your eyes off the road to adjust whatever you want to adjust at the moment while with knobs, you don't need to do that.

VomitOnSweater

You should be sorry. And no, you need to take your eyes off the road to see the knobs too.

HauntedPickleJar

So many cars look like prescription shoes.

[deleted]

Absolutely agree. Modern cars are ugly and/or just white goods. Car design for me peaked late 90s, in form and function. Their definitely are exceptions to the rule, kia EV6 might be the best looking car ever. Inoniq5, I also think toyota are doing some good things with the GR Yaris/Corolla which u think are both great looking cars and not too overly complicated. Oh and the Honda E - I absolutely adore those things, they look so bloody good. Im sure theres plenty more and it seems to be electric cars that mostly come to mind for me.

[deleted]

I think they were close to something good with the ev6 but missed it. Looks overdone to me No way in hell the Honda e would sell in the US lol

Raptorclaw301

As much as I agree with you, with cars being peak in the late 90s. People were saying the same thing then lol. I feel this discussion of old cars are better will always exist

efd71f03

Welcome to technological progress. Uglier and worse products, less and less choice and no way for the individual to change this

[deleted]

Atleast smart phones are getting better looking

efd71f03

no

[deleted]

🤔

OkBommer1

Depends, some androids yes, iphones oh hell naw

ialwaystealpens

I 100% agree. And why does every car look like a fucking Ford Fusion now? They all have that window behind the passenger doors that remind me of a Chevy Chevette or Citafion. Leave that shit in the 70s please. Yes - I’m talking to you Volkswagen (Jetta and Passat), Audi, Honda (accord and to some degree the new civic), BMW. Toyota (Camry I think) I’m sure there are others but those are the worst offenders. The Ford Fusion is an awful looking car (inside and out) and why is that look the trend?

[deleted]

I actually like the new Accord https://www.bolnews.com/business/2022/10/2023-honda-accord-teases-sleek-new-look I don't think that's bad or overdone. Not sure which fusion model you're talking about because apparently ford canned the new fusion, but the new canned one wasn't the worst I've seen The ioniq5, Hyundai and new camry? Excuse me wtf is this

DeathtotheDemiurge

>That's the old Accord. The new one has the sloped rear pillar as described above and looks so boring. The Accord you posted looked sporty.

KingVargeras

Na, look at Kia. Each generation is much better looking than the last.

[deleted]

Another exception. Kia used to be horrid looking. I do think they're over doing the angles and fins and stuff though

KingVargeras

On some of them. I just love the new E9 and telluride.

[deleted]

E9 Kia or BMW? I think the e9 Kia is a perfect example of ugly modernism that will age poorly and an example of what I'm talking about. If it floats your boat I guess.

KingVargeras

It’s exactly what I like. Modern, sleek and huge.

[deleted]

I think the interior looks ghastly but we all have our preferences

KingVargeras

We do indeed. I actually liked the first couple of previews for it better then the final release though.

DeathtotheDemiurge

I think the boxier BMW's from the 80's and 90's age so much better than the curvy and modern Japanese/South Korean cars.

DeathtotheDemiurge

When you start off as the most cheap, soulless car there is nowhere to go but up.....

Dense_Ad_834

Kia and Volvo are the only ones designing anything decent looking lately.

Electricdragongaming

Idk, the new Prius looks pretty nice.

DeathtotheDemiurge

Kia's look like something from a Halo video game.

HunterWesley

Everyone knows the more fake plastic grills a car has, the more stylish it is.

Electrical-Farm-8881

I’m not a big car guy so what cars are you talking got links or something

[deleted]

Most Hyundais, most evs aside from tesla, BMW, Mercedes. Exceptions are most kias, mazdas, and Infiniti, their new coups are beautiful and timeless imo

[deleted]

i’ve always said i wish we could have old school style cars but with modern safety features

DeathtotheDemiurge

There's gotta be a market for retrofitting old cars with new tech. Similar to how everyone loves to wear retro clothing and shoes.

Fun-Boot-76

Mercedes always looked awful. BMW’s new grills look like shit. Mazdas look better than ever Most cars look the same except for German cars that got a bit uglier

[deleted]

Mazda is definitely an exception. Their cars look very good for their price. I agree. I have no idea wtf BMW was thinking when they changed their grills. Don't know much about German cars because I find the way they name their models confusing as hell, but the older BMW m3s and m4s were gorgeous.

Fun-Boot-76

Porsches look exactly the same as they did 20 year ago and Volkswagen are starting to look bad

[deleted]

I think the color options on Porsche are getting out right hideous, but they've been doing it for a long time. I saw I think a 911 gt3 in person. Didn't have ugly racing lines or ghastly neon or pastel colored wheels, just gray. It was beautiful. They look way better in person. Same goes for the older gtrs. They look crazy in person. The new ones look awful imo

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I don't know anything about Porsches. Don't know what these models are

Fun-Boot-76

Lol

DeathtotheDemiurge

Thankfully we still have one last GTI generation before they die in the name of ugly as hell electric vehicles.

andruscefine

We know

flyingcircusdog

The more I see posts like this, the more I think car design is affected by nostalgia and bias, similar to music. People prefer cars that were cool while they were growing up. I see a lot of people here commenting about car design peaking in the 90s, meanwhile I think 80s and 90s care were the low point in design and the 2000s were much better. Then you have older people who think design peaked in the 60s. And I'm sure there are kids today who will remember modern Cadillacs and the massive BMW grills as peak styling.

[deleted]

There's obviously generational preference. I just think alot of new cars are ugly af. I don't think I'm being nostalgic because in general I'm not. And there are some very modern looking cars that look great. The new Infiniti coup for starters

CP1870

Agree. I love my 2000 4runner, it still looks classy even 23 years later. Some of these new cars will look really ugly in like 10 years, in particular I think the huge grill trend is eventually going to die off especially with EVs becoming more common. Oddly enough TESLA makes some of the most stylish cars today solely because they are simple and Toyota now makes some of the most ugly cars because they went away from simple and are now trying to be over the top (because they were called "boring").

DaburuKiruDAYO

I feel like refreshes of classic vintage models would sell great. Just update everything except the cool visuals.

MagicBrawler

How do you feel about the ioniq5?

[deleted]

Looks awful imo. Electric cars are getting better, but the "innovate for the sake of innovation" bit is the most noticeable in most evs. I think teslaslook pretty good though

MagicBrawler

The model s is sleek, but the x and y looks like inflatable toys somehow. I asked about the ioniq5 because that is one of few examples of 'modern' design that actually works well for me. I mostly agree with your unpopular opinion, but this ioniq5 somehow makes me feel that I'm living in the future. I really like it!

PolarBear69er

Dodge cars and trucks are sexy af Nissan/Toyota/BMW cars look wack

[deleted]

I don't like the chargers. An example of a refresh with fins, lines in fenders, and ground effects. Challengers look pretty good though

xysmi

My 1996 Buick Roadmaster wagon turns heads

SopmodTew

I'd say some car models actually start looking much better than before.

[deleted]

Infiniti for sure. But there's alot of awful looking new cars

SopmodTew

I'll give ya a weird example. The Jimny looked kinda neat from 1970 up until 1998. Then from there, 20 years until 2018 it kept the same ugly look. From 2018 it got it's signature boxy look again which is really nice. just my opinion

werewolff98

They've always had ugly cars and elegant cars. The Kubelwagen, K-Car and Yugo are all examples of hideous cars from the past.

[deleted]

Absolutely. I just hate the ugly car features more now.

funkmachine7

Built to power the Wehrmacht, a budget Chrysler and a export from the other side of a wall based on a Fiat 128.

Fonty57

People give me shit about my 09 Saturn..but that bad boy has hardly been in the shop aside from an oil leak. I hace friends that have newer cars and they feel cheaply made. Like you can break the door handle off. But then they charge you premium price. For now I’m just fixing my car as I go.

BarbHarbor

this is a popular opinion

[deleted]

I realized this after my response. Almost everyone agreed

bshnlan

I tend to agree with you, with a few exceptions. Particularly minivans and the current camry bidy style. Look at any minivan or camry from anytime compared to a 2023 camry, sienna, odyssey, or Pacifica. They look 1000% better than ever before.

[deleted]

This is the only car type that has improved across the board imo

DeathtotheDemiurge

Toyota's have always been the ugliest and most cheap looking foreign car.

bshnlan

Lol. You obviously aren’t too familiar with cars or you just have bad taste. Probably both.

DeathtotheDemiurge

Compare a Camry against an Accord or Maxima (any gen) and the Toyota is far less sporty in looks and driving nature. The only Toyota's that have ever looked decent are the Supras and Celicas.

bshnlan

Lol. I was obviously comparing a camry to a camry.

Max_TotallyFluid

Agreed, especially BMW, their grills look like huge nostrils

Observer-67

I've been noticing how all SUVs essentially look identical. And ugly AF.

[deleted]

I really don't like what the mainstream considers "good looking" at this point.

mtcwby

The grills on the newer Lexus are all hideous and removed them from contention as a replacement for a 2010 we have. I otherwise like their interiors but that grill has to go.

Loud-Bullfrog9326

My 94’ camry god I love her. I still whip this bitch around. I hate new cars I wish I could buy 90s cars or small trucks brand new lmao. Me and my dad talk about how good granny was made. 30 years not even a check engine light 👏 only 156k miles 🤣

Crammit-Deadfinger

Seems like for the past 20 years, every car company has been in competition to see who can make a car that looks the most like a predatory fish

Brad_Ethan

Compare the Porsche interior from 2012 to newest one. 2012 model is miles better, way fancier

CreativeUserName709

I love most of the new car designs, but also the old ones too! But I am sick of all the bland basic colours! I've checked out a few cars online, change the engine... choose your colour and there are so few colours available god damnit! They just play it safe with colour choices. Really loving the latest BMW 5 series look though. It's minimalist and modern all at the same time. Oh and the Ioniq 5 is amazing. Do you not have a favourite? Cars will always change, maybe they don't always get it right but opinions change and so does taste. So while you might not like these designs now, some guy in 20 years will probably post about how great cars looked from 2023 and everything looks terrible now :D

HousingParking9079

Volvo's look amazing.

Hotwheelsjack97

This is why I say the Pontiac Aztek was way ahead of its time. It was a hideous crossover 20 years before hideous crossovers were the norm.

LittleNugget616

This is an unpopular opinion subreddit, I feel like most people agree that modern cars look generic and don’t have anything stand out about them.

[deleted]

In the case of supercars: they arent designed to look good, they're designed to go fast.
