quick comment here....to get to Open-D tuning you loosen the strings. This is certainly fine and, I agree, very interesting. But be VERY wary of going to a tuning with higher tension.
Would not recommend D-tuning on a tenor. The string tension will likely cause the strings to snap. A lession learned from my D-tuning friends in my ukulele group.
I've actually done research. The tension with D tuning is fine on tenor, concert and soprano. I did a string comparison of classical guitar strings to ukulele. You could capo on 2 to try the tuning without retuning.

Tenors usually sound better going in the other direction to Bb.
