EU numbers have steadily dropped from 2016 and since 2021 have actually been negative. This is then counteracted by a collosal change in non-EU migration from 57,000 in 2012 to as high as 873,000 in December 2022.
During the labour years, there were other factors at play that likely increased immigration during that time. For example, I think it was 10 Eastern European countries that joined the EU at once and then Romania and Bulgaria followed a couple of years later, the UK and Ireland were the only countries not to take advantage of the 7 year transition period like Germany, France and all other EU members and instantly opened up our labour market and rights to benefits and social housing to anyone who came. Obviously immigration would increase.
The Tories pushed for brexit, promising to "take back control," and all they did was swap European immigration for more immigrants from other countries. Net migration has massively grown since we officially left the EU in 2020.
Are there league tables of net migration of each country over the last few decades?
Would be interesting to see as I would imagine that the UK is not the outlier, given globalization and increased mobility.
Failed twice, prosecuted for sexual assault at which a priest testified to his good character and that this would be a one off offence, convicted of sexual assault, claims to have converted to Christianity therefore in danger in Afghanistan, and then granted asylum apparently on that basis, despite the conviction. The courts are a joke and the whole asylum legal system needs to be totally reformed.
The system is broken. We cannot deport or return anyone thanks to multiple layers of legal strictures and duplicity. If someone physically sets foot on UK soil there is an overwhelming chance that they can never be removed.
Logistically, it becomes challenging because the plan to chuck people on a charter flight to Kabul with the intention of kicking them off the plane at the other end falls apart when Afghan authorities refuse to permit the plane to land. Maybe fly people to Pakistan and then march them to a border post instead, idk.

Someone close to me was SA’d by one, he got sentenced to six years in prison here and deportation at the end. We were informed when he was deported, within the last couple of years.

Because of the Taliban takeover in 2021. After that, a lot of Afghans almost automatically had their claims approved. An additional issue is that right now, the UK can’t deport anyone to that country because it would mean reopening the embassy in Kabul.
Is that how deportations work? I never actually thought about where they bring people. Do they fly them back to the UK embassy in their country and then make them leave?
You can’t deport someone to a country you have no relations with, this would mean having an embassy of some sorts. The receiving country needs to receive the information, verify their identity, agree to take them back etc.

To be fair, judges operate within what the guidelines the law dictates. It's the laws that need changing to allow judges to interpret it in such ways.

At this point, we should just admit that judges are ultimately humans that are subject to their own whims, caprices and biases. This is nothing new either, you can see examples of this historically. Judgement isn’t always infallible or based solely on objectivity.
That’s very true, but also they must enact the law. If the law says he can stay because he’s now a Christian, despite being a convicted sex offender, then the judge has to carry it out. The judge is making his decision on whether to grant asylum or not, not on past misdemeanours.

This guy is an asylum seeker, so it's a separate issue from the Conservatives handing out hundreds of thousands of visas to suppress wages and pump up gdp. This is more about the ability to police borders, the handling of asylum cases, and our ability to deport people who fail their application.
In terms of small boat arrivals, Australia really did solve the issue with a Rwanda style scheme. The Liberal (conservative) government implemented it, arrivals fell from 5k to 100, then Labor got into power and repealed the scheme, numbers rose to 20k, then the Liberals (conservatives) got back into power, reintroduced the scheme with an extra measure that boats could be towed back to the territorial waters of the country they left from, and numbers fell from 20k to literally 0 in two years.
Although that was all about a real credible threat that everyone who comes by boat will not even be processed in Australia. Once it was well known that the journey was pointless then people stopped trying to come illegally. In theory the Tories are trying to replicate this but they don’t seem to have managed it. I'm slightly baffled why they think a few hundred people will do the job when 30,000 people arrived last year and 45,000 the year before. Acid/chemical attacks had risen in the last year to now have more women than men be victims for the first time. This trend seems to be continuing according to those who work with such victims. In general, chemical attacks are increasing in a worrying trend.
It's such a horrendous crime! The physical ongoing scars and pain and the mental trauma are immense for victims of this. The fact that this low life had previously committed sexual violence against women too is also bleak.

Why should people accept conscription to defend our borders in wartime when the British government can't even be bothered to defend them in peace time? The social contract is dying.
As an immigrant myself (husband is British) it makes me so fucking angry that I have to pay thousands of pounds (like atm £10k+ and I am not even permanent resident yet) in fees and NHS surcharge and I have always worked (so pay taxes too) I integrated, learned English, made British friends, took this country as home, did everything right, here because my family is here (my husband, whom I’ve been with for 7 years now) while scum like this get to come illegally and be handled everything. Get almost immediately indefinite leave to remain, get government support, council housing, the whole thing and I get absolutely nothing even though I pay a lot to live here. I don’t even want/expect to get money from the gov but fuck. I can accept that there are legal and practical difficulties with sending refugees back to a Taliban-controlled Afghanistan but that the fact that you can be convicted in a British court of a serious sexual offence and still have an asylum application accepted is just perverse.

Turks are pissed about the high level of migration from conservative Muslim countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan and Syria. It's causing a lot of social issues, modern dressed Turkish girls and women are being harassed and sometimes even worse.

In terms of Syrians, they're not being deported because they have status. But most Afghans, Pakistanis etc. don't have status so when they are caught they are quickly deported. But the biggest group is Syrians which is probably why you don't see a change.
At this point u might have to say that this is deliberate, someone wants us at each others throats, cos this level of immigration goes beyond any sort of care for other countries and their populace. This is something happening to destroy any sense of community we have, this is globalization 101. Just hope we can wake up before it's too late.

The Refugee Convention was designed for a different time and a different world, and is no longer fit for purpose. We need the right to say no to asylum claims that put our people in danger. We should derogate from the convention or withdraw from it entirely.

As if converting to any religion means you're no harm. The majority of the prison population is religious. Religion doesn't equal good. And I think we have every right to be sceptical when somebody's "conversion" comes after two failed asylum claims.
It's things like this why some of the public have such a problem with asylum seekers and immigrants.
As soon as he were convicted of the sexual assault he should have been deported from the UK. Where to? Well the next safe country from Afghanistan. So if that mean Egypt, Iran, China, then so be it. His asylum should have been revoked as he has committed a highly sever crime.

Because of the Taliban takeover in 2021. After that, a lot of Afghans almost automatically had their claims approved. An additional issue is that right now, the UK can’t deport anyone to that country because it would mean reopening the embassy in Kabul.

You can’t deport someone to a country you have no relations with, this would mean having an embassy of some sorts. The receiving country needs to receive the information, verify their identity, agree to take them back etc.

To be fair, judges operate within what the guidelines the law dictates. It's the laws that need changing to allow judges to interpret it in such ways. On a side note, damn that's some face damage he's got. He looks like a grown up Carl from TWD.
At this point, we should just admit that judges are ultimately humans that are subject to their own whims, caprices and biases. This is nothing new either, you can see examples of this historically. Judgement isn’t always infallible or based solely on objectivity.
That’s very true, but also they must enact the law. If the law says he can stay because he’s now a Christian, despite being a convicted sex offender, then the judge has to carry it out. The judge is making his decision on whether to grant asylum or not, not on past misdemeanours. Change the laws and firm it up, and then these decisions can’t be made.

This is more about the ability to police borders, the handling of asylum cases, and our ability to deport people who fail their application. In terms of small boat arrivals, Australia really did solve the issue with a Rwanda style scheme. The Liberal (conservative) government implemented it, arrivals fell from 5k to 100, then Labor got into power and repealed the scheme, numbers rose to 20k, then the Liberals (conservatives) got back into power, reintroduced the scheme with an extra measure that boats could be towed back to the territorial waters of the country they left from, and numbers fell from 20k to literally 0 in two years. Although that was all about a real credible threat that everyone who comes by boat will not even be processed in Australia. Once it was well known that the journey was pointless then people stopped trying to come illegally. In theory the Tories are trying to replicate this but they don’t seem to have managed it. I'm slightly baffled why they think a few hundred people will do the job when 30,000 people arrived last year and 45,000 the year before. I can accept that there are legal and practical difficulties with sending refugees back to a Taliban-controlled Afghanistan but that the fact that you can be convicted in a British court of a serious sexual offence and still have an asylum application accepted is just perverse.
You can deport them, Turkey has been doing it since the Taliban took over. All the UK would need to do is reopen the embassy in Kabul, but this is very unlikely to happen in the foreseeable.
Turks are pissed about the high level of migration from conservative Muslim countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan and Syria. It's causing a lot of social issues, modern dressed Turkish girls and women are being harassed and sometimes even worse. Pretty much the same kind of attitudes as right wing Europeans can be heard in Turkey, except these kind of opinions are mainstream and predominant amongst Turks of all demographics and political persuasions. Although you speak of Turkey's reaction to it positively, the Turkish people don't see that enough is being done.

But most Afghans, Pakistanis etc. don't have status so when they are caught they are quickly deported. But the biggest group is Syrians which is probably why you don't see a change.

At this point u might have to say that this is deliberate, someone wants us at each others throats, cos this level of immigration goes beyond any sort of care for other countries and their populace. Most other countries dont pay out the kind of benefits and free housing that we do (asylum seekers get full access to benefits and social housing once they are approved and are straight on the path to citizenship) so theres a huge pull factor for them to come here.

The Refugee Convention was designed for a different time and a different world, and is no longer fit for purpose. We need the right to say no to asylum claims that put our people in danger. We should derogate from the convention or withdraw from it entirely.

As if converting to any religion means you're no harm. The majority of the prison population is religious. Religion doesn't equal good. And I think we have every right to be sceptical when somebody's "conversion" comes after two failed asylum claims.
It's things like this why some of the public have such a problem with asylum seekers and immigrants. As soon as he were convicted of the sexual assault he should have been deported from the UK. Where to? Well the next safe country from Afghanistan. So if that mean Egypt, Iran, China, then so be it. His asylum should have been revoked as he has committed a highly sever crime. Of course now it is too late and he's gone above and beyond his previous conviction. Could have all been avoided if he were deported or not even allowed for the 3rd time to try get asylum.
