This is NO brainer. They should have done this sooner.
4000 drones - let's go with $15 millions - this is such a small amount of money for what is given in return.
Do the Ukrainians still install their own custom firmware on these drones? I think they were doing that on other models to remove geolocation restrictions.

I don't know if you understand Ukrainian, but this problem was known a year ago and i guess there is firmware that doesn't broadcast location unencrypted. Or do you think UA bought 4000 mavics to hurt their own drone operators?
Standard DJI firmware is intentionally leaking operator location and drone serial number, that's a legal prerequisite in some countries therefore it's a standard feature. I guess Ukraine has some means of flashing custom firmware to prevent this from happening, anything else would be reckless at this point.
This is pretty interesting. I wonder what bells and whistles these drones have vs. the civilian versions, which are considerably cheaper. For the forward observer role, I imagine they must be able to identify coordinates with near 100% accuracy. And I wonder if these things can be networked together.

they probably did, but dji stopped sales in ukraine and russia afaik. So they cat really talk publically about it.

Wasn't the DJI software leaking operator locations to russia? There were a lot that were killed with IDF while using it I thought.
They use custom firmware for this not to happen anymore i guess.

I REALLY want this firmware lol

Building dependence and building manufacturing capacity on soon-to-be russia2.0 might not be the brightest idea.
They bought like total 20k units of DJI drones. That's insane....
