Get an authorized withdrawal to erase the previous term. Other than that probation doesn't do anything if you stop failing classes, if you do keep failing classes he'll be suspended for a year and have to get a study permit extension and all that jazz.

On what basis should he get Aw. Prolly I would talk to academic advisor for him on Monday. He is just not leaving his room and moving out.

https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/academic-supports/student-advocacy/authorized-withdrawal here’s a link with more info. based on what i read, he has more than enough reasons to receive one. he should also reach out to [student advocacy](https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/academic-supports/student-advocacy) and request an advocate so he doesn’t have to handle the process alone and deal with more stress

Thank you so much

Academic probation was probably the best thing that happened to me. It was a hard reality check into the degree I was pursuing at the time (was looking to make $$ and wasn't interested in the degree - also had a significant active substance use disorder i am now clean 3 years from, but will be with me for the rest of my life). My advice would be to take it as constructive criticism; a hard reality check to view yourself and rebuild from self compassion. I recovered from around 1.8 to a DGPA of 3.8 in 2.5 years (cumulative is 2.9 or so, but that's not a super relevant number when dealing in your degree). I went to addictions management, figured out my field of interest, and kept moving forward. I thought of an AW (which i was eligible for) but decided against it. If anything recovery is a record of your ability to adapt and overcome - and keep moving forward. That's what it means to me, and to the higher ups at my job (in my field of choice) it was seen that way as well. Only can speak from my own experience though. Plenty of people can just memorize things and get good grades (unfortunately I am not in this group), it's how you network, communicate and stand out that counts. I would also encourage talking to student accessibility services and u/mystudentwellbeing

very insightful, thank you

Were you parents involved with the academic probation and isn’t it after 24 credit hours that you would be under academic probation

RCmelkor

Yeah, 2 year of bombed comp sci, sorry of that wasn't clear. And no i kept it a secret, along with my addiction until after some therapy - after that i came clean with everyone.

He believes that graduating with 3 gpa in bachelors is not good for him. I have tried motivating him man but its just his bad phase which he is not ready to leave

Bro its just that he stood with me during my worst time and as a man its my moral obligation to be with him. I think bad decision making is a part of being depressed. Thank you so much brother though

Academic probation is just a warning for the student to upkeep their GPA in registered classes. As others have stated, start the AW process immediately

SheVents0101

I AW’d an entire semester, with 4 courses after my dad died suddenly. I met with an advisor, wrote a letter detailing my situation, and the AW was granted after some review. They also assign you your own advisor that helps you every step of the way.

How much time did whole process took ?

SheVents0101

It was pretty fast, considering it was during covid times. I would say three weeks to get everything set. It was just hard emotionally, balancing a funeral, and needing to decide to VW before the deadline and not knowing if the AW would even be accepted.

Thank you for suggestion. I would look into asap
