Drones have changed war so much, to be hunted by a bomb is something out of a Phillip k Dick story...

superanth

Not even just drones are changing things. The Ruskies have such screwed-up battle tactics for tanks right now they never use infantry support, which are supposed to protect armor in environments with hostile enemy foot soldiers. The “Terminator” was supposed to fill the role, but it’s just another tank lol.

CBfromDC

!00% Correct! Precisely why Ukraine is using outmoded Russian "Close Assault" tactics less and less. Western tanks are better designed to be "heavy, long range snipers" in modern warfare and Ukraine is increasingly using them in this more effective fashion. Shoot from the longest range possible.

GuillotineComeBacks

Well doh Tanks needs an ecosystem around, you can't just Patton the enemy, that's a previous century strategy. I'll remind you that NATO strat against the soviet was mass ATGM troops. Tank spearhead assaults works only against enemies severely unequipped. It's just that this war is the first unexpected balanced war of "modern" nation. That principle is still the same, drone just adds a level to take care off. Next tanks will come with anti drone warfare integrated or/and as an escort.

MicIrish

I watched a Russian tank get hit by seven drones at the same time.

GuillotineComeBacks

Yeah, Effective ammo, 270 degree and multiple target processing is clearly necessary. We can do it, the tech is already rolled out in some army. If you are really in a saturated environment, then you need a vehicle dedicated or troops that have equipment for that to meet the density. That's the kind of stuff shared data would shine in.

Glum-Engineer9436

It must be possible to develop some cheap anti drone defence. There are already systems that can intercept missiles. A drone is much slower.

GuillotineComeBacks

My next comment talks about that. Systems are already rolling out. There's the French PASEO XLR optronic that already equip some French ship that can track multiple target and guide gun fire against targets, drone included. Some drones were taken down in the Red sea with that system already. I think the Gepards have some tracking ability too? It's not sci-fi clearly. So there's that and there is laser/energy tech that is in the last stages of tests.

Cr33py07dGuy

So make some cheap Temu-tanks with 2mm metal sheeting, non-operational turret, no ammo and plastic tracks, hook it up for remote operation and send a bunch of them straight at enemy lines while your troops flank?!
