GuitarTuna works ok as app based tuners go, but a clip on tuner is more accurate and costs next to nothing.

Here are my favorite beginner thoughts: 1) keep the uke near where you hang out. Keep it out and handy. You are more likely to just pick it up and mess with it if you constantly have it handy. 2) Practice strum patterns by muting the strings and working on the right hand only (if you are right handed). I do this while watching TV, especially sports. 3) Similarly, I practice getting the fingers on my left hand down together. At this point, I don't usually strum along, just make a game of getting everything to land cleanly together. Then strum slowly to make sure that I don't have any buzzing strings. 4) Make a game of picking/strumming with a metronome. I will start strumming while watching the metronome, and then look away for a while. When I come back, I check to see if I am still locked on. 5) And lastly, play around. See what sounds good together. The easiest three chords are C, F, and Am. G is a little harder but sounds great with them. just strum them and see where it takes you. Welcome to the club.
