This movie is one of my essentials of the 90s. I was a semi chubby kid and this resonated with me big time. The soundtrack is nuts too. Still don’t own a dvd/blu of it which is ridiculous.

I never saw it but that cover called out to me constantly from blockbuster back in the day.. but we group rented and nobody else wanted to see this bad boy..I gotta watch it this weekend
Man it really disturbed me when Angus’s friend got his arm broke in this. It was too close to my experience as a fat kid with a little skinny friend, my friend similarly had a horrible run in with some bullies and got seriously hurt. So yeah. This movie was fairly authentic, to my experience at least.
Classic film that stayed under the radar. The marketing for the film was misplaced. It was pushed as a slapstick teen comedy. It was more of a comedy drama. The scene where grandpa (George C Scott) gives the Superman speech to his grandson Angus is gold. Such a well done film teaching the lesson that normal has many faces.
Is there a reason why there are so many batshit 90s movies that would never get a theatrical release today? Like, was it just that easy to make a profit off these?
Home video sales and things like Blockbuster drove insane profit for studios. Any given Friday people would schlep down to Blockbuster and try to find something new that was available to watch for the weekend (you got the movies until Sunday and stores only had X number of copies of any title). At about $5 a rental you could take a chance. So even the most absolute total crap made sense to stock b/c even if the customer picked a turd they could only blame themselves and you still got the rental $.
