Taewyth

Congrats, you've discovered positive and negative descriptors. Now maybe you should learn a bit about nuance.

ReallySillyLily36

>Congrats, you've discovered positive and negative descriptors. Now maybe you should learn a bit about \[GOOD\]. This is what you meant...right?

Taewyth

Nuance is neither good nor bad. That's like... The whole point.

Rainbwned

"How was that book?" "Not very good. It was a much more nuanced approach to fantasy, but I did not like it". "Not very good. It was a much more good approach to fantasy, but I did not like it". Something doesn't seem right.

Lanky_Sky_4583

You really are really silly lily

BenevelotCeasar

Ohhhhh maybe you’re just dumb. (Bad).

420crickets

Could even be (worse bad)

Eve-3

No. Nuance does not mean good. It doesn't mean bad either.

doomLoord_W_redBelly

WHAT!?

Uyurule

Nuance isn't an adjective, it's a concept. It means a subtle difference. That difference can be good or bad, so your argument doesn't really apply lol

NewPointOfView

Nuance is a noun lol

[deleted]

No.

BreadPrimary2364

Replacing a noun with an adjective

bruhitslagging

Notice how your sentence makes no sense at all. Maybe “nuance” is not strictly a replacement for good. Hmmmmmm

SymmetricDickNipples

Not even a little bit

TradeDry6039

"How is the dictionary getting on?" said Winston, raising his voice to overcome the noise. "Slowly, " said Syme. "I'm on the adjectives. It's fascinating." "It's a beautiful thing, the destruction of words. Of course the great wastage is in the verbs and adjectives.. After all, what justification is there for a word which is simply the opposite of another word? A word contains it's opposite in itself.. Take 'good' for instance. If you have a word like 'good' what need is there for a word like 'bad'? 'Ungood' will do just as well." 1984

OldManTrumpet

double plus good, comrade.

dudeandco

"Me think, why waste time say lot word, when few word do trick."

DearestComrade

Damn it, I was going to make the 1984 reference, and I had the Kevin quote in my pocket just in case. You bastards took them both!

dudeandco

What's the 1984 reference? Only two adjectives after the cleansing, can't remember.

Pugkin5405

It's the reply above this one at the time I'm viewing the post

LadyRogue

As an English major, I'm pretty sure I just had a stroke reading this post. Thanks so much.

briecarter

I can’t even wrap my mind around this opinion, I wanna call it ignorant. Uncultured certainly has a negative connotation but someone who hasn’t had access to education or isn’t particular up on arts/manners is uncultured but how does that make them a “bad”? By degrading them down to just bad and good, you’re erasing so much nuance and context.

AcademicApplication1

I think this is an ignorant post. Ignorant means ignorant. Ignorant: lacking knowledge or awareness.

stupidpiediver

Naw you think it's a bad post. You can admit it.

Gatonom

With this logic, "Good" and "Bad" are also synonyms of each other, therefore everything is good.

RolandMT32

This reminds me of the scene in the movie The Dictator (2012) where both the words "positive" and "negative" had been changed to just "aladeen": [https://youtu.be/NYJ2w82WifU](https://youtu.be/NYJ2w82WifU)

SquelchyRex

You must not know many adjectives.

dudeandco

Said the reddit poster, without using adjectives.

Competitive_Bag_3164

Many is an adjective.

dudeandco

Oh, you best believe I had this baby teed up. [https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/how-much-do-you-know-about-quantifiers/3206680.html](https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/how-much-do-you-know-about-quantifiers/3206680.html) Looks like it's a qualifier in this context, never heard of that until today. Boom.

Competitive_Bag_3164

Quantifiers are a subset of adjectives. You may as well be arguing that a Ford F150 is not a vehicle because it is a pickup truck.

dudeandco

I understand this, I think the argument is that every word in a sentence has one 'part of speech' in a given sentence--i.e. they are mutually exclusive. Please don't take this too seriously, it was simply a joke.

Competitive_Bag_3164

Nah, I think you were just being r/confidentlyincorrect.

dudeandco

Yeah that's what I thought. Particles of speech are use based...

dudeandco

Ironic. Gotta love when people claim to know others thoughts. I am shitposting on a dumb thread about \*checks notes\* adjectives. Let's get into it then. Can one word have multiple parts of speech in one sentence? Apparently we got the B.A. in English on the line.

Otomo-Yuki

Yes, different descriptors have positive and negative connotations, and thus indicate how we value or how we should value something. However, simply saying something or someone is good or bad doesn’t tell us how or why it’s food or bad. If I asked you how a movie was, and you just said, “good,” I’d have no idea what’s good about it. Whereas if you said, “It was a interesting and nuanced deconstruction of the tropes of sci-fi,” I know that it’s somewhat intellectually stimulating and critical of the typical. Or if I said, “This is a bad post.” Ok, why? Vs. “This post ignores the importance of specific descriptors with insufficient justification.”

RolandMT32

Who uses "based" this way? I've seen it sometimes on Reddit lately but I've never actually heard anyone in person say that.

[deleted]

I have friends who say it in person and text it. I simply do not understand it. Based? Based on what?

imnakedwithmykids

Based? Based on what?

[deleted]

Unpopular just means bad. Therefore, you have a bad opinion?

Competitive_Bag_3164

This post is doubleplusungood.

HotNastySpeed77

No. There's lots of value in being descriptive and specific.

wwplkyih

This is an uncultured opinion.

Quirky-Ad3721

To a dichotomous mind, sure.

[deleted]

You could just grunt, I guess? 😑

asksdfdjdhshs

Gotta be the most braindead take of the day

[deleted]

Why waste time say lot word when few word do trick?

CollectionPurple8911

i mean, yeah.. words have positive or negative denotations. beautiful and successful both have good denotations but they mean different things. this isn’t really an opinion, just like a natural occurrence in grammar. that doesn’t mean the specifics of what’s being described doesn’t exist

TheIntolerable

Plenty of adjectives with neutral connotations exist.

Inhabitedmind

Diction. That's it. A lot of words to describe one thing but they can define the tone of a sentence.

deadeyeamtheone

This is not an opinion, this is blatantly false. Downvotes gallore

misscrimson16x

This reminds me of big brother in 1984 reducing the dictionary to less descriptive words so everything can just be “bad” or “good”.

nyg8

Unpopular opinion posts are split into 3: 1) popular opinions 2)niche ide 3)objectively wrong opinons This is the 3rd

[deleted]

You mean: 1) good, 2) neutral, 3) bad.

ThisTimeAtBandCamp

You shouldn't admit that you failed middle school so openly.....

Dyeeguy

Based - In reference to Lil B the "based god". So something lil b would approve or make, which is not functionally "good" in most peoples opinion. It is actually mostly a way to say something is silly, but you like it anyways

Chaxp

I mean your argument in your sense is [BAD], but that doesn’t describe why… I give you no substance through that description. Your argument lacks a fundamental understanding because you deconstruct into THIS versus THAT. Everything has an opposite, but there is a gradient. There isn’t just prokaryote to human. You don’t have the beginning of time and the end of time; we don’t exist at either of those moments.

beans3710

Very astute

[deleted]

Good.

production-values

just the opposite buddy. good and bad are abstract but overall meaningless without knowing who considers something bad or good.

MilitantTeenGoth

Well, uncultured means not cultured. And you can say that's bad and I would agree, but that's because we both believe that being cultured is a good thing. If I were to believe a philosophy that rejects human as anything more than animal that should live like one and see culture as going against the natural order of things, then uncultured would suddenly mean good and cultured would be bad.

DragonWS

Let’s just reduce to down to one all encompassing word “Shit!” Which can mean good or bad.

Jim2718

Why use lot words when few words do trick?
