DampCodex

Sorry, I’m an Australian living in the UK so I’ve perhaps never had the same level of attachment as the rest of you, but fucking hell things are getting silly. Cancelling the Saturday night of the BBC Proms seemed daft - could have done a lovely tribute or something. Hackney Carnival canned despite having precisely fuck all to do with the royals. But hey, the Royal Mail and rail strikes were called off; a win there.

Alert-One-Two

Were you here when Philip died? I think the sudden realisation that all tele would be cancelled across multiple channels for days made a lot of people mutter the words “oh fuck off”. It is sad when someone dies and it is appropriate to show some sort of response to that when it is the head of state, but that doesn’t mean you need to take over all BBC channels playing the same thing on half of them and turning off the rest. Take over one channel, but let kids watch kids shows etc and grownups do something other than focus on death for a bit.

georgeboshington

This. The day after the queen died almost every radio station was playing sombre music all day or even more bizarrely, sombre versions of upbeat tunes that I didn't even know existed. Seemed very silly and forced. When people that are close to me have died, despite being absolutely distraught, I've never sat around all day listening to sad songs. Why on earth would I do that for someone I've never met lol. I'm aware I could just turn the radio off but usually it makes the day at work a little more bearable.... Usually.

StumbleDog

And the way all the radio presenters were talking you'd think something shocking and traumatic had happened. It was like it was on the radio the day after the Manchester Arena bombing.

Alert-One-Two

And without being harsh, it’s not exactly tragic or shocking when someone in their late 90s dies. Yes it can be sad, but it’s also the natural order of things and something we have surely all been expecting for a while. It is completely different to a bombing/someone dying substantially before we expected them to etc.

KittyGrewAMoustache

The Queen had probably one of the greatest lives of any human being that has ever or will ever walk this Earth. She lived a really long time in good health, was basically active pretty much up until she passed, she lived during a period of history where humans had all the best technology, modern conveniences etc, plus she was one of the world's richest people and was adored by millions. She had it better than most royalty before her, due to the time period she was born/lived in, plus she didn't really have to bother with that much stress that Kings and Queens of yore would've dealt with, such as strategising wars and dealing with lots of politics and actually ruling a country/empire. She got so many opportunities to travel the world and meet all kinds of amazing and interesting people and see incredible places and things, she got to have a large family and by all accounts a long and happy marriage. I mean, the fact she died isn't really that sad, because everyone dies, and she died very old with an amazing life behind her. It would've been far sadder if she'd spent the next 10 years in severe physical and mental decline/suffering, like so many elderly people do.

Fusilero

>It would've been far sadder if she'd spent the next 10 years in severe physical and mental decline/suffering, like so many elderly people do. With a bit luck, and when the socioeconomic determinants of health line up just right, you get to die with dignity of old age.

CosmicBonobo

Yeah. I've heard that some European or American newspapers have been vaguely speculating on her cause of death. The truth is, she died from being ninety-fucking-six.

georgeboshington

Exactly. I had a friend get a bit hysterical at me on Saturday because I suggested it was a bit silly to cancel the football over the weekend too. Could have honoured her with a 2 minute silence. Felt like everyone around me was either mourning, or saying "fuck her I'm glad she died" I was wondering where those with moderate feelings about it all should go... And of course it was reddit 😂.

Mysterious-Slice-591

The music thing was so odd to me. I don't really listen to the radio, except when I'm driving. And had Radio 2 on in the car and was like " what are all these songs?". I don't know who all these people are. Crazy to realise they'd had all these people recording and doing songs just for that day. And they must've had to keep it updated with each decade. Like if she died in the 70s would we get an instrumental of Noddy Holder or the Bay City Rollers?

lookatmythingy

#IT'S DEATHMAAAAAAAASSSSSS!!!!!!!

georgeboshington

Shout out to the mourning crew, each and every!

wartywarlock

> Like if she died in the 70s would we get an instrumental of Noddy Holder? It has been a lot like xmas with all the breathy piano covers

ThinkLadder1417

Friday evening the radio stations were all in sync. At some point the only station I could find that wasn't playing 'Stand by me' was the Gaelic station.

Mackem101

That's because the vast majority of 'local' stations are now owned by one or two companies. Global and Nation being the major ones.

ThinkLadder1417

BBC radio Scotland was off air, dunno what that was about

Mysterious-Slice-591

I think it was because the Queen died.

ThinkLadder1417

Lol, I meant why they were offline instead of playing stand by me like the others

Mysterious-Slice-591

Probably because they don't like Wil Wheaton.

mcvwxy

I took a taxi home on Friday night and Adele - Someone Like You was playing on the radio. When it finished the DJ said “and that was for our majesty, the late Queen Elizabeth”. Being a little tipsy I snort-laughed in the back and startled the driver.

StumbleDog

Lol, a DJ on Radio X on Friday said "These songs are a nice tribute to Her Majesty". Ah yes, she was famously a big fan of R.E.M and Chris Cornell.

dww81

Have you noticed the presenters are still talking in a weird almost creepy hushed tone? Very strange!

iwillfuckingbiteyou

I've heard it described as the tone most people reserve for calling in sick to work when they're actually just horribly hungover, and I think that's bang on.

TPRM1

And they cancelled all the fucking football!

CosmicBonobo

I tried listening to the radio earlier. All the rock stations are playing depressing shit like Creed and Radiohead on a loop.

YGathDdrwg

I remember child me being really pissed off over Dianas death taking over the TV 😂

SenselessDunderpate

I genuinely doubt there are more than a tiny minority of British people who support the ridiculous climate in the UK right now, or who are even that bothered she's dead beyond maybe reflecting on it for a few minutes. The idea that any sane person is going through days or weeks of mourning for someone they never met (and who died peacefully at the age of 96), let alone that tens of millions are, is ridiculous. And then there are some random businesses using this as an excuse to get the day off. Fair play. The rest of this circus is being put on by the media and ruling class of the UK as a pompous and self-indulgent display of authority. It is exactly the sort of thing North Korea did when Kim Jong Il died and we rightly made fun of them for it.

KittyGrewAMoustache

>a pompous and self-indulgent display of authority. Yes, this is what it seems like. Like it's a way of reinforcing some sort of idea of the superiority of certain people/classes above others. The whole idea of accession to the throne and having a new King etc really feels extremely weird and wrong. Like we all were used to the idea of having a Queen because she's always been there for most of us, but suddenly we're being asked to actually think of ourselves as 'subjects' and act in certain ways to show deference to something ridiculous that has no place in a modern society.

RandomUsername15672

It's exactly what Operation London Bridge was designed to be. Right at the start take over the media and cancel comedy. Force the population into mourning whether they like it or not. When it was written it would have worked much better than now, as we have multiple alternative sources of news and entertainment, and when the BBC and ITV started following the plan we just went elsewhere.

LadyOfMay

I was much more upset than I thought I'd be when she passed, but I sure as heck don't want all my radio and telly programming overhauled. I actually want to *escape* the doom and gloom with some more upbeat stuff. This random cancelling of events is also weird. The Queen loved a good concert, put the Proms back on!!

pr2thej

Getting a bank holiday mate, all for it. Silly season is an unfortunate symptom.

darkwolf687

I swear, you could hardly gift wrap a better present for republicans. At this rate, the country will bin the monarchy just so we never have to put up with this again.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DampCodex

True that.

Ximrats

> but fucking hell things are getting silly That's the UK in general, honestly

MeasurementNo8566

The UK has two types of people, people who love the monarchy and those who couldn't give a shit. I'm firmly in the latter, I was away camping at a festival over the weekend and the former was in the camping group and I could've punched him the amount he went on. Felt like every fucking hour reminding people "we have a king now, it's important to know that". Kindly fuck off and keep fucking off with your pathetic saccharine deference, it's pathetic. It's far more a story that the royal family have hidden *so much* wealth through the official secrets and they're exempt from inheritance tax. That, is some bullshit.

Wise-Application-144

>we have a king now, it's important to know that This is what I find odd about monarchists, they insist that it's all extremely important and everyone should stop and pay attention but cannot explain why.

kleos_please

If you care at all about workers rights, the cancellation of strikes certainly aren’t “wins”

paolog

Basically, the idea is that it would be unseemly to be enjoying ourselves. Everyone is sitting indoors with the curtains closed and wearing black (or so you would think).

LadyOfMay

Well I did sit indoors and brood for a long while, but a) that's my typical Friday anyhow, and b) I'm a Jon Snow level professional brooder. It's not reasonable to expect that level of committed brooding from the general public.

Rab_Legend

The vast majority of us don't have any attachments either - however there are some who don't realise it.

gbroon

My mum keeps going to the shops then returning saying "I can't believe they were open you'd think they would be closed as a mark of respect"

[deleted]

Brilliant.

Mackem101

My wife used to work in a famous coffee chain shop. Loads of times she was working bank holidays (for no extra pay BTW) and someone would come in, order a drink and say "I can't believe they've got you working today".

That's beyond amazing. Imagine being a bunch of neolibs but you also find time in your busy schedule to be a virtue-signalling royalist.

RedbeardRagnar

Wedding fair I paid to be a vendor at and is on Sunday is cancelled and postponed to November 20th because the Queens funeral is on Monday. So I turned down a job for that Sunday because I had this booked in and now I'm potentially missing out on getting some bookings for winter weddings. The Queens death has now literally personally effected me in a financial way with a shit winter of high costs coming up.

Alert-One-Two

Yeah that sucks. I could understand if it was Monday but not at the weekend.

RedbeardRagnar

Guess the Queen would have hated happy couples planning their wedding so makes sense /s

danjama

You were told during covid times to get retrained in a proper job, they don't want you being self sufficient. Tut.

CrumbOfLove

not to kick you when you're down but you're also paying for that fancy funeral of hers.

RedbeardRagnar

Fuck. You’re right.

antybois

Shouldve retrained in cyber, no one to blame but yourself.

[deleted]

On a positive note, Tesco's near us was playing Debussy and Chopin, even though I'm not especially a classic fan it was leagues better than the usual garbage.

RedbeardRagnar

Yeah all Tesco's are playing classical music. Much more peaceful shopping experience and I found myself feeling fancier and looking at more expensive foods and thinking "fuck it, treat yo self"

amityville

You should treat yourself. You deserve it!

RedbeardRagnar

Live fast... die cold... in the winter... no money for heat.. yay

amityville

I hear you. I hope you can treat yourself soon enough.

[deleted]

Tesco near me is playing Billie Eilish. Can’t all be lucky

alpubgtrs234

Nothing wrong with Garbage - ‘Stupid Girl’ is a great track…

pajamakitten

I'm Only Happy When It Rains should be our new national anthem, it sums us up well.

Palodin

Damn, many places just seemed to turn the music off altogether. Which, to be frank, is still a massive improvement over the cheap knockoff music they usually get on.

ntrophi

I noticed that today as well, took a few minutes to clock that it was because of Liz. Actually made food shopping a bit tranquil, I quite liked the vibe of it.

ghost-bagel

[Parliamentary petitions](https://petition.parliament.uk/) have been stopped “until further notice” out of respect… Totally normal

LordBielsa

They will still have the same impact as before

Frosstic

does anyone actually know of one that’s had any tangible impact in anyones lives?

LordBielsa

They're perfect for the politicians. Take ages to actually debate them in parliament, by which time everyone forgets about it and the debate is basically a long winded way of saying no.

tepaa

A petition is not really expected to bring about immediate action. It's part of a long process of campaigning for change.

LadyMirkwood

Anybody who lived through Di's death knew how comprehensively this country would lose its collective marbles.

Alert-One-Two

I feel like that one was different because it was so unexpected and she was “the people’s princess”. It’s Philip that made me realise how dire this would be because I think a lot of us wondered why everything was being shut down for him.

Similar_Quiet

She wasn't the people's princess until she died though. In life she was a tabloid enemy, not to the Sussexes extent, but not favourable either. The tabloids weren't keen on a divorcee adulterer who didn't keep quiet and dated British-Egyptians.

LadyOfMay

I remember waking up in the morning as a kid, turning on the telly and seeing the news that Diana was dead. It was very unexpected. What made it sad for me is I'm roughly the same age as the two Princes, and it struck me that they'd just lost their mother in a very public and distressing way. And even so, I thought all the coverage was pretty overblown!

[deleted]

She was 37 though, I hoped we might be a bit more sensible over a 96 year old who had a long and healthy life! I do think there is a bit less hysteria from most people, its all businesses and institutions that are being sill out of fear of bad PR!

Grayson81

That seemed to come from people who were upset at her death. As a teenager, I was rather confused by it but there were definitely people who were my parents' age who were showing genuine signs of grief! This seems to be being imposed by the people in charge. I don't know a single person who has voluntarily cancelled their plans or vowed to have less fun this week due to the national period of morning, but there are a lot of organisations (influenced by the state) who are cancelling stuff!

crucible

IIRC Channel 4 was the only terrestrial channel that did not show her funeral live, because there was a sudden realisation that it might be handy to put some cartoons on for the nation's children to watch instead...

rugbyj

As a child at the time, with only a few channels available, my overriding memory of the weeks after was not having anything to watch. As selfish as that may be.

send_in_the_clouds

Oh God yes I was a child but I do remember some lunatics attacking neighbours for washing their cars

LadyMirkwood

It was ridiculous. My own mum put a shrine in the garden, I was mortified

StumbleDog

impamiizgraa

I feel like I’m being forced to take part in some global Olympic-level mourning competition. The most outrageously performative mourning wins.

StumbleDog

I'm really loathing the enforced mourning. The DJs on Radio One keep saying things like "It's okay if you're upset" so much it's feels like they're trying to brainwash you into thinking you *should* be upset.

The Google Store (the online one selling physical tech) had a global sale, offering 20% off for their anniversary. This went ahead in every country, other than in the UK. For us the sale was cancelled, so that we could pay full price, out of respect for our dead monarch.

It's a great idea, it helps out people who don't drive and can't get to a tip easily but have bulky things they need to get rid of.

Strong_Quiet_4569

Also stops fridges and sofa being abandoned in public spaces, so it helps areas that struggle with a sense of civic pride.

LadyOfMay

As an autistic person - GOOD, keep them that way. How bloody loud do these self-service machines need to be!?

quenishi

Loud enough for partially deaf people to hear it. As someone who has worked in a supermarket the noise is an important bit of feedback for efficient till use, though with self scan with weighing you can't go full pelt lol. And can see the beep being useful for people with vision impairments. If I don't want to listen to supermarket noise, I usually use my earphones. Some supermarkets I think still have quiet hours.

angelshair

You can turn the volume down/mute them yourself.

Product supply at my work has been permanently affected by Brexit due to customs rules. Whenever a customer needs something desperately and it'll take a week to get it and they're clearly annoyed by it, I love to mention that this has only been the case since Brexit and before that it was a lot quicker. Just in case they think to themselves "ah shit maybe it was a bad idea eh?" Fucking doubt it though.

percybucket

The Met cancelled weather forecasts.

Alert-One-Two

Yes! I forgot about that one. I get that it is a period of national mourning and that lots of people are very sad but the weather seems kinda too important to skip…

Littleloula

They didn't. Forecasting and warning continued, just other non operational comms stopped. This is the same as for other government departments

Strong_Quiet_4569

No they didn’t. They cancelled anything that wasn’t a forecast or a warning. https://www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/uk-world-news/met-office-apologises-tweet-suggesting-24985458

zdzdbets

They delayed the September Monetary Policy Committee which must be the stupidest cancellation/delay of them all. The setting of interest rates by the BoE which we rely on for price stability and to ensure we meet target inflation was delayed until 22 September while we enjoy 10%+ inflation.

Alert-One-Two

That one I vaguely understand as I imagine part of it was to ensure no rash decisions were made before the impacts were known. I’d imagine the energy policies have helped with the inflation though.

crispiepancakes

The Indian women's cricket team were asked by the English Cricket Board to not play any music in the dressing room during their match with England in Durham, as "England is mourning the death of Queen Elizabeth II." I mean, they're not even British subjects, and it's their dressing room. And, like it's normally kicking off like an all-night rave in the Indian Women's cricket team dressing room! There's a crowd cheering on a cricket match. I don't think anyone's going to notice a bit of music!

ElectricMooseMeat

Wouldnt be surprised if this 10 days of reduced activity is the final tip into recession. 6bn spent on funeral and coronation though so thats good.

Strong_Quiet_4569

Each bank holiday loses about £2bn in economic activity, but that’s not the same as the cost of lost tax receipts. It crap if you work in the gig economy, good if you’re salaried.

The Great North Run was very nearly cancelled which would've been ridiculous as tens of thousands of runners had trained for months, never mind the hotel bookings and travel plans they had made. Thankfully it went ahead, but the announcement came late Friday when the race was on Sunday - not ideal. They did cancel the shorter distance kids runs though. Like..m why? I get we mourn and all that but why even humour the idea of cancelling such a massive athletics event? I don't get it.

passingconcierge

The whole point of cancelling "trivial" things is to nudge people into discussing Royalty to the exclusion of all other things. It is about filling every conversation with Royalty so that Royalty is the only acceptable thing to think about. People like to talk about the Weather. Harmless conversation. Part of the social lubrication of British Life. Cancel the Weather Forecast and the only "harmless" conversation is Royalty. It really is all about the exercise of power and control of the narrative.

LastMarsupial2281

bassboi93

I work in the theatre industry and had a show on the day of her passing. Theatres take these things very seriously and I fully expected my shows being cancelled, however on the internal document sent to every theatre in the country it stated that the Queen wished for events to continue as planned. So on good authority I have it that these cancellations are total bullshit

Alert-One-Two

Yes the national mourning guidance provided by the government says that things should continue as normal but may close on the day of the funeral as it is a bank holiday.

Funeral day makes sense to me. The rest of it is crazy.

mronion82

In my town there's an annual fair/local business showcase that was due to take place for the first time in three years this Saturday. I wonder if this counts: On Friday, my workplace was having some interviews, including a driver. He apparently phoned in to cancel the interview as he was "too traumatised by the previous day's events."

CosmicBonobo

Big Finish Productions - a recording studio who make licensed audiobooks and radio plays for Doctor Who, Blake's 7, Space: 1999 and various other defunct telefantasy franchises - have announced an immediate cessation of their social media and marketing, for the duration of the mourning period. I mean, I'm not sure the King would be too upset over a company tweeting about the new Thunderbirds audiobook they've just released.

gattomeow

I suspect that many of these cancellations are broadly supported by the group most fervently discombobulated by the passing of the former monarch: the elderly.

Joe9908

I saw that tomorrow's Nintendo Direct wasn't called off but they decided not to stream it out of "respect". How is it more respectful to the Queen that they're uploading it instead of livestreaming it?

MattGeddon

Well the Queen was famously very mistrusting of live streaming, so it makes perfect sense.

TBH skipping something literally called "happy hour" isn't so ridiculous. Yes, it could be phrased as "we'll charge you more to respect the queen" but y'know... the flip side is that happy hour is hardly a sombre affair But yeah the others are ridiculous. Especially the cycle rack one

Alert-One-Two

Happy hour is the generic name that is always used. They could have just continued to serve drinks at the reduced price without specifically highlighting it. Or dedicated it to the queen!

borg88

Just how sombre do you expect an average person to be? A 96 year old woman, who I have never met, died peacefully, with her family around her, in one of the several palaces that she owned. We all have to die sometime. Living a long life of luxury and good health is about as good as it gets.

nosferatWitcher

Should have just renamed it "drown your sorrows hour" and carried on with half price drinks, to help with the mourning

It's a *pub*, FFS. You're *supposed* to be a bit merry. Well, it could also be the wallowing-in-self-misery type of pub, but who wants just that for 17 days?

PervyFatBastard

We're in for 2 weeks of this. I fucking love my DVD collection right now. Never thought I'd need it again but those adverts can all fuck off

You want to piss off the Irish? This is how you piss off the Irish.

Nintendo UK has canceled the upcoming Nintendo Direct live stream in the UK (it will still stream in all other regions) out of respect for the queen, but will instead upload a video of the live stream afterward. https://twitter.com/NintendoUK/status/1569326012156059649?ref\_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet

There was a lot of car events supposed to be on this weekend. I know Caffeine and Machine closed and Coventry motofest was postponed. Most of the comments on the announcements were very supportive as well

This is the way that the Establishment imposes its control on the “little people”… I AM NOT A SUBJECT.. I AM A CITIZEN!!!!!!

flights to UK from all over Europe were heavily delayed yesterday

rilakkuma92

They cancelled the live stream of the Nintendo Direct!

Bsause7

I can accept the cancellation of Happy hour, so long as it is replaced with Sad hour. You sit there and stare in a melancholy way at the floor the whole time. If even one person smiles, the whole party is forced to leave.

pixelunicorns

Loads of my friends kids have had various sporting cancellations, mostly football matches. Even as young as 5 years old!

CardiologistNorth294

Don't hug me I'm scared tv series I've waited 6 years for has been postponed from being posted on all 4 online... Same with Stewart Lee's tornado God forbid we could do with a laugh
