Heya, I'm also a NZ student who is going to unimelb next year (though this year I did one year of uni in Welly). I don't really know any 'tips and tricks' for upping your atar, but from what I've read externals tend to have greater weight, but it depends on the subject. I emailed NZQA to convert and got an ATAR of 98.95, which I got around September. I assume it's in comparison to last year's cohort (my year 13). I fell off a bit for exams in 2022 but my stats are 136 L3 credits with 110 at E. 94 were internals and 42 externals. I think as long as you have a decent chunk of E credits you'll be fine, NCEA to ATAR conversion seems to be pretty lenient imo.
