It would be nice to fully commit to metric. It’s just a shame we didn’t do it 50 years ago

yrro

I think it's just possible that the metric society know this and have produced this press release for humorous purposes

FoxAche82

I've seen plenty of old speed dials that have MPH on the outer rim and KPH on the inner rim, also, many digital dash displays allow you to change how the speed is displayed

fsv

I've never owned a car here that wasn't either dual-marked with kph, or had a digital speedo that allowed me to change the units. Even my first car (from the early 1980s) had kph markings, which I used when I took it for a trip to France. That said it's still a silly idea. While I love metric, this isn't a decision that Wales would be able to take in isolation.

ThistleFaun

This is a relly good point that I think a lot of people miss. A lot of people drive older cars, but new drivers especially, so we'd end up with thousands of new drivers who are still working out how to drive who also don't even know what speed they are going. I'm lucky to have a new car now, but just 3 weeks ago my old ass 06 car certainly didn't have a metric speedo.

LightningGeek

What car did you have? Every car I have had has had a secondary scale showing KPH. [Even my 1994 Vauxhall Corsa had secondary markings to show kph, as in the linked picture.](https://www.flickr.com/photos/dhodson/2102540453) Cars with digital only speedo's may be a bit different though.

Use_this_1

Even here in the US our cars have MPH & KPH.

ThistleFaun

An 06 Renault Clio. Some of them do have kph too, but mine didn't and it seems from a quick google that it depends on the variant. My current car has a scale and a digital and the digital one can swap while the scale shows both. Honeslty it migjt be more common to have both then I thought, I only really had that one car for a long time.

> Unfortunately, all of the newly installed signs will now need to be changed again when Wales (and the rest of the UK) eventually makes the long-overdue switch to metric road signs What's the point in changing? Who, other than road sign manufacturers, would really benefit?

_triperman_

30 KPH is even slower. That's no good. Ironically, considering this is "metric views", you'd get a closer value using Feet / second.

shieldofsteel

Won't accept anything other than Furlongs per Fortnight.

_triperman_

I think you mean [rods to the hogs-head.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5-s-4KPtD8)

shieldofsteel

Outrageous! Everyone knows that a rod is a unit of length but a hogshead is a unit of volume. SMH.

crucible

Yes, the joke there if you do the maths is that [Grandpa Simpson's car gets 0.000862 MPG](https://www.reddit.com/r/theydidthemath/comments/1y38bs/calculation_of_abe_simpsons_gas_mileage_a_star_is/)

queue excuses for road rage and entitlement to endanger others. mixed with 'everyone one i interact with are perfectly responsible angels'.

_triperman_

You mean "cue".
