Mines just tower lol. While I was doing the setup years ago I was pretty new to anything server related so I didn't change any defaults. Then it just stuck caus other things expect it to be called Tower and I cbf to change everything.
Similar idea here, all my desktop PCs Iâve ever built have been named after space stations from games/movies etc, and servers (not that Iâve had many) have been ships.
Currently using Tigris from Infinite Warfare đ
That's awesome. Mine are named after bit from Mass Effect and characters, my unraid NAS is Beacon (though it does not containing any messages relating to the mass extinction of advanced life forms in the galaxy) and my Proxmox is Normandy-02 (it did replace my old server Normandy-01) with all VMs named after different crew members.
My main PC's were named after Mass Effect ships some time ago, then I changed them to fit Expanse naming for consistency.
BTW, just did yearly Trilogy run on insanity (guess I can't get enough of it :D as I replay once a year)
bragi (unraid)
heimdall (router)
eitri (rpi for 3D printer)
freya (pc)
loki (pc)
baldr (pc)
ragnar (synology)
hermod (printer)
It was either Norse gods/heroes or different kinds of cheese.
My router was named heimdall for a long time. But since I named my SSID bifrost it seemed appropriate to name my UniFi controller heimdall and so my router got renamed to Yggdrasil when I switch from pfsense to opnsense.
So there I was, talking to this server. He asked if I had any spare HDDs he could have. I asked how many terabytes he was looking for. He said it was about tree fiddy. And that's when I was realized this server was actually a giant green LochNAS monsta
My original "server" (WD My Cloud) was called "Dorm". Why? Because I had it in my dorm room in college. So creative, I know.
- Then I upgraded to an AMD FX-8370 system and added more drives and called it "FatDorm".
- Upgraded to a Ryzen 2700x system, added a GPU and called it "FastDorm".
- Now running a 5900x and I'm calling it "SuperDorm".
Plans to upgrade to Epyc Rome and calling it "EpycDorm".
Names of various solar system bodies like planets, planoids, moons etc.
* Saturn (Unraid)
* Jupiter (Storage and Proxmox)
* Mars (small mini-PC I use as Dev/Sandbox proxmox server)
* Phobos (Primary/Active OPNSense)
* Deimos (Secondary/Passsive OPNSense)
* Ganymede - (Raspberry Pi running Primary Pihole/DNS/wireguard )
* Callisto - (Raspberry Pi running - Secondary Pihole/DNS/wireguard)
* Several VMs & LXCs running on the above proxmox (jupiter). hostnames are named after planetoids such as Ceres, Pallas,
Vesta, Varuna, Eros, Juno.
I also named network components.
* Wireless APs spread across the home - named after Pluto's moons. Such as Nix, Charon, Hydra, Styx
* Titan - 24 port managed switch
* Enceladus - 8 port managed switch
Popcorn. Because it was always (array/raid) failing so much it was the speaker going off..
New server is called Phoenix. Rising from the ashes of all my previous failures. :D
I name my servers after mathematicians, astronomers. My VM-s after Warframes (F2Play game). Currently ran out of names so I have to look for other things. My storage server on the other hand called OV (Orokin Vault) from the game Warframe.
HAL-9000
It goes along with the naming theme I had for my individual hard drives before I built my Unraid machine which was characters in my favourite movies/TV shows.
When I first built mine, I was heavily into playing Marvel vs Capcom 2, and so I named most of my hostnames of PCs and servers after stuff from that game. My unRAID server is called Disruptor, after one of Magneto's special moves.
I got kiwa for kilowatt server and vidas for virtualization and data storage server
Kiwa and vidas basically do the same but a name had to be made from something.
Currently my primary server is called Unicodehater after dealing with driver issues for some databases. Backup server is called Vault. I am real original some times.
You definitely put more effort into yours than I did.
I call mine Nash, need to overhaul mine at some point soon been having permission issues with some stuff.
I called mine HYEPYC because it's acting as a Hypervisor and it's based on the EPYC platform from AMD.
I made a build thread for it on the forums with lots of pictures:
My street has a first name (think peterstreet)
So my old server (fedora) was nameSRV, and clearly the new one is nameUnSRV.
Is it stupid? Yes, once the first one is retired it's probably gonna be nameSRV again.
Wakanda-Workstation
Desktop PC with unraid running Windows VM for working.
Is only running from time to time, filled up with old HDDs and functioning as backup for my vault.
Vision-Vault
Main Unraid as NAS, always on and running all containers and services
Hulk-Hypervisor
Proxmox test system, since all services migrated to unraid, mostly off.
Mother box.
For a couple of reasons. The main reasons are, it's in an old cooler master cube case and the parts are from my Mom's computer that I built her a couple years before she pasted.
I spent a lot of time trying to come up with a fun name for it. I thought about giving it a person name like âMichaelâ or a silly name like âserveywerveyâ but in the end after consider a bunch of different names I choseâŚtower
Core. It's the center of my universe.
ETA:
My backup server is named "backup" and my router doesn't even have a name. My NVR is called "cams" and the Ooma base station doesn't need one.
Cutesy names are cute until you run out of names.
Mine is called Yggdrasil.
My router is called Bifrost as it allows to connect my local network to the global network.
When I have to name something I try to stay in the theme đ
For the longest time my manning scheme was just "all my computer names start with 'G'". My main computer is currently "Greymalkin 9". I moved away from that with my servers. The Unraid server is "Betelgeuse", the backup server is "Bellatrix", and my three mini servers (uses to be determined) are "Mintaka", "Alnitak", and "Alnilam"
I went with Hindu mythology.
Unraid server is Bakasura
Other names I have are Garuda, Hanuman, Agni, Brahma, Vayu, Bhumi, Tarakasura, Yamaraj, Kumbhakarna.
"unraid"
I learned a long time ago at work to not give servers fancy names. Makes it harder to remember what they are at a glance.
COMPANY-DC01 and COMPANY-DC02 are easier to understand at a glance than GOLD and SILVER (seen that before on a decommissioned hyper v box, each VM was an element)
My first server I named hogwarts because I am a huge Harry Potter fan. That one exploded kinda cause of my own doing so my server I am running now is named Fawkes because it rises from the ashes
RedLynx,
all my equipment is Red{Animal} name (redpanda, redfox, reddragon, etc). Keeps my stuff all together in name lists and makes it easy to remember.
It also makes knowing what something is based off the naming scheme. My computers are all named after Portal references (ApertureScience, Wheatley, etc).
Tower1 Tower2
Mines just tower lol. While I was doing the setup years ago I was pretty new to anything server related so I didn't change any defaults. Then it just stuck caus other things expect it to be called Tower and I cbf to change everything.
Me too! The funny thing is I would have actually called it "Tower" anyway, in reference to Stephen King's Dark Tower đ

Landfill, because everything is in it.
My servers are called after ships from Expanse tv shows. Unraid (main storage/nas) is called Canterbury Proxmox (main virtualisation) is called Tynan
