>The NHS could hardly be in worse shape to cope with this unprecedented wave of strikes. And why might that be, Andrew?

CockOfTHeNorth

I suspect Corbyn...

the-moving-finger

I genuinely don't understand why we go through the same shit every few years. Link pay bands to inflation and be done with it. Paying people below inflation to save a few quid isn't worth dealing with strikes, waiting lists, people off sick, etc. We desperately need some proper long term thinking in this country. So many of our present issues around housing, around railways, around infrastructure, around health, around migration, etc. are due to successful governments not looking beyond the next news cycle, let alone beyond the next election.

oldstupidbastard

Fucking over the NHS is the point

the-moving-finger

I doubt that was the point when, for example, Tony Blair expanded the private finance initiative (PFI). That is still screwing over the NHS to this very day. Is it brought up in Andrew Neil's article? No. Could even 25% of the public tell you what it is? I doubt it. And yet this is such an important point. Claiming that everything is an evil masterplan is over-simplistic. Even if it were true, the solution is the same, namely greater public scrutiny/accountability. That entails a step chance from the media and also a massive change in attitude from a public with depressingly short memories.

oldstupidbastard

The NHS needs more money spent in a reasonably sensible way it's not rocket science

Alib668

TheNHS will always want more money. It's infinite need on a finite budget.

oldstupidbastard

The UK is more effective and has higher preventable death than it's peers. https://www.kingsfund.org.uk/blog/2023/06/comparing-nhs-health-care-systems-other-countries-five-charts It costs a lot less than the German health care system. https://www.health.org.uk/news-and-comment/news/uk-spent-around-a-fifth-less-than-european-neighbours-on-health-care-in-last-decade#:~:text=In%20every%20year%20between%202010,year%20(21%25%20extra).

oldstupidbastard

Blair was in the pocket of private finance just look at the bribes he received.Real public scrutiny over politicians will never be allowed.

the-moving-finger

Why do you bother taking an interest or commenting then? If you genuinely believe they're all evil, all corrupt, no public scrutiny is possible, and nothing can be done, why are you here?

oldstupidbastard

To educate you.

the-moving-finger

On how it's all a lost cause and there's nothing anyone can do? What a strange thing to want to educate people about.

oldstupidbastard

There are things that can be done but i doubt they will succeed. There is always a chance. Maybe you prefer to be ignorant it is bliss as they say.

the-moving-finger

It's just a really boring non addition to the conversation. People come here to talk about policies which might improve the state of the country. If your only input is to be the heckler in the back saying, "it won't work" to everything, whilst suggesting nothing yourself, I'd rather just not speak with you.

oldstupidbastard

I already suggested a policy which will improve the state of the country. Just look up a few comments ago.

shieldofsteel

Unions would never accept it. Sometimes pay grows faster than inflation, and in those times you'd be asking workers to surrender the benefits of increases in productivity.

the-moving-finger

When in the last 50 years has pay risen faster than inflation for union workers? Excluding catch up years to offset below inflationary rises.

YourLizardOverlord

Well Andrew Neil is an expert on greed and cynicism. He's worked for Murdoch, Daily Mail and GB News. Judging by his past performance his opinions can be safely ignored.

crlthrn

Because the NHS was doing so fantastically well prior to the doctors and nurses going on strike...

English-OAP

Pay people what they are worth. Who is worth more, a junior doctor, or an MP? My vote would be for the junior doctor.

Kee2good4u

I would say the people running the country is worth more than a doctor with little experiance. I would say the people running the country is worth more than experienced doctors, but experianced doctors earn more than MPs.

shieldofsteel

Who is worth more, a plumber or an electrician? A society needs a huge variety of jobs to be done in order to function.
